Efficient generation of triconnected plane triangulations

We extend Whitney's Theorem that every plane triangulation without separating triangles is hamiltonian by allowing some separating triangles. More precisely, we define a decomposition of a plane triangulation G into 4‐connected ‘pieces,’ and show that if each piece shares a triangle with at most three other pieces then G is hamiltonian. We provide an example to show that our hypothesis that each piece shares a triangle with at most three other pieces' cannot be weakened to ‘four other pieces.’ As part of our proof, we also obtain new results on Tutte cycles through specified vertices in planar graphs. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The graph theoretic facility layout problem (GTFLP) seeks the best spatial arrangement of a set of facilities, which minimizes the total transportation cost of material flow between facilities, or maximizes total facility adjacency benefits. The GTFLP has applications in arranging rooms within a building floorplan, placing machines on a factory floor, controls on an instrument panel, or components on a circuit board. For this reason, the GTFLP is an important problem within industrial design. The GTFLP comprises two phases: the generation of a highly weighted maximal planar graph (MPG), whose edges specify adjacencies required in the layout, and the drawing of an orthogonal geometric dual to this MPG, called the block plan, under given area requirements for each facility. The first phase is NP-complete, and has been researched extensively; in the absence of a polynomial time algorithm, it appears there is little future for further research in this area. The second phase however has received far less attention due to the difficulties in not only determining algorithms for generating layouts, but also the hurdles encountered in automating these methods. This paper presents a new approach to finding a block plan from an arbitrary MPG, with facility area requirements.

A maximal planar graph is a simple planar graph in which every face is a triangle. We show here that such graphs with maximum degree Δ and diameter two have no more than 3/2Δ + 1 vertices. We also show that there exist maximal planar graphs with diameter two and exactly [3/2Δ + 1] vertices.

A straight-line drawing of a plane graph is called an open rectangle-of-influence drawing if there is no vertex in the proper inside of the axis-parallel rectangle defined by the two ends of every edge. In an inner triangulated plane graph, every inner face is a triangle although the outer face is not necessarily a triangle. In this paper, we first obtain a sufficient condition for an inner triangulated plane graph G to have an open rectangle-of-influence drawing; the condition is expressed in terms of a labeling of angles of a subgraph of G. We then present an O(n 1.5/log n)-time algorithm to examine whether G satisfies the condition and, if so, construct an open rectangle-of-influence drawing of G on an (n−1)×(n−1) integer grid, where n is the number of vertices in G.

A graph G on n vertices is called non-universal if its maximum degree is at most $$n-2$$ . In this paper, we give a structural characterization for non-universal maximal planar graphs with diameter two. In precise, we find 10 basic graphs, and then generate all 25 non-universal maximal planar graphs with diameter two by adding repeatedly and appropriately 3-vertices to some of these 10 basic graphs. As an application, we show that maximal planar graphs with diameter two are pancyclic except five special graphs.

The $(\Delta,D)$ (degree/diameter) problem consists of finding the largest possible number of vertices $n$ among all the graphs with maximum degree $\Delta$ and diameter $D$. We consider the $(\Delta,D)$ problem for maximal planar bipartite graphs, that is, simple planar graphs in which every face is a quadrangle. We obtain that for the $(\Delta,2)$ problem, the number of vertices is $n=\Delta+2$; and for the $(\Delta,3)$ problem, $n= 3\Delta-1$ if $\Delta$ is odd and $n= 3\Delta-2$ if $\Delta$ is even. Then, we prove that, for the general case of the $(\Delta,D)$ problem, an upper bound on $n$ is approximately $3(2D+1)(\Delta-2)^{\lfloor D/2\rfloor}$, and another one is $C(\Delta-2)^{\lfloor D/2\rfloor}$ if $\Delta\geq D$ and $C$ is a sufficiently large constant. Our upper bounds improve for our kind of graphs the one given by Fellows, Hell and Seyffarth for general planar graphs. We also give a lower bound on $n$ for maximal planar bipartite graphs, which is approximately $(\Delta-2)^{k}$ if $D=2k$, and $3(\Delta-3)^k$ if $D=2k+1$, for $\Delta$ and $D$ sufficiently large in both cases.

