Dissemination of Knowledge and Sharing Experiences in Emerging Issues through a Remote Summer School

The Greenland Ice Sheet Ocean Science Network (GRISO) project, funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), facilitates innovative approaches to geosciences education through its annual two-week summer school in Greenland. Since its inception in 2022, this program has become a hallmark of GRISO’s efforts to cultivate interdisciplinary collaboration and foster equitable research in and around Greenland. The summer school brings together early-career researchers from diverse disciplines and nations to engage with Greenland-focused research themes, such as ice-ocean interactions, climate impacts, and sustainable development. Participants benefit from direct engagement with local researchers and organizations, and actively apply their experiences to find innovative ways to move forward Greenland-focused research in an equitable way.The curriculum emphasizes collaborative techniques and a broad introduction to a multitude of research disciplines and methods, equipping participants with skills to design and execute research projects that respect and integrate local knowledge and priorities. Field-based activities, exchange with local experts and organizations, and community interactions create a dynamic learning environment, fostering partnerships that extend beyond the summer school. By conducting these summer schools, GRISO contributes to training a new generation of researchers prepared to mindfully address complex Arctic challenges through innovative and inclusive approaches.This presentation will share insights from the summer schools, highlight its alignment with the current U.S. and Greenland research strategies, and discuss its broader impact on the landscape of Greenland-focused research.

Nearly 40% of the world's population lives within 100 km of the coast. Coastal ecosystems are subject to growing anthropic pressures putting at risk many vital services for the development and well-being of populations. Monitoring these ecosystems efficiently is thus a necessity in order to evaluate and reduce marine pollution, as prioritized by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG target 14.1). As recommended in the Global Ocean Science Report1 and across the UN Ocean Decade initiative2, it is crucial to improve the scientific knowledge through actions aiming at strengthening the capacities of regions and communities to protect the marine ecosystems.The “Chemical monitoring of Coastal environments Summer School” was created to transfer operational skills for the protection and sustainable management of marine resources in developing countries. Since October 2022, 20 academic trainees from 12 countries (Brazil, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Benin, Cameroon, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Mauritania, Vietnam, Thailand and The Philippines) attended a 2-week program in Nantes (France) to gain scientific knowledge and practical guidelines in sampling, marine chemical data analysis and interpretation for marine coastal chemical monitoring. This action, co-funded by the Agence Française de Développement (AFD), addresses two main goals: 1) transferring educational program to academic staff including targeted scientific knowledge and standardized analytical protocols and 2) creating a worldwide mentored network of experts able to monitor the Ocean pollution in areas where chemical data is scarce. Topics such as monitoring network design, sampling strategy, chemical analysis (metals, organic pollutants, nutrients) or chemical risk assessment were addressed by combining scientific lectures (Biogeochemistry, Ecotoxicology, Environmental Psychology, Scientific Mediation …) and practical work from the field to the lab.This presentation intends to share feedback experience after completion of two sessions of the summer school. This study investigates the impact of innovation networks on knowledge diffusion, aligning with the Knowledge Spillover Theory of Entrepreneurship (KSTE). It explores how these networks promote sustainability-oriented innovation and enhance corporate performance across industries, focusing on the Ghanaian context. A theoretical framework was developed using a two-dimensional fixed effects model and instrumental variable estimations. The analysis utilized longitudinal data from the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) via the PENTSCOPE database from 2000 to 2023. The study reveals that robust innovation networks significantly enhance knowledge diffusion. Absorptive capacity plays a crucial mediating role, enabling firms to assimilate and apply external knowledge effectively. Additionally, organizational culture is a critical moderator, with adaptive and collaborative cultures fostering more efficient knowledge integration. The results highlight the pivotal role of innovation networks in transforming technological advancements into measurable performance outcomes, driving sustainable innovation and competitive advantage. This research extends the KSTE framework by integrating the network theory to examine how firms exploit external knowledge. It provides empirical evidence from the Ghanaian context, offering novel insights into how innovation networks can foster knowledge diffusion and sustainable development. This study’s findings contribute to theoretical discourse and practical applications, emphasizing the importance of strategic engagement in innovation networks and adaptive organizational cultures for long-term success. This research provides insights applicable to other emerging economies, highlighting how robust innovation networks can drive knowledge diffusion and sustainable development beyond the Ghanaian context.

