Abstract

Black cisgender women have disproportionate rates of HIV diagnoses and low rates of PrEP uptake. Using the situated-Information Motivation Behavioral Skills Model of Care Initiation and Maintenance (sIMB-CIM), this study examined the relationships among PrEP knowledge, attitude, perceived HIV risk, demographic factors, and willingness to use PrEP. The study setting was an outpatient acute care medical facility in an underserved community in which Black women were recruited. The sample included 193 cisgender women, the majority of whom were single, had some college education and were employed 40 h. A majority of women (93%) indicated that they were interested in taking PrEP to prevent HIV. In regression analyses, marital status and religion were the only significant predictors of willingness to use PrEP. The study found high willingness to use PrEP and positive attitudes toward PrEP despite limited PrEP knowledge. The findings are favorable to increase PrEP use among Black cisgender women.
