An efficient Concealed Information Test: EEG feature extraction and ensemble classification for lie identification
EEG-based lie detectors have become popular over polygraphs because it cannot be controlled by human intentions. Various studies have performed “Guilty Knowledge Test” or “Concealed Information Test” by creating a mock crime scenario to identify changes in brain potential. In this study, an individual’s behavior during lying is analyzed and a new scenario is developed for “Concealed Information Test.” This work involves a mock crime scenario using an EEG acquisition device for 10 participants. Data acquisition has been performed by placing 16 electrodes on the subjects’ scalp. For this experiment, the subject has to recognize faces of some known and unknown personalities among 10 images flashed. These images behave as stimulus for the subject which generate corresponding brain responses. Various feature extraction approaches such as statistical, time domain, frequency domain and time–frequency domain are applied to the 16- channel EEG data. For classifying a subject as guilty or innocent, five classifiers have been applied on subject-wise EEG data. Moreover, the classifiers’ ranking is considered based on the performance of classifiers. An ensemble framework is developed by aggregating the results of the best three classifiers out of the tested five classifiers. The classifiers’ results are aggregated using a weighted voting approach and have been compared with popular conventional approaches using various classification performance measures. Results present a comparative performance of different feature extraction approaches and classifiers using subject-wise single-trial EEG data. The wavelet approach performs better for EEG data of most of the subjects. A comparison between base classifiers and ensemble framework is provided with the ensemble approach outperforming over the base classifiers. Further proposed framework is compared with some existing approaches, and a highest accuracy of 92.4% has been achieved.
Read moreA Derivative-Based Approach for QT-Segment Feature Extraction in Digitized ECG Record
Automatic electrocardiogram analysis using different signal processing technique is one of the prominent areas of research in biomedical engineering. This paper illustrates a simple approach for time plane feature extraction in the QT segment. At first, the R peaks are accurately determined using a simple derivative-based approach and hence heart rate is calculated. Next, the baseline points of all cardiac cycles in the dataset are determined in the TP segment and the baseline modulation in the signal is eliminated by an empirical formula. Finally, the characteristic points Q, Q-offset, S, S-offset, T-onset, T and T-offset are calculated for all cycles using a magnitude and slope threshold based method. Hence, QRS width, ST segment, QT segment and (QT) c are determined. ECG data for 30 second interval from MIT-PTB diagnostic database is used for testing the algorithm.
Read moreAn Effective Approach for Automatic River Features Extraction Using High-Resolution UAV Imagery
The effects of climate change are causing an increase in the frequency and extent of natural disasters. Because of their morphological characteristics, rivers can cause major flooding events. Indeed, they can be subjected to variations in discharge in response to heavy rainfall and riverbank failures. Among the emerging methodologies that address the monitoring of river flooding, those that include the combination of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) and photogrammetric techniques (i.e., Structure from Motion-SfM) ensure the high-frequency acquisition of high-resolution spatial data over wide areas and so the generation of orthomosaics, useful for automatic feature extraction. Trainable Weka Segmentation (TWS) is an automatic feature extraction open-source tool. It was developed to primarily fulfill supervised classification purposes of biological microscope images, but its usefulness has been demonstrated in several image pipelines. At the same time, there is a significant lack of published studies on the applicability of TWS with the identification of a universal and efficient combination of machine learning classifiers and segmentation approach, in particular with respect to classifying UAV images of riverine environments. In this perspective, we present a study comparing the accuracy of nine combinations, classifier plus image segmentation filter, using TWS, also with respect to human photo-interpretation, in order to identify an effective supervised approach for automatic river features extraction from UAV multi-temporal orthomosaics. The results, which are very close to human interpretation, indicate that the proposed approach could prove to be a valuable tool to support and improve the hydro-geomorphological and flooding hazard assessments in riverine environments.

The Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCC) feature extraction method is a leading approach for speech feature extraction and current research aims to identify performance enhancements. One of the recent MFCC implementations is the Delta-Delta MFCC, which improves speaker verification. In this paper, a new MFCC feature extraction method based on distributed Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT-II) is presented. Speaker verification tests are proposed based on three different feature extraction methods including: conventional MFCC, Delta-Delta MFCC and distributed DCT-II based Delta-Delta MFCC with a Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) classifier.
Read moreA new approach for EEG feature extraction for detecting error-related potentials
Error-related negativity (ERN) is one of the electroencephalographical (EEG) traces related to the subject perception of erroneous responses. Methods for detecting the ERN from EEG signals have been widely investigated. Many known techniques use the ERN component of event-related potentials (ERP) by extracting relevant features and feeding those features to a classifier. In these approaches, feature extraction becomes the key point. In this paper, we used the t-CWT method which was based on the continuous wavelet transform (CWT) and Student's t-test for extracting ERN features. In the experiment, EEG was recorded from 5 electrode sites (Fz, FC1, Cz, FCz and FC2) during a sustianed attention experiment in 10 subjects. We used a support vector machine for classification. In addition, the algorithm provides fully automated detection and quantification methods for extracting the most discrimantive? ERP components between two cognitive states and are particular suitable for classifying single-trial ERPs. The features extracted by the algorithm can be interpreted in terms of signal characteristics that are contributing to the efficiency of classification, giving a new method for brain activity investigation.
