Abstract

ABSTRACT In this work, CFD simulations have been conducted to investigate flow behaviour of water in fully baffled stirred tank with Rushton turbine as impeller. The aim of the paper is to develop CFD model of such tank and optimize the dimensions of inner rotating fluid zone for MRF model. The best inner rotating fluid zone is found when the simulation results for mean radial velocity, mean tangential velocity and mean axial velocity are reasonably matched with literature data of Wu and Patterson (1989). The global flow parameters such as flow number and power number predicted by CFD matched quite well with the data of Wu and Patterson (1989) and Rushton et al. (1950). The developed CFD model is able to predict key phenomenon of circulating loops inside the stirred tank. The trend of turbulence energy dissipation rate obtained from CFD simulations is in good agreement with the literature data of Wu and Patterson (1989).
