Abstract

The integration of distributed generation (DG) systems to smart grids is a significant issue to achieve a reliable and stable grid operation. Many countries have established some electrical criteria and quality standards defined as grid-codes taking into consideration these electrical requirements. This chapter presents signal processing (SP)-based and artificial intelligence (AI)-based power quality disturbances (PQDs) detection and classification methods used in smart grids. In the first section, SP-based PQDs detection methods used in smart grids are classified, and then wavelet transform (WT)-based detection methods are presented. Current WT-based methods are introduced for the detection of PQDs. Some PQD events are investigated in MATLAB Simulink by using the developed discrete WT method. The classification of PQDs with AI-based methods are also discussed in the last section. Deep neural networks (DNNs) are presented in the chapter to show the effectiveness of AI-based methods. A hybrid method based on DWT and feed-forward deep neural network (FDNN) is proposed for the classification of PQDs occurring in grid-connected PV systems. The results show that the proposed hybrid WT and FDNN methods classifying nine classes of PQDs have a 99.13% accuracy in the proposed DG system. Consequently, the discussed methods, proposed algorithms, and the obtained results in this chapter will contribute to selecting the proper detection or classification of PQD methods using AI-based methods in smarts grids.
