Elementary Students’ Management of Conflicts in an Engineering Design Process and Its Effects on Their Group Interaction Progress

School managers have to manage conflict in a way that most benefits the organization and do the least harm to conflicting parties (Gannon 1979). A manager brings his people and personality to his office. This theory signifies the indispensability of one’s personality to a leader’s performance in his official job (Davis and Newstrom 1995). This descriptive survey-correlation method of research tried to find out which conflict management styles relate significantly to the personality attributes of the Southeast Asian school managers. The findings may serve as a feedback as to how this group of school managers manages conflict in certain situations and as a partial basis for assessment to determine their conflict management styles and personality attributes. The result indicated non-significant differences between their conflict management styles used in each of the five areas of concern which was established based on the computed value of the Phi-Coefficient since there were only two conflict management styles expressed by them in each area of concern namely, Integratingand Forcing. Point-Biserial Correlation Coefficient resulted to significant relationships between their conflict management styles and personality attributes since conflict management styles of Executive Position and Career have significant relationships with Selfesteem and Risk taking personality attributes. Adolescents' conflict management styles with parents are assumed to have an important impact on the quality of the parent-adolescent relationship and on adolescents' psychosocial development. Longitudinal research investigating possible determinants of these conflict management skills is scarce. The parenting context and adolescents' tendency to reject maternal authority are expected to shape adolescents' conflict management styles. Therefore, the present three-wave longitudinal study focuses on how parenting and adolescents' reactance relates to adolescents' conflict management styles and conflict frequency with mothers over time, and whether reactance may also explain the associations between parenting and certain conflict variables. We addressed these research questions by using a hybrid cross-lagged panel model with parenting as a latent variable (i.e., supportive parenting) and the other variables as manifest variables. Supportive parenting was measured by four well-known parenting dimensions: autonomy support, responsiveness, psychological control, and harsh control. Four conflict styles were investigated: positive problem solving, withdrawal, conflict engagement, and compliance. Questionnaires were completed by 812 adolescents at three annual waves (52% girls at Time 1). Supportive parenting was associated with fewer conflicts, more positive problem solving, and less compliance and reactance over time. Reactance was associated with more conflicts, conflict engagement and withdrawal, and less compliance. We did not find evidence for the mediating role of reactance in the over-time associations between parenting and adolescents' conflict management and frequency. Both parenting and reactance appeared important and unique determinants for adolescents' conflict management styles and frequency.

This paper investigates the direct impact of conflict management style on two types of interpersonal conflict: task and relationship conflict between marketing and R&D personnel during the new product development (NPD) process. The findings add to the structural contingency perspective pertaining to the study of conflict and provide a wider view of the beneficial role of conflict at the interpersonal level. The results show that task conflict is positively influenced by dominating and integrating styles, but is negatively influenced by a compromising style. In addition, relationship conflict is positively influenced by a dominating style but negatively influenced by integrating, obliging, and compromising styles. Key implications for marketing and R&D personnel are that they should typically use an integrating style in order to gain benefit from task conflict. However, they should avoid or compromise with a dominating person in order to minimize destructive outcomes from relationship conflict.

This study is a secondary analysis based on the study of Peng (Culture and conflict management in foreign-invested enterprises in China: an intercultural communication perspective. Peter Lang, Bern, 2003). The distribution of five categories of work-related conflicts was tabulated and analyzed among American, French, and Chinese employees in foreign-invested enterprises (FIEs) as well as Chinese employees in state-owned enterprises (SOEs) in mainland China. These are conflicts on salary, promotion, and fringe benefits, conflict on job assignment, conflict on worldview, conflict on personal taste and character, and conflict on management styles. The results of the data analysis generated an emerging pattern of conflict distribution that basically corresponds to the conflict management patterns of Western and Chinese employees in foreign-invested enterprises. The results of this study indicate that for conflict on salary, the Chinese have a higher conflict potential than Americans and French, whereas Americans have a higher conflict potential on management styles than French and Chinese. The influence of cultural values on conflict management styles is clearly reflected by the differences among American, Chinese, and French across their respective management styles over all five categories of conflicts. Between the FIE Chinese and SOE Chinese, significant differences are also found over the management styles of the five conflicts. The overall results of this study provide us with an insightful understanding that the collectivistic and individualistic orientations of high-contextual and low-contextual cultural members are not always aligned with the nonconfrontational and confrontational conflict management styles as we customarily believe. Conflict management styles should be expected, explained, and interpreted through a combination of cultural orientation, conflict stake, and personality.

