Correlations between learning strategy and the ninth grade students’ reading comprehension in junior high school

Although the evidence in support of the variability of students' learning strategies has expanded in recent years, less is known about the explanatory base of these individual differences in terms of the joint influences of personal and contextual characteristics. Previous studies have often investigated how student learning is associated with either personal or contextual factors. This study takes an integrative research perspective into account and examines the joint effects of personality, academic motivation, and teaching strategies on students' learning strategies in a same educational context in first-year higher education. In this study, 1,126 undergraduate students and 90 lecturers from eight professional bachelor programmes in a university college participated. Self-report measures were used to measure students' personality, academic motivation, and learning strategies. Students' processing and regulation strategies are mapped using the Inventory of Learning Styles. Key characteristics of more content-focused versus learning-focused teaching strategies were measured. Multivariate multi-level analysis was used to take the nested data structure and interrelatedness of learning strategies into account. Different personality traits (openness, conscientiousness, and neuroticism) and academic motivation (amotivation, autonomous, and controlled motivation) were found to be independently associated with student learning strategies. Besides these student characteristics, also teaching strategies were found to be directly associated with learning strategies. The study makes clear that the impact of teaching strategies on learning strategies in first-year higher education cannot be overlooked nor overinterpreted, due to the importance of students' personality and academic motivation which also partly explain why students learn the way they do.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, educational mobile games may play a significant role to facilitate students’ learning. Several studies have indicated that these games using mobile phones may improve students’ learning motivation and effectiveness when they are equipped with appropriate learning strategies. However, investigating the impact of learning strategies in students’ utilization of educational mobile games has received little scholarly attention during the COVID-19 pandemic. Hence, this research proposed two learning games scenarios to fill this gap. In the first scenario, students were offered an educational mobile game with a learning strategy called ‘scaffolding strategy’; while in the second scenario, the same game was offered without the strategy. To achieve this objective, an experimental design with a research model was developed to examine the role of scaffolding learning strategy in students’ use of educational mobile games. In this experimental study, 43 students from two classes participated in the two learning scenarios. The results indicate that educational mobile gaming with the scaffolding learning strategy significantly influenced students’ utilization of the mobile game. In addition, the adoption of the learning strategy significantly affected students’ perceived enjoyment, perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, and behavioural intention to use, compared with the same game without the learning strategy. The results also indicate that the introduction of the scaffolding learning strategy into the educational mobile game will increase students’ learning effectiveness and motivation.

Educational computer games have been widely employed to facilitate students’ learning. Studies have pointed out that these games may improve students’ learning effectiveness when they are equipped with appropriate learning strategies. However, the role of learning strategies in students’ acceptance of educational computer games has received surprisingly little scholarly attention. Hence, this research proposed two learning scenarios to address this question. Students in the first scenario were offered an educational computer game with a learning strategy, while those in the second were offered the same game without the strategy. A quasi-experimental design with a research model was constructed to examine the role of learning strategies in students’ acceptance of the given game. In this study, 65 students participated in the two learning scenarios. Two research findings are presented: (1) the adoption of the learning strategy not only affected students’ acceptance of the game, but also made their perceived ease of use significantly influence their perceived enjoyment, perceived usefulness, and attitude towards using; (2) with or without the learning strategy, perceived enjoyment was the most important factor that affected students’ acceptance of the game, while perceived usefulness, attitude towards using, and perceived control exerted no influence on this issue.

Research supports the effectiveness of using preferred learning styles in the process of language acquisition. It has been shown that successful language learners often tap into relevant styles and strategies effectively in the process of learning a foreign language. Following fads and fashions in this line of research, this paper tries to examine the relationship between ambiguity tolerance and learner's reading comprehension ability. For this purpose 22 Iranian fresh university students were chosen. At first they filled a questionnaire with regard to Ambiguity Tolerance scale. During next sessions their reading comprehension ability was examined. Correlational procedure was used for the purpose of this study. It was generally shown that there is a positive correlation (0.83) between ambiguity tolerance and reading comprehension ability.

