Development of middle-range theories in nursing

To analyze the scientific literature about the Tracer Method in the area of nursing. Integrative literature review with 22 articles from the following databases: Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences (LILACS); Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online(Medline/PubMed); Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO); Cumulative Index to Nursing & Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) and Web of Science. The search strategy included descriptors and keywords, as follows: Método Tracer, Método Traçador, Método Rastreador, Método de Avaliação, Usuário Guia amd Enfermagem correlated and combined with Boolean operators. Data was organized according to the scenarios where the method was applied, namely: health condition as a tracer condition for assessing the quality of care, compliance and non-compliance regarding the institutional protocols, reflection and training for accreditation. The Tracer Methodology is used for evaluating and improving the quality of care.

Acupuncture is an ancient practice widely spread in the Western Word to provide quality of life and well-being. This study aimed to describe the insertion of systemic acupuncture in the treatment of depression according to the national and international literature. An integrative literature review study, elaborated through the IOP strategy, based on the guiding question: how has acupuncture contributed (or not) to the treatment of depression? The search expression consisted of indexed descriptors and their respective synonyms, combined by Boolean operators, which were inserted in Bases de Dados de Enfermagem (BDENF), Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences (Lilacs), Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (Medline), Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane Library and PsycArticles. Randomized clinical trials and full articles published in Portuguese, English, and Spanish were considered as inclusion criteria. In turn, as exclusion criteria were duplicate articles, studies involving animals, reviews, gray literature, articles that addressed only microsystems (auriculopuncture/auriculotherapy/craniopuncture), electroacupuncture and any other point stimulation other than systemic acupuncture. A total of 21 articles were found, which were read in full, where the positive and negative contributions of acupuncture to the treatment of depression were identified. It was found that acupuncture, as a complementary technique to the conventional treatment of depression, can redeem or reduce symptoms, bringing well-being and quality of life. However, it generates controversy in the literature regarding its effectiveness and safety.

The search for primary articles was held in October 2017 in the Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (through Pubmed), Web of Science and Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences (LILACS). the 16 studies analyzed showed that exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons was associated with cardiovascular diseases, such as increased blood pressure, heart rate variation, and ischemic heart disease; and respiratory disorders, such as decreased lung function, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, wheeze, coughing, pulmonary wheezing, chest tightness, effort dyspnea, and sore throat. polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons cause deleterious effects on the cardiovascular and respiratory systems through mutations and cellular inflammation, being a risk to exposed individuals.

Objective: to know the social determinants of health that influence the lives of women victims of domestic violence. Method: Integrative literature review guided by the following question: What are the social determinants of health that influence the lives of women victims of domestic violence? The search was carried out in the databases: National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health, Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences, Web of Science, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature and the Cochrane Library; articles published in the period from 2015 to 2019. Results: Ten studies were included in the selection, which after analyzed demonstrated the high prevalence of domestic violence, resulting from physical, sexual, emotional aggressions related to social determinants of health such as low educational level, time marriage, unemployment, culture, housing and food insecurity. Conclusion: The health determinants identified in the studies that most influence violence against women are related to the low level of education, economic condition and unemployment, which affect women are only physically, but psychologically, demonstrating the relevance of the study, in knowing the main determinants and to reverse the situation of violence against women.

Objective: Explore the scientific evidence on the use of technologies to prevent the risk of falls in the elderly in the community. Methodology: Integrative literature review in PubMed, Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences and Scientific Electronic Library Online. To integrate the review, the studies needed to respond to 70% of the statements in the review checklist, to validate the quality of the manuscript. Results: 18 studies were identified, which showed the use of health technologies to mitigate the risk of falls, external and internal risk factors for the occurrence of falls and knowledge about falls as a preventive measure. Conclusions: The use of technologies allows the identification of risk factors for falls and can support the multidisciplinary planning of care based on the individualities of the elderly.

to analyze the postnatal care practices of newborns in the family context from the scientific literature. the searches of the integrative literature review were carried out in the Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences (LILACS), Nursing Database (BDENF), Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), and U.S. National Library of Medicine (PubMed) databases. sixteen studies composed the final sample and, from these, two analytical categories emerged: Practices and doubts of families in postnatal care of newborns; and Best practices in postnatal care of newborns. several cultural practices of families differ from scientific recommendations, which can generate risks to the health of newborns. Therefore, it is essential to consolidate educational programs with family members, to improve the quality of care offered and to reduce preventable neonatal deaths in different socio-family contexts.