Read moreAn approach for feature extraction using spline approximation for Indian characters (SAIC) in recognition engines
Optical character recognition for printed Indian text is a classical problem because of round nature of these characters and presence of ldquomaatrasrdquo. Recognition accuracy of optical character recognition engines depends heavily upon correct representation of characters obtained by feature extraction method. Thus feature extraction is heart of recognition engines. We propose a novel spline approximation based method for feature extraction in recognition engines. The spline approximation is implemented for Indian characters and the results obtained are very encouraging as compared to existing feature extraction methods.
Read moreA review in feature extraction approach in question classification using Support Vector Machine
Text classification which is an integral part of text mining has caught much attention in various industries and fields recently. The ability is in assigning text documents to one or more pre-defined categories based on content similarity. While most of application of text classification focuses on document level, question classification works at much granular level such as sentence and phrase. There have been numerous studies on question classification in accordance to Bloom taxonomy in assessments to measure cognitive level of learners in higher learning institutions. But it has not been effective yet to resolve overlapping issue of Bloom taxonomy verb keywords being assigned to more than one category of Bloom taxonomy. The presence of this poses a problem in respect of classifying a particular question into a right category of Bloom taxonomy. And feature extraction plays an important role in improving the accuracy of classifier such as Support Vector Machine in question classification. Much of the past related research work focus on feature extraction methods such as bag of word (BOW) and syntactic analysis to classify questions and to address the issue, an improvement in feature extraction is needed. In view of this, this study proposes an integrated approach in feature extraction involving semantic aspect in classifying questions in accordance to Bloom taxonomy. Support Vector Machine classifier is used as it is well known for its high accuracy in text classification. With all this in place, an improved accuracy in classifying questions in accordance to Bloom taxonomy can be expected.
Read moreA Simulated Annealing Feature Extraction approach for hyperspectral images
In this paper, a novel study is proposed for the feature extraction of high volumes of remote sensing images by using a simulated annealing feature extraction (SAFE) approach. For hyperspectral imagery, complete modular eigenspace (CME) has been developed by clustering highly correlated hyperspectral bands into a smaller subset of band modular based on greedy algorithm. Instead of greedy paradigm as adopted in CME approach, this paper introduces a simulated annealing (SA) approach for hyperspectral imagery. It presents a framework which consists of three algorithms, referred to as SAFE, CME and the feature scale uniformity transformation (FSUT). SAFE selects the sets of non-correlated hyperspectral bands based on SA algorithm while utilizing the inherent separability of different classes in hyperspectral images to reduce dimensionality and further to effectively generate a unique CME feature. The proposed SA features avoids the bias problems of transforming the information into linear combinations of bands as does the traditional principal components analysis and provides a fast procedure to simultaneously select the most significant features according to a scheme of SA. The experimental results show that the SAFE approach is effective and can be used as an alternative to the existing feature extraction algorithms.

The most frequently utilized BCI paradigms at the time are motor imagination (MI) BCI. In the procedure of MI-BCI, one of the most important roles is the feature extraction of EEG signals. This article examines various feature extraction approaches in four distinct domains: time, frequency, time-frequency, and spatial. Various approaches are introduced in each domain, including the ERD/ERS computation, the FFT method, the Wavelet Transform (WT), the Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT), Common Spatial Patterns (CSP), and Sub-band Common Spatial Patterns (SBCSP). This paper also compares the advantages and disadvantages of different methods in practical application, which can provide reference for future research.
Read moreClassification of Heart Disease Using MFO Based Neural Network on MRI Images.
Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) is one of the primary diseases that causes death every year. An approximation of roughly about 17.5 million people dies due to CVD, signifying about 31% of global deaths. Based on the statistics, every 34 seconds, a person dies due to heart disease. Various classification algorithms have been developed and utilized as classifiers to support doctors who are ineffectually diagnosed with heart disease. The main aim of this work is to improve the performance of the heart disease approach using image processing algorithm. To improve the effectiveness and efficiency of classification performance for heart disease diagnosis, an optimized neural network was proposed based on the feature extraction and selection approach for handling features. The objective of this investigation is to diagnose heart diseases using feature extraction, reduction based classification and image processing methods. The proposed model comprises of two subsets: Feature extraction using gray scale properties and Moth flame optimization (MFO) for effectual feature selection, followed by a classification technique using Generalized Regression Neural Network. The first system includes three stages: (i) Pre-processing of the dataset (ii) feature extraction (iii) performing MFO for efficient selection. In the second method, GRNN is proposed. The heart data set obtained from ACDC Challenge, was utilized for performing the computation. The image obtained from the MRI-scanner is in the NIfTI image format. The pre-process step used in this is to convert the image type from INT16 to uint8 to improve the quality of image viewing and for feature extraction process. In this phase, the texture properties from the pre-processed image are calculated and the value is in the numeric format. These values are the feature attributes of the dataset. The feature attributes of the image are given as input for the moth flame optimization process and output is the feature selected from the optimization process. The whole process is performed on the feature attributes of the image by determining the optimal feature for the classifier by reducing its error rate. The optimal feature from the moth flame optimization is used for training and testing the network. The classifier used in this approach is a single neural network classifier with a regression nature. Due to the regression property, the network is well trained with the feature. The Generalized regression neural network is used for classifying heart diseases. The proposed method achieves the accuracy of 96.23%, sensitivity of 95.41% and specificity of 96.75%. These values are calculated based on the confusion matrix of the classifier. In this, the feature extraction using the gray scale properties plays an important role to determine the feature attributes from the MRI heart images. The Moth flame optimization able to produce an accuracy of 97.23% using GRNN for classification with minimum single attribute mean of the image. It also outperformed the other methods, either the feature extraction based classification or the feature reduction based classification.
