An efficient hybrid sine-cosine Harris hawks optimization for low and high-dimensional feature selection

The damaged areas of brain tissues can be extracted by using segmentation methods, most of which are based on the integration of machine learning and data mining techniques. An important segmentation method is to utilize clustering techniques, especially the fuzzy C-means (FCM) clustering technique, which is sufficiently accurate and not overly sensitive to imaging noise. Therefore, the FCM technique is appropriate for multiple sclerosis diagnosis, although the optimal selection of cluster centers can affect segmentation. They are difficult to select because this is an NP-hard problem. In this study, the Harris Hawks optimization (HHO) algorithm was used for the optimal selection of cluster centers in segmentation and FCM algorithms. The HHO is more accurate than other conventional algorithms such as the genetic algorithm and particle swarm optimization. In the proposed method, every membership matrix is assumed as a hawk or an HHO member. The next step is to generate a population of hawks or membership matrices, the most optimal of which is selected to find the optimal cluster centers to decrease the multiple sclerosis clustering error. According to the tests conducted on a number of brain MRIs, the proposed method outperformed the FCM clustering and other techniques such as the k-NN algorithm, support vector machine, and hybrid data mining methods in accuracy.

The dynamic voltage restorer's (DVR) transient, steady-state, and dynamic responses are essential requirements for protecting sensitive loads against upstream voltage disturbances via the DVR's ride-through capabilities. DVRs also look after transient oscillation at the instant of entering, and /or exiting by the DVR. This paper presents an enhanced, optimized, and less complex DVR control system structure, which is capable of improving the transient, steady-state, and dynamic responses as well as eliminating inherent transient oscillations. The control system comprises a closed-loop feedback control signal and feedforward upstream disturbance detection signal. Incorporating the feedforward term helps, dramatically, in improving the system response and eliminating the transient oscillations in the load voltage. The error signals are adapted using a PI controller to make the load voltage faithfully track its predefined reference waveform. The controller is implemented in the dq synchronous rotating reference frame. The parameters of the PI controller are selected using modern population-based optimization called the Harris Hawks Optimization (HHO) technique. The results obtained using the HHO technique are compared with two other optimization algorithms, namely Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA). The results show that the HHO gives the best system response. The system is simulated using MATLAB/Simulink and the validation via Typhoon HIL402 real-time emulator. Both HIL402 validation and simulation results show that the proposed control scheme recovers normal operation against voltage disturbance within approximately 1.2 milliseconds without overshoot with steady-state error near zero and significantly dampens the inherent voltage oscillation that occurs at the instant of DVR entrance and/or exit.

<span lang="EN-US">One of the primary concerns of governments, corporations, and even individual users is their level of online protection. This is because a large number of attacks target their primary assets. A firewall is a critical tool that almost every organization uses to protect its assets. However, firewalls become less reliable when they deal with large amounts of data. One method for reducing the amount of data and enhancing firewall performance is feature selection. The main aim of this study is to enhance the firewall's performance by proposing a new feature selection method. The proposed feature selection method combines the strengths of Harris Hawks optimization (HHO) and whale optimization algorithm (WOA). Experiments were performed utilizing the NSL-KDD dataset to measure the effectiveness of the proposed method. The experiments employed the decision trees (DTs) as a machine classifier. The experimental results show that the achieved accuracy is 98.46% when using HHO/WOA for feature selection and DT for classification, outperforming the HHO and WOA when used separately for feature selection. The study's findings offer insightful information for researchers and practitioners looking to improve firewall effectiveness and efficiency in defending internet connections against changing threats.</span>