Introduction: Children and adolescents have special needs, especially in health emergencies. Psychiatric emergencies are especially important due to the increase in depression, suicide and substance abuse among young people. Objective: To discuss the epidemiological factors and updated evidence on the main pediatric health problems, with a focus on child and adolescent psychiatric problems that require acute care. Method: This integrative review was developed through a search in the Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences (LILACS), Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO) and PubMed/Medline databases, using the keywords “child OR children OR adolescent OR kid OR teen” AND “pediatric emergency” AND "psychiatric emergency OR suicide OR overdose OR intoxication OR abuse”. Four articles were included by manual search. After removing duplicates, selecting and analyzing the articles for full reading, 32 articles were used to compose the writing of this review. Results and discussion: Pediatric mental health emergencies, like behavioral disorders, suicide and substance abuse are on the rise. Emergency services face overcrowding, often used as a gateway to psychiatric care. Factors like bullying, violence, and the pandemic worsen the situation. Screening tools for suicide risk are crucial in caring for children and adolescents, and improvements in infrastructure and team training are needed for adequate care. Conclusion: The need to improve pediatric psychiatric care in emergency rooms is highlighted, correcting flaws in assessment and data collection. Periodic training for multidisciplinary teams is essential for more effective and preventive care.

Objective: to investigate the influence of spirituality/religiosity in the context of drug abuse. Methods: this is an integrative review, conducted on the databases Web of Science, Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences and SCOPUS. The following descriptors were used in the Portuguese and English languages: drug users, spirituality, religion, drug abuse treatment centers and treatment outcome. Results: eight articles were analyzed, among which there was a prevalence of publications of the year 2015 and of quantitative studies. The studies approached mainly the prevention of drug abuse, the change of the user’s behavior and the religious/ spiritual confrontation. Conclusion: spirituality/religiosity seems to be a positive factor for drug users facing treatment, as well as in the protection against the abusive use of these psychoactive substances.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic made nurse-patient-family communication more difficult, reducing the understanding of the patient's wishes and current care history. COVID-19 challenged healthcare teams to develop strategies to address these changes and provide more integrated care using the technology at their disposal. So, this study aims to map the strategies used by nurses to maintain communication between the person hospitalized with COVID-19 and the family to understand which communication technologies were most used to maintain communication between the person and the family. Methods: A Scoping Review, according to the recommendations of the Joanna Briggs Institute [JBI] with the Preferred Reporting Items for Scoping Review extension (PRISMA-ScR), research conducted between September 2022 and January 2023. The search was conducted in the databases: Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences (LILACS); Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL); Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO); Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (Medline), using the descriptors: family, communication, nurses, hospitals and COVID-19, and the Boolean operators "AND". The inclusion criteria were: original articles, in Portuguese, English, and Spanish, published from 2020 onwards, with access to full and free text. Results: It was found that most of the communication was unstructured with the family. The technologies most used by nurses were the telephone with video calls from the patients themselves and even from health professionals to maintain communication between the patient and the family. Conclusions: Communication between patients and families became essential during the pandemic, as it became a vital lifeline of human connection that supported the mental health of patients and their families. This study was not registered.

