Collaborative Planning Using Universal Design for Learning

In today's classrooms, several students are confronted with situations where access and meaningful learning opportunities are a daily ordeal. While the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework can be used to proactively design and develop lessons that address the individual needs of a range of learners, more research into the mechanisms that would facilitate the implementation of the UDL principles is needed. Gamification and game-based learning have risen as a promising tool to provide accessibility to a wide range of learners through game features. Drawing on the UDL principles, this study reviews some key gamified design features that would allow full access to the general curriculum for the broad range of learners found in today's diverse classrooms. Teachers, educators, and learning material developers can take away some practical ideas that can help inclusive lesson plans involving game-based learning.

Many nursing students who speak English as an additional language unfortunately face challenges that can hinder their academic success. A literature review was carried out to investigate challenges faced by nursing students who speak English as an additional language and strategies to promote academic success. A significant challenge is an implicit bias toward students who speak accented English, resulting in stigmatization from faculty and peers. Students frequently relayed that because of their accented English, they were perceived as being less intelligent, resulting in ongoing stress and often a lack of confidence. The Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework promotes success for students who speak English as an additional language. The UDL framework is used to display strategies from nursing literature that promote success for students who speak English as an additional language. [J Nurs Educ. 2025;64(3):192-195.].

This chapter highlights strategies, content, and design methods for infusing the universal design for learning (UDL) mindset and framework into two graduate-level training and development programs. From the re-development of a program's conceptualization in design to instructional strategies to streamline UDL implementation into curricula, this chapter will spotlight how two faculty members actively engaged in curricula development to advance practice among training and development professionals enrolled in these programs.The chapter will consist of two existing graduate-level programs' curricula work to integrate the UDL framework into program objectives and outcomes. This was constructed by improving instructional strategies for mindset development as well as creating authentic tasks into module lessons.

In the context of culturally inclusive teaching, this piece brings together two educational frameworks – Universal Design for Learning and Intercultural Development – to develop a model for UDL for Culturally Inclusive Learning, which overlays the key features of each, to address: 1) engagement (why), 2) representation (how), and 3) action and expression (what). The world, and the higher education classroom, is increasingly globalised, and the combined framework presented here encourages university educators to build an understanding of the impact of cultural dimensions on the approaches and expectations of students from diverse backgrounds. Advice is provided on adapting teaching approaches to ensure teaching is culturally inclusive.

The following describes a journey of collaboration across disciplines to support Universal Design for Learning (UDL) curriculum and assessment enhancements in an Elementary Education teacher preparation program within a college of education (COE). As a collaborative partner with a public university in Florida, a public state college in Florida completed a review and enhancement of the Elementary Education teacher preparation curriculum using The Roadmap for Educator Preparation Reform to create an overt and measured use of the Universal Design for Learning framework. This project was supported through a grant from the Florida Department of Education FLDOE 171-5015A-8CC01.

The purpose of this review was to synthesize research on Universal Design for Learning(UDL) used in inclusive physical education classes. Key words searchers were used to identify articles from electronic databases over 19-year period from 2000 through 2019. Only seven articles met all inclusion criteria, so a few practical articles were also merged for this review due to the implications of UDL. Three thematic categorized emerged, which were; (a) the definition of UDL, (b) the benefits of implementing UDL, and (c) the applications of UDL in inclusive physical education classes. By using the UDL framework in inclusive physical education, physical education teachers can reform curricula in ways that will create greater and more inclusive options for all students with and without disabilities.

Universal design for learning is an academic framework based on research in the learning sciences, which include cognitive neuroscience that develops flexible learning mastery environments and learning knowledge of spaces which can accommodate persons with differences. Inclusive classroom is a general classroom in which students with and without difficulties study together. Inclusive schools welcome and meet various academic, social, emotional differences which in turn ensure equitable and quality curricular transaction of all students. The quality education is the fourth goal of the 17 Sustainable Developmental Goals. It ensures inclusive and equitable quality education and promotes lifelong learning opportunities for all. The present study helps in understanding the role of teaching and learning methods to achieve an inclusive and equitable quality educational community. In this research the preliminary data were collected through interviews and discussion on universal design for learning by teachers and learners. The main focus of the study is to find out universal design for learning in inclusive class room to ensure inclusive and equitable quality class room. This study explores the critical role of ubiquitous technology in supporting the implementation of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) in inclusive education. Ubiquitous technologies, including real-time applications, metaverse technologies, and UDL-based learning modules, offer flexible, adaptive methods for presenting information, engaging students, and evaluating learning outcomes tailored to individual needs. Within the UDL framework, these technologies contribute to creating inclusive learning environments, enhancing accessibility for students with special needs. Despite their significant potential, challenges remain in their implementation, such as infrastructure limitations, inadequate teacher training, and the digital divide. To overcome these barriers, strong policy support, collaboration among stakeholders, and investments in educational infrastructure are essential. Additionally, teacher training programs focused on the integration of technology into inclusive education are crucial for ensuring effective adoption. The findings suggest that the integration of ubiquitous technologies can make education more inclusive, providing equitable learning opportunities for all students, particularly those with special needs. Furthermore, the research emphasizes the importance of addressing challenges related to technological accessibility, infrastructure, and teacher readiness to maximize the impact of ubiquitous technologies in fostering inclusive educational practices. This study offers key recommendations, including increased collaboration between governments, educational institutions, and private sectors, as well as the need for further research on overcoming implementation challenges and evaluating the impact of ubiquitous technologies on the learning outcomes of students with special needs.

