Geospatial digital rights management
The MPEG-21 Multimedia Framework provides for controlled distribution of multimedia works through its Intellectual Property Management and Protection (IPMP) Components and Rights Expression Language (MPEG REL). The IPMP Components provide a framework by which the components of an MPEG-21 digital item can be protected from undesired access, while MPEG REL provides a mechanism for describing the conditions under which a component of a digital item may be used and distributed. This chapter describes how the IPMP Components and MPEG REL were used to implement a series of digital rights management applications at the Cooperative Research Centre for Smart Internet Technology in Australia. While the IPMP Components and MPEG REL were initially designed to facilitate the protection of copyright, the applications also show how the technology can be adapted to the protection of private personal information and sensitive corporate information.

Digital rights management of multimedia
Owing to the proliferation of digitized media applications, such as e-Book, streaming videos, web images, shared music, etc., there is a growing need to protect the intellectual property rights of digital media and prevent illegal copying and falsification. This explains the strong demand for digital rights management (DRM), which is an access control technology that protects and enforces the rights associated with the use of digital content, such as multimedia data. The most important functions of DRM are to prevent unauthorized access and the creation of unauthorized copies of digital content, and moreover to provide a mechanism by which copies can be detected and traced (content tracking). Digital rights management is the most critical component of the intellectual property management and protection (IPMP) protocol widely promoted in the MPEG standards. Under the IPMP's scope, intellectual property (IP) is anything whose use owes the inventors or the owners some form of compensation. This could be a particular media application or it could be the technology used by the media. The management of IP involves storage and serving, appropriate authorization of use, and correct billing and tracking. The protection of IP prevents unauthorized use or misuse of the IP and can make legitimate use easy. According to [1], an effective DRM system should have the following four requirements. (1) The DRM system must package the content to be protected in a secure manner. (2) The DRM system must obtain the access conditions (license) specified by the owner of the protected content. (3) The DRM system must determine whether the access conditions have been fulfilled […]

Digital asset managers need to track and act on the rights attached to digital assets. Rights expression languages (RELs) can help manage rights by capturing terms in a machine-readable format that can be exchanged between information systems. Although RELs vary widely in their syntax and complexity, they share common concepts that provide a framework for understanding and assessing each language. This paper discusses the concepts that underlie RELs and examines four specific languages to show how these concepts have been used in practice. The RELs examined are: Creative Commons Rights Expression Language (ccREL); Picture Licensing Universal System (PLUS); Motion Picture Experts Group, Standard 21, Part 5 (MPEG-21/5); and Open Digital Rights Language (ODRL).

Steganography, the art of hiding secrete messages inside other messages, innocuous wrapper, as until recently had been the poor cousin of cryptography, to communicate privately in an open channel. This area of study got widespread popularity after its alleged use by many extremist groups while hatching and executing their plans remotely. Because of this, in the recent past, many law enforcement and government agencies have also shown keen interest in it. There are many other reasons like Digital Rights Management applications (Watermarking and Finger Printing), which acted as catalyst too. This paper proposes a new steganographic encoding scheme which separates the colour channels of the windows bitmap images and then hides messages Randomly using polynomials in the LSB of one colour component of a chosen pixel where the colour components of the other two are found to be equal to the key selected.

The simplicity of material reproduction and distribution has made protecting intellectual property rights more and more difficult in the digital age. By means of access and use control, Digital Rights Management (DRM) systems have become increasingly important in protecting copyrighted material. Studies indicate that DRM especially in the music and publishing sectors discourages illegal use and supports monetisation strategies for digital media. DRM, on the other hand, sometimes creates compromises that can lower user happiness and even promote piracy as a kind of resistance by restricting consumer rights and interoperability problems. New studies underlined the need of a balanced DRM strategy combining legal, technical, and economic elements while honouring fair use and user autonomy. Advances in blockchain and smart contracts are also being investigated as decentralised substitutes for conventional DRM systems, promising possible enhancements in rights enforcement and openness. The ease with which material may be reproduced and disseminated in the digital age has made intellectual property rights protection more difficult. Systems for digital rights management, or DRM, have become essential for protecting intellectual material by limiting access and use. DRM successfully discourages unauthorised usage and promotes digital media monetisation models, according to research, especially in the publishing and music sectors. DRM frequently brings trade-offs, though, such restricted consumer rights and interoperability problems, which can lower user pleasure and occasionally incite piracy as a form of resistance. A balanced DRM strategy that incorporates legal, technological, and economic tactics while upholding fair usage and user liberty is crucial, according to recent study. As decentralised alternatives to conventional DRM systems, developments in blockchain technology and smart contracts are also being investigated since they may enhance rights enforcement and transparency.

The development of cloud computing technology and smart devices have increasingly been expanding the influence in various fields. Although DRM(Digital Rights Management) is a very important technology for secure content services, interoperability among DRM technologies must be addressed in order to provide the service without the constraints of time and place on various smart devices. In this paper, we study DRM Cloud which provides DRM functions as a service in cloud computing environment, and address interoperability problem by providing different DRM technologies as a cloud service. That is, when a user wants to play contents with the different DRM technologies on a smart device, the usage of the content is controlled by providing the corresponding DRM module and function as SaaS from DRM cloud. To do this, we define the functions and structure of DRM Proxy which performs smooth service call and provision between DRM cloud user and DRM cloud, and finally we describe the experimental implementation result.