Periodontitis has been associated with an increased risk of events such as myocardial infarction and stroke. The inflammatory process of PD could favor the formation of atherosclerotic plaques, also worsening conditions such as arterial hypertension and heart failure, as well as modulating glucose levels. Therefore, this study aims to conduct an integrative literature review on the main impacts of periodontal diseases on the health of diabetic and heart patients. This integrative literature review has a qualitative methodology and in the development of the following research question: What are the main impacts of periodontal diseases on the health of diabetic and heart patients? For this, the following electronic databases were used: U.S. National Library of Medicine (PubMed), Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), Cochrane Library, Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences (LILACS), to search and identify studies that answered the guiding question of this integrative literature review. The database was searched for studies conducted between January 2020 and January 2025. The study results highlight the strong interrelationship between periodontitis, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases, showing how chronic inflammation from periodontal disease can worsen glycemic control in diabetic patients and increase the risk of cardiovascular complications, such as heart attacks and strokes. In addition, uncontrolled diabetes and cardiac conditions can intensify gum disease, creating a bidirectional cycle of worsening. The conclusion highlights the importance of a multidisciplinary approach, integrating dental and medical care, as well as preventive and therapeutic strategies that prioritize oral health to improve clinical outcomes. Finally, promoting public awareness and education about the connection between oral and systemic health are essential to prevent complications and promote patients' quality of life.

Objetivo: Analisar a produção cientifica relacionada à mortalidade neonatal na primeira semana de vida com base em artigos científicos. Métodos: Estudo exploratório, por meio de uma revisão integrativa onde foi realizada uma busca em artigos, sobre a temática; as bases de dados foram: Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde (BVS), Literatura Latino-Americano e do caribe em Ciências da Saúde (LILACS), Scientific Electronic Library Online (SCIELO). Resultados: Os estudos realizados confirmam que as mortes neonatais são resultantes de uma estreita e complexa relação de fatores sociodemográficos, condições da gestação e parto, bem como das características dos prematuros nascidos vivos. Considerações finais: Embora algumas produções cientificas reconhecerem tais fragilidades na assistência, os autores não assinalaram meios de qualificar o pré-natal. Desta forma se faz necessário, a atenção a gestação em nível primário, muitas das vezes refletem no acolhimento hospitalar, caracterizamos isso como acesso à informação básica das condições em que a gestante se encontra como também da atenção que deve ser tomada por parte da rede hospitalar. As implicações assinalam para as necessidades de intensificar o planejamento e a efetivação das ações e da vigilância na atenção ao neonato.

The study aimed to map digital tools with collective interventions and potential guidelines and limitations in preventing infections related to care in intensive care units. This is an integrative review of the literature, to survey the articles in the literature, a search was carried out in the following databases: Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences and Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online, National Library of Medicine and National Institutes of Health and Nursing Database in the period from April to May 2022. Inclusion criteria: articles published in Portuguese and English, in the years 2011 to 2021, available free of charge and in full. Articles that did not have a well-defined research design were excluded. 1,666 articles were found, after defining the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 305 articles remained, of which ten articles were included in the search. The use of applications is very common among health services and helps organize data, enabling access to information in real time and/or remotely. It is worth mentioning that the development methods of these technologies are complex, involving a mix of instructional, systematized, contextualized and user-centered design. The present study, given the literature found and the evidence presented, shows the importance of technologies in the critical environment in terms of preventing infections, as well as the relevance of constantly updating and building technologies that promote the prevention and optimization of diseases in the process of work.

Objective: to identify in the scientific literature about the systematization of nursing care to patients undergoing hemodialysis. Method: This is an integrative review, carried out in the Electronic Library SCIELO, in the database specialized in nursing and in latin american and caribbean literature in health sciences. The descriptors systematization of nursing care, hemodialysis and nursing process were used for search. Results: seven articles were included in the study. Some publications highlight the importance of SAE for the quality of care for patients on hemodialysis, and other publications have pointed out that the constant training of the nursing team is essential for the development of the nursing process in favor of humanization. Conclusion: the Systematization of Nursing Care is characterized by the organization of the care provided directly influencing the positive results to the promotion, prevention and recovery of the health of the individual with renal failure who undergoes hemodialysis treatment.
