An integrated and systematic approach for the development of telematic services in heterogeneous distributed platforms

Fierce competition and more demanding needs for customer oriented services have been instigated service organizations to apply new approaches for service design and delivery. Private banking systems are one of the most important parts of service organizations. The efforts in grasping more financial resources by private banks versus governmental banks as well as growth in customers' needs for effective services have enforced private banking managers for using new service design and development process in Iranian private bank systems. New Service design and Development (NSD) process providing the lower cost and higher benefit methods for creation of competitive advantage in global banking systems. In this paper the effective determinants in new service development process of Iranian private Banks has been identified. The qualitative data was collected through interviews. The methodology is adapted from in-depth interviews with academic experts and managers of private banking systems until theoretical saturation state achieved. The gathered data was analyzed using axial and open coding methods. The results shows that the NSD process Iranian private banking systems is consist of four main stages and 28 axial factors and 52 secondary factors. The main factors are includes of analysis& new concept development, design, pilot and launch, development stages. Eventually, the results of this paper can be used for the new services development process in the private banking systems of a competitive environment at the other countries.

The design of Interactive TV services is in an experimental phase. The design of these services needs a more structured approach that enables the actors involved to cooperate and develop a successful service. Based on a Service System design approach we used a framework to analyze an I-TV banking service. The case study shows the barriers to adoption in the current design approach. To deal with these barriers we propose to focus on adoption in the design approach for I-TV banking services.

Evaluation method for user requirements documents

A more complete involvement of the technical editor in the development process for a computer product is proposed in connection with the concept of layers of editing, i.e. literary, semantic, perennial, and integrated. It is noted that a technical editor whose skills include the integrated layer can review the entire information interface-the key tops, the panels, the manuals, and the marketing materials. In addition it is noted that integrating the editor into the entire development process requires coordination. The editor should coordinate review activities with other groups in order to promote efficiency and to ensure usability beyond the scope of editorial review.< <ETX xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">&gt;</ETX>

Insurance companies are in the midst of massive disruptive change occurring as a result of new consumption models and technologies. Companies unable to keep up with the rapid pace of change run the risk of disappearing. Service Design has become an essential practice for firms competing in experience-centred sectors. However, Service Design is not only limited to improving customer experience: it has also been proposed as an enabler for strategic and organisational change. This paper presents a case study in which Service Design was applied to foster transformative strategy and processes in an insurance company. The experiment has shown that Service Design can help companies to identify new business opportunities, as well as assisting organisational transformations. The findings in this paper show that by adopting Design-led approaches, firms can achieve faster and more flexible New Service Development processes able to significantly reduce time to market.

In light of product companies shifting towards services and service companies embracing service design approaches, there is a greater need for the proliferation of service design. However, organizations are still not fully ready for this shift. Notably, Information Technology (IT) service organizations provide a unique premise, where employees engage and facilitate their customers to undergo the journey of adopting service design into their service innovation processes, while they themselves are similarly undergoing the same journey. Amidst the different change management theories available, to help their employees learn, design and deliver better customer services, organizations are exploring and adopting different approaches to introduce service design. We explored an inside-out approach where we wanted the employees of IT organizations to understand, develop and experience the power of a service design-led innovation activity, understand the different complexities involved, and further become empowered to design service experiences for their customer organizations. Using iterative ‘Plan-Act-Observe-Reflect-Refine’ cycles, we explored several internal employee-centric services such as employee hiring, onboarding and integration services. We adopted the CraftChange behaviour change progression model to enable the proliferation of service design techniques and processes, by using the ‘internalizing through experiencing’ approach. Once the employees experienced the benefits of service design within their organization, they were ready to proliferate service design, in their respective customer organizations. In this paper, we share our reflections on the ‘inside-out’ service design proliferation journey within the large multi-cultural and global IT organization in which we work. We argue that our approach can aid highly pluralistic, varied-domain or cross-geography complex services to plan their service design proliferation strategies and activities effectively.

Short development life cycles, the importance of time-to-market and fast changes in technology influence the requirements engineering process. Requirements are exposed to changes during the entire development life cycle, and decisions related to requirements and system design are moving toward developers. For this reason it is important to keep requirement changes under control during the entire development process. This control can be achieved by utilizing Configuration Management (CM) functions and in particular Change Management. This paper describes a model for managing requirements using CM functions. A requirements specification is defined as an hierarchic structure, in which elements of the structure are isolated requirements designated Requirements Specification Items. Having items under version control it is possible to get a better overview of the requirements change process. In the implementation phase, requirement items are associated with Change Requests which define implementations to be introduced in the system. When using Change Requests as links between requirements and the implemented functions we achieve a greater awareness of requirements and a better overview over the requirement process. Furthermore it provides a foundation for reuse of requirements when new systems are built.

