Classification Model of Prediction for Placement of Students

In recent years, research on Educational Data Mining (EDM) has developed rapidly. However, most researches focus on data source issues, and ignore the importance of data preprocessing and data mining algorithms. This paper has studied EDM, with a special focus on educational big data mining algorithms. Firstly, it analyzed the relevant elements of EDM and introduces big data technology based on the requirements of educational data application. Then it introduced the common educational big data mining algorithms and their applications, and finally discussed the development trend of educational big data mining algorithms.

Data mining is a technique for extraction of valuable patterns from multiple sources. Data mining plays an important role in marketing, electronic-commerce, business intelligent, healthcare and social network analysis. Advancement in these applications, many researchers show their interest in development of data mining applications in educational context. Educational data mining is a technique defined as a scientific area making inventions within rear types of data that derived from educational surroundings. This Paper reviews different case studies based on data mining educational systems. These systems and mining methods are considered for gathering and analysis of information. Due to huge amount of data in Educational databases, it becomes very challenging to evaluate student performance. Currently in Pakistan, there is dire need to monitor and examine student’s academic progress. There are two main causes of why existing systems were not able to analyze performance of students. First, the study on present evaluation methods is still not satisfactory to analyze the appropriate methods for evaluating the progress and performance of students in institutions of Pakistan. Second is because of absence of investigations on parameters; that effects student’s success in specific courses. Thus, a comprehensive review is proposed on evaluation of student’s performance by using techniques of Data Mining methods to progress student’s achievements. The aim of paper is to improve students’ academic performance by identifying most suitable attributes by using techniques of EDM.

Every year students success rate was analysed by the Educational Institutions to develop their Academic standard. To identify the success rate many kinds of techniques are used such as statistics, physical examination and currently ongoing datamining techniques. Data mining Techniques was widely used in many fields, it is also used in the Educational environment known as Educational Data Mining (EDM). Educational data mining generate prototype in solving the research problems in students data and used to locate the unseen patterns in the students detailed dateset. This paper uses the EDM to characterize the distinct factors affecting the students performance by making predictions with efficient algorithms. Educational professionals have to identify the causes for the student failure in academic performance and the students not succeed in completing their education which becomes a social problem these days. The machine learning algorithms help the researchers for evaluation of student’s learning habits, their academic performance and added enhancement if required. This paper would discuss different kinds of algorithms to analyse the economic background of the students which mainly affects the students performance. The dataset was utilized from the UCI Repository of secondary school students performance and analysed using the Weka tool for the datamining process.

This paper brings in an insight of the number of ways the students’ performance can be predicted. The performance of a student plays a vital role in any institution. It is the measure for assessing the academic excellence of any esteemed educational body. Not only the institute but the academic performance matters to the student as well. There is a tough competition in the field of academics. Students spend their sleepless nights turning up the pages of their books. Well, amidst of this, a student tussle with many hardships. At present, there are various methodologies to predict the student's performance and Data mining provides the most scientific and dependable method for predicting the same. Educational data mining is the process behind the evaluation of useful patterns out of huge education databases. These patterns help the educators in predicting the performance of the student. In a way it also helps in advancing effective teaching. Data mining techniques can be useful in culling out the data concerted to specific needs. This paper presents the study to find out the gap in the existing performance prediction methodologies.

Educational data mining (EDM) evaluates and predicts students' performance that assists to discover important factors affecting students' academic performance and also guides educational managers to make appropriate decisions accordingly. The most common technique for discovering meaningful information from the educational database is classification. The accuracy of classification algorithms on educational data can be increased by applying feature selection algorithms. Feature selection algorithms help in selecting robots and meaningful features for predicting students' performance with high accuracy. This paper presents different EDM approaches for forecasting students' performance using different data mining techniques. In addition, this paper also presents an evaluation of recent classification algorithms and feature selection algorithms used in educational data mining. Furthermore, the paper will guide the researchers on new and possible dimensions in building a prediction model in EDM.