The purpose of the study. The article discusses issues related to the specifics of the use of digital intellectual property rights in industry. In accordance with this, the purpose of the article is to identify digital rights to the results of intellectual activity (RID) and/or their use and substantiate the directions of their application by industrial companies. To achieve this goal, the following tasks have been set and solved: - the types of digital rights to READ and/or their use are defined; - the advantages of digital REED rights in comparison with traditional licensing are shown; - the directions of application of digital REED rights in industry are indicated; - the economic and social effects of the application of digital REED rights and/or their use for industrial companies are shown. Conclusions. In Russian legislation, it is possible to use digital rights in the form of utilitarian or hybrid digital rights that differ from each other in functionality, legal status, technological essence, risk level for the investor, and other characteristics. Digital READ rights have advantages over traditional licensing by reducing bureaucratic procedures, ensuring transparency and security of transactions, and speeding up the turnover of READ rights. In practice, USPS and PPP are most often implemented on the basis of distributed ledger technology and involve the use of tokens and smart contracts with different technological essence, functionality and flexibility. They can be used in different industries and for different purposes, providing industrial companies with legal protection of intellectual developments, facilitating technology transfer and licensing, which will contribute to the digital transformation of production and achieve the economic and social effects described in the article.
Read moreBlockchain-Enabled Copyright Protection for Digital Artists
The unprecedented growth of digital art in the contemporary creative economy has empowered artists to reach global audiences, yet it has simultaneously amplified threats of copyright infringement, piracy, and unauthorized duplication. Traditional intellectual property frameworks, while legally robust, are often ill-suited to address the speed, borderless nature, and technological complexity of digital content circulation. Blockchain technology emerges as a transformative paradigm, introducing decentralized and tamper-proof mechanisms for digital rights management. Through non-fungible tokens (NFTs), smart contracts, and immutable ledgers, blockchain provides verifiable proof of authorship, facilitates transparent provenance tracking, and automates royalty distribution without reliance on intermediaries. This manuscript critically examines the role of blockchain in strengthening copyright protection for digital artists by combining an extensive review of existing literature with statistical survey data drawn from practicing artists across multiple regions. Findings reveal that while blockchain adoption is gaining momentum, barriers such as regulatory uncertainty, high transaction costs, energy inefficiency, and limited user literacy constrain large-scale implementation. The study demonstrates that blockchain can enhance creative autonomy, ensure fair economic participation, and foster trust in digital art ecosystems, but its success depends on legal integration, sustainable infrastructure, and artist-centered governance. This research contributes to the discourse by offering a multi-layered framework for blockchain-enabled copyright systems, bridging technological innovation with socio-legal realities, and outlining directions for future policy and research in intellectual property protection.

Within the “Industrie 4.0” approach, 3D printing technology is characterized as one of the disruptive innovations. Conventional supply chains are replaced by value-added networks. The spatially distributed development of printed components, e.g. for the rapid delivery of spare parts, creates a new challenge when differentiating between “original part”, “copy” or “counterfeit” becomes necessary. This is especially true for safety-critical products. Based on these changes classicly branded products adopt the characteristics of licensing models as we know them in the areas of software and digital media. This paper describes the use of digital rights management as a key technology for the successful transition to Additive Manufacturing methods and a key for its commercial implementation and the prevention of intellectual property theft. Risks will be identified along the process chain and solution concepts are presented. These are currently being developed by an 8-partner project named SAMPL (Secure Additive Manufacturing Platform).

: Software piracy has been major issue for software industries. Piracy has become so prevalent over the Internet that poses a major threat to software product companies. With the help of malicious codes and programs, hackers or an intruder can gain access to Software the system and steal the information. Piracy by users is generally believed to harm both software firms(through lower profits) and buying customers (through higher prices). This project is intended to maintain software piracy protection and assures that it is being accessed only by the authenticated users . Software piracy continues to be a significant challenge for developers, with billions of dollars lost annually due to unauthorized distribution and use of copyrighted software. This abstract proposes a comprehensive overview of strategies and innovations aimed at combating software piracy and safeguarding intellectual property rights. The abstract begins by delineating the various forms of software piracy prevalent in today’s digital landscape, including illegal downloads, counterfeit distribution, and unauthorized copying. It highlights the economic ramifications for developers, ranging from revenue loss to diminished innovation incentives. Subsequently, the abstract surveys existing piracy protection measures, such as license key activation, digital rights management (DRM) systems, and encryption techniques. While effective to a certain extent, these traditional methods often face circumvention by sophisticated hackers and crackers. Rights Expression Languages
Rights expression languages (RELs) form a central component of digital rights management (DRM) systems. The process of development of RELs transforms the rights requirements to a formal language ready to be used in DRM systems. Decisions regarding the design of the conceptual model, syntax, semantics, and other such properties of the language, affect not only each other, but also the integration of the language in DRM systems, and the design of DRM system as a whole. This chapter provides a detailed analysis of each step of this process and the tradeoffs involved that not only affect the properties of the REL, but also the DRM system using that REL.

The digital content distribution businesses satisfy people's requirements for the rich and colorful digital content and also promote the user experience. These businesses also make an increasing profit for content makers, content providers and network carrier, and will be a critical position in the future business value chain. However, copyright piracy still doesn't solve very well and results in great loss for content providers. The digital content has the characteristics of easy copy and distribution, therefore, digital rights management has been the key technology to protect intellectual property of digital contents, control their dissemination and usage in digital content Web issue. First, synthetically analyze the disadvantages of typical digital rights management framework. Second, given a series of the problems in the modern system, digital rights management system based on smart card is proposed. Making use of the characteristic of smart card itself, the new framework will be mobile, secure and off-line. Following this, a set of digital management protocols are designed, including license acquisition protocol, usage, update protocol and authentication. The new system's framework, module structure, system design and realization are described. At last, the new system's characteristic is analyzed and is proved to be secure and efficiency.