Background Educators and researchers have long emphasized the need to engage students in disciplinary thinking in order to develop rich, discipline-specific practices and habits of mind. Yet, these opportunities are often under-nurtured in today's classrooms and are especially limited for students with disabilities. Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is one promising avenue for supporting all students to engage in disciplinary thinking (ways of knowing, reasoning, and doing specific to the discipline). This framework for teaching and learning suggests embedding options into curricula in order to expand learning opportunities for students with and without disabilities. Researchers have yet to investigate how UDL and disciplinary thinking can complement one another. Research Question This study explores the following question: How, if at all, do teachers working within a school that explicitly promotes the UDL framework use UDL to prompt students’ disciplinary thinking in English Language Arts (ELA)? Setting The study was conducted in a fifth grade classroom of an inclusive elementary school in an urban district in the northeast United States. Participants Participants included two fifth grade co-teachers and their class of 21 students with and without documented disabilities. Research Design This qualitative case study spanned a 10-week ELA unit. Data were gathered via videotaped observations, collection of instructional materials, interviews with the co-teachers, and collection of student work. CAST is a nonprofit education research and development organization that works to expand learning opportunities for all individuals through UDL. The analytic framework joined CAST's UDL Guidelines and common themes distilled from the literature that characterize disciplinary thinking in ELA. This framework was used as a starting place to code the co-teachers’ practice and students’ thinking. An open coding strategy was applied to capture emergent themes. Findings Data reveal that the co-teachers used specific strategies to create opportunities for all students to engage in disciplinary thinking. First, particular UDL guidelines/checkpoints were applied. For example, to support learners in “reading like writers,” the co-teachers applied strategies consistent with Guideline 6: “Provide options for executive functions,” encouraging students to develop the planning and organizational practices of expert readers and writers. Second, particular UDL guidelines/checkpoints were used in ways that are not explicitly suggested in the UDL Guidelines. For example, to support students in “reading for meaning” and “reading like writers,” the co-teachers’ strategies were generally consistent with Guideline 3: “Provide options for comprehension.” Yet, the co-teachers moved beyond “comprehension” by empowering students to construct their own sophisticated, disciplinary analyses. Conclusions The co-teachers’ instructional moves and the richness of students’ thinking offer important implications for future iterations of the UDL Guidelines and suggest that all learners can and should be challenged to engage in discipline-specific practices and habits of mind.

This literature review explores the role of speech pathology in education, focusing on how communication challenges influence academic and social outcomes. It highlights the historical integration of speech-language pathology (SLP) into educational settings, emphasizing its major impact on students’ success. The review also examines practical solutions, such as collaborative frameworks between educators and SLPs, Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and advanced technologies like AI-powered tools. By adjusting instruction to accommodate a range of communication needs, these interventions make sure that kids can succeed in inclusive classrooms. Speech pathology has changed from solitary clinical practice to teamwork in educational institutions. Teachers and SLPs help students overcome communication barriers and actively participate in learning by incorporating strategies including individualized education plans (IEPs) and accessible teaching approaches. This essay also discusses possible avenues for systemic transformation. Standardized regulations, greater training for teachers in communication assistance, and more resources for SLPs could all benefit education as a whole. In order to guarantee that every student has access to a worthwhile education, this literature review highlights the significance of ongoing studies.

