Requirements Engineering (RE) is a critical process in Software Engineering (SE) activities. RE helps stakeholders to manage requirements appropriately before dedicated requirements are used to design and implement software. The first stage in RE process is known as requirements elicitation whereby during elicitation, stakeholders will perform a set of activities to permit understanding in problem domain for respected scenario and hence proposing a set of established requirements in developing software. In elicitation, stakeholders need to collaborate and communicate in order to produce unambiguous requirements and create mutual agreement for software design and development. This can produce desired solution for all stakeholders. Soft issue is one of non-technical requirements that can associate with social presence, social interaction elements such as comfort, connectedness and motivation. This requirements need to be emphasized during RE process especially for a system that is categorized in Computer- Supported Collaboration Working (CSCW) domain. Users need CSCW domain system to carry out virtual communication, knowledge sharing via system's features. The aim of this paper is to carry out a preliminary study on RE process and requirements elicitation activities by identifying whether soft issues have been engaged in existing requirements elicitation process. Another aim is to compare stakeholders' roles based on selected articles. The method to investigate requirements elicitation process is done by identifying existing elicitation processes as well as involvement of stakeholders' collaboration during elicitation. According to the study, the comparison of existing requirements elicitation processes and comparison of job roles have been produced as a result in this paper.

This paper presents exploratory survey results on Requirements Engineering (RE) practices of some software development companies in Malaysia. The survey attempted to identify patterns of RE practices the companies are implementing. Information required for the survey was obtained through a survey, mailed self-administered questionnaires distributed to project managers and software developers who are working at software development companies operated across the country. The results showed that the overall adoption of the RE practices in these companies is strong. However, the results also indicated that fewer companies in the survey have use appropriate CASE tools or software to support their RE process and practices, define traceability policies and maintain traceability manual in their projects.

This scientific article presents the results of a study focused on the current practices and future prospects of AI-tools usage, specifically large language models (LLMs), in software development (SD) processes within European IT companies. The Pan-European study covers 35 SD teams from all regions of Europe and consists of three sections: the first section explores the current adoption of AI-tools in software production, the second section addresses common challenges in LLMs implementation, and the third section provides a forecast of the tech future in AI-tools development for SD. The study reveals that AI-tools, particularly LLMs, have gained popularity and approbation in European IT companies for tasks related to software design and construction, coding, and software documentation. However, their usage for business and system analysis remains limited. Nevertheless, challenges such as resource constraints and organizational resistance are evident. The article also highlights the potential of AI-tools in the software development process, such as automating routine operations, speeding up work processes, and enhancing software product excellence. Moreover, the research examines the transformation of IT paradigms driven by AI-tools, leading to changes in the skill sets of software developers. Although the impact of LLMs on the software development industry is perceived as modest, experts anticipate significant changes in the next 10 years, including AI-tools integration into advanced IDEs, software project management systems, and product management tools. Ethical concerns about data ownership, information security and legal aspects of AI-tools usage are also discussed, with experts emphasizing the need for legal formalization and regulation in the AI domain. Overall, the study highlights the growing importance and potential of AI-tools in software development, as well as the need for careful consideration of challenges and ethical implications to fully leverage their benefits.

Many papers proposed in the software engineering and information systems literature are dedicated to analysis of software projects missing their schedules, exceeding their budgets, delivering software products with poor quality and in some cases even wrong functionality. The expression “software crisis“ has been coined since the late 60's to illustrate this phenomenon. Various solutions has been proposed by academics and practitioners in order to deal with the software crisis, counter these trends and improve productivity and software quality. Such solutions recommend software process improvement as the best way to build software products needed by modern organizations. Among the well-known solutions, many are based either on software development tools or on software development approaches, methods, processes, and notations. Nevertheless, the scope of these solutions seems to be limited and the improvements they provide are often not significant. We think that since software artifacts are accumulation of knowledge owned by organizational stakeholders, the software crisis is due to a knowledge gap resulting from the discrepancy between the knowledge integrated in software systems and the knowledge owned by organizational actors. In particular, integrating knowledge management in software development process permits reducing the knowledge gap through building software products which reflect at least partly the organization's know-how. In this paper, we propose a framework which provides a definition of knowledge based on information systems architecture and describes a knowledge-oriented software development process to help organizations in reducing the software crisis impacts.