The most important aim of the study is to introduce the theoretical background of my PhD dissertation – agricultural environmental management –, in order to help the scientific foundations for my dissertation, which is in progress. For this reason I will try to clarify and systematize facts found in the special literature according to my own thoughts, from a new aspect.In my study, I therefore attempt to introduce the theoretical background of sustainable development as pertains to the subsidies of agricultural environmental management (National Agricultural Environmental Management Program, National Regional Development Plan, agricultural environmental management measures). Having clarified the concepts I place sustainable development in the economic theories directed to the treatment of environmental problems, introduce where subsidies are within the environmental regulation implements and I dwell on to the institutional questions in the explanation. I then study questions of sustainable agricultural economics. Accession to the European Union has to be considered as one of the most important concrete motivities of domestically coming into prominence of agricultural environmental subsidies therefore I think it is important to study how the problematic of sustainable development, sustainable agricultural development and agricultural environment protection worked out in the EU. Finally I survey the main characteristics of domestic agricultural environment management programs fitting into the theories explained above, how the program adjusts to the theories of sustainable development and sustainable agricultural development.In the dissertation I begin with sustainable development as the broadest theoretical background, then I survey a narrower category, the theories of sustainable agricultural development and how concrete agricultural environmental programs fit into the studied theoretical relations.

Global society is facing major challenges, which are to be met by pursuing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Digitalization processes bring many opportunities for achieving SDGs, but they also bring pitfalls. For example, on one hand, social media makes it easier for more parts of society to participate. On the other hand, the ability to rapidly circulate unfiltered information can lead to the spread of misinformation and subsequently interfere with the achievement of SDGs. This effect could be observed during the COVID-19 pandemic and continues to occur in the context of climate change. Young people are especially likely to be exposed to misinformation on social media. With this in mind, it is enormously important for schools to prepare young people to critically handle the overload of information available online. The aim of this study was to provide future middle and high school teachers with a fruitful approach to foster a critical attitude towards information in classrooms. To this end, we expanded an existing approach by implementing active, technique-based inoculation and technique-based debunking within the COVID-19 content framework in a teacher education course. This implementation was monitored by a mixed-methods study with n = 24 future middle and high school teachers who participated in two courses in subsequent semesters. By performing statistical analysis on pretests and posttests and qualitative content analysis on reflective journal entries, we found that future teachers’ self-efficacy expectations for detecting and debunking misinformation, as well as their debunking skills, increased throughout the courses. In addition, our results show that future teachers perceive active, technology-based inoculation as a helpful approach for their future teaching. They feel that this approach can be a way to implement education for sustainable development in schools with a focus on the promotion of critical thinking. In summary, we believe that the approach presented in this article may be beneficial for teaching the critical treatment of information in various thematic contexts.

Solving important social problems and promoting sustainable development requires solutions involving multiple stakeholders. Nevertheless, previous social marketing studies were limited to individual behavioral changes and lacked a perspective to involve surrounding stakeholders. This study focused on education for sustainable development (ESD) on a field trip and clarified the factors that promote students’ knowledge diffusion from the viewpoint of network externalities. A questionnaire was distributed, and responses from 1950 high school students were collected. This study used factor analysis to unveil the factors related to students’ features and field trip experiences and clarified how these factors promote driving network externalities and expanding the network through regression analysis. The findings indicated that the experiential value obtained from visiting a site with actual social problems has a large positive effect on driving network externalities and expanding the network. Therefore, encouraging driving network externalities and expanding networks by providing ESD on a field trip can contribute to solve social problems and achieve sustainable development.

Providing regular access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food for a growing population without depleting natural resources is one of the key challenges of the twenty-first century. Universities can play an important role in educating future decisions-makers to be able to design sustainable food value chains (FVCs) that contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the UN Agenda 2030. We present the ‘Geography of Food’ educational programme as an example for sustainability education through intercultural exchange. The programme not only focusses on knowledge transfer and participatory problem-solving approaches, but also acknowledges the importance of international exchange to facilitate joint learning and experience capitalization. For this purpose, the programme has been realized as a blended learning course including e-learning, individual case studies and an international summer school. Each year, the summer school took place at one of the three participating universities in India, Slovenia and Switzerland and was dedicated to one specific SDG with special relevance to the food system. From 2017 to 2019, a total of 87 students from 20 different countries participated in the programme. The evaluation showed that participants highly appreciated the e-learning course and the programme of the study period. The opportunity for international and intercultural exchange during the study week period was especially highlighted. The blended learning course design therefore proved to be very suitable. However, room for improvement could still be identified. Opportunities may arise from (i) a better integration of students’ backgrounds into the programme to benefit more from their interdisciplinarity, (ii) more directly addressing cultural differences to improve cross-cultural education and (iii) a more methodological problem-solving approach to find more creative and elaborated solutions.