Purpose Negotiating effectively in multicultural contexts or others is not only a very important skill for all organizational elements but also crucial to inter-organizational relations (Adler, 2008). If defined as a process that occurs when one party feels adversely affected by another (De Dreu, 1997). Conflict management styles can be analyzed as a function of personality variables. In this respect, cultural intelligence and self-monitoring appear to be relevant variables, as they are characterized by the demonstration of flexibility and interest in elements that are present in conflict management styles. This study aimed to evaluate the extent to which variables such as cultural intelligence and self-monitoring can positively influence the ability to solve interpersonal conflicts more effectively. Design/methodology/approach This study, with a sample of 399 individuals, aimed to test a model that explores how cultural intelligence and self-monitoring are related as predictor variables in the styles of conflict resolution. Findings It was observed that cultural intelligence presents itself as a reasonable predictor of conflict management styles, whereas self-monitoring appeared as a dispositional and controversial measure in relation to those styles. Self-monitoring exhibited itself as an important predictor of conflict management, but on the other hand, it had an influence on the choice of the dominating style in conflict situations. Practical implications Understanding the predictors of conflict management style and, in particular, realizing the extent to which cultural intelligence promotes a more effective conflict management style can help in the development of selection processes and skill training programs. The development of these multicultural skills will contribute to individual, social and organizational well-being. Originality/value This study contributes to the literature of individual differences and conflict management, demonstrating that some individual differences that predict the styles of conflict management can lead to a certain ambiguity in understanding the behaviour that an individual may adopt in situations of conflict.

This study examines the influence of conflict management styles, both cooperative and competitive, on information sharing and, in turn, on organizational performance. The mediation of information sharing in the relationship between conflict management styles and organizational performance is also examined. The effects of conflict management styles were analyzed at the intragroup level in a field that presupposes cooperation through a survey carried out with professionals who work in agricultural cooperatives. For the analysis of the 91 valid answers, partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) was used. The results indicate a relationship between conflict management styles and information sharing, which is positive for the cooperative style and negative for the competitive style. Furthermore, a positive relationship was observed between information sharing and organizational performance. However, no mediating effect of information sharing on the relationship between cooperative and competitive conflict management styles and organizational performance was found. Based on the results, it is concluded that the cooperative style of conflict management promotes the sharing of information and improves organizational performance. The same was not found for the competitive style of conflict management in the researched cooperatives. This broadens discussions about the possible benefits of conflicts in organizations, contrasting with the approaches about their harmful effects on organizational performance.

PurposeRelationship conflict has important negative organizational and personal consequences. However, papers analyzing how to buffer the negative effects of relationship conflict at work-unit level are lacking. This study aims to extend the literature by examining which specific conflict management styles used by work teams (avoiding, integrating and compromising) reduce or increase the link between relationship conflict and collective emotional exhaustion.Design/methodology/approachRegression analysis was conducted using 91 teams (398 employees) from 42 hotels and 42 restaurants.FindingsResults revealed that, as it was expected, relationship conflict was positively related to emotional exhaustion at a team level; this relationship depended on how team members handle relationship conflicts. That is, avoiding and integrating conflict management styles buffered the link between relationship conflict and collective emotional exhaustion, whereas compromising increased this positive link.Research limitations/implicationsOrganizations would include conflict management skills as a requirement for preventing negative consequences of conflict in teams, such as anxiety/depression and bullying.Originality/valueBy considering the unique perspective of team member’s shared perceptions of conflict management styles, important implications for the span of influence of collective perception of conflict on well-being have been indicated.

This research focuses on the analysis of conflict management styles from a constructive perspective. Its main objective is to identify and reflect on the styles of conflict management in the hospitality industry in Portugal. The specific objective is to analyze the relationship between conflict management styles and sociodemographic variables among employees in Portuguese hotel units. The sample consists of 798 employees, mainly male, between 30 and 34 years old, with secondary school education, who are mostly operating staff or undifferentiated employees, and with middle levels of seniority in the organization. The results suggest that employees use different strategies to manage organizational conflicts, with an emphasis on compromising and integrating styles. At the same time, conflict management styles are differently determined by certain sociodemographic variables of the employees. This research helps in the design and implementation of constructive conflict management strategies for managers, which contribute to the formulation of management systems focused on behaviors and attitudes of professionals in the context of the hotel sector.

A substantial amount of research has distinguished specific behaviors of distressed from nondistressed couples. Among this evidence are differences in relationship conflict management styles. This investigation examined differences in relationship satisfaction and conflict management styles among 30 sex dysfunction, 25 sex offender, and 26 satisfied couples assessed by the Dyadic Adjustment Scale (DAS) and the Styles of Conflict Inventory (SCI). Results indicate significantly different levels of marital adjustment and distinctive conflict management patterns among the three couples groups. The two sex problem groups were significantly more distressed than the satisfied couples, and sex offender couples appeared more conflicted than sex dysfunction couples. Compared to satisfied couples, sex dysfunction couples address relationship conflict with somewhat polarized roles with an "avoid vs. engage" pattern, while sex offender couples employ a more chaotic "engage-avoid vs. engage-avoid" style. These different patterns of reactivity to conflict suggest that individualized treatment approaches to this dimension of the clinical picture is warranted.