Flipped Learning in Foreign Language Learning in Higher Education: Analysis of Effectiveness and Moderator Variables. Many studies have reported that the flipped learning strategies has a significant effect on students' foreign language skills in college compared to traditional learning strategies. However, reports regarding the effectiveness of flipped learning strategies in foreign language learning are very heterogeneous. Objectives: Based on this empirical gap, this study aims to synthesize the application of flipped learning strategies in students' foreign language learning in higher education compared to traditional learning strategies. Method: This study uses the meta-analysis method to answer the objectives of this study. Findings: The results of the analysis of twelve research samples with a random-effect estimation model show that the use of the flipped learning strategies has a more significant effect on students' foreign language skills in college when compared to traditional strategies, with the combined effect size value being in the large effect category (g = 0.89; p < 0.05). In addition, the results of the moderator factor analysis show that the variables of flipped learning class capacity, ability type, and foreign language type significantly affect the effectiveness of the use of the flipped learning strategies to students' diverse foreign language skills. Conclusion: These reports provide strong evidence as recommendations for educators, researchers and educational policy makers regarding the application of flipped learning strategies in foreign language learning in higher education. Regardless of the validity of the results, this study only involved a few research samples. Further research is recommended to combine more samples, or focus on the type of abilities measured, so that it can provide more specific conclusions. In Indonesian language learning In Primary School there are four skills that need to be mastered by the students that is listening skill, writing skill, reading skill, and speaking skill. In reading learning, students often feel bored and unmotivated in learning. Related to the importance of learning read comprehension, necessary methods that can foster motivation and interest of students in reading comprehension activities in school. Learning comprehension reading should be done with appropriate learning methods to achieve optimal learning outcomes. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of Cooperative Script method, in improving reading comprehension in grade V students of SD Negeri 17 Parepare. The type of this research is experimental research using one group pretest posttest design. Variables in this research is Cooperative Script Method as independent variable and skill reading comprehension level as dependent variable. The sample in this study is all students of class V SD Negeri 17 Parepare which amounted to 37 people. Technique of collecting data using comprehension reading comprehension test in the form of objective test 30 item. The validity of the instrument used is the content validity. Reliability test was analyzed by using alpha cronbach coefficient formula. Data analysis technique is done by using t-test technique with respect to normality and homogeneity. The results showed that the mean score of students' reading ability before and after treatment increased from 16.86 to 24.06. The result of t-test analysis shows t-test equal to -24,829 with db = 36, and p value 0.000. The p value is smaller than the significance level of 0.05. In other words, the Cooperative Script method is effectively used in reading comprehension learning.

<p>Reading Chinese is one of the most challenging tasks for learners of Chinese as a foreign language (CFL learners). Studies showed that effective use of strategies (e.g. inferring meaning from context) helps to enhance reading comprehension. However, so far, most studies about reading Chinese as a foreign language have focused on lower-level processing (e.g. word learning strategies, the effects of orthography on word acquisition, etc.). Studies about reading process and strategies of adult CFL learners engaging in independent Chinese text reading are extremely limited, and few studies compare reading strategies and perceptions of successful and less successful CFL readers. This study filled these gaps by investigating adult CFL learners’ reading strategies and comparing strategy use and perceptions of successful CFL readers and less successful ones. Using the Compensatory Model of Second Language Reading (Bernhardt, 2005; 2011) as the theoretical framework, this study answered three research questions with sub questions: 1. What are the reading strategies used by adult CFL learners? (a) What are overall reading strategies used by adult CFL readers? (b) What are effective strategy combinations used by adult CFL readers? 2. How do successful adult CFL readers apply and perceive reading strategies when reading in Chinese? 3. How do less successful adult CFL readers apply and perceive reading strategies when reading in Chinese? Qualitative research methods were used to collect and analyze the data. Twelve college level third-year Chinese learners were asked to read a Chinese text, finish a think-aloud task (verbally express their thought process), recall the content of the text, answer several text-related questions, and engage in semi-structured interviews. This study identified 14 bottom-up strategies and 12 top-down strategies. The effective reading strategy combinations used by CFL readers included 1) inferring word meaning by accessing context cues, character meaning, and mental lexical networks; 2) monitoring comprehension by using context information, rereading, summarizing, noticing text structure, paraphrasing, or translating difficult parts; 3) segmenting Chinese words by checking the dictionary, conducting grammar analysis, and referring to mental lexicons. Through comparing the cases of successful and less successful CFL readers, this study revealed that successful readers were good at using context information, monitoring comprehension, and distinguishing important text segments from less important ones. They showed confidence in applying reading strategies and consciously acquired and practiced using strategies while reading. Less successful readers, on the other hand, had more difficulties in decoding characters and words as well as understanding complicated sentence structures. They did not trust their ability to infer about words and phrases, and relied more on the dictionary and translation. In addition, compared with less successful readers, successful readers used more top-down strategies, and they had better metacognitive competences in applying a wide range of strategies effectively. The findings of this study provide useful pedagogical implications to improve Chinese reading instruction and a better understanding about reading Chinese as well as L2 reading.</p>