The current wireless communication is experiencing rising data rate demands, extremely low latency, and efficient connections in a wide range of applications, which leads to a viable migration from the fifth-generation (5G) communication system to the sixth-generation (6G) system. The paper explores the potential of 6G networks to enhance the speed of data transfer through an analysis of Multi-Input Multi-Output (MIMO), Millimeter Wave (mmWave), and Artificial Intelligence (AI). Massive MIMO increases spectral efficiency with the use of massive arrays of antennas. Using high frequencies that have a large bandwidth, mmWave communication provides speedier communication. Even so, mmWave has to deal with issues due to path loss and blockage of the signal. These will be dealt with using beamforming and AI. In this research work, these limitations are overcome by integrating Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) using a Deep Q-Network (DQN), Tools for dynamic management of network resources, to better predict traffic and optimize real-time network slicing. When these technologies work together, the combination will significantly improve networks in 6G networks applications for autonomous systems, immersive virtual and augmented reality, holographic communication, etc. This is done in a hybrid setting where MATLAB/Simulink is used to analyze Massive MIMO and beamforming analysis, and the NS-3 tool is used for the mmWave module to evaluate end-to-end 6G network performance. The outcomes confirm that the proposed 6G framework has a 35 to 40 percent increase in spectral efficiency, and 25-30% decrease in end-to-end latency as compared to a 5G communication system. The results demonstrate that Massive MIMO, mmWave, and DQN-based optimization can be jointly applied to provide a robust architecture that can support new 6G applications, including autonomous vehicles, immersive extended reality, and holographic communications. The research presents the improvements in terms of performance, defines the barriers to the implementation, and suggests the possible solutions, which are a valuable input in the design of intelligent and future-wise wireless networks.

In 2015, world leaders gathered at the United Nations (UN) to adopt 17 Sustainable Development Goals to achieve several extraordinary things by 2030. Among these 17 goals of sustainable development, ‘Quality Education' has been recognized as the fourth most important thing in order to transform our world. Obtaining a quality education is the foundation to improving people's lives and sustainable development. India, which is now one of the fastest growing economies of the world, is continuously thriving to transform and facilitate quality education for all, irrespective of the gender, caste, and socio-economic status to leverage county's demographic dividend. Such initiatives have been helpful in creating and sustaining a knowledge society and economy where people learn and build their capabilities to add value through knowledge development, improvement, and innovation. The efforts taken by India to improve the creation, storage, and dissemination of knowledge have helped her to build human capital and face the challenges of dynamic and ambiguous environment. This chapter discusses critical activities contributing to the desired change, highlights prevailing structural and socio-economic issues, and in the course of the analysis identifies some critical areas for improvement.

In the contemporary world, with its high technologies, constantly developing and improving production processes and globalization, the issue of sustainable development is present in the agenda of the whole world. Moreover, the international business in all its variety of forms and operations, is an integral part of the economic life of each country. It contributes to the increase of the gross domestic product of developed countries and for the economic progress of developing countries. In this context, what becomes important is not only achieving economic growth, but also the ways it is achieved. That’s where the concept of sustainable development comes. The ideas of sustainable development, getting economic growth with care for the environment, reaching higher living standard while protecting the natural resources are extremely popular at the beginning of this century, when environmental disasters and economic crises caused by the scarcity of certain resources are a reality and are not limited to one specific country but affect the whole world. These problems inevitably lead to changes in the economic life, as it has to respond to the need of finding a new approach to achieve economic prosperity. Such changes in the economic and social life, for example, are the emergence of new economic sectors such as eco-manufacturing, bio-products, provision of environmental services, changes in some state policies such as initiating green procurement, green public-private partnership, green supply chains etc. This article is dedicated to revealing some of these changes which result from the current trend for sustainable economic development.

The article considers the features of the paradigm of technological renewal of enterprises and changes in its conceptual framework in the context of sustainable development, identifies the theoretical foundations and sequence of its formation. It has been proven that sustainable economic development is recognized today as one of the most difficult tasks that need to be solved by the world community. In such conditions, there is a need to introduce into the practice of management of scientifically sound methods and technologies of enterprise management. For this purpose, technological update is considered as a system category. It is determined that technological renewal is the result of external influences and a consequence of self-development of the production and management system of enterprises. It is revealed that the change of technological ways and the new technological revolution require new tools of theoretical substantiation of technological renewal, as well as a new paradigm of development not only in the field of science and technology, but also in the social sphere. It is theoretically substantiated that the modern paradigm of technological renewal of enterprises cannot be unchanged. There is a constant movement of ideas for its improvement and transformation in accordance with changes in the economic theoretical basis and management practice. It is proved that the resource depletion of the planet needs to accelerate progress in solving the urgent problem of updating the paradigms of the most important areas of activity: economics, management, entrepreneurship, higher education. It is established that the spread of new technologies on a global scale is one of the most important and leading trends in the era of modern development, important for the formation of economic policy. Therefore, the formation of a new paradigm of its technological renewal is crucial for the company, because, according to world experience, a significant increase in socio-economic parameters has reached those businesses that actively implement scientific advances, high technology and innovation in all areas. The key factors and problematic aspects that need immediate solution to ensure sustainable development of socio-economic systems are identified.

