Development of Facility Layout for Medium-Scale Industry Using Systematic Layout Planning

Because of the competition of the medical market and the importance of the operaing theatre (OT), the OT process efficiency becomes a hot spot problem in hospital management. The OT facility layout is not only a problem about cost reduction, but also a great contribute to the efficiency of OT process. However, the facility layout optimization of OT was always ignored in the past decades. In order to become more competitive in the medical market, the facility layout of OT should be considered as an essential section in early design phase. To overcome these problems, this paper proposed a approach for designing and optimizing the facility layout of OT in hospitals. First, systematic layout planning (SLP) is applied to design the layout of OT based on the logistics and non-logistics relationships. The SLP is a tool which is used to arrange a workplace in a plant by locating two areas with high frequency and logical relationships close to each other. After that, fuzzy constraint theory is proposed for comprehensively evaluate the layout schemes. Fuzzy constraint theory uses objective function and constraint conditions for solving the problem which involves uncertainty. After designing and optimizing the facility layout of OT in Shanghai East Hospital, we can get the optimal layout plan. The aim of this study was development a new approach to design and optimize the facility layout for OT. This research results are able to help the hospital managers to adopt more modern management approaches in every day practise.

This paper aim is to investigate the work system for printing service and redesign facility layout improvement. A case study was conducted in small company namely Pelangi Advertising Printing. The Systematic Layout Planning (SLP) was adopted in this paper. The input data and activities in the SLP process are as follows: material flow, activity relationship, string diagrams, area requirement, area available, space relationship diagrams, modification consideration and practical limitations. The results of this study indicated the application of SLP in case study company can increase in facility layout efficiency from 96.7% to 98.5%. The redesign facility layout result was more effective than the initial layout.

Good equipment and product design are meaningless if there is no good layout planning. Problems owned by PT. Pilar Kekar Plasindo occurs in the production of small polyethylene. This is because small polyethylene production has large material total transfer distance. Small polyethylene problems include the distance between stations, cross-movement, backtracking, and the broken machine that is still placed in the production section. These conditions make the material handling costs and distance large. Therefore, this research aims to produce a layout design of production facilities that can minimize the distance and cost of material movement. The method used in this study is Systematic Layout Planning (SLP). Three alternative designs were compared, and the second proposed facility layout was chosen because it can reduce the total cost of material transfer by 68.3% and reduce the distance of material transfer by 59.6% from the initial facility layout.

In response to the greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction targets set by the Paris Agreement, green hydrogen has become a key solution for global decarbonisation. However, research on the design of green hydrogen production facilities remains limited, particularly in Brazil. This study bridges this gap by developing a comprehensive design for a green hydrogen production plant powered by an 81 MW photovoltaic (PV) system in Ceará, Brazil. The facility layout, equipment sizing, and resource requirements were determined using the Systematic Layout Planning (SLP) method, based on the available energy for daily hydrogen production. The design also integrates safety regulations, including local standards in Ceará, as well as raw material needs and production capacity. This study delivers a detailed facility layout, specifying equipment placement and capacity based on the PV plant’s output while ensuring compliance with safety protocols. This research contributes to the green hydrogen literature by providing a structured methodology for facility design, serving as a reference for future projects, and fostering the advancement of green hydrogen technology, particularly in developing countries.

This paper presents an analysis on logistics facilities layout of manufacture enterprise and the application of intuitionistic fuzzy sets as an evaluation to optimise logistics facilities layout problem. In this paper, systemic layout planning (SLP) has been employed to design the logistics facilities and determine the optimal location of each warehouse. Innovatively, this paper introduces the intuitionistic fuzzy sets (IFSs) to evaluate logistics facilities layout comprehensively after we formed the facilities layout plan. Most noteworthy is that a broad and detailed two-stage index system of logistics facilities layout has been established including the aspect of economy, efficiency, adaptability, security and environment. Though the comprehensive assessment of production logistics facilities layout is good (G), there exists optimal spatial to improve logistics efficiency. Therefore, we propose a new improved logistics facilities layout. After manufacture enterprise implements the improved logistics facilities layout, its transportation become more unobstructed, waiting time has been reduced and cost of logistics has been decreased consequently.

The competitions among industries will get increasing and grow rapidly along with the advan/cement of technology. The layout of company facilities must be considered well as it holds a vital role in determining the quality of production process. Sofi Garmen Firm has encountered a problem of far distance in material handling among departments that finally triggered disturbance of production activity and huge cost of material handling. Therefore, a design for relayouting production facilities became the research object. It aimed at designing the layout proposal through Systematic Layout Planning and Blocplan methods. To calculate the distance, the researcher employed Rectilinear and Euclidean. The result of both distance calculations in Systematic Layout Planning obtained 29,678.5 meters and 23,375 meters respectively, whereas the cost of material handling gained averagely IDR 1,129,356.5. Meanwhile, the results of distance calculations of Rectilinear and Euclidean in Blocplan earned 30,920 meters and 26,942.5 meters consecutively and the cost of material handling produced averagely IDR 1,237,564.5. Accordingly, the calculation results indicated that the recommendation yielded by Systematic Layout Planning became the most optimum alternative of layout.

An effective facility planning can significantly reduce the operational costs of companies. The facility layout problem is relating to location of objects on a given site and the material flow between these objects. The study conducted in a Hard Disk Drive (HDD) manufacturer. In the company, there are several obstacles was found in the Brushing Room. One of the causes of these obstacles can be marked by the alternating flow during the production process of the Tressel parts, one of the products of the company. To correct the problem of the layout of the existing facilities, it is necessary to redesign the layout of the facilities based on the production process flow. The methods used was the Systematic Layout Planning (SLP) method to minimize costs material handling resulting from the production process. Layout suggested using the SLP method succeeded in reducing the material handling costs (OMH) of the production process flow of the Tressel. This can result in savings in the company’s material handling costs, from IDR 5,377,415 per month to IDR 2,971,717 after the improvement were conducted. OMH is reduced by IDR 2,405,698 in each month and resulting in savings of 44.7%.

