Concurrent programming on microcomputers

Additive Manufacturing is increasingly used in the development of new products: from conceptual design to functional parts and tooling. However, today, variability in part quality due to inadequate dimensional tolerances, surface roughness, and defects, limits its broader acceptance for highvalue or mission-critical applications. While process control in general can limit this variability, it is impeded by a lack of adequate process measurement methods. Process control today is based on heuristics and experimental data, yielding limited improvement in part quality. The overall goal is to develop the measurement science 1 necessary to make in-process measurement and real-time control possible in additive manufacturing. Traceable dimensional and thermal metrology methods must be developed for real-time closed-loop control of additive manufacturing processes. As a precursor, this report presents a review on the additive manufacturing control schemes, process measurements, and modeling and simulation methods as it applies to the powder bed fusion process, though results from other processes are reviewed where applicable. The aim of the review is to identify and summarize the measurement science needs that are critical to real-time process control. We organize our research findings to identify the correlations between process parameters, process signatures, and product quality. The intention of this report is to serve as a background reference and a go-to place for our work to identify the most suitable measurement methods and corresponding measurands for real-time control.

Additive manufacturing is a promising manufacturing process with diverse applications, but ensuring the quality and reliability of the manufactured products is a key challenge. The digital twin has emerged as a technology solution to address this challenge, allowing real-time monitoring and control of the manufacturing process. This paper proposes a digital twin system framework for additive manufacturing that integrates machine learning models, employing Unity, OctoPrint, and Raspberry Pi for real-time control and monitoring. Particularly, the system utilizes machine learning models for defect detection, achieving an Average Precision (AP) score of 92%, with specific performance metrics of 91% for defected objects and 94% for non-defected objects, demonstrating high efficiency. The Unity client user interface is also developed for control and visualization, facilitating easy additive manufacturing process monitoring. This research article presents a detailed description of the proposed digital twin framework and its workflow for implementation, the machine learning models, and the Unity client user interface. It also demonstrates the effectiveness of the integrated system through case studies and experimental results. The main findings show that the proposed digital twin system met its functional requirements and effectively detects defects and provides real-time control and monitoring of the additive manufacturing process. This paper contributes to the growing field of digital twin technology and additive manufacturing, providing a promising solution for enhancing the quality and reliability in the field of additive manufacturing.

Distributed software development is becoming a common practice among developers. Factors such as the development environments improvement, their extensibility, and the emergence of social networking software are leading factors. They lead the development process (both co-located and geographically distributed) to a practice that: 1) improves the team’s productivity, and 2) encourages and supports the social interaction among the teams’ members. The above factors along with the distributed development emergence, Integrated Development Environments (IDEs) evolution, and the social media advances got the attention of the software development teams, and made them consider how to better assist the social nature of software developers, and the social aspects of software development, including activity awareness of team members’ progress, their presence, collaboration, communication, and coordination around shared artifacts. IDEs are the most commonly used tools by developers and programmers. Integrating the most needed development tools inside the IDE, makes it a Collaborative Development Environment (CDE), and embedding a variety of social software features within a CDE helps support distributed development teams. It also creates a new genera of tools called Social Development Environments or “SDEs” as it is commonly called. This article discusses the origins and development of “SDEs”. It reflects and presents the research into development environments, explaining their role in supporting the communication and coordination needs of development teams. Also, it presents the effect of embedding social network features in such environments. It presents some emerging SDEs and future work. Finally, it concludes by introducing a new model named 5-star that classifies, and helps to evaluate and compare the collaborative tools. 5-star presents a new way to compare and evaluate the SDE systems based on their supported features. It bases the comparison on five major categories including: Communication, Coordination, Collaboration, Awareness & Presence, and Social networking (SN) tools.

Responding to the fact that software systems become more and more complex and mutable, not only the software-standards-related technologies should be adopted, but the environments for software development and evolution should also be flexible and integratable. These facts make software development and maintenance difficult and costly. In this chapter, we first illustrate the activities and studies for software standards, processes, CASE toolsets, and environments. Then, we propose a process and an environment for evolution-oriented software development, called the PRocess and Agent-based Integrated Software development Environment (PRAISE). PRAISE advocates software development with popular software methodologies, and it uses an XML-based mechanism to unify the various paradigms with different standards. It integrates processes, roles, toolsets, and work products to make software development more efficient. With PRAISE, users are encouraged to adopt familiar mechanisms and formal approaches as they wish. PRAISE maintains the consistency of the paradigms so that users do not need to worry about conflicts with other paradigms that are built in or added later. PRAISE meets the need for evolving software development and maintenance.

