Design and Implementation of a Native Socket Interface for the Bundle Protocol

Unlike physical systems consisting of hardware, virtual machines are conceptual computers in logical configurations made of software. Although programs implemented in virtual machine environments have platform-independent characteristics, their performance is low in terms of implementation speed and they cannot implement those parts that are dependent on the platform by themselves. In addition, they have the shortcoming of being unable to reuse those libraries and programs that are written in the native language. In the present paper, a study for provision of native interfaces of smart virtual machines (SVMs) is introduced. The native interfaces of existing systems were analyzed to define a native interface protocol for SVMs, an interface definition language and an interface generator were designed for effective use of the defined native interface protocol, and the operation of the implemented native interface was verified through experiments. The native interface proposed in the present paper consists of items and rules necessary for information transmission between virtual machine environments and native environments, interface definition files necessary to deliver information on native functions to virtual machines, and functions and data types necessary for native environment to receive information from virtual machine environments. Through such native interfaces, virtual machine environment developers can use environment-dependent function without modifying virtual machine environments.

Knowledge-based support for user adapted interaction design

The paper describes experiences gained during the design and implementation of the VirGIS interface for spatio-temporal applications using grid data. The interface is designed to offer a high degree of interoperability. There are two implementations of the interface. This paper primarily considers the one that is based on the Object-Oriented Geo-Data Model OOGDM.

: This thesis extends the Graphical User Interface of a prototype multi-relational database front-end system, called Amadeus. System enhancements are realized through the application of Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) and Human-Computer Interface (HCI) design principles. Knowledge gained from each topic has been incorporated into the design and implementation of a Form-based interface for database data entry and display. The focus of this thesis is divided between two issues: the development of a set of tools for creating and using Form objects; and the design of the Form object itself. Form creation is accomplished using an application program called the Interface Editor module. The Interface Editor is one of six modules which, together, comprise the Amadeus system. Form manipulation occurs in a second application which implements basic program methods for controlling Data entry and display processes. Design and implementation of this thesis was accomplished using the Prograph programming language and development environment, which provided a basic set of system classes essential to the implementation of the Form object and Graphical User Interfaces.... The successful design of user interfaces of the synchronous eLearning systems depends on HD display and efficient switching of many windows. A new improved design is made by our team. With the consideration of the specific requirement of teaching and learning process, as well as the concept of user centered design, we combine all of the functionalities in a simple and organic manner to ensure the simplicity of the interface. We divide the functionalities into front channel and back channel categories. Based on the partition, a simple interface integrates them organically by using quick buttons in the front channel window for easy and rapid control on the showing or hiding of the back channel windows, thus ensure the operating efficiency, New messages arisen in the back channel windows will be displayed in the front channel windows by making the corresponding quick buttons twinkle and highlighted, thus ensure the effectiveness of the interface. User study has shown that this interface has a good user experience and usability.

This paper proposes a method for user interface development where a model for analysis (Just-UI) and a model for design (DiaMODL) are conveniently combined into an integrated method. Just-UI currently supports automatically refining analysis models, through conceptual patterns to concrete user interface designs. Integrating a dialog modelling language (DiaMODL) into the method, will let the designers take part in the refinement process, hence gaining control and allowing a greater variety of designs. The method encourages the use of code generation for rapid prototyping of the UI. The ultimate objective is to provide a suitable software engineering and user interface design method with coverage to cross through requirements to final implementation of core application code and user interface.

The process of processing the Active Sea Service Certificate at the Harbormaster and Port Authority (KSOP) of Tanjung Emas is still done manually, making it vulnerable to illegal levies and reliant on paper documents. Therefore, an application is needed to expedite services, enhance efficiency, and minimize the occurrence of illegal levies. This research aims to elucidate the steps for designing a SIMALA application at KSOP Tanjung Emas and to assess its effectiveness. This research employs the Research and Development method, incorporating Planning, Production, and Evaluation (PPE) steps. The effectiveness of the SIMALA application at KSOP Tanjung Emas is gauged using the N-gain value. The process of creating a SIMALA application design at KSOP Tanjung Emas begins with planning, which encompasses preparing tools and materials, conceptualizing the SIMALA application system model, designing the database, structuring database tables, and interface design. The subsequent step is production, involving program and interface implementation. The final step is evaluation, which includes black box testing, phase I improvements, phase II testing, and phase II improvements. The effectiveness of the SIMALA application at KSOP Tanjung Emas falls within the high category, as evidenced by the N-gain value of 0.764.