When it comes to improving the performance of a wireless mesh network, the positioning of routers is critical. In order to provide the greatest network accessibility, it is essential that mesh routers be installed in appropriate locations. One way to improve the network’s performance is to increase the coverage while utilizing an optimum number of routers. The network coverage may be optimised using a number of different techniques that have been developed over time in the scientific literature. An algorithm called Harris Hawk’s Optimization (HHO) is being used in this study to optimally locate mesh routers in a mesh network in order to optimise coverage and reduce network congestion. The HHO identifies the best positions to place the routers in order to have the best possible network topology by removing the overlapping routers to minimize the number of routers while keeping the coverage maximized. In this research, 60, and 100 mesh routers are deployed in two different network topologies. The simulation results are analysed and compared with Sine Cosine Algorithm (SCA), Gray Wolf Optimization (GWO) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm. With regard to network coverage and congestion reduction, simulation results show that HHO surpasses the benchmark algorithms by having 98% coverage and 34% reduction in the network size.

Intrusion Detection and Prevention Systems (IDPSs) play a crucial role in safeguarding online connections against unauthorized access and malicious activities. To enable efficient and effective detection and mitigation, IDPSs must continuously improve their performance due to the constantly developing nature of cyber threats. However, an IDPS is more difficult to use and less reliable when it deals with huge amounts of data. This study aimed to improve the performance of IDPSs by employing optimization algorithms to reduce the data size. Particularly, the Harris Hawks Optimization (HHO) and Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA) were combined for feature selection. The experimental results showed that the performance of the proposed IDPS was greatly improved by combining the HHO and WOA algorithms. Combining a Random Forest classifier with the suggested HHO/WOA feature selection method achieved very high results in accuracy (99.17%), recall (98.76%), precision (98.76%), and F1-score (98.43%).

An adaptive Harris hawks optimization (HHO) algorithm is proposed to solve the non-linearly constrained optimization problems. The algorithm, namely, instinctive reaction strategy based on HHO (IRSHHO), combines the instinctive reaction strategy (IRS) with the HHO algorithm. In IRSHHO, the increment of step length decreases with the increase in the iteration. Moreover, the energy of the prey is also considered to speed up the convergence in each iteration. The performance of the IRSHHO is investigated on five benchmark numerical examples. The results of IRSHHO provide very competitive results compared to other well-known algorithms. Furthermore, the IRSHHO is applied to optimize the auto drum fashioned brake problem. Results show that the IRSHHO can obtain the optimal solution with the braking efficiency factor that is increased by 27.872% from the initial design with the proposed IRSHHO method.

Abstract. The optimization of aerospace propulsion systems plays a pivotal role in enhancing performance and efficiency. This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of a 2D bypass dual throat nozzle, with a primary focus on optimizing two critical design parameters: expansion ratio and bypass width, to maximize the mass flow rate and facilitate thrust vectoring capabilities. An improved Harris Hawks Optimization (HHO) algorithm was leveraged in this research to achieve an optimal configuration for the nozzle. Furthermore, the complex relationship between design parameters and mass flow rate is approximated using a Radial Basis Function (RBF) surrogate model, allowing for effective optimization. Through extensive simulations and analyses, the effectiveness of the proposed methodology is demonstrated, showcasing significant improvements in nozzle performance compared to conventional approaches. Furthermore, the optimized configuration obtained through the HHO algorithm is systematically compared with other metaheuristic optimization algorithms, highlighting its superiority in achieving optimal solutions for thrust vectoring applications. This study advances aerospace propulsion technology by providing valuable insights into the optimization of bypass dual throat nozzles, thereby paving the way for enhanced performance and maneuverability in aerospace systems.

