Abstract

This chapter argues for leaderless organizations, but more than preaching for their desirability, it outlines their practicability. To do so, a key argument is that different forms of learning and development are required within leaderless organizations, and we present two specific coaching practices. The first is a learning informed coaching, with a focus on coachees and their learning styles, to enable learning about operating in a network where values of cooperation, trust and collaboration become important. The second approach is community of discoveries where the coach facilitates learning through diversity. It supports the exploration of multiple worldviews, social positions and ways of knowing within a community to understand how we think differently. Both are eco-friendly practices that are community-centric to sustain collective leadership, standing in sharp contrast with dominant coaching practices principally concerned with “massaging egos” through the reproduction of established positions with an exaggerated preoccupation of selves.