Quantitative research has been conducted with a predictor variable of learning strategy and an outcome variable of academic achievement. The cross-sectional survey method was adapted to the 321 random samples of higher secondary students at Thiruvarur District, Tamil Nadu, India. The dimensions of learning strategy such as collaborative studying, writing, notes developing, reading, self-assessment, content organization, and time execution techniques were separately analyzed with the outcome variable, and both learning strategy and academic achievement were analyzed with demographic characteristics such as gender, locality of the school, type of management and medium of instructions. Descriptive, inferential, correlation, and regression analyses were made appropriately against the hypotheses. The study reveals that the level of learning strategy and academic achievement of the higher secondary students lies in the level of high and first class respectively. Learning strategy and academic achievement shows significant difference concerning gender, locality of the school, and medium of instruction. The learning strategy dimensions such as notes developing technique with gender, content organization and time execution techniques with the locality of the school, collaborative studying, reading, and time execution techniques with the medium of instruction are not significant and all others are significant with respective variables. The relationship between learning strategy and academic achievement is very high and academic achievement is highly influenced by the dimension of learning strategy at different levels. However, the collaborative studying dimension highly influences academic achievement followed by notes developing, reading, time execution, self-assessment, writing, and content organization techniques.

The study explores the meaning of learning styles and strategies and attempts to find a relationship between the two in the context of English language learning. The research is conducted in Thailand with 22 grade six students and it examines some of the definitions and characteristics of learning strategies and learning styles as described by scholars in the field of SLA. The results gathered using qualitative and quantitative data, show that that the majority of the students are visual style learners and multi-modal learners. Based on the data collected, there is no concrete relationship between learning style and the use of learning strategies. Even so, the topic leaves many areas open for exploration, in particular, the learner’s metacognitive awareness of learning style and conscious learning strategy use and how this may improve his second language acquisition. The research also sheds a light on the learning strategies used by secondary school students in their L2 classroom as described by data collected through interviews.

The background of this research was based on problems that faced by students in reading class.The use of Reciprocal Method can be used as a teaching method to help teacher in teaching learning, especially in teaching reading comprehension. The study is aimed at responding the following question: 1) How is the implementation of reciprocal method in teaching reading comprehension?, 2)Is reciprocal method effective for students in learning reading comprehension. This research was conducted by using quasi experimental method.The method of the research was quantitative and qualitative. Data were obtained by giving test to the students of second grade (VIII C as experimental Group and VIII E as control group). The instruments that were used to collect data were pre-test and post-test as main instrument and questionnaire as second instrument. The test was used to know students' ability in reading comprehension before and after the teacher implementing Reciprocal Method. Questionnaire was used to know students' perception during teaching learning process. The data for this experimental study were students' reading pre-test post-test scores and students' activites results, and the reading scores were analyzed with Fraenkle and Wallen formula. The result of t is 6,6 t is 1,997 for α = 5%. So the account table conclusion is t is higher than t (t > t ). The research found that the reading account table account table scores of the experimental group is higher than the control group and it is also supported by the students' perception.Furthermore, the students' perception results indicate that there were positive responses towards the use of Reciprocal Method in teaching reading. It was effective both in arousing students' motivation and in improving their reading comprehension. From the results, using Reciprocal Method in teaching reading comprehension was expected to be a new contribution for helping teacher to conduct an effective and interesting learning in the classroom.

The results of this research are expected to help the students to know themselves about their learning habits. Give information to the English teachers about students’ characteristics, especially about learning. So, they can anticipate it.And also to know the students’ ability in reading.This study is quantitative research with correlation research design. The correlation study is a study that involves collecting data in order to determine the degree to which a relationship exists between two or more variables. The result showed that the value of the coefficient correlation between Students’ Habits (X1) and Reading Comprehension (Y) for -0.011. Sig. Value 0.923 was higher than Alpha value 0.05 (0.923 >0,2213).

Background: Based on the control-value theory (CVT), learning strategies and academic emotions are closely related to learning achievement, and have been considered as important factors influencing student's learning satisfaction and learning performance in the online learning context. However, only a few studies have focused on the influence of learning strategies on academic emotions and the interaction of learning strategies with behavioral engagement and social interaction on learning satisfaction.Methods: The participants were 363 pre-service teachers in China, and we used structural equation modeling (SEM) to analyze the mediating and moderating effects of the data.Results: The main findings of the current study showed that learning strategies influence students' online learning satisfaction through academic emotions. The interaction between learning strategies and behavioral engagement was also an important factor influencing online learning satisfaction.Conclusions: We explored the internal mechanism and boundary conditions of how learning strategies influenced learning satisfaction to provide intellectual guarantee and theoretical support for the online teaching design and online learning platform. This study provides theoretical contributions to the CVT and practical value for massive open online courses (MOOCs), flipped classrooms and blended learning in the future.

