To measure and compare perceived financial burden, use of services, and perceived unmet service needs of supporters of demented and non-demented elderly people. Comparison study of age and sex matched demented and non-demented elderly people and their supporters. 25 primary health care teams in Dundee. 114 community resident elderly (age over 65) people with dementia, 114 age and sex matched comparators, and the main informal supporter of each elderly person. Carers' perceptions of financial impact of looking after an old person, service use (from a list of locally available services), unmet service needs, and needs for three types of generic service (help with supervision, housework, or personal care). Financial impact was low, except for extra household expense in the dementia group. There was significantly greater use of mainstream domiciliary and day care services in the dementia group. Dementia was nevertheless associated with a high level of unmet need, mainly for more mainstream support and help with supervision of the elderly person. Supervisory care for demented elderly people should be further developed within an expanded domiciliary service to meet supporters needs.

The TV series Kojak, produced by CBS and starring Greek American actor Telly Savalas, is discussed as a typical product of the post-Watergate rise to prominence of white ethnics in the American mainstream. The show was built on a project aimed at a new audience distrusting U.S. society’s ability to promote the welfare of its diverse population. To appeal to this growing demography, the series promoted a new hero who combined the marginality of immigrant status and belief in the American system. This was achieved thanks to the exploitation of Savalas’s visible and public Greekness. By framing ethnic characters inside a field of tension created within the opposition between family values and the corporate world, the show portrayed ethnics—in particular of Greek and Italian origin—not as stereotypes, but as individuals who shared worldview and attitudes with the largely WASP viewing public.

Domiciliary dental care is an important and growing area of treatment provision. However, adequate training is required in order to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to perform such care. This article draws attention to the likely increase in demand for domiciliary dental care services and the reasons for it; and highlights the issues and skills involved for dentists, hygienists and their teams in providing domiciliary dental care in order to facilitate quality of care and safe practice.

2 The politics of fiscal welfare: the tax reduction on domiciliary care and household services in France and Sweden

Objective: To explore the reasons given for refusal of day services, and to examine the relationship between willingness to accept day services and clinical variables. Method: Fifty people with dementia who lived alone and had refused day services were interviewed. Results: The most common reasons for reluctance to attend day services were the belief that they did not need day services, that they liked being on their own, and the belief that they would not enjoy it. People who persistently refused day services tended to have additional worries about meeting new people, losing their independence and being institutionalised. Fifty-four per cent of people with dementia who lived alone and had refused day services scored six or more on the Cornell Scale for Depression in Dementia, suggesting possible presence of major depression. Conclusion: In patients with dementia who live alone and refuse day services, their misconceptions about day services and possibility of undiagnosed depression need further exploration.

Cord blood from 2,220 male babies of Greek, Italian and Yugoslav origin, born consecutively over a four-year period at The Royal Women's Hospital, Melbourne, were screened by enzyme electrophoresis for glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency. The group comprised 1,220 babies of Greek, 600 of Italian and 400 of Yugoslav origin. G6PD deficiency occurred most commonly in the group of Greek babies, and 4-6% of these babies were deficient, while G6PD deficiency was detected in 1-2% of Italian and 0-3% of Yugoslav babies. These percentages are similar to those reported in Greece, Italy and Yugoslavia, and give some indication of the incidence of G6PD deficiency in people of Mediterranean origin in Australia.

Background: Antenatal care and effective services are the hallmarks of effective pregnancy outcome. Thus, practices by community care providers throughout labor and childbirth might affect health outcomes of newborns. There is a need for proper antenatal checkups in hospital and domiciliary care by community health workers and importance of antenatal care on pregnancy outcomes. Since, every woman has a right to safe delivery that must include proper labor management protocols. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to compare and assess the antenatal care of hospital based and domiciliary services on the outcome of delivery. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted from November 2018-April 2019. A sample size of about 300 married females was selected from different towns of Peshawar through non-probability convenient sampling technique. Data was collected using semi structured questionnaire after taking informed consent from the women. Data were analyzed by using SPSS. Chi square test was applied for associations between hospital and domiciliary services and antenatal outcomes in both setups. p-value &lt; 0.05 was considered significant. Results: The comparison of hospital and domiciliary services on the outcome of newborn and mother, showed better services of hospital. Domiciliary care services showed increased number of complications in females during delivery (p-value&lt;0.05) and in newborn (p-value&lt; 0.05) compared to hospital services. Conclusion: Hospital services provide antenatal care by trained person majority of deliveries were normal, while in cases of domiciliary-based services majority faced complications during pregnancy and delivery. It is intuitively reasonable and eminently logical to give injured workers the opportunity to receive rehabilitation services designed to speed their return to work. Rehabilitation would seem to be an inseparable part of workers’ compensation, and yet recent events demonstrate anew how incompatible the two programs may be. The states of Washington and Colorado have amended their laws to cut back on their commitment to mandatory rehabilitation, and the rehabilitation provisions of the workers’ compensation laws in California, Minnesota, and Florida are under attack. The Beveridge Report on social insurance (1942) proposed the extension and co-ordination of existing social insurance schemes on the assumption that a comprehensive national health service would be required to achieve medical objectives envisaged in the Report. Beveridge took the view that social insurance should cover all income groups and their dependents. But he regarded restoration of a sick person to health as a duty of the state prior to any other consideration. Events of the 1939–44 war (like that of 1914–18) had concerted public opinion in favour of widespread changes which would promote greater social justice and equality in Britain. Consequently, the Beveridge Report was greeted with enthusiasm such as had never before and has never since been experienced when proposals for social reform have been made.(1)

Psychiatric rehabilitation aims to promote health recovery from significant losses, both physical and psychological, that have derailed the lives of adults and young adults diagnosed with a serious mental illness (SMI) so that they can actively participate in rebuilding and recreating themselves. The population faces premature morbidity and experiences higher than average rates of chronic and life-threatening disorders. When participants join the BU Center for Psychiatric Rehabilitation services’ programs, they take on the role of student, increasing their knowledge, skills, and supports to further their personal goals and recovery journeys. The submission, Musical Odyssey: From Pain to Recovery, is an original poem informed by the values and practices of my work in the field of psychiatric rehabilitation as well as my recent medical experience as a patient. The poem was inspired primarily by my four-month experience of having to navigate through the primary care system and advocate for myself to get services for two herniated discs while working. During this period I was teaching three courses: Empowering Ourselves through Song, Buddhist Psychology’s Path of Recovery, and Mindfulness: The Practice of Buddhist Psychology.In the 2018 fall semester, I was role modeling recovery-oriented rehabilitation for my students, a Certified Peer Support Specialist, and three interns (two from BU School of Social Work and one from Tufts University). Despite excruciating pain from two herniated discs, I taught almost all the classes before and after a micro-discectomy and hemi-laminectomy surgery at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and prepared detailed lesson plans for my interns who had the opportunity to develop their clinical and teachings skills while receiving my support. My suffering and sharing of daily meditation, music listening, and singing helped grow everyone’s awareness, compassion, and commitment to mindfulness practice.
