Unlocking new opportunities in the industry 4.0 era, exploring the critical impact of digital technology on sustainable performance and the mediating role of GSCM practices

In order to expand on the scope of research on partnership governance, this study explored the impact of relationship trust, stakeholder environmental awareness, and regenerative innovation on environmental performance. The study participants were primarily employees of legitimate public waste disposal and treatment facilities in the six special municipalities of Taiwan (including domestic and overseas facilities). The investigation was conducted via a questionnaire survey. A total of 1000 questionnaires were distributed and 550 were recovered, of which 539 were valid, indicating an effective recovery rate of 53.9%. Data analysis was conducted by structural equation modeling. The empirical results showed that relationship trust had a significant and positive impact on stakeholders’ environmental awareness, which, in turn, had a significant and positive impact on regenerative innovation. Relationship trust had no direct and significant impact on regenerative innovation. Hence, the impact of relationship trust on regenerative innovation is mediated by stakeholders’ environmental awareness. The results also showed that regenerative innovation had a significant and positive impact on environmental management performance, and no significant impact on environmental operational performance. Hence, the impact of regenerative innovation on environmental management performance is not mediated by environmental operational performance.

Environmental Investment and Firm Performance: A Panel VAR Approach

By combining agency theory and the resource- and capabilities-based view, this paper aims to unveil the influence of family firm heterogeneity on environmental performance. Previous results are inconsistent about how the specific features of this type of business contribute to better environmental protection performance. We analyse a number of variables related to the management, ownership and corporate governance characteristics of the family business and their individual influence on environmental performance. We test our hypotheses using a database of 748 family firms in the Spanish tourism sector. This economic sector, which is mostly composed of family businesses, puts great pressure on the environment. As such, family firms must take an active role in the resolution of the environmental problems that afflict society. We find that the effects of a family-controlled ownership and management structure on environmental performance are negative. Family-founder firms with a high degree of family control also are shown to have a negative relationship with environmental performance. However, the existence of a formal management mechanism, such as a management committee, emerges as the most powerful structural factor in facilitating the achievement of environmental objectives. The conclusions drawn from this study allow us to outline future lines of research as well as recommendations for practitioners. Our study responds to the call made in the literature to delve deeper into the heterogeneity of the family business, and specifically to determine which of its characteristic features allow this type of business to achieve better environmental performance.

ABSTRACTResearch Question/IssueThis study investigates whether and how corporate governance influences environmental and social performance in Chinese firms. Two mechanisms of corporate governance are examined: external (shareholder‐focused) and internal (CSR strategy‐ and management‐focused).Research Findings/InsightsThe findings reveal a significant positive effect of corporate governance on environmental and social performance in China, mainly driven by firms' CSR strategy‐focused governance practices. State ownership of enterprises significantly moderates how governance affects both environmental and social performance, with positive and negative moderation observed for external and internal governance mechanisms, respectively. Furthermore, an environmental regulation shock accentuates the positive influence of corporate governance on environmental performance but not on social performance.Theoretical/Academic ImplicationsThe main theoretical insight reflects a shift in the governance discourse from “conflict of interest” to “differentiation of interest” between shareholders and managers regarding sustainability concerns. The results shed light on the considerable differences between shareholder and manager behaviors toward environmental and/or social practices.Practitioner/Policy ImplicationsThis study informs firms and regulators on corporate governance's nonfinancial implications in China. Reforming governance characteristics can be a key factor for firms aiming to improve their environmental and social performance, specifically by re‐envisioning their internal governance mechanisms that are CSR strategy‐oriented. From the government perspective, we provide insights into how, through ownership and regulatory interventions, governance mechanisms tend to balance environmental and social performance in China.

PurposeDigitalization and digital strategy have become one of the variant concepts these days since the fourth industrial revolution 4.0. The earlier debate a on the role of digital strategy and degree of digitalization for environmental and sustainable performance of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) is at its nascent stages. This study aims to investigate the impact of digital strategy and digitalization on the environmental performance in Pakistani SME’s during the pandemic times. In addition, it explores the mediating role of five measures of digitalization degree such as overall digitalization degree (ODD), digitalization methods (OM), digital technology adaptation (DTA), digital product services (DPS) and digital processes (DP).MethodsThis study collected data from 298 respondents using random sampling technique. The unit of analysis was managerial staff and employees working for the organization for last 5 years. To investigate the relationship between constructs, we considered Structural-equation modeling (SEM) using SMART-PLS.ResultsBuilding on the contingency theory, the findings of the research reveal that digital strategy showed a positive impact on digitalization measures but negatively impacted on overall environmental performance. In addition, (DP) ODD, OM, and DPS showed a (negative) positive meaningful impact on environmental performance and (partially) fully mediated the relationship between digital strategy and environmental performance. The digital strategy failed to improve the environmental performance however the role of digitalization is crucial to ensure environmental sustainability.ConclusionsDigital strategy alone fails to alleviate the pressure on environmental performance however excessive digitalization can aggravate the adverse consequences on environment. This research provides useful implications for governments and policymakers to avoid excessive digitalization.