This bibliometric study on data mining in education synonymous with big educational data utilizes VOSviewer and Harzing’s Publish and Perish to analyze the metadata of 1,439 journal articles found in Scopus from 2010 to 2022. As bibliometric analyses in this field are lacking, this study aims to provide a comprehensive outlook on the current developments and impact of research in this field. This study employs descriptive and trends analysis, co-authorship analysis, co-citation analysis, co-occurrences of keywords, terms map analysis, and analysis of the impact and performance of publications. It also partially replicates a similar study conducted by Wang et al. (2022), who used the Web of Science (WoS) database. The study is reported in an article entitled ‘Big data and data mining in education: A bibliometrics study from 2010 to 2022’. Results show that data mining in education is a growing research field. There is also a significant difference between the publications in Scopus and WoS. The study found several research areas and topics, such as student academic performance prediction, e-learning, machine learning, and innovative data mining techniques, to be the core basis for collaborating and continuing current research in this field. These results highlight the importance of continuing research on data mining in education, guiding future research in tackling educational challenges.

Educational Data Mining (EDM) is a current trending multidisciplinary research area that explores the data and develops the methods in educational environments. The challenges in the EDM includes predicting and improving the student's performance which helps both instructors and students, identifying the key factors that affect the performance of students, understanding the learning process of the students, providing the best suggestions to students for their future development. The accurate prediction of student's performance helps the instructors to take proactive measures, improve teaching methodologies and guide the students in a right way. This also helps the student's to be active and encourage them to put extra effort on their studies. In this work, to achieve the goals of EDM various statistical and data mining techniques are used. The raw datasets obtained through various resources are first explored and the goals are identified. Afterwards, the data mining techniques are used to identify the hidden relationships and extracting the knowledge from these datasets.

Data mining and advanced analytics methods and techniques usage in research and in business settings have increased exponentially over the last decade. Development and implementation of complex Big Data and advanced analytics projects requires well-defined methodology and processes. However, it remains unclear for what purposes and how data mining methodologies are used in practice and across different industry domains. This paper addresses the need and provides survey in the field of data mining and advanced data analytics methodologies, focusing on their application in the banking domain. By means of systematic literature review we have identified 102 articles and analyzed them in view of addressing three research questions: for what purposes data mining methodologies are used in the banking domain? How are they applied (“as-is” vs adapted)? And what are the goals of adaptations? We have identified that a dominant pattern in the banking industry is to use data mining methodologies “as-is” in order to tackle Customer Relationship Management and Risk Management business problems. However, we have also identified various adaptations of data mining methodologies in the banking domain, and noticed that the number of adaptations is steadily growing. The main adaptation scenarios comprise technology-centric aspects (scalability), business-centric aspects (actionability) and human-centric aspects (mitigating discriminatory effects).

Analytic tools are useful for detecting patterns in education data and providing insights about student performance and learning. This study compared six supervised learning algorithms (linear regression, ridge regression, the lasso, regression trees, random forests regression, gradient boosted regression) and identified features important for predicting student performance. The dataset consisted of N=1044 observations from two secondary schools in Portugal (UCI-MLR, Cortez & Silva, 2008). Performance was assessed by final grades (range: 0-20) in two courses, mathematics and Portugese. The models were fit to training data with 27 independent variables and evaluated on a testing subset. Overall, performance was lower for students in mathematics than Portugese. The models selected a similar set of variables as important for predicting performance: mother's education level, student plans for higher education, and weekly study time were positively related to predicted performance, whereas course subject, school educational support, and romantic relationships were associated with decreased student performance. The models differed in the number, weighting, order and importance given to predictor variables. Linear regression provided a model with 13 predictors. Ridge regression shrank the coefficient estimates toward zero; the lasso performed variables selection for a model with 20 predictors. There was a tradeoff between model complexity and interpretability. The single pruned regression tree provided a simple, interpretable non-linear model with four features. Random forests regression and gradient boosting reduced overfitting, but were more difficult to interpret. Advantages and limitations of the different models are discussed. Applications for educational data mining (EDM) and learning analytics (LA) are considered.

