With the recent developments in energy sector, the pricing of electricity is now governed by the spot market where a variety of market mechanisms are effective. After the new legislation of market liberalization in Turkey, competition-based on hourly price has received a growing interest in the energy market, which necessitated generators and electric utility companies to add new dimensions to their scope of operation: short-term load and price forecasting. The field has several opportunities though not free from challenges. The dynamic behavior of the market price has caused the electric load to become variable and non-stationary. Furthermore, the number of nodes, in which the load must be predicted, is not constant anymore and can no longer be estimated by experts alone. In this competitive scenario, statistical forecasting methods that can automatically and accurately process thousands of data samples are essential. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the importance of short-term load forecasting, how it has received a growing interest in Turkey and to propose an artificial neural network that can forecast the short term electricity load. Through detailed performance evaluations, we demonstrate that our forecasting method is capable of predicting the hourly load accurately.

In this paper, we introduced a new enhanced technique, to resolve the issue of electricity price and load forecasting. In Smart Grids (SGs) Price and load forecasting is the major issue. Framework of enhanced technique comprises of classification and feature engineering. Feature engineering comprises of feature selection and feature extraction. Decision Tree Regression (DTR) is used for feature selection. Recursive Feature Elimination (RFE) is used for feature selection which eliminates the redundancy of features. The second step of feature engineering, feature extraction, is done using Singular Value Decomposition (SVD), which reduces the dimensionality of features. Last step is to predict the load and forecast. For forecasting electricity load and price, two existing techniques, K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN) and Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP), and a newly proposed technique known as Enhanced KNN (EKNN) is being used. The proposed technique outperforms than MLP and KNN in terms of accuracy. KNN is working on nonparametric method which is used for classification and regression.

Short-term electricity load and price forecasting by a new optimal LSTM-NN based prediction algorithm

An accurate electrical Short-term Load Forecasting (STLF) is an eminent factor in the power generation, electrical load dispatching and energy planning for the power supply companies, specifically in developing countries. This paper proposes a novel temporal feature selection-based Long Short-term Memory (LSTM) model developed by the combination of standard Artificial Neural Network (ANN) layer and LSTM for electrical short term load forecasting. The LSTM model has excellent capability of predicting the stochastic nature of an hour ahead electrical loads. The standard ANN layer consisting 11 neurons is used as an input to LSTM cells. Such a combination of ANN layer with LSTM was never proposed before. The proposed model accommodates variations in weather as well as temporal inputs like humidity, holidays, and date-time features in the hourly load data of the power supply company situated in Johor, Malaysia. This paper gives the insights of hyper parameter tuning to capture the more generalized electrical load patterns in the dataset without compromising the time complexity of the proposed model. The proposed approach was compared with five existing approaches, namely: ANN, LSTM model 1, LSTM model 2, LSTM model 3 and Convolutional Neural Network-LSTM (CNN-LSTM) using hourly load dataset of Johor. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach outperformed the existing approaches in terms of root mean square error, mean absolute percentage error and Diebold-Mariano statistical inference test within 95% confidence interval.

Smart grid (SG) is bringing revolutionary changes in the electric power system. SG is supposed to provide economic, social, and environmental benefits for many stakeholders. A smart meter is an essential part of the SG. Data acquisition, transmission, processing, and interpretation are factors to determine the success of smart meters due to the excess amount of data in the grid. Electricity price and load are considered the most influential factors in the energy management system. Moreover, electricity price and load forecasting performed through data analytics give future trends and patterns of consumption. The energy market trade is based on price forecasting. Accurate forecasting of electricity price and load improves the reliability and management of electricity market operations. The aim of this paper is to explore the state of the art proposed for price and load forecasting in terms of their performance for reliable and efficient smart energy management systems.

Short-term electrical load forecasting plays an important role in the safety, stability, and sustainability of the power production and scheduling process. An accurate prediction of power load can provide a reliable decision for power system management. To solve the limitation of the existing load forecasting methods in dealing with time-series data, causing the poor stability and non-ideal forecasting accuracy, this paper proposed an attention-based encoder-decoder network with Bayesian optimization to do the accurate short-term power load forecasting. Proposed model is based on an encoder-decoder architecture with a gated recurrent units (GRU) recurrent neural network with high robustness on time-series data modeling. The temporal attention layer focuses on the key features of input data that play a vital role in promoting the prediction accuracy for load forecasting. Finally, the Bayesian optimization method is used to confirm the model’s hyperparameters to achieve optimal predictions. The verification experiments of 24 h load forecasting with real power load data from American Electric Power (AEP) show that the proposed model outperforms other models in terms of prediction accuracy and algorithm stability, providing an effective approach for migrating time-serial power load prediction by deep-learning technology.

Short-term load forecasting is an essential instrument in power system planning, operation, and control. Many operating decisions are based on load forecasts, such as dispatch scheduling of generating capacity, reliability analysis, and maintenance planning for the generators. This paper discusses significant role of artificial intelligence (AI) in short-term load forecasting (STLF), that is, the day-ahead hourly forecast of the power system load. A new artificial neural network (ANN) has been designed to compute the forecasted load. The data used in the modeling of ANN are hourly historical data of the temperature and electricity load. The ANN model is trained on hourly data from Ontario Electricity Market from 2007 to 2011 and tested on out-of-sample data from 2012. Simulation results obtained have shown that day-ahead hourly forecasts of load using proposed ANN is very accurate with very less error. However load forecast considering the effect of temperature is better than without taking it as input parameter.