The integration of universal design learning principles and methodologies into pedagogical practices has gained significant attention in recent years. Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a framework that emphasizes creating accessible and inclusive educational experiences to accommodate all students, including diverse learners. This study explores the implementation of UDL principles in teaching mathematics in inclusive classrooms in Sri Lanka. The aim of this study was to identify how a teacher uses lesson plans according to UDL and to identify the challenges when applying UDL frameworks to make lesson plans. The phenomenological research design, belonging to the qualitative approach was used as the research methodology. The sample was selected under non-random sampling. Observations and interviews were used to collect data. Data analysis was conducted using narrative analysis and thematic analysis. The study highlights that the teacher did her best to represent three core principles of UDL: (1) providing multiple means of representation, (2) providing multiple means of action and expression, and (3) providing multiple means of engagement. Furthermore, the research identifies challenges in adopting UDL practices, including resource constraints, lack of awareness among educators, and limited professional development opportunities. Addressing these barriers is critical to successfully integrating UDL principles into mainstream education systems.

Reviews of evidence have shown that elementary school students show enhanced speech, language, and/or literacy outcomes when speech-language pathologists (SLPs) and classroom teachers collaborate in planning and delivery of services. However, such collaboration is uncommon. The purpose of this qualitative interview study was to examine the experiences and views of elementary SLPs and classroom teachers in collaborating with one another. Semistructured interviews using matched sets of prompts were used to investigate the experiences and opinions of 13 SLPs and 16 elementary teachers regarding collaboration, specific scenarios of collaboration, and preferred collaborative models. A qualitative analysis was used to analyze the interviews. The results support previous research findings that SLPs and teachers spend a low proportion of their time collaborating, and SLPs are rarely involved in classroom-based intervention. Teachers were favorably disposed toward classroom-based intervention. Both SLPs and classroom teachers expressed a wish to collaborate, but noted challenges including time, difficulty targeting goals in the classroom, and classroom distractions. Building relationships can increase the likelihood of collaboration occurring. Both SLPs and classroom teachers agree that collaboration is desirable for supporting student success and that current practices are not ideal. SLPs and classroom teachers noted the importance of building relationships and expressing their willingness to engage in collaboration.

The Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework was named in the supporting documents for the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) as a means of helping all students, especially those with disabilities, to meet and exceed the rigorous expectations. This article will describe the principles of UDL, show how educational teams use the framework to design instruction to teach the CCSS with examples from science and English language arts, and finally explore how the implementation of UDL provides an opportunity for speech-language pathologists to play a critical role in school improvement and instructional design and support.

Universal design for learning (UDL)-an instructional design framework that promotes expert learning by promoting accessibility and reducing of barriers to learning-is gaining momentum on the global stage. However, UDL implementations with deaf or deafdisabled learners remain limited. This study examined how UDL enabled educators of deafdisabled learners to design instruction that promoted independence. This study asked, (1) What patterns emerged when teachers used UDL to design instruction for deafdisabled students? and (2) How did teachers of deafdisabled students use UDL to promote learner-centered skills and independence? Following a UDL training, teachers designed, implemented, and reflected on a UDL-based lesson. Results indicate that the use of teacher-driven guidelines was impacted by characteristics of the students, teacher, and lesson. While teachers noted the importance of learner-driven guidelines, they experienced challenges that limited implementation. This study illustrates how instruction targeting learner-driven UDL guidelines can promote independence in students who are deafdisabled. Findings indicate that engaging in additional teacher education and research is key to ensuring educators of deafdisabled learners have opportunities to develop the knowledge and skill to understand and apply UDL.

HyFlex course design is a delivery model that provides students the flexibility to attend face-to-face, online synchronously, or asynchronously. In order to support students in HyFlex college classes, instructors must prepare engaging, accessible, and equitable learning opportunities for all learners. However, it can be difficult for college instructors to create learning environments that help students feel belonging and engagement in HyFlex courses. In this Quick Fix article, we explain how the guidelines for Universal Design for Learning (UDL) overlap with and align with Beatty’s fundamental values of HyFlex learning, specifically in bimodal course design (i.e., online synchronous and face-to-face). UDL allows for diverse learners to participate in learning experiences through multiple means of engagement, representation, and action and expression. These components are all broadly tied to the HyFlex value of accessibility, which allows access for all learners to diverse modalities of instruction, but UDL and HyFlex can be leveraged to support all students both with and without disabilities. We first expand upon how UDL guidelines and HyFlex values complement each other, and then we give examples of strategies to put into action for using UDL in HyFlex college courses. While there has been much research on each UDL and HyFlex approaches to support college instructors, the merging of the values within these theories is novel, and this pairing has implications for direct practice implementation in the classroom. This paper introduces a concept that can be further elaborated on in other conceptual works and potentially lead to new theoretical frameworks. Additionally, future research could explore how UDL and HyFlex approaches enhance each other in college courses and other areas of education.
