A vehicle tracking system is very useful for tracking the movement of a vehicle from any location at any time. An efficient vehicle tracking system is designed and implemented for tracking the movement of any equipped vehicle from any location at any time. The proposed system made good use of popular technology that combines a smartphone with an Arduino UNO. This easy to make and inexpensive compared to others. The designed in vehicle device works using Global Positioning System (GPS) and Global System for Mobile Communication(GSM) technology that is one of the most common ways for vehicle tracking. The device is embedded inside a vehicle those positions is to be determined and tracked in real time. A vehicle tracking system is an electronic device installed in a vehicle to enable the owner or a third party to track the vehicle's location. This paper proposed to design a vehicle tracking system that works using GPS and GSM technology, which would be the cheapest source of vehicle tracking and it would work as anti-theft system. It is an embedded system which is used for tracking and positioning of any vehicle by using Global Positioning System (GPS) and Global system for mobile communication (GSM). An Arduino UNO is used to control the GPS receiver and GSM module. The vehicle tracking system uses the GPS module to get geographic coordinates at regular time interval. The GSM module is used to transmit and update the vehicle location to a database. This paper gives minute by minute update about vehicle location by sending SMS through GSM modem. This SMS contain latitude and longitude of the location of vehicle. Arduino UNO gets the coordinates from GPS modem and then it sends this information to user in text SMS. GSM modem is used to send this information via SMS sent to the owner of the vehicle. Location is displayed on LCD. And then Google map displays location and name of the place on cell phone. Thus, user able to continuously monitor a moving vehicle on demand using smartphone and determine the estimated distance and time for the vehicle to arrive at a given destination.

Integrating Passive Millimeter Wave camera (PMMW), Global Positioning System (GPS), and Differential Global Positioning System (DGPS) provides a pilot with a visual precision approach and landing in inclement weather conditions conceivably down to CAT III conditions. A DARPA funded, NASA Langley managed Technology Reinvestment Program (TRP) consortium consisting of Honeywell, TRW, Boeing, and Composite Optics Corporations is demonstrating the PMMW camera. The TRW developed PMMW camera displays the runway through fog, smoke, and clouds in day or night conditions. The Global Air Traffic Program Office entered into a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRDA) with Honeywell to demonstrate DGPS. The Honeywell developed DGPS provides precision navigational data to within 1 m error where GPS has 100 m of error. In inclement weather the runway approach is initiated using GPS data until a range where DGPS data can be received. The runway is presented to the pilot using the PMMW image viewed via a Heads Up Display (HUD) or Head Mounted Display (HMD). At a range where DGPS data is available, a precise runway and horizon symbology is computed in the Flight Display Computer and overlaid on the PMMW image. Image processing algorithms operate on the PMMW image to identify and highlight obstacles on the runway. The integrated system provides the pilot with an enhanced situation awareness of the runway approach in inclement weather. When a DGPS ground station is not available at the landing area, image processing algorithms (again operating on the PMMW image) generate the runway and horizon symbology. GPS provides the algorithm with initial conditions for runway location and perspective. The algorithm then locates and highlights the runway and any obstacles on the runway. The main component of Global Positioning System (GPS) positioning error results from time and space varying conditions of radio wave propagation, which depend on atmospherics, disturbances in the satellite constellation, orbit stability, and also due to the U. S. military intentionally such as Selective Availability (SA), among other things. The error caused by the transmitter and receiver operation precision or time-measurement accuracy is negligible. A method for GPS precision enhancement commonly used by civil users is the Differential GPS (DGPS). If DGPS service is interrupted, it will lead to the degraded navigation performance. This paper focuses on applying a Π-Σ Neural Network (PSNN) model to predict Pseudo-Range Corrections (PRC) for DGPS. A low cost commercial module (Rockwell single-frequency GPS receiver) is employed to represent the improvement in DGPS. Experimental results show the proposed NN can online predict the PRC precisely when the PRC signal is lost for a short period of time.