PurposeSea Lion Optimization (SLnO) algorithm involves the ability of exploration and exploitation phases, and it is able to solve combinatorial optimization problems. For these reasons, it is considered a global optimizer. The scheduling operation is completed by imitating the hunting behavior of sea lions.Design/methodology/approachCloud computing (CC) is a type of distributed computing, contributory in a massive number of available resources and demands, and its goal is sharing the resources as services over the internet. Because of the optimal using of these services is everlasting challenge, the issue of task scheduling in CC is significant. In this paper, a task scheduling technique for CC based on SLnO and multiple-objective model are proposed. It enables decreasing in overall completion time, cost and power consumption; and maximizes the resources utilization. The simulation results on the tested data illustrated that the SLnO scheduler performed better performance than other state-of-the-art schedulers in terms of makespan, cost, energy consumption, resources utilization and degree of imbalance.FindingsThe performance of the SLnO, Vocalization of Whale Optimization Algorithm (VWOA), Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA), Grey Wolf Optimization (GWO) and Round Robin (RR) algorithms for 100, 200, 300, 400 and 500 independent cloud tasks on 8, 16 and 32 VMs was evaluated. The results show that SLnO algorithm has better performance than VWOA, WOA, GWO and RR in terms of makespan and imbalance degree. In addition, SLnO exhausts less power than VWOA, WOA, GWO and RR. More precisely, SLnO conserves 5.6, 21.96, 22.7 and 73.98% energy compared to VWOA, WOA, GWO and RR mechanisms, respectively. On the other hand, SLnO algorithm shows better performance than the VWOA and other algorithms. The SLnO algorithm's overall execution cost of scheduling the cloud tasks is minimized by 20.62, 39.9, 42.44 and 46.9% compared with VWOA, WOA, GWO and RR algorithms, respectively. Finally, the SLnO algorithm's average resource utilization is increased by 6, 10, 11.8 and 31.8% compared with those of VWOA, WOA, GWO and RR mechanisms, respectively.Originality/valueTo the best of the authors’ knowledge, this work is original and has not been published elsewhere, nor is it currently under consideration for publication elsewhere.

The optimization of dam reservoir operations is of the utmost importance, as operators strive to maximize revenue while minimizing expenses, risks, and deficiencies. Metaheuristics have recently been investigated extensively by researchers in the management of dam reservoirs. But the animal-concept-based metaheuristic algorithm with Lévy flight integration approach has not been used at Karun-4. This paper investigates the optimization of dam reservoir operation using three unexplored metaheuristics: the whale optimization algorithm (WOA), the Levy-flight WOA (LFWOA), and the Harris hawks optimization algorithm (HHO). Utilizing a time series data set on the hydrological and climatic characteristics of the Karun-4 hydroelectric reservoir in Iran, an analysis was conducted. The objective functions and constraints of the Karun-4 hydropower reservoir were examined throughout the optimization procedure. HHO produces the best optimal value, the least-worst optimal value, the best average optimal value, and the best standard deviation (SD) with scores of 0.000026, 0.001735, 0.000520, and 0.000614, respectively, resulting in the best overall ranking mean (RM) with a score of 1.5 at Karun-4. Throughout the duration of the test, the optimized trends of water release and water storage indicate that HHO is superior to the other investigated metaheuristics. WOA has the best correlation of variation (CV) with a score of 0.090195, while LFWOA has the best convergence rate (3.208 s) and best CPU time. Overall, it can be concluded that HHO has the most desirable performance in terms of optimization. Yet, current studies indicate that both WOA and LFWOA generate positive and comparable outcomes.

With arrival of advanced technologies, automated appliances in residential sector are still in unlimited growth. Therefore, the design of new management schemes becomes necessary to be achieved for the electricity demand in an effort to ensure safety of domestic installations. To this end, the Demand Side Management (DSM) is one of suggested solution which played a significant role in micro-grid and Smart Grid systems. DSM program allows end-users to communicate with the grid operator so they can contribute in making decisions and assist the utilities to reduce the peak power demand through peak periods. This can be done by managing loads in a smart way, while keeping up customer loyalty. Nowadays, several DSM programs are proposed in the literature, almost all of them are focused on the domestic sector energy management system. In this original work, four heuristics optimization algorithms are proposed for energy scheduling in smart home, which are: bat algorithm, grey wolf optimizer, moth flam optimization, algorithm, and Harris hawks optimization (HHO) algorithm. The proposed model used in this experiment is based on two different electricity pricing schemes: Critical-Peak-Price and Real-Time-Price. In addition, two operational time intervals (60 min and 12 min) were considered to evaluate the consumer’s demand and behavior of the suggested scheme. Simulation results show that the suggested model schedules the appliances in an optimal way, resulting in electricity-cost and peaks reductions without compromising users’ comfort. Hence, results confirm the superiority of HHO algorithm in comparison with other optimization techniques.

