Current NSF Robotics Developments and Activities Focusing on Robust Intelligence

The fields of computer and information science and engineering (CISE) are central to nearly all of society's needs, opportunities, and challenges. The US National Science Foundation (NSF) was created 70 years ago with a broad mission to promote the progress of science and to catalyze societal and economic benefits. NSF, largely through its CISE directorate which has an annual budget of more than $1B, accounts for over 85% of federally-funded, academic, fundamental computer science research in the US. My talk will give an overview of NSF/CISE research, education, and research infrastructure programs, and relate them to the technical and societal trends and topics that will impact their future trajectory. My talk will highlight opportunity areas for education and workforce development across the computing and information sciences, with a particular emphasis on parallelism and advanced computing and information topics.

Through the CISE Pathways to Revitalized Undergraduate Computing Education (CPATH) program, NSF's Directorate for Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) is challenging its partners - colleges, universities and other stakeholders committed to advancing the field of computing and its impact - to transform undergraduate computing education on a national scale, to meet the challenges and opportunities of a world where computing is essential to U.S. leadership and economic competitiveness across all sectors of society. [4] One approach to such revitalization is the introduction of interdisciplinary courses to expand the scope of computing education. This approach has its roots in programs such as Lynn Stein's small footprint core [2] and Georgia Tech's threads [3]. The basic idea is to have students from various disciplines work together on computing projects to expand their educational horizons and make computing courses more appealing. This panel brings together educators who have developed and taught interdisciplinary courses with these goals in mind. The panelists will share their experiences and solicit new ideas from the audience. We expect a lively discussion on the pros and cons of this approach.

The rapid expansion of big data has transformed research practices across disciplines, yet disparities exist in its adoption among U.S. institutions of higher education. This study examines trends in NSF-funded big data-driven research across research domains, institutional classifications, and directorates. Using a quantitative approach and natural language processing (NLP) techniques, we analyzed NSF awards from 2006 to 2022, focusing on seven NSF research areas: Biological Sciences, Computer and Information Science and Engineering, Engineering, Geosciences, Mathematical and Physical Sciences, Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences, and STEM Education (formally known as Education and Human Resources). Findings indicate a significant increase in big data-related awards over time, with CISE (Computer and Information Science and Engineering) leading in funding. Machine learning and artificial intelligence are dominant themes across all institutions’ classifications. Results show that R1 and non-minority-serving institutions receive the majority of big data-driven research funding, though HBCUs have seen recent growth due to national diversity initiatives. Topic modeling reveals key subdomains such as cybersecurity and bioinformatics benefiting from big data, while areas like Biological Sciences and Social Sciences engage less with these methods. These findings suggest the need for broader support and funding to foster equitable adoption of big data methods across institutions and disciplines.

This panel paper provides a brief overview of the National Science Foundation's research and education activities in the program area of Electric Power and Energy. Examples of successful transfer of research into educational activities are numerous and while this paper cannot claim to provide an exhaustive survey, an attempt will be made to review some of the best practices described by Research and Education investigators.

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to SIGMETRICS 2008. Performance modeling and measurement are critical in the design and development of information technologies, ranging from computer systems to computer networks and the World Wide Web. Over the past decades we have seen an increasing influence of the modeling and measurement work in various disciplines in computer science. As a result, our community has been growing with broader application backgrounds and technical interests. This year's conference program is particularly exciting, with a number of new features. For the first time, the main conference has grown to a program of three full days with 36 papers. Also for the first time, we have a demo competition and a student thesis panel. In addition, there are three keynotes given by illustrious scholars from academia, François Baccelli (member of the French Academy of Sciences); from a funding agency, Jeannette Wing (Assistant Director of the Computer and Information Science and Engineering Directorate of the National Science Foundation); and from industry, Harrick Vin (Vice President of Research and Development at Tata Consultancy Services). Also new this year is a panel on Performance Analysis in the Real World, where all the panelists come from industrial production environments and will provide an industrial perspective of performance modeling and analysis. The conference program is further augmented with stimulating tutorials and workshops. This year, there are nine excellent tutorials on topics ranging from analysis and control techniques to performance engineering methodology and network economics. The MAthematical performance Modeling and Analysis (MAMA) workshop continues its success with its 10th edition in 2008. The Workshop on Hot Topics in METRICS (HotMetrics) will be inaugurated immediately after the main conference, in parallel with the third International Workshop on Feedback Control Implementation and Design in Computing Systems and Networks (FeBID). These tutorials and workshops complement the main conference and significantly enhance SIGMETRICS 2008.

