Determining Process Model Using Time-Based Process Mining and Control-Flow Pattern

Process mining is an emerging discipline incorporating methods and tools for the analysis of system/process executions captured in the form of event logs [1]. Traditionally process mining can be divided into three research areas: discovery (construction of process models from event logs), conformance checking (finding log and model deviations), and enhancement of existing process models with additional event log data.BPMN (Business Process Model and Notation) 2.0 [2] is a widely used process modeling notation, supported by various process modeling and analysis tools, and is a de-facto process modeling standard. Using BPMN within process mining opens perspectives for applicability of the existing process mining techniques: for instance discovered process models can be analyzed or enacted using existing BPMN-based software, and vice versa, manually created models can be imported to a process mining tool, verified against event logs, and enhanced with additional data.In this work we bridge the gap between conventional process modeling formalisms used in the context of process mining (e.g., Petri nets, causal nets, process trees) and BPMN. For that purpose we developed a suite of conversion algorithms and provide formal guarantees relating the behavior of Petri nets (including non-free-choice nets) to the corresponding BPMN models (and vice versa). The derived relations are used to enhance the BPMN models with information learned from the event logs.The developed conversion techniques are described in detail in [3] and have been implemented [4] as a part of ProM (Process Mining Framework) [5] -- an open source tool for process mining and verified on real event log data. Moreover, cases for which conversion algorithms give more compact process models in comparison with the initial models are identified. Although the developed algorithms deal with basic control flow constructs only, they can be applied in the discovery of advanced BPMN modeling elements [2], including subprocesses [6-7], cancellations [8], conditional branching and data objects, swimlanes, message flows, and others.

Process mining is a field of computer science that deals with the discovery and analysis of process models based on automatically generated event logs. Currently, many companies are using this technology to optimize and improve their business processes. However, a discovered process model may be too detailed, sophisticated, and difficult for experts to understand. In this paper, we consider a problem of discovering the hierarchical business process model from a low-level event log, i. e., the problem of the automatic synthesis of more readable and understandable process models based on the data stored in the event logs of information systems. The discovery of better-structured and more readable process models is extensively studied in the framework of process mining research from different perspectives. In this paper, we present an algorithm for discovering hierarchical process models represented as two-level workflow Petri nets. The algorithm is based on predefined event partitioning so that this partitioning defines a sub-process corresponding to a high-level transition at the top level of a two-level net. In contrast to existing solutions, our algorithm does not impose restrictions on the process control flow and allows for concurrency and iterations.

Process mining techniques aim at extracting knowledge from event logs. One of the most important tasks in process mining is process model discovery. In discovering process models, an algorithm is designed to build a process model from a given event log. In this paper, a new model to discover process models has been proposed. A combination of Genetic Algorithm and Simulated Annealing has been used in this model. Genetic Algorithms has previously been used in this context. Previous approaches had drawbacks in fitness evaluation that misguided the algorithm. Another problem was that the quality of the candidates, in the population, was low such that it reduced the chance of finding a perfect answer. In this paper, a new fitness measure has been proposed to evaluate process models based on event logs. Moreover SA has been used to improve the quality of candidates in the population. It has been demonstrated that the proposed model outperformed in terms of rediscovering process models, compared to other approaches which are proposed in the literature, which was the result of better fitness evaluation and increased quality of individuals,. It came to conclusion that using GA and SA in combination with each other can be effective in this context.

Most actual information systems save transactions in event logs. These logs are not often used to improve the quality of the process model. The area of Process Mining provides techniques and tools which allow the extraction of persistent information about the business process model from event logs in order to incorporate them in a decisional system, and optimise the future executions of the business processes. In this paper, we present an approach using (in addition of event logs) some properties of the tasks composing the business processes like minimum and maximum durations. These properties are used to improve the quality of the underlying processes by a best detection of parallelism, loops and duplicated tasks.

Process mining (PM) is a technique to extract a process model from an event log to represent the process behaviour recorded in that event log. A mined process model with high fitness means that it can reflect most of the process behaviour recorded in the event log. Previous studies have shown that the mined model with high fitness can be used in process improvement, such as fraud detection, continuous process improvement and benchmarking. Genetic process mining (GPM) is a famous PM approach, which can simultaneously identify several process structures from event logs. However, GPM cannot effectively discover parallel structures from event logs. This study proposes a PM approach based on integration of GPM, particle swarm optimisation and differential evolution to find process models with high fitness for event logs involving multiple parallel structures. The results show that the proposed approach does indeed lead to improvement in gaining process models with high fitness for event logs involving multiple parallel structures.

