Abstract

Abstract This chapter contains the exposition of the new theory of default Semantics. It is proposed that the problems with compositionality of meaning can be solved when compositionality is viewed ‘one level higher’ as pertaining to merger representations — semantic representations that are a product of the synthesis of information about meaning coming from various sources, such as word meaning, sentence structure, conscious pragmatic inference, cognitive defaults, and social-cultural defaults. Cognitive principles underlying such mergers are proposed, and the foundations of a metalanguage for formalization in relational semantics are specified.