An increase in global energy requirements, coupled with growing environmental concerns, has led to a heightened focus on efficient energy management systems, specifically in residential settings. Home Energy Management Systems (HEMS) have emerged as a promising solution to optimize energy consumption, reduce costs, and minimize environmental impact. These systems utilize advanced technologies and algorithms to monitor, control, and manage energy usage within households. Recent advancements in optimization techniques have introduced novel approaches to enhance the performance of HEMS. This paper explores the application of two powerful metaheuristic algorithms, the Grey Wolf Optimizer (GWO) and the Harris Hawks Optimization (HHO) algorithm. The objective of this paper is to minimize the energy consumption cost and simultaneously satisfy the operational constraints of residential appliances, which include demand limits, minimum usage frequency, and energy requirements. To meet the constraints, penalty functions are inculcated. The GWO, inspired by the social hierarchy and hunting behavior of grey wolves, and the HHO, which mimics the cooperative hunting strategy of Harris hawks, have shown promising results in optimizing the energy consumption cost by scheduling the loads effectively.

Predicting student performance for educational organizations such as universities, community colleges, schools, and training centers will enhance the overall results of these organizations. Big data can be extracted from the internal systems of these organizations, such as exam records, statistics about virtual courses, and e-learning systems. Finding meaningful knowledge from extracted data is a challenging task. In this paper, we proposed a modified version of Harris Hawks Optimization (HHO) algorithm by controlling the population diversity to overcome the early convergence problem and prevent trapping in a local optimum. The proposed approach is employed as a feature selection algorithm to discover the most valuable features for student performance prediction problem. A dynamic controller that controls the population diversity by observing the performance of HHO using the k-nearest neighbors (kNN) algorithm as a clustering approach. Once all solutions belong to one cluster, an injection process is employed to redistribute the solutions over the search space. A set of machine learning classifiers such as kNN, Layered recurrent neural network (LRNN), Naive Bayes, and Artificial Neural Network are used to evaluate the overall prediction system. A real dataset obtained from UCI machine learning repository is adopted in this paper. The obtained results show the importance of predicting students’ performance at an earlier stage to avoid students’ failure and improve the overall performance of the educational organization. Moreover, the reported results show that the combination between the enhanced HHO and LRNN can outperform other classifiers with accuracy equal to $$92\%$$ , since LRNN is a deep learning algorithm that is able to learn from previous and current input values.

Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA) and Grey Wolf Optimizer (GWO) are well-perform metaheuristic algorithms used by various researchers in solving feature selection problems. Yet, the slow convergence speed issue in Whale Optimization Algorithm and Grey Wolf Optimizer could demote the performance of feature selection and classification accuracy. Therefore, to overcome this issue, a modified WOA (mWOA) and modified GWO (mGWO) for wrapper-based feature selection were proposed in this study. The proposed mWOA and mGWO were given a new inversed control parameter which was expected to enable more search area for the search agents in the early phase of the algorithms and resulted in a faster convergence speed. The objective of this comparative study is to investigate and compare the effectiveness of the inversed control parameter in the proposed methods against the original algorithms in terms of the number of selected features and the classification accuracy. The proposed methods were implemented in MATLAB where 12 datasets with different dimensionality from the UCI repository were used. kNN was chosen as the classifier to evaluate the classification accuracy of the selected features. Based on the experimental results, mGWO did not show significant improvements in feature reduction and maintained similar accuracy as the original GWO. On the contrary, mWOA outperformed the original WOA in terms of the two criteria mentioned even on high-dimensional datasets. Evaluating the execution time of the proposed methods, utilizing different classifiers, and hybridizing proposed methods with other metaheuristic algorithms to solve feature selection problems would be future works worth exploring.