Business process model discovery (BPMD) is one of the most important research topics in the business process mining area. Many outstanding BPMD algorithms which perform well in most cases have been developed in the last years. As one of the most widely used BPMD algorithms, the Heuristics Miner meets great challenges while dealing with event logs that contain complex behaviours. As a result, process models with low fitness values might be obtained. In this paper, we propose a new technique that is able to locate the process behaviours recorded in an event log which cannot be expressed by the Heuristics Miner and then transform them into expressible behaviours so that a high-fitness model can be built.

Business process modeling (BPM) is one of the key technologies to benefit enterprises with higher efficiencies and greater business values. However, BPM requires intensive business expertise and human resources. Thus, it is valuable and challenging to enable fast delivery of reusable business process designs, regarding the existence of various popular business processes modeling languages and fast changing markets. In this paper, we generate language-specific business process models and process interaction semantics from UML 2.0 process models. A WS-BPEL metadata model and a process interaction semantics metadata model is defined to annotate UML 2.0 business process model as stereotypes; with a set of transformation patterns, we can generate a WS-BPEL business process model and a process interaction semantics file from each annotated UML 2.0 process model. Our approach can also be similarly applied to other process modeling languages to highly reuse the business process model in UML 2.0.

Business process modeling aims to construct digital representations of processes being executed in the company. However, models derived from the event logs of their execution tend to overcomplicate the desired representation, making them difficult to apply. The most accurate recovery of the business process model requires a comprehensive study of the various artifacts stored in the company's information system. This paper, however, aims to explore the possibility to automatically obtain the most accurate model of business process, using mutual optimization of models recovered from a set of event logs. Further, the obtained models are executed in multi-agent simulation model of company, and the resulting event logs are examined to determine patterns that are specific to distinct employees and those that generally characterize business process.

Business process modelling is an important part of system design. When designing or redesigning a business process, stakeholders specify, negotiate, and agree on business requirements to be satisfied, including non-functional requirements that concern the quality of the business process. This thesis addresses the question of how to specify and compute the quality of a business process, given the model that stakeholders use. The motivation for this thesis is the increasing importance of the quality of business processes. Knowing the quality of specific business processes enables stakeholders to judge if these processes need improvement. Knowing the quality of the constructs of those processes (viz., events, inputs, activities, and outputs) and the way they are structured enables a more detailed analysis of their shortcomings and provides a basis for the design of improvements. The research challenge of this thesis is grounded in the assumption that: “Organisations need an appropriate means to effectively compute achievement of their goals and objectives by their business processes.” Given this challenge, the main research question on which this thesis focuses is: “Can the quality of a business process be computed quantitatively at different levels of granularity?” The research objective is: “To develop frameworks, factors, and metrics for computing non-functional requirements (quality) of business processes quantitatively at different levels of granularity.” The outcomes of this thesis are: 1) BPIMM, a language-independent business process integrating meta-model, based on the concepts of seven mainstream business process modelling languages: BPMN, EPC, RAD, UML AD, SADT, IDEF0, and IDEF3. 2) BPC-QC (Business Process Concept - Quality Computation), an approach to quality computation at the lowest level of granularity of a business process. The approach consists of: i. BPC-QEF (Business Process Concept - Quality Evaluation Framework), a language-independent generic framework and algorithm to compute the quality of the constructs of a business process: event, input, activity, and output. ii. A set of business process quality dimensions and factors. The following quality dimensions are distinguished: performance, efficiency, reliability, recoverability, permissibility, and availability. Each dimension categorises different quality aspects in terms of factors. A non-exhaustive set of sixteen quantitative factors is provided. iii. Quality metrics for each of the quality factors, to facilitate a quantitative computation of the quality of a specific construct of a business process. 3) BP-QC (Business Process - Quality Computation), an approach to compute the quality at the highest level of granularity of a business process. The approach consists of: i. BP-CQCF (Business Process - Compositional Quality Computation Framework), a language-independent generic framework and algorithm to compute the quality of a business process as a whole, given the quality of its constructs. ii. A set of generic business process modelling patterns to decompose a business process into more succinct parts, namely: sequential, parallel with synchronisation, exclusive, inclusive, simple loop, and complex loop. iii. A set of over one hundred computational formulae. For each combination of modelling pattern and a quality factor, there is a formula to compute the quality. 4) AAV (Approach to Application and Validation), an evaluation plan to evaluate BPIMM, BPC-QC and BP-QC in practice, together with expert stakeholders. The plan consists of the units of measure, a measurement model, and a case study procedure. To evaluate the applicability of the contributions of this thesis to real world business needs, four case studies have been conducted in different environments: a Dutch educational institution, a global financial institution, an international financial service provider, and a Dutch research project on crisis management. Each of these case studies concerns a different, single business process. This thesis shows that: 1) A quality computation approach can be adopted independent of a business process modelling language. 2) Quantitative quality factors can be introduced specifically for the constructs of a business process. 3) Quantitative metrics and computational formulae can be developed for specific quality factors, allowing the computation of different aspects of the quality of a business process quantitatively at different levels of granularity. 4) An evaluation plan can be developed to evaluate the applicability of the contributions of this thesis (viz., BPIMM, BPC-QC, and BP-QC). The contributions of this thesis are designed to be beneficial to the areas of business and management, requirements engineering, software engineering, and business process modelling. In the areas of requirements engineering and software engineering, these contributions are intended to help practitioners to consider non-functional requirements at the earliest stage. In the area of business process modelling, information systems, service computing, and cloud computing, the contributions can be used for quality-driven modelling, design, and redesign. To conclude, knowing the quality value of a business process at different levels of granularity provides a basis for its improvement.