Short-term load forecasting plays a vital role for the power system’s safe operation and production arrangements. This paper regards electric load forecasting as a nonlinear time series prediction problem, and establishes the electric load autoregressive prediction model (ARX Model) based on historical load data, approaching ARX model parameters with RBF neural network, estimating model parameters with using a Structured Nonlinear Parameters Optimization Method (SNPOM), proposing cycle prediction method for short-term electric load forecasting. Experimental results show that the method has higher prediction accuracy for short-term electric load forecasting. Short-term load forecasting is viewed as one promising technology for demand prediction under the most critical inputs for the promising arrangement of power plant units. Thus, it is imperative to present new incentive methods to motivate such power system operations for electricity management. This paper proposes an approach for short-term electric load forecasting using long short-term memory networks and an improved sine cosine algorithm called MetaREC. First, using long short-term memory networks for a special kind of recurrent neural network, the dispatching commands have the characteristics of storing and transmitting both long-term and short-term memories. Next, four important parameters are determined using the sine cosine algorithm base on a logistic chaos operator and multilevel modulation factor to overcome the inaccuracy of long short-term memory networks prediction, in terms of the manual selection of parameter values. Moreover, the performance of the MetaREC method outperforms others with regard to convergence accuracy and convergence speed on a variety of test functions. Finally, our analysis is extended to the scenario of the MetaREC_long short-term memory with back propagation neural network, long short-term memory networks with default parameters, long short-term memory networks with the conventional sine-cosine algorithm, and long short-term memory networks with whale optimization for power load forecasting on a real electric load dataset. Simulation results demonstrate that the multiple forecasts with MetaREC_long short-term memory can effectively incentivize the high accuracy and stability for short-term power load forecasting.

Application of hybrid computational intelligence models in short-term bus load forecasting

With the development of our countrypsilas electricity market, power system load forecasting, especially short-term load forecasting (STLF), has been get more and more important function in the reliable, security, and economical operation of power system. The paper has introduced the principle of artificial neural networks and how we can use it to forecast electric power load. In this paper, a three-layer feed-forward back-propagation (BP) network is applied for short-term load forecasting. In order to improve the accuracy of short-term load forecasting, the data were detached into three groups: workday data, weekend data and festival data which were used to be trained for grouping forecasting models. The proposed networks are trained with 2-year (2002-2003) actual data of Nanchang city and are tested for target years (2004) including workday model, weekend model and festival model. Very reasonable results have been obtained for sample data.

New era has begun two decades ago in the most power sectors of the globe. As electricity itself shifted from being a commodity only to a competitive trading market instrument, forecasting of power load and prices started to be another important factor. With the introduction of liberal power markets, independent players like producers, operators, traders became an important factors of liberalized power markets. New era in this secotr also increased competition among companies and countries. Thus, as new players came into scene, electricity became to be a tradable product and similar to another commodities needs to account, forecast plan of electiricity brought new challenges. With its obstacles, new atmosphere of electiricity repormation brought benefits such as lower price to end users and more utilized energy systems among the countries. Different forecasting models have been developed in order to forsee future operations. Moreover, popular modelts from economics, such as game theories, cournot model, Bertrand model, nash equilibrium plays a big role in electricity price forecasting. Simulation modelts are another methods heavily used by producers, operators and power traders in market. Additionally, statistical models, such as moving averages, Root Mean Square Error, Mean Absolute Error, mean Absolute Percentage Error, Theil's inequality coefficient are frequesntly used to determine price movements of electiricity. As its broadly used in several different industries, Time Series models using historical information and adding updated information helps to model future movement of prices. This article discusses the several methods of price forecasting of electricity in liberal power markets as high volatility of the market raises a big risk for all participants. Forecasting models explains time series analysis and briefly discusses about autoregressive, moving average, autoregressive moving average, and seasonal autoregressive moving average models. Moreover, the article illustrates examples from electricity price and load forecasts and their comparisons with actual results from trades in Turkish electricity market.

Short-term electricity demand or load forecasting is the way of estimating future demand for short time horizon, an hour to one week ahead. Short horizon forecasting helps to maintain secure power system, avoids blackout risk and provides adequate electricity supply. Therefore, accurate forecasting is prime concern for day to day planing and ensuring the stability of electricity system. Many literature show their mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) for short term load forecasting as less than 2%, which is very competitive performance. The methodology behind good performance is that the model should address the driving factors that effect electricity load and employs appropriate estimation techniques. In our work, multiple linear regression model are developed and Bayesian estimation technique is used. Assuming historical load, temperature, daily, and weekly seasonal patterns as the main effecting factors for electricity load consumption, two models Model A, and Model B are constructed. Model A consist historical load and deterministic terms. However, model B consist all variables of Model A plus temperature variables. These models are analyzed based on their forecasting performance for three years out of sample prediction. Our results showed that when temperature variable is included in model, it can improve the overall performance at least by 20%. Performance improvement was higher during morning and evening hours than day hours. Interestingly, evening hours (17 to 22) are statistically not significant.

In electrical engineering load forecasting have been tried out using traditional forecasting models and artificial intelligence techniques and have become one of the major research fields. An accurate and efficient Short-term load forecasting (STLF) plays a vital role for economic operational planning of both regulated power systems and electricity markets. To develop a solution/methodology to demand forecast (Hourly load forecast) and by incorporating weather conditions. However, STLF it is pertinent to understand conventional methods. Therefore, popular conventional methods were implemented to learn methods for STLF. This paper presents Simple Moving Average, Weighted Moving Average, Exponential Moving Average, Auto Regressive and Multiple linear regressions for short term load forecasting. Conventional technique approach is implemented on historical load data for forecasting the load. PGVCL hourly load data used for training and testing is collected from ALDC, Jetpur, Gujarat. Hence hereby in this paper I have compared five conventional methods for STLF and have come out with a result that forecasting errors of time series models gives reasonably accurate hour ahead load forecast.