ABSTRACTInformation schools (iSchools) have grown along with heightened understanding of the rapid changes taking place in the information society and in the humanities. This growth has led to the characteristics of multidisciplinarity and the need for ongoing discussion and collaboration in information field (i-Field) research in terms of human behaviors and information technology. To promote collaboration in the context of research and education, it is necessary to understand the current activities of iSchools in relation to their collaboration patterns. This study analyzed the research patterns among iSchools at the macro and micro levels, and combined the analysis resultsFor the analysis,, 41 iSchools were identified from the iSchool directory. Co-authorship and an institution-profiling network were extracted from conference papers and posters presented at the iConference 2008-2013 to mine scholarly communication patterns. Social networks (friendship networks) among them were also extracted from Twitter by collecting their common followees to identify their interest in current public issues. The network analysis was performed at the micro and macro levels.In the micro-level analysis, the structures of social networking and scholarly communication among 41 iSchools were constructed and compared statistically by executing quadratic assignment procedure (QAP) correlation. The QAP correlation analysis determines whether a relationship exists between two particular nodes in two networks at the same time. At the macro level, comparison between the top interest in social networking and that of scholarly communication was performed by revealing top co-word networks. Additionally, co-authorship patterns and institution profiling patterns among 196 institutions, including the 41 iSchools identified in scholarly communication, were compared statistically to identify similarities and differences in communication patterns of iSchools compared to non-iSchools.The analysis provided evidence of the current prominent collaborating bodies and their neighbors as proactive actors accelerating scholarly communication and social networking. The social networking pattern and institution-profiling pattern were significantly related at the micro level, and the co-authorship pattern was significantly related to the institution-profiling pattern at macro-level. Additionally, iSchools that actively elaborate social networking and scholarly communication at the micro or macro levels were identified and compared to determine whether iSchools that could bridge other iSchools and non-iSchools in both social networking and research. The significant interest in social networking revealed in this study was related to IT trends and higher education while the research interest in the iField was related to linking information science to society, technology, and culture.Keywords: Social network analysis, Bibliometrics, Twitter, Social networking, iSchool, iConference1. Research budgets of several of the federal government agencies were increased significantly over the Reagan administration's requests in the House of Representative's appropriations bill H.R. 4034. These budgets had been removed from the Reagan administration's omnibus reconciliation bill, and thus there were worries expressed that certain research funding could be in jeopardy. The rationale was that because the requests were voted on individually on the floor of the House, many sections of the budgets would be subjected to extra scrutiny, which would lead to more cuts.The National Science Foundation (NSF) budget request had been cut and reordered by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) by making sharp reductions in programs of the social sciences and in programs of science and engineering education. There were fears that these programs would be reinstated to the original request level, at the expense of the budgets of other research activities. These fears materialized, but only momentarily. Efforts to cut the research activities by the House Appropriations Committee were soundly defeated. The budget was supported, with additional increases to provide for the education programs, by a high margin, which included most Republican and Democratic members of the House of Representatives. The overall NSF budget, as passed, has a total appropriation of $1103.5 million, compared with the Administration's request of $1033.5 million (the Fiscal Year 1981 appropriation for the NSF was $1022.4 million). The House approved budget included increases of $44.9 million in research and $25.1 million in science and engineering education. Included in the research budget increase were recommendations by the House Appropriations Committee for support of the social sciences and for the international affairs programs. Also included in the recommendations was support of interdisciplinary research programs that cut across the directorates of the NSF.

Trusted ILLIAC is a reliable and secure computing platform being built at the University of Illinois Coordinated Science Laboratory (CSL) and Information Trust Institute (ITI), involving faculty from Electrical and Computer Engineering and Computer Science Departments. The end goal is a large, demonstrably trustworthy enterprise-class computing system to support, what is variously referred to as on-demand/utility computing or adaptive enterprise-computing Such systems require that a significant number of applications co-exist and share hardware/software resources using a variety of containment boundaries. Current solutions aim at providing hardware and software solutions that can only be described as one-size-fits-all approaches. Today's cyber-infrastructures are complex, expensive to implement, and nearly impossible to validate The challenge is to provide an application-specific level of reliability and security in a totally transparent manner, while delivering optimal performance. A promising approach lies in developing a new set of methods that provide customized levels of trust (specified by the application) enforced in hardware, using an integrated approach involving reprogrammable hardware, enhanced compiler methods to extract security and reliability properties;. Our approach is to demonstrate such a set of integrated techniques that span entire system hierarchy: processor hardware, operating system, and application. This talk will describe the current status, the prototype hardware and software and on-going plans.