Nowadays, organizations use process-aware information systems to understand and apply rapid changes to their processes. Process mining techniques automatically extract true dimensions of organizational processes including process models from data sets like event logs stored in these information systems. In most studies performed in the area of process model discovery, only information of the event logs is used. However, in this research, a novel method of process discovery is proposed, which uses event logs as well as the information on the data exchange among organizational roles, which is derived from physical generalized flow diagram model. This information formed the basis of a two-layered network that represents handover flow and data exchange flow among organizational roles. Then, by extracting and analyzing motifs existing in this network, five rules are set that map motifs with certain features to logical structures constructing process models. Finally, by integrating those structures, the process model will be discovered. The advantage of the proposed method over the previous ones is that from the business process management viewpoint, it is more efficient in detecting sophisticated structures in the process model. It is also highly resistant to noise. These benefits are derived from the fact that it exerts data exchange information along with event log information. Doing various experiments and evaluation of their results using the F-measure confirmed the superiority of this method to previous ones from the viewpoint of the business process management.

The current business environment has no room for inefficiency as it can cause companies to lose out to their competitors, to lose customer trust, and to experience cost overruns. Business processes within the company continue to grow and cause them to run more complex. The large scale and complexity of business processes pose a challenge in improving the quality of process model because the effectiveness of time and the efficiency of existing resources are the biggest challenges. In the context of optimizing business processes with a process mining approach, most current process models are optimized with a trace clustering approach to explore the model and to perform analysis on the resulting process model. Meanwhile, in the event log data, not only the activities but also the other resources, such as records of employee or staff working time, process service time, and processing costs, are recorded. This article proposes a mechanism alternative to optimize business processes by exploring the resources that occur in the process. The mechanism is carried out in three stages. The first stage is optimizing the job shop scheduling method from the generated event log. Scheduling the time becomes a problem in the job shop. Utilizing the right time can increase the effectiveness of performance in order to reduce costs. Scheduling can be defined as the allocation of multiple jobs in a series of machines, in which each machine only does one job at a time. In general, scheduling becomes a problem when sequencing the operations and allocating them into specific time slots without prolonging the technical and capacity constraints. The second stage is generating the resource value that is recorded in the event log from the results of analysis of the previous stage, namely, job shop scheduling. The resource values are multivariate and then clustered to determine homogeneous clusters. The last stage is optimizing the nonlinear multipolynomials in the homogeneous cluster formed by using the Hessian solution. The results obtained are analyzed to get recommendations on business processes that are appropriate for the company’s needs. The impact of long waiting times will increase service costs, but by improving workload, costs can be reduced. The process model and the value of service costs resulting from the mechanism in the research can be a reference for process owners in evaluating and improving ongoing processes.