This research investigates the impact of Return on Assets (ROA), Debt to Equity Ratio (DER), Sales Growth, and Gender Diversity on Environmental Performance (EP) among 75 companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange participating in the PROPER program from 2019 to 2022. The study employs a random effects model. The findings indicate that ROA, DER, Sales Growth, and Gender Diversity significantly influence EP. Specifically, Firm Size (FZ) moderates the impact of DER on EP. However, Firm Size does not significantly moderate the effects of ROA, Sales Growth, and Gender Diversity on EP. The research provides insights into factors contributing to the financial performance of companies and the moderating role of firm size. The novelty of the study lies in the moderating role of firm size in the relationship between ROA, DER, Sales Growth, and Gender Diversity with environmental performance. The research contributes to legitimacy, stakeholder, and agency theories. Policymakers can leverage these insights to formulate strategies that encourage corporate sustainability. This study offers valuable information for companies aiming to enhance both environmental and financial performance, ultimately contributing to broader societal well-being.

Effects of proactive environmental strategy on environmental performance: Mediation and moderation analyses

There are still many companies in Indonesia that do not pay attention to environmental performance. Environmental disclosure performance is currently mandatory disclosure, so it is mandatory for go public companies to disclose their environmental performance as a manifestation of the company's responsibility for the activities it carries out. This study aims to determine the effect of environmental costs and environmental information disclosure on environmental performance in manufacturing companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange from 2015-2019. The research sampling technique used purposive sampling method with data analysis using the Structural Equation Modeling method. The software used is partial least square with the Warp-PLS analysis tool. The results of testing the first hypothesis show that environmental costs have a positive and insignificant effect on environmental performance, while the second hypothesis shows that environmental information disclosure has a positive and significant effect on environmental performance. This research is important to do as a study material for the manufacturing industry related to environmental performance

This study explores an integrated reporting system of Thai-listed companies disclosing environmental and social performance in Thai context, and how integrated reports create sustainable value to stakeholders and users. A set of questionnaires is created to conduct Fifty-two of Thai companies listed in the Stock Exchange of Thailand. The samples are selected from five sectors including Transport, Machinery, Metal product, Electricity, Finance and banking, Food and beverage, Petroleum, and Telecommunication. Environmental and social performance indicators in annual reports and corporate social responsibility (CSR) are targeted for investigation. Correlation analysis methods are employed to test hypotheses. This study found that Thai-listed companies incorporated environmental and social performance in reporting system to satisfy information needs of stakeholders and users. Environmental and social performance integrated in the reports aims to create sustainable value in the eye of stakeholders and investors. To improve environmental performance (EP), companies take environmental initiatives (EIs) that are disclosed in environmental social governance (ESG) reports. Studies have revealed positive or negative relationships between ESG disclosure and the EP of companies. However, fewer studies have explored the contents of EIs to know their effectiveness in EP. Therefore, this study investigated the EI contents and their correlation with EP disclosed in the ESG reports of 10 international construction firms. Through case studies, a total of 68 EIs were identified from 10 ESG reports and their corresponding EP values (PVs) were evaluated. Relevant studies were adopted to determine the levels of initiative (LI) and PV scores. The results indicate a positive and moderate correlation (ρ = 0.59) between LI and PV, which means EIs disclosed at higher content levels were correlated with improved EP. This finding encourages companies to ensure appropriate contents and effectiveness of EIs when adopting them, and helps stakeholders gauge a company’s efforts in reducing environmental impact.

Tracing the Influence of Corporate Environmental Practices on Environmental and Financial Returns

Purpose This study aims to investigate the effect of environmental, social and governance performance on dividend payout and whether this association is influenced by the size of the firm. Design/methodology/approach Our sample involves 1,040 firm-year observations of Indian-listed firms from 2017 to 2021. This study uses a panel data fixed effects model, a two-step system generalized method of moments and a two-stage least squares regression approach. We also use a different proxy for dividend payout in our models to ensure the robustness of our findings. Findings Our results reveal a positive association of environmental, social and governance performance with dividend payout. The individual components, i.e. environmental performance, social performance and governance performance, also highlight similar positive relationships, stating that sustainable firms prefer more dividend payments. After introducing the moderating factor as the firm’s size, the findings indicate that large-size sustainable firms prefer lower dividend payouts. Practical implications Our results have vital implications for potential investors, policymakers, managers and other stakeholders, given that the firm’s size impacts the sustainability and dividend payout practices. Originality/value To the author’s knowledge, this is the first study to capture the moderating role of a firm’s size on the nexus of environmental, social and governance performance and dividend payout in the Indian context.

PurposeThis study aims to examine how servitization affects the environmental and social performance of manufacturing firms.Design/methodology/approachThe hypotheses are tested using fixed-effect panel models based on secondary data of 1,413 manufacturing firms publicly listed in the USA.FindingsResults show that servitization is positively related to the social performance of manufacturing firms; this positive relationship is more prominent under high levels of human resource slack. However, the impact of servitization on environmental performance depends on the level of absorptive capacity and human resource slack. Servitization improves environmental performance under high levels of absorptive capacity and human resource slack, while this positive impact is insignificant under low levels of absorptive capacity and human resource slack.Research limitations/implicationsThe study focuses on the degree (depth) of servitization but ignores the scope of services provided by manufacturing firms (breadth of servitization).Practical implicationsThis research suggests that servitization is an effective way of achieving simultaneous improvements in environmental and social performance. However, high levels of absorptive capacity and human resource slack are needed to achieve this goal.Originality/valueThis study contributes to the servitization literature by demonstrating the environmental and social sustainability benefits of servitization. The findings also highlight the crucial role of absorptive capacity and human resource slack on improving environmental and social performance through servitization.