On The Number of Subgraphs of Prescribed Type of Planar Graphs With A Given Number of Vertices

Representations of planar triangulations as contact graphs of a set of internally disjoint homothetic triangles or of a set of internally disjoint homothetic squares have received quite some attention in recent years. In this paper we investigate representations of planar triangulations as contact graphs of a set of internally disjoint homothetic pentagons. Surprisingly such a representation exists for every triangulation whose outer face is a $5$-gon. We relate these representations to five color forests. These combinatorial structures resemble Schnyder woods and transversal structures, respectively. In particular there is a bijection to certain $\alpha$-orientations and consequently a lattice structure on the set of five color forests of a given graph. This lattice structure plays a role in an algorithm that is supposed to compute a contact representation with pentagons for a given graph. Based on a five color forest the algorithm builds a system of linear equations and solves it, if the solution is non-negative, it encodes distances between corners of a pentagon representation. In this case the representation is constructed and the algorithm terminates. Otherwise negative variables guide a change of the five color forest and the procedure is restarted with the new five color forest. Similar algorithms have been proposed for contact representations with homothetic triangles and with squares.

A localized Delaunay triangulation owns the following interesting properties in a wireless ad hoc setting: it can be built with localized information, the communication cost imposed by control information is limited and it supports geographical routing algorithms that offer guaranteed convergence. This paper presents a localized algorithm that builds a graph called planar localized Delaunay triangulation, PLDel, known to be a good spanner of the unit disk graph, UDG. Unlike previous work, our algorithm builds PLDel in a single communication step, maintaining a communication cost of O(n log n), which is within a constant of the optimum. This represents a significant practical improvement over previous algorithms with similar theoretical bounds. Furthermore, the small cost of our algorithm makes feasible to use PLDel in real systems, instead of the Gabriel or the Relative Neighborhood graphs, which are not good spanners of UDG.

A simple algorithm for multicuts in planar graphs with outer terminals

In this paper we give a simple algorithm to generate all connected rooted plane graphs with at most m edges. A "rooted" plane graph is a plane graph with one designated (directed) edge on the outer face. The algorithm uses O(m) space and generates such graphs in O(1) time per graph on average without duplications. The algorithm does not output the entire graph but the difference from the previous graph. By modifying the algorithm we can generate all connected (non-rooted) plane graphs with at most m edges in O(m3) time per graph.

In this paper, we investigate the problem of graph list colouring in the on-line setting. We provide several results on paintability of graphs in the model introduced by Schauz [18] and Zhu [25]. We prove that the on-line version of Ohba’s conjecture is true for the class of planar graphs. We show that the conjecture for partial list colouring on-line holds for several graph classes, namely claw-free graphs, maximal planar graphs, series-parallel graphs, and chordal graphs.

A subset of vertics W and a planer graph G is a face-independent vertex cover (FIVC) if there exists a plane embedding of G such that each boundary contains exactly one vertex from W. In general, verifying if a plane graph admits a VIFC is an NP-complete problem. If G is a maximal planar graph, then the existence of a FIVC in G can be efficiently tested by using the so-called t-paths between odd-degree vertics of G (a t-path is a sequence of adjacent triangles). Also for Halin Graphs (i.e., skirted trees), its FIVC’s can be generated in polynomial time.

Vertex splitting replaces a vertex by two copies and partitions its incident edges amongst the copies. This problem has been studied as a graph editing operation to achieve desired properties with as few splits as possible, most often planarity, for which the problem is $$\textsf{NP}$$ -hard. Here we study how to minimize the number of splits to turn a plane graph into an outerplane one. We tackle this problem by establishing a direct connection between splitting a plane graph to outerplanarity, finding a connected face cover, and finding a feedback vertex set in its dual. We prove $$\textsf{NP}$$ -completeness for plane biconnected graphs, while we show that a polynomial-time algorithm exists for maximal planar graphs. Finally, we provide upper and lower bounds for certain families of maximal planar graphs.

Traditional representations of graphs and their duals suggest that the dual vertices should be placed inside their corresponding primal faces, and the edges of the dual graph should only cross their corresponding primal edges. We consider the problem of simultaneously embedding a planar graph and its dual on a small integer grid such that the edges are drawn as straight-line segments and the only crossings are between primal--dual pairs of edges. We provide an O(n) time algorithm that simultaneously embeds a 3-connected planar graph and its dual on a (2n - 2) × (2n - 2) integer grid, where n is the total number of vertices in the graph and its dual. All the edges are drawn as straight-line segments except for one edge on the outer face, which is drawn using two segments.