In this work, an advanced vehicle monitoring and tracking system is proposed and designed for the purpose of monitoring the vehicles which are moving from one place to the other in order to provide safety and security. The proposed method puts together superior exercise of contemporary technology by means of Embedded C programming language and the unit developed via LPC2148 and its sophisticated features of storing database. The work includes Global Positioning System (GPS) and Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM) for vehicle tracking and monitoring purpose using SIM800 module. The GPS provides present site of the vehicle; GPRS sends the tracking information to the server and thus an alert message generated is transmitted to the owner of the vehicle. This scheme is deployed in the interior of the vehicle whose location is to be determined on the web page and supervised at real time. Hence, if the driver drives the vehicle on the wrong path then the alert message will be sent from the proposed system to the vehicle’s owner mobile and if the vehicle’s driver feels drowsy or drunk then also the warning sound is produced by Buzzer. The proposed system take care of the traveler’s safety by using Alcohol sensor to find the status of the driver and Temperature sensor to monitor vehicle Engine Temperature to avoid sparking of the vehicle their by preventing from the disaster.

A real-time integrated navigation system with 2-cm position accuracy was developed using commercial off-the shelf (COTS) equipment including inertial sensors and differential Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers, and was demonstrated for transportation applications with an emphasis on lane departure detection. A 900-MHz radiofrequency communications link transmits GPS base station range and carrier phase measurements to a GPS receiver on the vehicle. The GPS receiver calculates the vehicle position relative to the surveyed base location. The loosely coupled eight-state extended Kalman filter with 10-Hz navigation aids provides smoothed position information between 2-Hz GPS updates and provides graceful degradation in the presence of GPS blockages or communication dropouts. Currently, the navigation aids include anti-lock braking system wheel turns, electronic compass heading and pitch, and map vertical height. Data acquisition and Kalman filtering systems were developed to handle real-time processing and recording of all instrument data for further post-test system evaluation to determine the optimum configuration. An accurate rapid survey and map representation approach for measuring lane boundaries was validated using a vehicle, demonstrating inherit repeatability by the GPS positioning system. Real-time lane departure monitoring was developed. A video camera was installed to assist in accurate surveying and real-time system validation. This GPS-based positioning system is suitable for highway speeds during all weather conditions. It can be extended to other collision avoidance, drowsy driver awareness, advanced curve or intersection warnings, SOS, tracking, automated control, fast precision road mapping, and traffic management applications.

In recent years the importance of real-time positioning and navigation with the Global Positioning System (GPS) has grown rapidly. Starting from the establishment of differential GPS (DGPS) reference stations for marine and land navigation, new users and applications have emerged that resulted in a high demand for the establishment of a high-density network of reference stations around the world. Many countries have established their own DGPS service, which is either governmentally or commercially owned. These services are referred to as Local Area DGPS Systems (LADGPS). However, the costs for the establishment and maintenance of a dense network of reference stations are very high. Therefore Wide Area DGPS Systems (WADGPS) are being developed to overcome the main drawbacks of LADGPS. In this case, only a few reference stations are used to cover a large area, such s a continent like Europe. To achieve high positioning accuracies, real-time modeling of the main error sources for long-range baselines is required as errors in the satellite orbit and ionospheric refraction do not cancel entirely in double differencing. In this article, a real-time correction model based on the Kalman filter for WADGPS and networked LADGPS services is discussed and results of field tests in a WADGPS network in Europe are presented. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Abstract— Vehicle tracking system using GPS and GPRS integration googlemap provide information that is maximized with the technology of GPS (Global Positioning System) receiver which can indicate the position of the vehicle with the map and the ability of the appointment of direction and position coordinates (x, y or latitude, longitude) textually and visual at any location. Vehicle tracking system is built using equipment GIS (Geographic Information System) and dedicated to smartphones which support Global Positioning System (GPS), as well as portable computers, using General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) as a connection to the internet. The hardware used is a smartphone that supports GPS with supporting tools used are GoogleMaps, Notepad + +, NetBeans IDE 6.5.1, Mysql, Java (J2ME), PHP, JavaScript. The results of this system in the form of tracking system capable of monitoring the movement of vehicles on an ongoing position by utilizing GPS and GPRS as the sender of the wireless data and Internet connections. The Global Positioning system (GPS) is used for navigation and associated tasks in wide variety of applications. One of the primary modes of GPS operation is differential GPS. Differential GPS allows more accurate positioning than stand-alone GPS. Many new applications are possible because of the increased accuracy obtained through differential GPS. In this paper the techniques and methods of differential GPS along with the algorithms are discussed which are providing more accurate and precise positioning in recent trends of communication. The purpose of the paper is to introduce the principles of differential GPS theory, and to provide a background for more advanced material.

