Congestion-Aware Suspicious Object Detection System Using Information-Centric Networking

The Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) is the network of medical devices, hardware infrastructure, and software applications used to connect the healthcare information technology. Massive traffic growth and user expectations cause challenges in the current exhausting models of IoMT data. To reduce the IoMT traffic, Information Centric Network (ICN) is a suitable technique. ICN uses persistent naming multicast communication that reduces the response time. ICN in IoMT provides a promising feature to reduce the overhead due to the distribution of commonly accessed contents. Some parameters such as energy consumption, communication cost, etc., influence the performance of sensors in the IoMT network. Excessive and unbalanced energy consumption degrades the network performance and lifetime. This article presents a framework called Dynamic Cache Scheme (DCS) that implements energy-efficient cache scheduling in IoMT over ICN to reduce network traffic. The proposed framework establishes a balance between the multi-hop traffic and data item freshness. The technique improves the freshness of data; thus, updated data are provided to the end-users via the effective utilization of caching in IoMT. The proposed framework is tested on important parameters, i.e., cache-hit-ratio, stretch, and content retrieval latency. The results obtained are compared with the state-of-the-art models. Results’ analysis shows that the proposed framework outperforms the compared models in terms of cache-hit-ratio, stretch, and content retrieval latency by 59.42%, 32.66%, and 18.8%, respectively. In the future, it is intended to explore the applicability of DCS in more scenarios and optimize further.

A survey of Internet of Things communication using ICN: A use case perspective

Information-centric networking (ICN) is a content-oriented network that uses content instead of traditional IP addresses, it facilitates the content retrieval and calculates downstream paths without the need of an optimal topology. ICN inherits mobility support features in its baseline design. Since the Internet of Things (IoT) faces major problems in supporting mobility management over IP, we believe that ICN would represent a major element in scalable IoT networks. This article discusses the use of ICN as a communication model in IoT environments, focusing on solving the mobility issue. Thus, we survey the relevant work that studies the merger between ICN and IoT, and describe the emergence, evolution, and state-of-the-art mobility approach. This article also presents discussions on major scalability challenges when using ICN as a communication enabler for mobile IoT and highlights key designs and guidelines.

The project is about to implement Internet of Things (IoT) technology in Railways. Goal is to constitute a secure IoT system by using Information Centric Networking (ICN) architecture to comprehend the key requirements of IoT system. The proposed system is based on ICN architecture. ICN is the architecture which supports multicast, mobility and security. Mobility is the necessity here in the proposed IoT system in railways. System contains passenger information which should remain secure. Hence, ICN architecture is used as a base for IoT system in railways. The Internet of Things (IoT) based system is for catering passengers' services and requests in long journey railways. The system is to collect requests from passengers from each coach, track the location of crew members within train and allocate them requests from passengers. This allocation of the requests to the crew members takes place depending on the service arrival time, location information and workload factor of crew member. As proposed project is based on ICN architecture, it will use secure device discovery concept to make system more secure.

Welcome to the first ACM Information Centric Networking (ICN) conference! After a successful series of ACM SIGCOMM ICN and IEEE INFOCOM NOMEN workshops showing a growing interest from the broader networking community, we initiated this new series of ACM conferences starting in 2014 and are very happy to welcome you to the first ACM ICN conference in Paris. Nothing is as powerful as an idea whose time has come (Victor Hugo) and ICN with its concepts of providing access to named data as a first-order network service, of providing object- instead of connection-based security, and of enabling ubiquitous data replication and requestor anonymity is one of those ideas. Efforts in different international research projects have explored ICN benefits for different application areas such as mobile communications, video streaming and distribution, Internet of Things, and data-center communications. ICN is recognized as a major networking research area that relates to established networking research topics such as naming, network security, transport mechanisms, and caching, and has fueled relevant new research work in all of those areas. Starting a new conference series is always associated with challenges. We are particularly happy to report that ICN14 attracted 97 paper submissions, out of which the TPC selected 17 papers for oral presentation and 8 short papers for poster presentations. We are also delighted by the number of received demo proposals and accepted 10 demonstrations for the program. As the first conference in this new series, the program also includes a full day of tutorials to make the audience familiar with the fundamental concepts as well as the frontier of efforts in this new area. The program is completed by an industrial panel discussion with renowned experts from the networking community. We hope that ICN14 will contribute to further advancing the state of the art in networking in general and in ICN in particular.