Requirements Engineering (RE) has grown from its humble beginnings to embrace a wide variety of techniques, drawn from many disciplines, and the diversity of tasks currently performed under the label of RE has grown beyond that encom-passed by software development. We briefly review how RE has evolved and observe that RE is now a collection of best practices for pragmatic, outcome-focused critical thinking-A pplicable to any domain. We discuss an alternative perspective on, and de-scription of, the discipline of RE and advocate for the evolution of RE toward a discipline that supports the application of RE prac-tice to any domain. We call upon RE practitioners to proactively engage in alternative domains and call upon researchers that adopt practices from other domains to actively engage with their inspiring domains. For both, we ask that they report upon their experience so that we can continue to expand RE frontiers. © 2017 IEEE.

Requirements Engineering (RE) has established itself as a software engineering discipline during the past decades. While researchers have been investigating the RE discipline with a plethora of empirical studies, attempts to systematically derive an empirically-based theory in context of the RE discipline have just recently been started. However, such a theory is needed if we are to define and motivate guidance in performing high quality RE research and practice. We aim at providing an empirical and valid foundation for a theory of RE, which helps software engineers establish effective and efficient RE processes. We designed a survey instrument and theory that has now been replicated in 10 countries world-wide. We evaluate the propositions of the theory with bootstrapped confidence intervals and derive potential explanations for the propositions. We report on the underlying theory and the full results obtained from the replication studies with participants from 228 organisations. Our results represent a substantial step forward towards developing an empirically-based theory of RE giving insights into current practices with RE processes. The results reveal, for example, that there are no strong differences between organisations in different countries and regions, that interviews, facilitated meetings and prototyping are the most used elicitation techniques, that requirements are often documented textually, that traces between requirements and code or design documents is common, requirements specifications themselves are rarely changed and that requirements engineering (process) improvement endeavours are mostly intrinsically motivated. Our study establishes a theory that can be used as starting point for many further studies for more detailed investigations. Practitioners can use the results as theory-supported guidance on selecting suitable RE methods and techniques.

[Background] Prior research on the professional occupation of Requirements Engineering (RE) in Europe and Latin America indicated incongruities between RE practice as perceived by industry and as in textbooks, and conducted detailed analysis of both RE and non-RE job aspects. Relatively little is published on the RE competencies and skills industry expects, and seldom investigated the application domains calling for RE professionals. [Aims] We felt motivated by those findings to carry out research on RE job posts in a North-American market. Especially, we focused solely on RE-specific tasks, competencies and skills, from the perspective of defined position categories. Plus, we intend to explore the application domains in need for RE professionals to reveal the wide range of RE roles in industry. [Methods] Coding process, analysis, and synthesis were applied to the textual descriptions of the 190 RE job ads from Canada's most popular online job search site, especially to the text referring to tasks and competencies. [Results] We contribute to the empirical analysis of RE jobs, by providing insights from Canada's IT market in 2017. Using 109 RE job ads from the most popular IT job search portal T-Net, we identified the qualifications, experience and skills demanded by Canadian employers. Furthermore, we explored the distribution of those RE tasks and competences over the 11 categories of RE roles. [Conclusions] Our results suggest that the majority of the employers were big to very big companies in 29 business domains, and the most in-demand RE skills for them were related to RE methods and to project management aspects affecting requirements. In addition, employers placed much more emphasis on experience - both RE-specific and broad software engineering experience, than on higher education.

The requirement engineering (RE) practice was implemented without knowing by IT Personnel. This RE framework design purposely to identify the RE practice that implemented during software project requirement in Malaysian Public Sector. We determine the software requirement system (SRS) flow from the initial interview. We have a list of IT Personnel RE practice experience for the software project from the pilot test. We identified the problem arise and the RE practice implemented from the actual survey. The RE practice that identify will validate by the IT expert in Malaysian Public Sector. We plan to developed standards, tools, and methods can help to improve the current practice. Our expectation is the practice that can be as a guideline to IT Personnel using RE practice during software project requirement.

In the requirement engineering phase, the team members work to get the user requirements, comprehend them and specify them for the next process. There are many models for the requirement engineering phase. There is a need to select the best Requirement Engineering model, and integrate it with cloud computing, that can give the best response to the users and software developers and avoid mistakes in the requirement engineering phase. In this study, these models are integrated with the cloud computing domain, and we report on the security considerations of all the selected models. Four requirement engineering process models are selected for this study: the Linear approach, the Macaulay Linear approach, and the Iterative and Spiral models. The focus of this study is to check the security aspects being introduced by the cloud platform and assess the feasibility of these models for the popular cloud environment SaaS. For the classification of the security aspects that affect the performance of these model, a framework is proposed, and we check the results regarding selected security parameters and RE models. By classifying the selected RE models for security aspects based on deep learning techniques, we determine that the Loucopoulos and Karakostas iterative requirements engineering process model performs better than all the other models.