The difference in ionospheric delay between paths to the reference and mobile stations for differential GPS has been quantified for equatorial region. This small additional ionospheric error can be evaluated and predicted for the mobile station by means of a determined differential delay along the baseline so that accurate correction can be made for the most precise positioning. In this paper we studies the ionospheric delay on the Global Positioning System (GPS) signal due to the variation of elevation angle and variation in total electron content (TEC) and ionospheric profiles utilizing the Modified Jones 3D Ray Tracing method. The differential delay can be determined for any azimuth angle of propagation and for any baseline direction, providing the approximate difference in line-of-sight (LOS) between the stations. Result show that the variations of elevation angle and TEC give effects on the difference in delay between the two stations in differential GPS (dGPS). This analysis determined the difference in ionospheric delay expected over a short baseline so that a more accurate differential GPS correction can be made.

Currently the number of private vehicles is increasing day by day and hence the importance of tracking and theft prevention. Recently the vehicle tracking systems are getting wide popularity and can be used in tracking in case of stolen vehicles. Real-time applications like Vehicle Tracking System is developed using Arduino board with a microcontroller. We have developed a vehicle tracking system with a Smartphone which is less expensive and reliable when compared to the existing system as there is no need for extra hardware. The objective is to develop an application for tracking vehicles, which will help the cab owners to track their car all the time and to predict the location of the vehicle in the case of a failing GPS (Global Positioning System). Time series prediction algorithm is used to predict the location of the vehicle if GPS is in off mode. The vehicle tracking system installed will update the GPS coordinates of the vehicle continued to the cloud, and this data can be used for predicting the location of the vehicle in case of emergency. This system can also be used to generate the bills after finishing the freight in the form of an SMS based on the distance traveled, which can be calculated from the latitude and longitude data. The GPS data can be mapped to the Google maps to track the location in real time. Compared with the existing system, this system is having the advantage of location prediction from the historic location data, and the cost is reduced by almost half.

The device is embedded inside a vehicle whose position is to be determined and tracked in real-time. A microcontroller is used to control the GPS and GSM/GPRS modules. The vehicle tracking system uses the GPS module to get geographic coordinates at regular time intervals. The GSM/GPRS module is used to transmit and update the vehicle location to a database. A Smartphone application is also developed for continuously monitoring the vehicle location. The Google Maps API is used to display the vehicle on the map in the Smartphone application. Thus, users will be able to continuously monitor a moving vehicle on demand using the Smartphone application and determine the estimated distance and time for the vehicle to arrive at a given destination. In order to show the feasibility and effectiveness of the system, this paper presents experimental results of the vehicle tracking system and some experiences on practical implementations.

An advanced vehicle monitoring and tracking system is designed for monitoring the school vehicle from any location A to location B at real time and provide safety environment to the traveler. The proposed system would make good use of new technology that based on Embedded Linux board namely Raspberry Pi and its advanced feature of storing database at real time. The proposed system works on Global Positioning System (GPS) and Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM) which is used for vehicle tracking and monitoring mechanism. For this purpose SIM908 Module is used which includes all the three things namely GPS GPRS GSM. The GPS gives current location of the vehicle; GPRS sends the tracking information to the server and the GSM is used for sending alert message to vehicle's owner mobile. The proposed system would place inside the vehicle whose position is to be determined on the web page and monitored at real time. In the proposed system, there is comparison between the current vehicle path and already specified path inside the file system of Raspberry pi. Hence if the driver drives the vehicle on the wrong path then the alert message will be sent from the proposed system to the vehicle's owner mobile and if the vehicle's speed goes beyond the specified value of the speed, then also the warning message will be sent from system to the owner mobile. The proposed system also took care of the traveler's safety by using LPG Gas leakage sensor MQ6 and temperature sensor DS18B20.