Facility layout problem (FLP) contemplates the optimization of space utilization, costs, and material flow. Commercial simulation softwares are commonly used to validate layouts by simulating the real world material flow and production process. To validate a layout scenario of a solar module assembly workshop, a 3D simulation model is presented which was designed on VisualComponents software. To begin with, we introduce the layout characteristics and use the systematic layout planning (SLP) method to design the block layout of workshop. Then, we built components library which contains all the facilities needed in the production line, specifically conveyors, processing equipments, robots, buffers. Finally, we have established a simulation layout model using the components in the customized library according to the block layout, and configured the components which were allocated in the layout by setting the parameters and building the connection between components via signal. To improve the performance of the workshop, we have found the best work-in-process (WIP) value for the workshop and the optimal number of workers. Additionally, the layout model was used to test collision and reachability. It demonstrated the production process in a realistic simulation environment which helped in the sales process as well. The reusable component models we have built make it easy to build a layout within a short time and validate the effectiveness of the layout scenarios for any other projects.

Achieving the "double carbon" goal of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality is also an issue facing the logistics industry. As an example in this paper, taking warehouse layout proposes an improved systematic layout planning (SLP) method that combines mathematical models and dynamic analysis on SLP. This method constructs a dual-objective mathematical model by quantifying the relationship of logistics influencing factors between functional warehouse areas. The genetic algorithm is used to solve the model and obtain the warehouse layout optimization plan. Finally, the optimization plan is modified and adjusted with the dynamic analysis to get the optimal layout plan. Combined case studies show that the optimal approach's warehouse function area layout is more reasonable than the original method. The SLP and genetic algorithm combination replaces traditional manual calculation, avoids human operation errors, and improves accuracy and work efficiency. It provides a new perspective for similar logistics companies in low-carbon development and industrial automation upgrades.

The purpose of this study is to redesign the layout of warehouse facilities using the systematic layout planning (SLP) method at PT XYZ. The method used in this study is the systematic layout planning (SLP) method, which is a method that has new layout results with minimum distance and OMH (material handling costs) results. The results of the study found that the initial layout distance of the storage rack to the pharmacist's room was 624,625m and in the proposed layout it became 416,139m, then also in the initial layout the total moment of storage rack movement to the pharmacist's room was 5833,306m/day and in the proposed layout it became 3439,759m/day. In the initial layout the total material handling cost (OMH) of the storage rack to the pharmacist's room was Rp. 39,793,333.3 and in the proposed layout it became Rp. 2,750,154.7.

PT Solusi Cahaya Teknik is a company engaged in trading and maintenance service that sells consumable products for welding maintenance and repair. The material handling process cannot be separated from the facility layout in the company. The existing problem is regarding the layout that is not well ordered, causing longer and less optimal material handling. This study aims to propose a rearrangement of the facility layout by minimizing the material handling distance. The proposed facility layout is designed using the Systematic Layout Planning and Class Based Storage methods. The Systematic Layout Planning method is used to change the position of the department based on proximity, while Class Based Storage is used to rearrange the product storage area. The result of processing the material handling layout distance before repair is 16.273 meters. While the results of processing after the repair obtained the shortest material handling distance of 7.772 meters with a reduction rate of 8.501 m and a monthly material handling cost of Rp. 2,148,707.98 or 52.2% smaller than the pre-repair layout.

An evolutionary optimal green layout design for a production facility by simulated annealing algorithm

This paper focuses on facility layout design problem in microfluidic device manufacturing. Microfluidics device manufacturing requires exquisite work of operators and relatively much higher material cost than other types of manufacturing. Facility layout problem can directly affect the overall cost of manufacturing, particularly in handling and transport cost. Therefore, the objective of this study is to minimize the total handling and transport cost for facility layout design problem. A genetic algorithm (GA) is employed to find a good alternative facility layout design which is based on the performance metrics. Experimental results show that this approach is more feasible in dealing with the facility layout in microfluidics device fabrication.

ABSTRACTIn manufacturing industries, the facility layout design is a very important task, as it is concerned with the overall manufacturing cost and profit of the industry. The facility layout problem (FLP) is solved by arranging the departments or facilities of known dimensions on the available floor space. The objective of this article is to implement the firefly algorithm (FA) for solving unequal-area, fixed-shape FLPs and optimizing the costs of total material handling and transportation between the facilities. The FA is a nature-inspired algorithm and can be used for combinatorial optimization problems. Benchmark problems from the previous literature are solved using the FA. To check its effectiveness, it is implemented to solve large-sized FLPs. Computational results obtained using the FA show that the algorithm is less time consuming and the total layout costs for FLPs are better than the best results achieved so far.

Facilities and layout planning is a study discipline that has take an important role in company management. There are a lot of problem and inflicts the company because of having a wrong layout of facilities. One of them are material handling in production area, cost of material handling will increase and inflicts the company just because the company has a wrong layout design. Because it takes a long time and a long distance to carry the material from the warehouse to the production area until to the finished goods warehouse. Systematic Layout Planning (SLP) can improve the effectiveness of the wrong layout, this method has other submethod that improve efficiency material flow and decrease the number of infliction, including time; distance; and money. Researcher has a result of literatures review that conclude other methods in facilities layout planning with 10 international journal.