This paper describes empirical research into agile requirements engineering (RE) practices. Based on an analysis of data collected in 16 US software development organizations, we identify six agile practices. We also identify seven challenges that are created by the use of these practices. We further analyse how this collection of practices helps mitigate some, while exacerbating other risks in RE. We provide a framework for evaluating the impact and appropriateness of agile RE practices by relating them to RE risks. Two risks that are intractable by agile RE practices emerge from the analysis. First, problems with customer inability and a lack of concurrence among customers significantly impact agile development. Second, risks associated with the neglecting non‐functional requirements such as security and scalability are a serious concern. Developers should carefully evaluate the risk factors in their project environment to understand whether the benefits of agile RE practices outweigh the costs imposed by the challenges.

The main objective of the paper is to create context sensitive decision support services within flexible Quality Assurance (QA) of software development projects and their resulting products. The new QA process is supported by an Internet solution composed of several knowledge, context sensitive services based on open standards that is able to detect changes in the scope and requirements of an application (or changes in its development process) and provide the adequate set of assessments as a basis for an accurate measurement of the quality of the process and product at any time and allow for effective decision making within QA. The Internet Services monitor the different stages of the software development process, interoperating with the existing applications and systems to provide quantitative information about the quality of each phase (i.e. project management, requirements gathering, functional and technical design, development and testing), the project as a whole and the resulting product. They also monitor context under which the SW is developed and decisions on QA have to be made. Data obtained in real-time by the monitoring services are used in an indistinctive way by software engineers, designers, developers, testers and managers alike for different collaborative decision making. The paper is one of the first attempts to apply context sensitivity to support decision making in QA for SW development. The approach is assessed in 2 different business cases in order to validate the results under different conditions. The first business case belongs to a large software company developing large Internet projects based on Rational Unified Process methodology. The second business case belongs to a SME developing complex projects based on agile methodologies.

This chapter introduces requirements engineering for sociotechnical systems. Requirements engineering for sociotechnical systems is a complex process that considers product demands from a vast number of viewpoints, roles, responsibilities, and objectives. This chapter explains the requirements engineering terminology and describes the requirements engineering process in detail, with examples of available methods for the main process activities. The main activities described include system requirements development, requirements allocation and flow-down, software requirements development, and continuous activities, including requirements documentation, requirements validation and verification, and requirements management. As requirements engineering is the process with the largest impact on the end product, it is recommended to invest more effort in both industrial application as well as research to increase understanding and deployment of the concepts presented in this chapter.

With the rapid increase in complexity and interconnectedness across different industries, the issues linked to requirements engineering are becoming more pressing, significantly affecting costs, timelines, and overall performance. This article outlines current research trends in requirements engineering, focusing on emerging challenges and future pathways. We investigate advancements in RE techniques, methodologies, and tools, assessing their effects on building complex systems. Furthermore, we emphasize the growing significance of stakeholder engagement and agile practices in shaping requirements, highlighting their contributions to improving collaboration and adaptability. By evaluating the present state of practice and pinpointing critical areas of research concern, this article offers a guide for future requirements engineering studies, enabling researchers and practitioners to address the changing needs of software and systems engineering.

Factors such as app stores or platform choices heavily affect functional and non-functional mobile app requirements. We surveyed 45 companies and interviewed ten experts to explore how factors that impact mobile app requirements are understood by requirements engineers in the mobile app industry. We observed the lack of knowledge in several areas. For instance, we observed that all practitioners were aware of data privacy concerns, however, they did not know that certain third-party libraries, usage aggregators, or advertising libraries also occasionally leak sensitive user data. Similarly, certain functional requirements may not be implementable in the absence of a third-party library that is either banned from an app store for policy violations or lacks features, for instance, missing desired features in ARKit library for iOS made practitioners turn to Android. We conclude that requirements engineers should have adequate technical experience with mobile app development as well as sufficient knowledge in areas such as privacy, security and law, in order to make informed decisions during requirements elicitation.
