Abstract

In this article, the effect of motion artifact (MA) contamination on derivative based R-peak detection algorithm over single channel Electrocardiogram (ECG) signal is proposed. In addition, using the correlations between various frequency subbands, a new discrete wavelet transform-based MA removal approach from ECG signal was implemented. Initially, the single lead clean ECG signal was manually contaminated with standard noise signal, and features of clean ECG beats were extracted using Principal Component Analysis. Now using these features, the noise signal was eliminated beat-wise, by analyzing the frequency subband, which were affected by the MA contamination. Finally, a comparison of R-peak detection in clean, noisy, and denoised ECG signals was carried out. The noise signal was obtained from the ‘em’ signal available in MITBIH Noise Stress Test Database, and the experimental result was performed on 35 MITBIH arrythmia records. It was observed that the overall improvement of signal to noise ratio was 7.85 dB with an input SNR of 0 dB. An average sensitivity and positive predictivity of the three types of signals mentioned above, were obtained as 99.45 and 99.13, 96.55 and 87.47, 98.93, 97.94, respectively. A comparative study with previously published work ensured overall better performance of the proposed article.