Information-Centric Networking (ICN) is a promising candidate architecture for the future internet that leverages the content name instead of the source of the content (host address). ICN decouples the content from its original location and owner, and enables in-network caching at the network layer. Similarly, the inception of ioT has enabled futuristic applications and services in almost every walk of life. Due to the nature of Internet of Things (IoT) applications, traditional TCP/IP-based internet architecture faces challenges such as addressing, heterogeneity, availability, scalability, and resource constraints. Therefore, ICN can be a suitable choice to address these challenges in IoT applications. Among other features of ICN, the in-network caching feature increases the availability and efficiency of content-sharing in IoT networks. Therefore, it is essential to have efficient cache placement strategies in ICN to increase its utility. in this regard, in this article, we propose an ICN cache placement strategy at the edge network for IoT applications. More precisely, we design a distributed cache placement scheme that aims to push the popular content to the edge network and keep the relatively less-popular content at the core. We also propose a collaborative mechanism to fetch content from the nearest neighbor's content-store as well as propose a cache replacement policy based on the content popularity. Through extensive simulations, we evaluate the proposed scheme and the obtained results show the efficiency and out-performance against similar strategies in the literature.

Internet of Things (IoT) is increasingly deployed in different domains and environments including smart homes, smart cities, healthcare, industry 4.0, and smart agriculture, by connecting a large number of physical objects to deliver a new class of applications. The rising number of these connected objects and their heterogeneity have raised new research directions and challenges regarding their communications, scalability and the large amount of data that generate. As a result, new communication technologies have been proposed to be applied in these environments and applications, mainly to consider their main inherent properties which are the information that generate and handle, and the content that disseminate. Among the adopted techniques and recently integrated into the IoT is the ICN (Information Centric Networking) paradigm. The choice of integration of ICN in the context of IoT is mainly motivated by all the advantages it represents, in particular content caching and decoupling senders and receivers. In this paper, we provide a detailed analysis of the motivations behind using ICN in IoT environments and a survey of existing research work that have already applied ICN as a communication support for IoT applications.

Information Centric Networking (ICN) is an emerging research topic aiming at shifting the Internet from its current host-centric paradigm towards an approach centred around content, which enables the direct retrieval of information objects in a secure, reliable, scalable, and efficient way. The exposure of ICN to scenarios other than static content distribution is a growing research topic, promising to extend the impact of ICN to a broader scale. In this context, particular attention has been given to the application of ICN in Internet of Things (IoT) environments. The current paper, by focusing on local domain IoT scenarios, such as multi-sensory Machine to Machine environments, discusses the challenges that ICN, particularly Interest-based solutions, impose to service discovery. This work proposes a service discovery mechanism for such scenarios, relying on an alternative forwarding pipeline for supporting its core operations. The proposed mechanism is validated through a proof-of-concept prototype, developed on top of the Named Data Networking ICN architecture, with results showcasing the benefits of our solution for discovering services within a collision domain.

A Lightweight Forwarding Strategy for Named Data Networking in Low-end IoT

IoT (Internet of Things) technically connects billions of entities to the Internet. The IoT is divided between the technology and the service itself. As a result, great efforts are needed to join data from many contexts and services. This reason has motivated proposals to develop solutions that can overcome existing issues of limitations for mobility, security, reliability and scalability of IoT. These billions of devices are interconnected to each other either using unicast, multicast or broadcast communications, and mixture of static and mobile communications. This paper aims to investigate the parameters of mobility performance in handover process for mobile multicast IoT environment. Investigation is done quantitatively by evaluating the parameters of handover process for IoT in two networking protocols that are possible to support acceptable mobility performance for IoT. The protocols are ICN (Information Centric Networking) and Proxy Mobile Internet Protocol. The evaluation parameters include packet loss and service recovery time. The metrics are extracted from the handover process flow for each network protocol topology. The service recovery time parameter is assumed as the time duration for each message to travel from sender to receiver, while packet loss parameter depends on the packet arrival rate and service recovery time. The results show that the ICN performs better than Proxy Mobile Internet Protocol.

