(Looking for) the heart of abelian Polish groups
We prove that the category M of abelian groups with a Polish cover introduced in collaboration with Bergfalk and Panagiotopoulos is the left heart of (the derived category of) the quasi-abelian category A of abelian Polish groups in the sense of Beilinson–Bernstein–Deligne and Schneiders. Thus, M is an abelian category containing A as a full subcategory such that the inclusion functor A→M is exact and finitely continuous. Furthermore, M is uniquely characterized up to equivalence by the following universal property: for every abelian category B, a functor A→B is exact and finitely continuous if and only if it extends to an exact and finitely continuous functor M→B. In particular, this provides a description of the left heart of A as a concrete category. We provide similar descriptions of the left heart of a number of categories of algebraic structures endowed with a topology, including: non-Archimedean abelian Polish groups; locally compact abelian Polish groups; totally disconnected locally compact abelian Polish groups; Polish R-modules, for a given Polish group or Polish ring R; and separable Banach spaces and separable Fréchet spaces over a separable complete non-Archimedean valued field.

Entropy Bounds on Abelian Groups and the Ruzsa Divergence
Over the past few years, a family of interesting new inequalities for the entropies of sums and differences of random variables has been developed by Ruzsa, Tao and others, motivated by analogous results in additive combinatorics. The present work extends these earlier results to the case of random variables taking values in $\mathbb{R}^n$ or, more generally, in arbitrary locally compact and Polish abelian groups. We isolate and study a key quantity, the Ruzsa divergence between two probability distributions, and we show that its properties can be used to extend the earlier inequalities to the present general setting. The new results established include several variations on the theme that the entropies of the sum and the difference of two independent random variables severely constrain each other. Although the setting is quite general, the result are already of interest (and new) for random vectors in $\mathbb{R}^n$. In that special case, quantitative bounds are provided for the stability of the equality conditions in the entropy power inequality; a reverse entropy power inequality for log-concave random vectors is proved; an information-theoretic analog of the Rogers-Shephard inequality for convex bodies is established; and it is observed that some of these results lead to new inequalities for the determinants of positive-definite matrices. Moreover, by considering the multiplicative subgroups of the complex plane, one obtains new inequalities for the differential entropies of products and ratios of nonzero, complex-valued random variables.

We prove that there exists a countable metrizable topological group G G such that every countable metrizable group is isomorphic to a quotient of G G . The completion H H of G G is a Polish group such that every Polish group is isomorphic to a quotient of H H .

The purpose of this paper is first to show that if X is any locally compact but not compact perfect Polish space and Open image in new window stands for the one-point compactification of X, while EX is the equivalence relation which is defined on the Polish group C(X,R+*) by Open image in new window where f, g are in C(X,R+*), then EX is induced by a turbulent Polish group action. Second we show that given any Open image in new window if we identify the n-dimensional unit sphere Sn with the one-point compactification of Rn via the stereographic projection, while En,r is the equivalence relation which is defined on the Polish group Cr(Rn,R+*) by Open image in new window where f, g are in Cr(Rn,R+*), then En,r is also induced by a turbulent Polish group action.

We show that all groups of a distinguished class of «large» topological groups, that of Roelcke precompact Polish groups, have Kazhdan’s Property (T). This answers a question of Tsankov and generalizes previous results by Bekka (for the infinite-dimensional unitary group) and by Evans and Tsankov (for oligomorphic groups). Further examples include the group \({{\,\mathrm{Aut}\,}}(\mu )\) of measure-preserving transformations of the unit interval and the group \({{\,\mathrm{Aut}\,}}^*(\mu )\) of non-singular transformations of the unit interval.More precisely, we prove that the smallest cocompact normal subgroup \(G^\circ \) of any given non-compact Roelcke precompact Polish group G has a free subgroup \(F\le G^\circ \) of rank two with the following property: every unitary representation of \(G^\circ \) without invariant unit vectors restricts to a multiple of the left-regular representation of F. The proof is model-theoretic and does not rely on results of classification of unitary representations. Its main ingredient is the construction, for any \(\aleph _0\)-categorical metric structure, of an action of a free group on a system of elementary substructures with suitable independence conditions.

A subset X of a Polish group G is called Haar null if there exist a Borel set B ⊃ X and Borel probability measure μ on G such that μ(gBh) = 0 for every g; h ∊ G. We prove that there exist a set X ⊂ R that is not Lebesgue null and a Borel probability measure μ such that μ (X + t) = 0 for every t ∊ R. This answers a question from David Fremlin’s problem list by showing that one cannot simplify the definition of a Haar null set by leaving out the Borel set B. (The answer was already known assuming the Continuum Hypothesis.)This result motivates the following Baire category analogue. It is consistent with ZFC that there exist an abelian Polish group G and a Cantor set C ⊂ G such that for every non-meagre set X ⊂ G there exists a t ∊ G such that C ∩ (X + t) is relatively non-meagre in C. This essentially generalizes results of Bartoszyński and Burke–Miller.