Read moreNovel Two-Dimensional Singular Spectrum Analysis for Effective Feature Extraction and Data Classification in Hyperspectral Imaging
Feature extraction is of high importance for effective data classification in hyperspectral imaging (HSI). Considering the high correlation among band images, spectral-domain feature extraction is widely employed. For effective spatial information extraction, a 2-D extension to singular spectrum analysis (2D-SSA), which is a recent technique for generic data mining and temporal signal analysis, is proposed. With 2D-SSA applied to HSI, each band image is decomposed into varying trends, oscillations, and noise. Using the trend and the selected oscillations as features, the reconstructed signal, with noise highly suppressed, becomes more robust and effective for data classification. Three publicly available data sets for HSI remote sensing data classification are used in our experiments. Comprehensive results using a support vector machine classifier have quantitatively evaluated the efficacy of the proposed approach. Benchmarked with several state-of-the-art methods including 2-D empirical mode decomposition (2D-EMD), it is found that our proposed 2D-SSA approach generates the best results in most cases. Unlike 2D-EMD that requires sequential transforms to obtain detailed decomposition, 2D-SSA extracts all components simultaneously. As a result, the execution time in feature extraction can be also dramatically reduced. The superiority in terms of enhanced discrimination ability from 2D-SSA is further validated when a relatively weak classifier, i.e., the k-nearest neighbor, is used for data classification. In addition, the combination of 2D-SSA with 1-D principal component analysis (2D-SSA-PCA) has generated the best results among several other approaches, demonstrating the great potential in combining 2D-SSA with other approaches for effective spatial-spectral feature extraction and dimension reduction in HSI.
Read moreAttributed grammars in hypnogram analysis
The hypnogram is a schematic representation of sleep dynamics as a sequence of stages along the night. The authors have shown, in previous work, the adequacy of syntactic modeling in automatic sleep analysis. According to this approach, the hypnogram is viewed as expression of a language whose temporal organization is described by stochastic context-free grammars. Here, the authors propose a hybrid model combining syntactic and semantic information, where stage duration is taken into account in terms of attributed grammars. This model enables hypnogram simulation, by means of language generation, and provides improvement in classification accuracy. The method is applied in automatic hypnogram analysis of a control group and a population of dysthymic patients.
Read moreNormalization-Cooperated Gradient Feature Extraction for Handwritten Character Recognition
The gradient direction histogram feature has shown superior performance in character recognition. To alleviate the effect of stroke direction distortion caused by shape normalization and provide higher recognition accuracies, we propose a new feature extraction approach, called normalization-cooperated gradient feature (NCGF) extraction, which maps the gradient direction elements of original image to direction planes without generating the normalized image and can be combined with various normalization methods. Experiments on handwritten Japanese and Chinese character databases show that, compared to normalization-based gradient feature, the NCGF reduces the recognition error rate by factors ranging from 8.63 percent to 14.97 percent with high confidence of significance when combined with pseudo-two-dimensional normalization.
Read moreA UNIFIED ENERGY APPROACH FOR B-SPLINE SNAKE IN MEDICAL IMAGE SEGMENTATION
The parametric snake is one of the preferred approaches in feature extraction from images because of their simplicity and efficiency. However the method has also limitations. In this paper an explicit snake that represented using BSpline applied for image segmentation is considered. In this paper, we identify some of these problems and propose efficient solutions to get around them. The proposed method is inspired by classical snake from Kass with some adaption for parametric curve. The paper also proposes new definitions of energy terms in the model to bring the snake performance more robust and efficient for image segmentation. This energy term unify the edge based and region based energy derived from the image data. The main objective of developed work is to develop an automatic method to segment the anatomical organs from medical images which is very hard and tedious to be performed manually. After this segmentation, the anatomical object can be further measured and analyzed to diagnose the anomaly in that organ. The results have shown that the proposed method has been proven qualitatively successful in segmenting different types of medical images.
