DIRICHLET TYPE PROBLEM FOR THE SYSTEM OF NONLINEAR BELTRAMI EQUATIONS WITH SINGULAR POINT

This article is a survey of papers connected with obtaining apriori estimates of the norms of the radius-vector of an ovaloid of positive curvature and with related questions of the theory of elliptic differential equations. New results are presented involving estimates of the norms of the radius vector “right up to the boundary” of a locally convex surface of positive curvature with boundary.

A new technique for solving the large system of linear algebraic equations associated with implicit differencing of multidimensio nal partial differential equations is presented. The coefficient matrix of the equations is factored, and then approximations to certain terms in the matrix are obtained from series expansions. The resulting system of equations is solved easily. The method is developed and demonstrated using a simple representative two-dimensional equation. Very good results are obtained when one direction is dominant. MPLICIT finite-difference schemes for the solution of multidimensional partial differential equations are usually stable and therefore applicable to a large class of problems. However, they are difficult to implement and may require an excessive amount of computer storage and time. The long computing time arises from the need to solve the large system of linear algebraic equations that result from the differencing. The computing time can be reduced significantly by approximating the coefficient matrix of the linear equations with a matrix that produces a system of equations that are relatively easy to solve. Among such methods are the alternating direction method (ADI)l used by Beam and Warming2 and Stone's strongly implicit method,3 which has been tested by Linetal.4 In this paper, a new technique for solving the large system of linear algebraic equations associated with implict differencing of multidimensional partial differential equations is presented. This method, called the pseudo-elimination method (PE), is shown to be faster than Stone's method for certain problems. The method is directly applicable to linear and linearized nonlinear systems of parabolic or elliptic partial differential equations. In order to discuss the method, a simple linear partial differential equation will be used; however, it should be kept in mind that the PE method is applicable to much more complicated problems. The question of whether the method will work when applied to difficult problems is not addressed. The scope of this paper is limited to presenting the method and illustrating, via a simple problem, that the method has some merit and deserves further study.

CANM, a program for numerical solution of a system of nonlinear equations using the continuous analog of Newton's method

The subject of this work is the development of a nonlinear model of the interaction of an unsteady fluid flow with a structure and finding analytical solutions for the system of equations that correspond to the specified model. The convection effect of the fluid velocity field was already considered in the previous works of the authors of this paper. These studies are devoted to the water hammer without considering the "flow-structure" interaction. This work expands the possibilities of modeling and considers four equations instead of two equations of the theory of the water hammer (equations of conservation of mass and momentum), two of which relate to the motion of particles of a solid body (pipes or structures). The novelty of this work lies in the consideration of the model that describes the interaction of the flow with the structure, the convection in the velocity field, and the effect, together with the friction of the fluid against the solid wall, on the dynamics of the shock pulse propagation process both in the fluid and in the solid body. It should be noted that the solution of the nonlinear system of differential equations as a whole is carried out by an analytical method, which makes it possible to obtain an exact (rather than numerical) solution of the problem. Since the effects of various factors should be evaluated by comparison with the main components, dimensionless equations containing six parameters (dimensionless combinations) were obtained in this study. Two of these parameters were named after scientists – Darcy and Weisbach (steady friction) and Bruno (unsteady friction). Particular cases of the general (full) model were considered, and the effects of various factors on the dynamics of the interaction of the flow with the structure during the propagation of the shock pulse were determined. Research methods are purely theoretical. The concepts of a self-similar equation and a system of equations, balances of forces acting on particles of a fluid and a solid body, and a standard method of reducing a system of equations to a single equivalent equation are used. Conclusions. An extended model of the interaction between the unsteady fluid flow and the structure is proposed. The transition to a self-similar variable makes it possible to solve a nonlinear system of differential equations and obtain an analytical (exact) solution. The functions of longitudinal stress in a solid body, pressure disturbance, and velocity of motion of particles in a solid body (pipe) are linearly expressed by the velocity of shock pulse propagation in the fluid. It should also be noted that the results for the particular case of the linear model completely agree with the already known ones. The advantage of using a self-similar solution is that it is easy to obtain. The results of previous studies on the water hammer problem were qualitatively consistent. As the fluid viscosity increases, the shock pulse domain becomes more concentrative.