We prove that if G is a Polish group and A a group admitting a system of generators whose associated length function satisfies: (i) if 0 < k < ω , then l g ( x ) ≤ l g ( x k ) ; (ii) if l g ( y ) < k < ω and x k = y , then x = e , then there exists a subgroup G * of G of size b (the bounding number) such that G * is not embeddable in A. In particular, we prove that the automorphism group of a countable structure cannot be an uncountable right-angled Artin group. This generalizes analogous results for free and free abelian uncountable groups.

A Reflexive Admissible Topological Group must be Locally Compact
Let G be a reflexive topological group, and Gits group of characters, endowed with the compact open topology. We prove that the evaluation mapping from Gx G into the torus T is continuous if and only if G is locally compact. This is an analogue of a well-known theorem of Arens on admissible topologies on C(X) . DEFINITIONS AND REMARKS Let X, Y be topological spaces, and let Z be a subset of yX . A topology on Z is said to be admissible if the evaluation mapping from the product Z x X into Y, defined by w(f, x) = f(x), is continuous. Let (S, V) = {f E Z; f(S) C V}. The family {(S, V)}, where S runs over the collection of all compact subsets of X and V runs over a basis of open sets in Y, is a subbase for the compact open topology on Z. An admissible topology on Z must be finer than the compact open topology [8]. A result of Arens states that the existence of a coarsest admissible topology for the class of real continuous functions on a completely regular space X is equivalent to X being locally compact [1]. In this paper we are interested in reflexive topological groups. Answering in the negative a question of Megrelishvili [7], we will see that the evaluation map for those groups need not be continuous. In fact, as specified in the theorem, the continuity of the evaluation characterizes locally compact Hausdorff abelian groups among reflexive groups. We prove this result by means of convergence spaces. For an account of theory of convergence spaces the reader is referred to [3, 4]. We only give here needed definitions. Let G be a Hausdorff topological abelian group, and let FG be the set of all continuous homomorphisms from G into the unidimensional torus T. If addition is defined pointwise in FG, it becomes an abelian group. We prove two theorems in the ergodic theory of infinite permutation groups. First, generalizing a theorem of Nessonov for the infinite symmetric group, we show that every non-singular action of a non-archimedean, Roelcke precompact, Polish group on a measure space $(\Omega , \mu )$ admits an invariant $\sigma $-finite measure equivalent to $\mu $. Second, we prove the following de Finetti-type theorem: if $G \curvearrowright M$ is a primitive permutation group with no algebraicity verifying an additional uniformity assumption, which is automatically satisfied if $G$ is Roelcke precompact, then any $G$-invariant, ergodic probability measure on $Z^{M}$, where $Z$ is a Polish space, is a product measure.

In this work, we concern ourselves with particular topics in Polish space theory. We first consider the space A(U) of complex-analytic functions on an open set U endowed with the usual topology of uniform convergence on compact subsets. With the operations of point-wise addition and point-wise multiplication, A(U) is a Polish ring. Inspired by L. Bers' algebraic characterization of the relation of conformality, we show that the topology on A(U) is the only Polish topology for which A(U) is a Polish ring for a large class of U. This class of U includes simply connected regions, simply connected regions excluding a relatively discrete set of points, and other domains of usual interest. One thing that we deduce from this is that, even though C has many different Polish field topologies, as long as it sits inside another Polish ring with enough complex-analytic functions, it must have its usual topology. In a different direction, we show that the bounded complex-analytic functions on the unit disk admits no Polish topology for which it is a Polish ring. We also study the Lie ring structure on A(U) which turns out to be a Polish Lie ring with the usual topology. In this case, we restrict our attention to those domains U that are connected. We extend a result of I. Amemiya to see that the Lie ring structure is determined by the conformal structure of U. In a similar vein to our ring considerations, we see that, again for certain domains U of usual interest, the Lie ring A(U) has a unique Polish topology for which it is a Polish Lie ring. Again, the Lie ring A(U) imposes topological restrictions on C. That is, C must have its usual topology when sitting inside any Polish Lie ring isomorphic to A(U). In the last chapter, we introduce a new ideal of subsets of Polish spaces consisting of what we call residually null sets. From this ideal, we introduce an algebra consisting of what we call R-sets which is consistently a strict extension of the algebra of Baire property sets. We show that the algebra of R-sets is closed under the Alexandrov-Suslin operation and generalize Pettis' Theorem. From this, we provide new automatic continuity results and give a generalization of a result of D. Montgomery which shows that minimal assumptions on the continuity of group operations of an abstract group G with a Polish topology imply that G is actually a Polish group. We also see that many results pertaining to the algebra of Baire property sets generalize to the context of R-sets.