FAA and NASA have established a joint program to evaluate the technical feasibility of using guidance from the satellite-based NAVSTAR Global Positioning System (GPS) for Category I11 (CAT 111) precision approaches. A combination of analyses, simulation tests and flight tests will be used to evaluate Differential GPS (DGPS) techniques for CAT I11 applications. Emphasis will be placed on meeting accuracy and integrity requirements for a complete DGPS-based CAT I11 autoland capability. Contractors will be requested to supply the ground and airborne equipment for computing the DGPS-based aircraft position and velocity. Contractors will also provide their own aircraft completely equipped with a DGPS-based capability. Feasibility will be demonstrated by meeting either sensor accuracy requirements for Instrument Landing System (ILS) CAT I11 applications or Total System Error (TSE) requirements currently under development. Additionally, the existing FAA Advisory Circulzus for CAT 11, CAT I11 and autoland approaches should be used as a guide for system development. It is expected that meeting TSE requirements would place less demand on the performance of the DGPS-based sensor than meeting ILSwves an based navigation sensor requirements. Localization of a vehicle is a key component for driving assistance or autonomous navigation. In this work, we propose a visual positioning system (VPS) for vehicle or mobile robot navigation. Different from general landmark-based or model-based approaches, which rely on some predefined known landmarks or a priori information about the environment, no assumptions on the prior knowledge of the scene are made. A stereo-based vision system is built for both extracting feature correspondences and recovering 3-D information of the scene from image sequences. Relative positions of the camera motion are then estimated by registering the 3-D feature points from two consecutive image frames. Localization of the vehicle is finally given by the reference to its initial position. I. INTRODUCTION Localization and tracking of a vehicle are major compo- nents for providing positions, directions and travel informa- tion to the driver. They also serve as key technologies for building autonomous navigation systems. Many approaches have been proposed for locating a mobile robot or a ve- hicle based on various techniques. The most commonly used methods include dead-reckoning techniques, navigation using active beacons, landmark-based navigation, map-based navigation, global positioning system (GPS), and vision- based positioning. Dead-reckoning is a procedure for determining the present location of a vehicle by advancing some previous position through known path and velocity information over a given period of time. Since an odometer and optical sensors for wheel direction detection are easily installed on a vehicle, dead-reckoning is usually a less expensive method for vehicle localization. However, the integration of incremental motion information over time will lead to accumulation of errors. In the case of long distance travel, accumulation of orientation error will make position errors diverge as the increase of driving time. Active beacons such as laser, sonar or radio can be used as media for vehicle or mobile robot navigation. These approaches use triangulation to measure the distance between a number of beacons and the mobile platform and then deter- mine the current location. The problems associated with this technique are the inaccuracy of the distance measurement caused by time-delay of the signals, and the installation and maintenance cost of a large number of beacons required for an area. Satellite based differential global positioning system (DGPS) is probably the most advanced and accurate method for identifying the position and orientation of an object. However, DGPS does not work well if the satellite signals are blocked. This situation commonly happens in the indoor environments, or urban areas with tall buildings, etc. In this work, we propose a visual positioning system (VPS) for vehicle or mobile robot navigation. Different from general landmark-based or model-based approaches which rely on some predefined known landmarks or ap rioriinfor- mation about the environment (e.g., 3-D models of buildings, objects, etc.), no assumptions on the prior knowledge of the scene are made. A stereo-based vision system is built for both extracting feature correspondences and recovering 3- D information of the scene from image sequences. A robust feature tracking method based on simultaneously considering the inter-frame images from the same camera and the stereo image pair from different cameras at a fixed time instant is developed. The relative position of the camera motion is then estimated by registering the 3-D feature points from two consecutive image frames. Our system includes the following basic modules:

Information communication technology related vehicle services need to support location and the transmission of communication and traffic information between vehicles, or between vehicles and infrastructure. In particular, the technology for the measurement of the accurate location of a vehicle is dependent on location-determination technology like Global Positioning System, and this technology is very important for vehicle driving and location services. If, however, a vehicle is in a Global Positioning System radio-shadow area, neither a Global Positioning System nor a Differential Global Positioning System can accurately measure the corresponding location because of a high error rate caused by the shadowing intervention. Even an Inertial Measurement Unit could provide inaccurate location data due to sensor drift faults around corners and traffic-road speed dumps. Vehicles, therefore, need an absolute location to prevent the provision of inaccurate vehicle-location data that is due to radio-shadow areas and relational Inertial Measurement Unit positions. To achieve this, we assume that vehicle-to-infrastructure communication is possible between a vehicle and roadside unit in Vehicular Ad hoc Networks. We used iBeacon at the roadside unit and revised its Universally Unique Identifier so that it generates absolute Global Positioning System location data; that is, moving vehicles can receive absolute Global Positioning System data from the roadside unit-based iBeacon. We compared the proposed method with current Global Positioning System and Inertial Measurement Unit systems for the following two cases: one with a radio-shadow area and one without. We proved that the proposed method generates location data that are more accurate than those of the other methods.