This chapter is about metric spaces, an abstract generalization of the real line that allows discussion of open and closed sets, limits, convergence, continuity, and similar properties. The usual distance function for the real line becomes an example of a metric. The other notions are defined in terms of the metric. The advantage of the generalization is that proofs of certain properties of the real line immediately go over to all other examples. Section 1 gives the definition of metric space and open set, and it lists a number of important examples, including Euclidean spaces and certain spaces of functions. Sections 2 through 4 develop properties of open and closed sets, continuity, and convergence of sequences that are simple generalizations of known facts about $\mathbb{R}$. Section 5 shows how a subset of a metric space can be made into a metric space so that the restriction of a continuous function from the whole space to the subset remains continuous. It also shows that three natural metrics for the product of two metric spaces lead to the same open sets, continuous functions, and convergent sequences. Section 6 shows that any metric space is “Hausdorff,” “regular,” and “normal,” and it goes on to exhibit three different countability hypotheses about a metric space as equivalent. A metric space with these properties is called “separable.” Section 7 concerns compactness and completeness. A metric space is defined to be “compact” if every open cover has a finite subcover. This property is equivalent to the condition that every sequence has a convergent subsequence. The Heine–Borel Theorem says that the compact sets of $\mathbb{R}^n$ are exactly the closed bounded sets. A number of the results early in Chapter I that were proved by the Bolzano–Weierstrass Theorem in the context of the real line are seen to extend to any compact metric space. A metric space is “complete” if every Cauchy sequence is convergent. A metric space is compact if and only if it is complete and “totally bounded.” Section 8 concerns connectedness, which is an abstraction of the property of an interval of the line that accounts for the Intermediate Value Theorem. Section 9 proves a fundamental result known as the Baire Category Theorem. A sample consequence of the theorem is that the pointwise limit of a sequence of continuous complex-valued functions on a complete metric space must have points where it is continuous. Section 10 studies the spaces of real-valued and complex-valued continuous functions on a compact metric space. A generalization of Ascoli's Theorem from the setting of Chapter I provides a characterization of compact sets in either of these spaces of continuous functions. A generalization of the Weierstrass Approximation Theorem, known as the Stone–Weierstrass Theorem, gives sufficient conditions for a subalgebra of either of these spaces of continuous functions to be dense. One consequence is that these spaces of continuous functions are separable. Section 11 constructs the “completion” of a metric space out of Cauchy sequences in the given space. The result is a complete metric space and a distance-preserving map of the given metric space into the completion such that the image is dense.

A simple model for the size dependence of liquid–vapor surface energy of a liquid drop, free of any adjustable parameter, has been extended for the size dependence of the surface energy of nanovoids in this work. Considering nanovoids, there is a negative curvature on the void surface, which is completely different from nanoparticles or liquid drops, which have positive curvature surfaces. Thus curvature has an important effect on material properties. Moreover, by introducing negative curvature into the model for deduction of liquid–vapor surface energy, a successful prediction for the behaviour of argon (Ar) and silicon (Si) surface energy on the surface of nanovoids are obtained, which further confirms the role of curvature. Furthermore, it is shown that the surface energy of nanovoids increases as void size is reduced, suggesting a greater difference in energy between surface atoms and interior atoms, especially when void size is smaller than 4 nm. This is owing to the fact that the surface energy gradually approaches that of the bulk when the void size is larger than 4 nm. Thus, the effect of size on the surface energy of voids is significant when the voids are of small dimensions.

An approach to solutions of systems of linear partial differential equations with applications

The solution of a system of nonlinear algebraic or transcendental equations is probably one of the most difficult problems in numerical analysis. In general, it is almost impossible to find the solution, unless an approximate value is already known. Linear equations occur more frequently in numerical calculations, simply because it is difficult and sometimes impossible to solve the corresponding nonlinear problem. Most of the equations governing the physical world are nonlinear, but very often for simplicity and tractability linear models are considered. Solution of boundary value problems for differential equations also lead to a nonlinear equation or a system of nonlinear equations. Solution of a system of nonlinear equations also arises in numerical analysis, while deriving certain formulae. As we have seen in Chapter 6, the Gaussian quadrature formulae can be obtained by solving a system of nonlinear equations.

The integro‐differential system of viscoelasticity equations with a source of explosive type is considered. It is assumed that the coefficients of the equations depend only on one spatial variable. The problem of determining the matrix kernel included in the integral terms of the equations is studied. The solution of the problem is reduced to a series of inverse problems for scalar hyperbolic equations. For each case, the inverse problem is replaced by an equivalent system of integral equations for unknown functions. The principle of constricted mapping in the space of continuous functions with weighted norms to the latter is applied. The theorems of global unique solvability are proved, and the stability estimates of solution to the inverse problems are obtained.

Redetermined system of second-order partial differential equations with one singular point and one boundary supersingular is considered in the paper. The general solution of this system is found in explicit form with one arbitrary constant using. Then a condition equivalent to the compatibility conditions of this system is obtained by substituting the general solution into the third equation of this system. If condition is performed, then a solution is reduced to a system of second-order ordinary differential equations with one supersingular line solving. A general solution of the redetermined system is found by resulting system solving in explicit form with three arbitrary constants using.

A system of fractional differential equations (FDEs) with fractional derivatives of diverse orders is called an incommensurate system of FDEs. In this paper, the well-posedness of the initial value problem for incommensurate systems of FDEs is obtained on the space of continuous functions. Three different methods for this analysis are used and compared. The complexity of such analysis is reduced by new techniques. Strong existence results are obtained by weaker conditions. The uniqueness and the continuous dependency of the solution on initial values are investigated using the Gronwall inequality.