1 IntroductionOrganizations focus on automate their processes in order to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and/or reduce human beings' errors in an easy and rapid manner. Business process management (BPM) methods provide a solution to this issue. In this context, information systems like CRM, ERP, SCM, etc. have known an increasing demand. The main problem consists of the length of the business process specifications. If new regulations appear, these specifications must be adapted. Manually extraction of visual models is time consuming. During time, a series of solutions were proposed. The literature shows a crowd of approaches that extracts data models [1], [2], [3], and process models [4], [5] from Natural Language (NL) text. This paper aims to analyze the Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques and tools used in order to provide different types of visual representations.On the last few years, approaches based on NLP have been developed in order to automate process conversion from NL text. NLP plays an important role in NL text analysis as NLP tries to understand speech and text as humans beings would do. Colloquialism, abbreviations or typos make this task a challenging one. NLP has the origins in 1950s when Alan Turing proposed the Turing test [6], by introducing the imitation game. Since then, the literature shows a plethora of NLP tools [7], [8], [9], [10] using several machine learning techniques, our focus being on those applied on data models and process models discovery from NL text, starting with the first language parser [11] to the actual ones like NLTk [7], [8], ANTLR1, etc.Linguistic analysis is closely tied to NLP. Liddy [12] highlights 7 levels of linguistic analysis: a) Phonetic or Phonological level: how words are pronounced, b) Morphological level: prefixes, suffixes and roots analysis, c) Lexical level: word level analysis including lexical meaning and Part-Of-Speech (POS) analysis, d) Syntactic level: grammatical analysis of words in a sentence, e) Semantic level: determining the possible meanings of sentences, f) Discourse level: interpreting structure and meaning for texts larger than a sentence, g) Pragmatic level: understanding the purpose of a language.Some of the problems approached by NLP are: POS tagging, parsing, Named Entity Recognition (NER), chunking, Semantic Role Labeling (SRL). Anaphora resolution [13] refers to the interpretation of the link between the anaphor and its antecedents.The remainder of the paper is organized as follows: Section 2 briefly outlines the NLP domain, describing the levels of linguistic analysis and the main NLP approaches of analyzing NL requirements. Section 3 focuses on data and process models extraction from NL text. This section makes an introduction to Object Oriented Analysis and Business Process Modeling and analyses the existing tools that discover data and process models from text. Subsequently, Section 4 summarizes the results of this work and the conclusions are drawn in Section 5.2NLPA detailed review on NLP is given in [14] and in [15]. Jones [14] divides the history of NLP into four phases: the first starts at the beginning of the 1940s and lasts to the late 1960s, the second begins from the end of 60s and lasts to the end of 70s, the third is represented by late 80s, where the fourth phase starts in the late of 90s. Next, we will detail each phase as they were defined in [14] and [15]. First phase treated machine translation issues, while the second focused on artificial intelligence. The third phase can be called grammatico-logical phase, which is followed by the lexical phase. A fifth phase is proposed in [16] where formal theories and statistical data are combined. Since this study was published first in 1994 and then it was re-organized in 2001 we can add the sixth phase: from 2000 until present where NLP techniques are combined in order to contribute to visual models extraction.Software requirements are usually written in NL which is asymmetric and irregular [17]. …

Conformance checking is a method to compare the actually executed business process recorded as an event log with the business process described as a business process model and to identify differences. For human or technical reasons, event logs that contain noise and are of low quality may be recorded. Therefore, methods have been proposed to repair low-quality event logs, but they require the setting of a threshold, and it is difficult to set a suitable threshold. In this paper, we investigate the effect of low-quality event log repair methods on conformance checking. Through experiments, it was shown that the appropriate threshold depends on the type of event log and the amount of noise.

The aim of organizations is to achieve their business goals with reduced costs. Therefore, it is very important to accurately compute the cost of their business processes and to extend the business process models with cost perspective in order to support decision-makers in reducing these costs. Different approaches proposed an extension of business process models with cost perspective using event logs. However, these approaches do not consider the achievement of the business goals, while it is crucial to provide information about costs incurred by the business process execution that led (or not) to the achievement of the business goals. Such costs, named business costs, depend on the reliability of the business process. Thus, we consider to propose a business cost mining approach allowing the extension of business process models with business cost perspective using cost-annotated event logs. This approach includes business cost description and analysis in order to extract knowledge about factors influencing on business costs. This will further support decision-makers to reduce the costs of their business processes.