FACILE is a language which symmetrically integrates concurrent and functional programming. It is a typed and statically scoped language. The language supports both function and process abstractions. Recursive functions may be defined and used within processes, and processes can be dynamically created during expression evaluation. Inter-process communication is by hand-shaking on typed channels. Typed channels, functions and process scripts are first-class values.In this paper, we present the “core” syntax of FACILE. We then describe an abstract machine C-FAM which executes concurrent processes evaluating functional style expressions. The operational definition of FACILE is presented by giving compilation rules from FACILE to C-FAM instructions, and execution rules for the abstract machine. : This final technical report summarizes the research accomplished under the Expert Science and Engineering (ES&E) program by the University of California at Berkeley through Syracuse University. The research effort, entitled 'Parallel Extensions for Object Oriented Programming', examined communication aspects leading to language support for parallel computation. The work undertaken in this effort has extended concurrent programming languages in their communication primitives. Although many abstraction mechanisms have been used in programming languages, including control abstraction mechanisms (such as procedures) and data abstraction mechanisms (such as data types), communication abstraction mechanisms have been found to be the most useful for parallel/ concurrent programming paradigms. Work accomplished in this effort has extended those mechanisms, concentrating on inter-process communication. A formal model for concurrent systems, called the Synchronous Token-based Communicating State (STOCS) model, has been used to model and analyze concurrent systems. Since present concurrent languages do not support any form of analysis of the communication structure of programs, two new constructs based on STOCS formalism have been developed to support high level specification - handshake and unit. A fair and efficient algorithm for execution of multi-process shared events is also presented.

Processing, besides being a language of sorts, is an integrated development environment (IDE)—an IDE created by artists for artists. The Processing development environment is simple to learn and use, and doesn’t add to the complexity of learning to program, as with many other IDEs. In fact, the Processing IDE really does substantially simplify the process of coding, even for absolute beginners. Even Flash, which is another very popular IDE of sorts, also geared toward artists, has a steep learning curve, and its complexity can get in the way on pure coding projects. Software is rapidly moving from the desktop to the Web. The Web provides a generic user interface that allows ubiquitous access, instant collaboration, integration with other online services, and avoids installation and configuration on desktop computers. For software development, the Web presents a shift away from developer workstations as a silo, and has the promise of closer collaboration and improved feedback through innovations in Web-based interactive development environments (IDEs). Moving IDEs to the Web is not just a matter of porting desktop IDEs; a fundamental reconsideration of the IDE architecture is necessary in order to realize the full potential that the combination of modern IDEs and the Web can offer. This paper discusses research challenges and opportunities in this area, guided by a pilot study of a web IDE implementation.

Software development environments (SDEs) are examined from the environment architect's perspective. The main interest is in investigating two related issues of building SDEs: open architecture and tool integration. A taxonomy of architectural mechanisms that solely determine the underlying architecture of an SDE is presented. The significance of this taxonomy is that it makes it possible to study the intrinsic properties of SDE architecture with respect to technical issues such as portability, tool integration, tool construction, tailorability, and evolution of SDEs. Four types of mechanisms are identified: modeling and schema-definition mechanisms, access mechanisms, interprocess communication mechanisms, and execution mechanisms. These four types of mechanisms reflect the relationship of tools to the SDE architecture. For each type of mechanism, various approaches proposed in the literature are compared and openness and integration are discussed. It is suggested that truly open and integrated SDEs can be achieved through careful selection of architectural mechanisms and good implementation strategies of these mechanisms. >

We propose a sound, complete, and automatic method for pairwise reachability analysis of higher-order concurrent programs with recursion, nested locks, joins, and dynamic thread creation. The method is based on a reduction to higher-order model checking (i.e., model checking of trees generated by higher-order recursion schemes). It can be considered an extension of Gawlitz et al.’s work on the join-lock-sensitive reachability analysis for dynamic pushdown networks (DPN) to higher-order programs. To our knowledge, this is the first application of higher-order model checking to sound and complete verification of (reasonably expressive models of) concurrent programs.