Objectives: Data mining techniques are implemented in many organizations as a standard procedure for analyzing the large volume of available data, extracting useful information and knowledge to support the major decision-making processes. Data mining can be applied to wide variety of applications in the educational sector for the purpose of improving the performance of students as well as the status of the educational institutions. Educational data mining is rapidly developing as a key technique in the analysis of data generated in the educational domain. Methods: The aim of this study presents an analysis of final year results of UG degree students using data mining technique, which carried out in three of the private colleges in Tamil Nadu state of India. The primary objective of this research work is to apply the classification techniques to the prediction of the performance of students in end semester university examinations. Particularly, the decision tree algorithm C4.5 (J48), Bayesian classifiers, k Nearest Neighbor algorithm and two rule learner’s algorithms namely OneR and JRip are used for classifying the performance of students as well as to develop a model of student performance predictors. Results: The result of this study reveals that overall accuracy of the tested classifiers is above 60%. In addition classification accuracy for the different classes reveals that the predictions are worst for distinction class and fairly good for the first class. The JRip produces highest classification accuracy for the Distinction. Classification of the students based on the attributes reveals that prediction rates are not uniform among the classification algorithms. Also shows that selected data attributes have found to be influenced the classification process. The results showed to be satisfactory. Improvements: The study can be extended to draw the performance of other classification techniques on an expanded data set with more distinct attributes to get more accurate results.

Educational data mining is used to convert the randomly available data in educational settings into some beneficial information. It helps in building insights for different research questions that arise in educational settings like performance prediction of students in academics, designing of new courses, instructors’ feedback, method or mode of teaching, etc. This paper aims to answer questions that has been a major challenge for researchers, i.e. the huge list of drop out rate and lower percentage of first-year students. It highlights factors that affect the performance of students. There are a lot of studies that has been conducted in the field education like psychology and statistics. This case study targeted students enrolled in Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA). The aim of our research work was to show the impact of variables on academic performance of students. The sample size of the study is 480 students of BCA. The questionnaire is based on factors categorized as Demographic, Academic, Social and Behavioural. The results of the study revealed that family income, parents qualification and interaction with teachers were among the influential factors along with previous year percentage, current year attendance and class behaviour.

In the domain of adaptable educational environments, our study is dedicated to achieving three key objectives: forecasting the adaptability of student learning, predicting and evaluating student performance, and employing aspect-based sentiment analysis for nuanced insights into student feedback. Using a systematic approach, we commence with an extensive data preparation phase to ensure data quality, followed by applying efficient data balancing techniques to mitigate biases. By emphasizing higher education or educational data mining, feature extraction methods are used to uncover significant patterns in the data. The basis of our classification method is the robust WideResNeXT architecture, which has been further improved for maximum efficiency by hyperparameter tweaking using the simple Modified Jaya Optimization Method. The recommended WResNeXt-MJ model has emerged as a formidable contender, demonstrating exceptional performance measurements. The model has an average accuracy of 98%, a low log loss of 0.05%, and an extraordinary precision score of 98.4% across all datasets, demonstrating its efficacy in enhancing predictive capacity and accuracy in flexible learning environments. This work presents a comprehensive helpful approach and a contemporary model suitable for flexible learning environments. WResNeXt-MJ’s exceptional performance values underscore its capacity to enhance pupil achievement in global higher education significantly.

The data mining technique is used to transform raw data into useful information, which is carried out by recognizing the hidden patterns in the data. It is used in various sectors and fields such as education, marketing, fraud detection, manufacturing and health care. Educational Data Mining (EDM) is the Use of these techniques of data mining for data extraction from educational environment. Data mining in educational sector has widespread applications. Educational sector produces huge amount of student data which if analysed can be used for various purposes such as predicting the needs of students and evaluating their progress, also helping the institutions. We intend to compare all the techniques and algorithms used in various applications, thus assessing their efficiency.

Currently, data mining is being needed in various fields to obtain analysis results from certain aspects that are needed. One of the fields that make use of data mining is education. The education sector uses data mining to determine the level of performance or achievement of its students. With data mining, the education sector can also evaluate student achievement and take the next step in increasing that achievement. Data mining in education is also known as Educational Data Mining (EDM). In this study, the theme discussed was the prediction of student learning habits and steps that could be taken to improve student achievement at the university. In this study, three (3) classification algorithms were used, namely Multilayer Perceptron, Random Forest, and Support Vector Machine. This is done to find the best results from each algorithm.

Due to the growing interest in data mining and the educational system, educational data mining is the emerging topic for research community. The various techniques of data mining like classification and clustering can be applied to bring out hidden knowledge from the educational data. Web video mining is retrieving the content using data mining techniques from World Wide Web. There are two approaches for web video mining using traditional image processing (signal processing) and metadata based approach. In this paper, we focus on the education data mining and precisely MOOCs which constitute a new modality of e-learning and clustering techniques. We present a methodology that can be used for mining Moocs videos using metadata as leading contribution for knowledge discovery.