IntroductionAntimicrobial stewardship (AMS) education and interprofessional collaboration are integral to the success of a stewardship programme. An interactive interprofessional AMS workshop, designed to encourage workplace interprofessional collaboration was piloted in a tertiary hospital.ObjectivesTo obtain feedback to determine the suitability and sustainability of the AMS workshop.MethodsFeedback was elicited through a predesigned questionnaire containing both open-ended and closed questions on the content and structure of the workshop.ResultsThe survey had a 70% (n = 16) overall response rate. All participants agreed that the goals of the workshop were met and that the knowledge and skills gained from the workshop would help them in their AMS roles. All participants indicated that the workshop content, and the level at which it was pitched, met their expectations and that it had improved their knowledge and skills. All agreed that they found it advantageous and enjoyed learning as an interprofessional group. Open feedback showed that the workshop was found to be useful and would potentially result in improved patient care, dissemination of knowledge, improved teamwork and organizational culture.ConclusionsThe positive feedback and changes made following the workshop demonstrated that a targeted AMS educational workshop adds value to an antimicrobial stewardship programme.

Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) Process towards the Sustainable Design and Construction of Computer, Communication, Network Engineering, Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence Systems

The article examines the conceptual principles of strategic development of enterprises in the conditions of the formation of Industry 5.0. Industry 5.0 is the next stage of industrial development, which combines the achievements of the fourth industrial revolution with human-centered, stable, and sustainable principles. The main challenge for enterprises is a harmonious combination of technological innovations and socio-economic needs. The study’s relevance is determined by the need for enterprises to adapt to new conditions dictated by the emergence of Industry 5.0. Traditional approaches to strategic development are losing their effectiveness in today’s digital transformation, intelligent automation, and a human-centric approach. In this connection, there is a need for new approaches to the strategic development of enterprises. The main challenges and opportunities facing modern enterprises in the context of digital transformation, intelligent automation, and a human-centric approach have been identified. The key directions of forming enterprise development strategies, which are based on sustainable development, innovation, and adaptability principles, are substantiated. A strategic management model that considers the synergy of technological innovations and socio-economic factors is proposed. The emergence of Industry 5.0 requires enterprises to adopt new approaches to strategic management focused on the synergy of technological progress, social responsibility, and sustainable development. Successful enterprises of the future will be those that can respond flexibly to challenges, effectively integrate digital technologies, and create value for society. The study’s results indicate that enterprises’ strategic development in Industry 5.0 should be based on integrating digital technologies, adaptive management, and orientation towards sustainable development. The proposed management model allows enterprises to increase work efficiency, ensure competitive advantages, and adapt to changes in the external environment. It is recommended that enterprises intensify investments in digitization, develop personnel potential in high technologies, and use analytical tools to monitor strategic development. Sustainable construction management has become an important issue in this modern era due to limited natural resources, climate change and environmental problems. One construction sector that has great potential for implementing sustainable development principles is boarding houses. The demand for affordable and comfortable boarding houses continues to increase along with population growth and urbanization. However, unsustainable boarding house construction can have a negative impact on the environment and public health. Socialization of the sustainable construction management budget for the Mekarsari boarding house construction project through community service aims to introduce sustainable practices to relevant stakeholders. In the implementation method, identifying weaknesses, training, community formation, evaluation, and knowledge dissemination are key steps. The results of this community service include increasing the knowledge of project partners, forming a community that cares about sustainable development, and implementing sustainable practices in boarding house construction projects. Even though there are challenges, such as paradigm changes and regulatory complexity, this community service has great potential to become an inspiring example in the construction industry. The importance of continuing support for sustainable practices, increasing knowledge dissemination, realizing regulations, integrating technological innovation, and promoting cross-sector collaboration. By following these suggestions, this project can have a greater impact in driving positive change in the construction industry towards more sustainable development.