In this paper, a temperature control in real time control process was presented using several control algorithms. A quantitative comparison based on the real power consumption and (the precision and the robustness) of these controllers during the same control process and under the same conditions will be done. The proposed Adaptive and Self Organizing Fuzzy policy has been able to prove its superiority against the remaining controllers. The new Adaptive and Self Organizing Fuzzy Logic Controller starts the control with a very limited information about the controlled process (delay and the monotonicity sign) and without any kind of offline pre-training, the adaptive controller acts online to collect the necessary background to adapt their rules consequents and to self organize their membership functions from the real behavior of the controlled process. The ULowell Data Flow Project combines dataflow hardware, dataflow software, and a data flow development environment. The hardware component, a data flow coprocessor card, utilizes seven NEC 7281 Image Pipelined Processors. Each chip models a static dataflow computation and is programmable. The coprocessor was designed and implemented by ULowell personnel and uses an AMIGA 2000 as a host. The software component currently consists of a library of data flow image processing algorithms and an evolving software development environment. Currently the image processing library includes typical imaging operations such as: edge enhancement, filtering, histogramming, and affine transformation. The software development environment (SDE) is depicted in Figure 1. The SDE contains a Data Flow Graph Editor which programmers use to design their data flow code. The data flow algorithm can then be converted directly into NEC data flow assembly code which is then assembled using the ULowell Data Flow Assembler. The assembler differs from NEC's assembler in that it can produce relocatable code. The object code output of the assembler is given to the Data Flow Resource Manager. The resource manager monitors the available resources within the chips. Thus, if a single process does not totally utilize a chip's table space or memory, then a second process may be concurrently loaded onto the same chip. The ability to have multiple data flow processes coexisting within a single chip is unique to the ULowell environment. The data flow resource manager can download and monitor code to either the hardware or to a software simulator/debugger. The simulator/debugger can monitor and trace data flow tokens as they proceed through the chip. Output of the simulator/debugger can be fed back into the data flow graph editior to visually trace token flow through the original program design. The last component of our SDE is a High Level Language translator which can compile programs written in SISAL, a high level language for parallel computation, down to NEC 7281 assembly language. We have already implemented the relocatable assembler, and the data flow resource manager. Prototype versions of the high level translator, simulator/debugger and graph/editor are currently being implemented.

MAP, a communications protocol for factory automation proposed by General Motors [1], has been accepted by users throughout the world and is rapidly becoming a user standard. In fact, it is now a LAN standard for factory automation. MAP is intended to interconnect different devices, such as computers and programmable devices, made by different manufacturers, enabling them to exchange information. It is based on the OSI intercomputer com-munications protocol standard under development by the ISO. With progress and standardization, MAP is being investigated for application to process control fields other than factory automation [2]. The transmission response time of the network system and centralized management of data exchanged with various devices for distributed control are import-ant in the case of a real-time process control with programmable controllers, computers, and instruments connected to a LAN system. MAP/EPA and MINI MAP aim at reduced overhead in protocol processing and enhanced transmission response. If applied to real-time process control, a protocol based on point-to-point and request-response transactions limits throughput and transmission response. This paper describes an advanced MAP LAN system applied to real-time process control by adding a new data transmission control that performs multicasting communication voluntarily and periodically in the priority order of data to be exchanged.

Many Integrated Development Environment (IDE) can be used to create Android Apps. Android Studio with Java programming language is an IDE and native programming language that is officially supported by Google. As a supported IDE, AS becomes the best IDE that can be used to build apps. Nevertheless, many novice programmers find it difficult to get started especially by starting a new programming concept for mobile devices. Android Studio is also known as an IDE that requires a high specs computer requirement and also has sophisticated features. This research purposed to develop applications with IDEs that are more user-friendly and more emphasize the big concept of programming without much difficulty regarding compiling the program code and also the complexity of IDE as well as Android Studio. The IDE used in this study is App Inventor 2 (AI2), a cloud-based IDE managed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The next goal is to test the capabilities of the application by conducting Blackbox Testing and User Testing. In this research has been developed an app called Receptionist that is used to test the ability of the codes generated by AI2. The results show that AI2 can be used to build complex applications such as Text Message Service (SMS) broadcasting, performing local database queries and retrieving data on the server. However, some features such as database processing should run in the background still run on the UI thread, thereby reducing the user experience when Application Not Responding (ANR) occurs.