The article focuses on the study of learning strategies aimed at acquiring professional vocabulary since professional lexical competence is an integral part of professional competence, the linguistic basis of foreign language communicative competence, and higher education institutions make great efforts in professional communication. Growing demands on professional language training of specialists in technical specialties, expansion and strengthening of international contacts, and growth of scientific progress determine the need for proficiency in English for Specific Purposes at a sufficiently high level. These trends make it necessary to search for optimal methods for intensifying teaching professionally oriented terminology and effectively acquiring terminological units. Deepening into the theoretical background of the concepts of "professionally oriented lexis" and "learning strategy", the article highlights the available categorization of learning strategies. Also, it emphasizes scientists’ various approaches to interpreting these concepts. The article clarifies the didactic possibilities of learning strategies and determines possible ways of their implementation in teaching/learning a foreign language in the context of higher education. The article provides an understanding of the learning strategies' impact on the dynamics of acquiring professional vocabulary, emphasizes the importance of following the basic principles of professional lexis teaching, focuses on the teacher’s role not only in instructing but also in forming and developing foreign language learning strategies in students. The article details the ways of implementing cognitive learning strategies in English classes. It gives examples of exercises that can significantly improve learning effectiveness, using cognitive strategies and creating favorable conditions for acquiring specialized vocabulary.

This review study aims to provide an overview of previous research on learning strategies used by students studying in a distance-learning form. The basic sources for research were the Web of Science, Research, Gate and Google Scholar databases. We also proceeded with a subsequent search based on frequent citations, using the Internet search engine Google.In accordance with the aim of this study, we sought answers to the following research questions in the analysis:1. Which learning strategies are most frequently used by students studying in a distance-learning form?2. In connection with which factors influencing distance-learning outcomes are learning strategies examined?3. Which research methods are used to study distance-learning strategies?We came to the following conclusions: In distance learning, it is necessary to help students develop their autonomous learning competence, knowledge of diverse learning strategies and reflective use of learning strategies, and increase the repertoire of reading strategies used by students. For some distance-learning students, however, the use of diverse learning strategies poses an issue; adult distance-learning students use only a fairly limited repertoire of learning strategies. Adult students use only those learning strategies which have worked for them in the past and are therefore convinced of their effectiveness. The most frequently used learning strategies for distance-learning students are retelling the text in their own words, with which students check whether they have understood the text sufficiently, compilation of an overview of information based on the read text, and the use of mnemonics.In connection with the factors influencing distance-learning outcomes, research has shown that there is a relationship between the degree of cognitive development and the use of a broader repertoire of learning strategies. It was found that the effectiveness of learning in self-directed learning and the use of a wider repertoire of learning strategies are closely related to students’ mood, selfconfidence, self-assurance, and perseverance. In this study of learning strategies, quantitative and qualitative research methods are applied. However, mixed method research design is the most commonly used approach.

This research was conducted based on problems found by researcher in the learning process about reading comprehension using the Literature Circles (LC) strategy. It found that learners had problems when understanding the text although the teacher taught by using the Literature Circles strategy. Next, learners had difficulty to make a summary although the Literature Circles strategy was used. Last, in applying the Literature Circles strategy teacher had tried to help learners to comprehend some words that learners did not know from the text, but learners still tend to have difficulty in understanding those words. The purpose of this research was to see the effectiveness of using the Literature Circles strategy in teaching reading comprehension for VIII grade at UPTD SMP N 3 Kec.Guguak. The method used in this research was descriptive quantitative research, which aims to describe the significant effect of using Literature Circles (LC) strategy on reading comprehension learners. The population of this research were all of the learners in VIII grade of UPTD SMP N 3 Kec.Guguak. Then, the instrument used in this research was a reading comprehension test. The finding reveals that the use of Literature Circles strategy is effective to improve reading comprehension at VIII grade of UPTD SMP N 3 Kec. Guguak. It shows that in indicators the identifying the main idea and identifying generic structure in the text get the highest percentage of score (91.6%). Meanwhile, the result percentage of average score in indicator the vocabulary in the context get the lowest percentage of score (57.3%). Even though there is low score in those one reading comprehension’s indicator, but the total percentage of average score from all indicators in reading comprehension learners is 79.5%. According to the table of interpretation of the effectiveness percentage, 79.5% indicated ‘Effective” category. It means in using Literature Circles strategy is effective to improve the learners reading comprehension.