In-network caching within the distributed computing is one of the most promising aspects of Information-Centric Networking (ICN) in comparison with traditional centralized server based data retrieval. With ICN, it can ensure that required data is readily available within the intermediate IoT routers, even when the original producer is not reachable. However, in Internet of Things (IoT), where the storage capacity is often severely limited, IoT nodes cannot simply cache any and all the content that will receive to the intermediate caching device(routers). Hence, it is very significant to know which content has to cache and how long the content has to be in the intermediate caching device. Moreover, cache-based routing plays a predominant role in reducing the end-to-end delay with enhanced network throughput by efficiently discovering the shortest-path from the intermediate caching devices in ICN-IoT networks. In this paper, comparison of different cache based routing protocols for ICN-IoT networks is discussed in terms of ICN caching and cache replacement strategies along with the performance metrics suitable for evaluating in an IoT context.

In edge computing, edge nodes are hierarchically arranged, while data transmission is allowed among edge nodes. Because end devices are the closest to raw data sources, they usually submit requests with sensitive information to the edge nodes. Privacy issues occur during the transmission process. In addition, when an end user sends a request to edge nodes, the end user connects to the closest edge node initially, and the request is passed to the upper-layer edge nodes for further processing when the resources of the initial nodes are exhausted. The resource limitation includes computation, storage capabilities, and the number of users. For example, if a user generates one request to the connected edge node exceeding its computation power, the upper-layer edge node will be involved in the operation. Additionally, the information will be transmitted to the other edge nodes, which might be malicious. Thus, privacy preservation is necessary to prevent privacy leakage from data transition among multiple edge nodes in hierarchical structures.

Information Centric Networking (ICN) is a recent networking technology but lots of research papers have already been published on this topic. Those papers includes the technology itself: the protocol, the architecture, the node; or the use-cases showing the benefits of using an ICN-based network: video streaming, Internet of Things, social networks. However, even if promising, ICN will be deployed only if a business model is defined and accepted by the different actors, and if incentives for those stakeholders are good enough. In this paper, we present our current view of how the business model can evolve and which actors will be concerned by the ICN deployment. Then, based on the use-case of a local-aware ICN-based content delivery for social network applications, we describe the potential gains the actors can obtain and thus the incentives the actors can have to go for a deployment of ICN.

India has rolled-out the 5G wireless technology. The Nation’s 5G services official inaugurated by Prime Minister of India on October 1st 2022. The Fifth-generation (5G) technology having extreme capabilities in terms of high bandwidth, low latency, reliability and ability to connect large number of network devices. This communication technology has the potential to enhance efficiencies, address problems, and create new delivery mechanisms across different functions, services and schemes of the Government. The Government is also intend to established the 5G laboratories for quick prototyping of 5G use cases that cater to the requirements of several sectors. This new technology can be used in Water Resource, Agriculture, Environment, Smart Home, Smart Grid, Smart Transportation, Smart Health, Public Safety, Industries and many more. Water is natural and limited available resource therefore management of Water Resources, protection and supervision is very essential. Presently, Improvement in water resource management is an important and relevant issue. Internet of Things (IOT) is rapidly growing and become an easy way to access the physical objects or devices which are connected through internet. IOT can access any devices which have built in sensors, unique address identifier with the ability to collect and transfer the data without any human intervention. Using IOT we can control the devices from anywhere efficiently and safely [1]. The IOT based on 5G technology is an advance technology which could help tremendously for managing the water resources locally as well as remotely. IoT devices paired with 5G will help transfer, monitor and analyze the water resource data. National Water Informatics Center (NWIC) under Ministry of Jal Shakti (Govt. of India) has setup the Working Group Committee for adoption of 5G technology for identifying the possible 5G based use cases (applications) in Water Resource sector. First Author is the member of Working Group Committee for CWPRS [2]. 5G technology is magnificent opportunity for management of water infrastructures. In this paper we are discussing on possible uses of 5G technology and their benefits towards efficient water resource management along with the literature survey.  

As devices for the Internet of Things (IoT) are typically battery-powered, energy efficiency is a major challenge for IoT networks. In this paper, we leverage the in-network caching of Information-Centric Networking (ICN) to propose a novel cooperative caching scheme, based on the IoT data lifetime and user request rate, to improve the energy efficiency of IoT networks. By caching IoT data at different nodes (such as content routers, base stations, etc.), IoT devices can stay in sleep mode for a larger portion of time and therefore reduce the overall energy consumption. With the help of an auto- configuration mechanism, the proposed IoT data Lifetime-based Cooperative Caching (LCC) scheme can dynamically adapt to the change of request rate. Extensive evaluations were performed and the simulation results show that LCC outperforms existing schemes in terms of total energy consumption reduction (up to 40%) and the reduction in the average number of hops traversed along the path (up to 20%), which is also directly related to the response time.