In this paper, we propose an interactive motion control interface with hand manipulation. Using fingers and hands, the user can simultaneously control a large number of degrees of freedom. Our interface is inspired by the control mechanism of a real puppet, which is suspended by about 10 strings attached to different parts of the puppet's body and the controller. The puppeteer can move the puppet in a variety of ways by holding and moving the controller with the right hand and manipulating the strings with the left hand. Our interface was designed based on this puppet mechanism. The character's pelvis translation and head/body rotation are controlled by the user's right hand, while the character's legs are controlled by the right hand fingers. The character's arms are controlled by the user's left hand and fingers. We have developed a method to control a character's motion based on this interface design. In this research, we used a depth-camera-based hand motion sensing device to implement our prototype. Using such a camera-based device obviates the need for the user to wear any device. However, the chosen technology has some limitations in hand motion sensing. Our method has been designed to work well even under these constraints. In this paper, we present our interface design and implementation, as well as the experimental results and a discussion thereof.

Propagating experience-based accessibility guidelines to user interface development

In this paper we present a design of a friendly user interface for the elderly with Parkinson's disease (PD) by using an open source system platform in smartphones. This design provides an interactive interface, a large font, a big button, an intuitive graphical interface, an important feature enhancement and some simplified functions, and it is suitable for the elderly with PD. This design also includes an improved main menu, a selective reply message together with a voice button function, a scrollable full-screen graphical buttons function, a medication calendar with both a list of return appointments and medication reminders of daily living, an easy to operate Web browser and a search engine.

In this paper, we mainly explore how to design and implement the user interfaces of Electricity Operation Information System based on Android. The paper extends its process as the following four aspects---requirements analysis, UI design, interaction design and programmatic implementation. In response to user actions fluidly and friendly, we add modules to handle exceptions. In the end, we give a briefly test on the system UI to ensure it run smoothly and make less mistakes. There are limited studies focusing on the flow design of UI combined with programmatic implementation. The UI design and implementation methodology has good reference at the early stage of developing an application, especially on Android platforms.

Extended learning support systems for all-age education requires inclusive user interface design, especially for elderly users. A dual-tablet user interface with simplified visual layers and more intuitive operations was proposed aiming to reduce the physical and mental loads of elderly learners. An initial prototype with basic functions of viewing learning material was developed based on a cross-platform framework. Two preliminary user experiments participated by elderly volunteers were carried out for formative evaluations, in order to improve the usability of the interface design iteratively. The prototype was modified based on the participants' comments and observation of their operations during the experiments. Additional findings of the elderly users' preference and tendency were discussed for further development.

Drones are becoming more popular within military applications and civil aviation by hobbyists and business. Achieving a natural Human-Drone Interaction (HDI) would enable unskilled drone pilots to take part in the flying of these devices and more generally easy the use of drones. The research within this paper focuses on the design and development of a Natural User Interface (NUI) allowing a user to pilot a drone with body gestures. A Microsoft Kinect was used to capture the user’s body information which was processed by a motion recognition algorithm and converted into commands for the drone. The implementation of a Graphical User Interface (GUI) gives feedback to the user. Visual feedback from the drone’s onboard camera is provided on a screen and an interactive menu controlled by body gestures and allowing the choice of functionalities such as photo and video capture or take-off and landing has been implemented. This research resulted in an efficient and functional system, more instinctive, natural, immersive and fun than piloting using a physical controller, including innovative aspects such as the implementation of additional functionalities to the drone's piloting and control of the flight speed.

Background/Objectives: This preliminary study presents the process and outputs from a paper prototyping activity aimed at understanding deformation-based gestures amongst children aged 5-6 years old. Methods/Statistical Analysis: This is done by observing them interacting with an artificial deformable object i.e. paper. As a result, we obtained childdefined deformable-gestures that will help with the design and implementation of Organic User Interfaces (OUI) in the future, without considering the current technical level and challenges. A flexible or deformable interface is a type of OUI where when flexible displays are deployed; shape deformation like bending is a key form of input. Findings: Upon completing this preliminary study, it is found that children are very much influenced by existing methods like swiping on the screen, pressing on physical buttons and others as compared to using gestures. The results show that the most common gestures are bending upwards and downwards and unfolding. However, there is difference in preference on using paper in real life in portrait format as in this paper it is found that all the children have held their “device” in landscape format. Although the definition and contribution of deformable display is still in its infancy, the use in this study of children of a preschool age has shown that even at an early stage in their development the children’s actions were intuitive. Application/ Improvements: To use a more interactive interface and to include more variables to provide a better of the use of the displays in the future. Lastly is to include a larger sample size.

User interfaces play an increasingly important role in robot applications. This paper presents the design and implementation of a multi-modal user interface for a mobile manipulator, consisting of an autonomous vehicle with a manipulator on it. It is capable of navigating in a real world and doing useful manipulations. The system is intended to provide services for handicapped people. The user interface is crucial for such a user to benefit from the services. The user interface designed for the system makes advantage of multimedia technology and combines graphics, speech and visualization into a coherent multi-modal interface. It serves as a user command interpreter, robot monitor and simulator. A user-centered design approach is adopted for enhanced understandability and usability.