There is a growing interest in applying the Service Design (SD) approach to innovate and transform healthcare systems. However, comprehensive studies are scarce. This study systematically reviews the literature on SD initiatives towards healthcare system transformation. The research questions are: How has the SD approach been applied to the healthcare sector? To what extent are the SD initiatives contributing to transform the health systems? What are the main challenges faced by SD initiatives to transform the health system? Which are the main stakeholders involved in the process, and how could they change according to the type of initiative? The search was conducted in March 2021 in eight databases and returned 990 articles evaluated through a research protocol, resulting in 47 studies included in this review. These studies were explored through thematic analysis and considering two conceptual models: the SD approach (Patrício et al., 2020) and the ecosystem perspective (Beirão et al., 2017). The findings show that SD initiatives have been implemented at all levels of the ecosystem, but only 49% (47/23 studies) present a transformative character. The SD initiatives challenges were organized into four themes: (1) Planning SD initiatives as a lever in transforming health systems; (2) Using SD tools creatively; (3) Considering the use of new technologies to transform health systems positively, and (4) Facing the challenges of applying the Experience-Based Design and Experience Based in Co-Design approaches in project development. This study is relevant for helping managers and researchers in their efforts to design truly transformative services with a focus on improving health systems and social wellbeing.

This chapter represents a step towards the establishment of a new system development approach, called Cooperative Experimental System Development (CESD). CESD seeks to overcome a number of limitations in existing approaches: specification oriented methods usually assume that system design can be based solely on observation and detached reflection; prototyping methods often have a narrow focus on the technical construction of various kinds of prototypes; Participatory Design techniques—including the Scandinavian Cooperative Design (CD) approaches—seldom go beyond the early analysis/design activities of development projects. In contrast, the CESD approach is characterized by its focus on: active user involvement throughout the entire development process; prototyping experiments closely coupled to work-situations and use-scenarios; transforming results from early cooperative analysis/design to targeted object oriented design, specification, and realisation; and design for tailorability. The emerging CESD approach is based on several years of experience in applying cooperative analysis and design techniques in projects developing general, tailorable software products. The CESD approach is, however, not limited to this development context, it may be applied for in-house or contract development as well. In system development, particularly in cooperative and experimental system development, we argue that it is necessary to analytically separate the abstract concerns, e.g. analysis, design, and realisation from concrete activities and techniques. Thus we introduce a CESD model which provides a framework for handling this separation and at the same time makes it possible to identify and discuss the rich variety of relationships among concrete activities and the main concerns.

Rapid technological developments are taking place in computing and telecommunications that provide a wide range of opportunities for the delivery of new advanced multimedia services (telematic services). In this context information networking has a central role, and telecommunications service engineering emerges as an important new scientific discipline. This article examines important issues that underpin the creation of telematic services in a highly competitive environment of service provisioning. The starting point is the proposal of a telecommunications service engineering framework consisting of a service development methodology, a service creation environment, and a service support environment, that considers telematic services as distributed object-oriented applications operating on distributed object platforms. Then the article focuses on the presentation and examination of a complete methodology for the development of telematic services, that "covers" in a systematic and structured manner the entire service creation process. Finally, the proposed methodology is validated by applying it to the design and development of a complex representative telematic service.

The article explores the territory of Service design for social innovation. More specifically, it discusses Service Design as a design approach that may facilitate social change, when it creates conditions (enabling systems) that promote social innovation. The theme of aging exemplifies a social issue that can be addressed through the design for services towards active aging. As methodology, this study is based on a literature review of key definitions in Service design for social innovation and active aging, as well as on a case study divided in two parts: a design exploration with undergraduate students under the proposed approach and a description of an actual service model that validates it. As results, the article provides evidences of a social approach to Service Design, based on the creation of socially innovative services towards active aging, designed to rely on older people as active protagonists of their own well-being provision.

Digital Transformation (DT) requires governments to swiftly adapt to meet society’s growing demands. In Brazil, the Startup Gov.BR program aims to speed up DT through the deployment of temporary multidisciplinary teams. This paper introduces a Service Design (SD) approach derived from experiences in supporting this governmental program, leveraging collaborative methodologies like co-design and co-creation to facilitate the redesign and creation of digital services. This work highlights the facilitators and hinderers of adopting the proposed SD approach. The findings underscore the critical role of SD adoption in aligning with citizen needs, thereby improving public services and promoting DT that delivers public value for stakeholders.

Growing vehicle variant diversity, legal requirements to reduce fleet CO2 emissions and innovations in the area of drive train technologies, coupled with the increasing pressure to cut costs, pose new challenges for parties in the automotive sector. An implementation of optimized development and production processes supports the effective handling of these challenges. One important aspect includes engineering efficiency improvement by optimizing the entire automotive bodywork development process and the involved data management. Research activities focus on the data exchange processes between design, simulation and production engineering within various CAx environments. This concerns constantly changing boundary conditions and requirements in the area of automotive body development, including but not limited to the introduction of new materials and material combinations and new types of joining technologies. From the viewpoint of an automotive engineering supplier, additional challenges caused by different customer-related development environments have to be considered. To overcome these challenges, various data exchange strategies between OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturer), automotive suppliers and the use of different data management tools need to be investigated. In this context, the paper presents an approach of an optimized data exchange process of CAD-based data between different CAD (Computer-Aided Design) and CAM (Computer-Aided Manufacturing) environments that supports the entire body development, including data provision for manufacturing engineering. In addition, an optimization of data exchange processes saves development costs and improves the product quality.