This study delves into the differences between men and women in terms of the causes of conflict and the conflict management styles they use in organizations. Literature about gender comparison, causes of conflict, and conflict management styles was studied. Responses were collected using a closed-ended questionnaire, which comprises two portions: one about the causes of conflict and another about conflict management styles. A total of 107 private school teachers participated in the survey; a convenience sampling technique was used for selecting the sample. It was revealed that there are similar experiences among men and women in personal causes and most of the structural causes of conflict. Besides, due to poor communication and inadequate resource distribution, men show a higher tendency, and due to unclear group/role structure and perception of group goals, women tend to fall highly into conflict. Moreover, men use a competing style and women use a compromising style of conflict management, but there is no significant difference between men and women in other conflict management styles. The findings will help managers formulate policies to restrain dysfunctional conflicts in the organization and design effective team structures and group roles for managing the conflicts in the organization.

This study assessed the correlation between educational leaders’ conflict management styles and the non – teaching employees’ organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) in A University. The respondents of the study were the 98 non – teaching employees from the various departments within A University. The study used adapted questionnaires that were customized to harmonize with the specific objective of establishing a relationship between conflict management styles and organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) among non-teaching staff. For the evaluation of conflict management styles, the researcher employed a modified version of the Thomas-Kilmann Model questionnaire, incorporating avoidance, accommodation, compromise, collaboration, and competition as the variables. To gauge the OCB of non-teaching employees, the researcher adapted a 25-item instrument rooted in the OCB scale formulated by Podsakoff in 1990. This tool encompasses facets such as altruism, courtesy, civic virtue, sportsmanship, and conscientiousness. Based on the conclusions derived in this study, the following are the recommendations: The study recommends implementing a conflict management program within organizations to address issues and foster an ideal working environment. It suggests offering training programs for leaders to improve conflict resolution skills, promoting open communication and recognizing high-level organizational citizenship behavior. The program should also encourage cross-functional communication and teamwork, and incorporate conflict management training into leadership development courses. The goal is to create a conflict management program where issues are skillfully addressed, ensuring that employees from diverse backgrounds feel valued and motivated. This Proactive Conflict Resolution Program aims to prevent conflicts from escalating, promoting a positive work environment by implementing proactive conflict resolution strategies based on organizational citizenship behavior.

For a new product development (NPD) organization, a little conflict can be a good thing. Healthy disagreements can push project team members or different functional groups in an organization to pursue more in‐depth, insightful analysis. This type of creative tension can help to engender an environment that encourages innovation and thus keeps NPD efforts free from the business‐as‐usual doldrums. However, management must ensure that conflict remains on a healthy level.David H. Gobeli, Harold F. Koenig, and Iris Bechinger note that conflict must be managed not only to increase the satisfaction of project team members, but also to achieve strategic project success. To provide better understanding of the important issues in conflict management, they examine the effects of three conflict factors on software development project success: context, conflict intensity, and conflict management style. Using survey responses from 117 software professionals and managers, they develop a multi‐level framework of success versus conflict for team‐based, software development projects. Within this framework, they examine context, conflict intensity, and conflict management approaches at the team and organization levels.For the participants in this study, unresolved conflict has a strong, negative effect on overall software product success and customer satisfaction. Project team member satisfaction decreases substantially with higher intensity conflict at the organization level, and even more strongly at the project level. For the respondents to this study, the combined effects of conflict intensity and conflict management style on project success are significant, but they are not as great as the combined effects of such context variables as company goals, group dynamics, and management support.Two conflict management styles—confronting and give and take—have beneficial effects on success at the organization level for the firms in this study. Smoothing, withdrawal, and forcing all have negative effects, although only forcing has a statistically significant negative effect. In general terms, the results suggest that management should guard against frequent use of the dysfunctional management styles—withdrawal, smoothing, and forcing. The results suggest that emphasis on confrontation—that is, true problem solving—is essential at the project level, even if a give‐and‐take style is better tolerated at the organization level.

Firestorms: Modeling conflict diffusion and management strategies in online communities

The objective of the study was to assess the relationship between conflict management styles and work-related well-being of employees in a higher education institution in South Africa. Participants were academic personnel (n = 180) and support staff (n = 201), of which 59.9% were females and 29.9% were black African participants of a large South African university. They completed self-report measures of conflict management and work-related well-being. The data were analysed to predict work-related well-being from conflict management styles and to determine the differences between support staff and academic personnel regarding conflict management styles and work-related well-being. Findings indicated the conflict management style of compromise to predict lower levels of engagement and higher levels of disengagement. Support staff reported to utilise the compromising and dominating style more than did academic personnel. Diversity in conflict management styles may serve organisations better than a monolithic conflict management style.

[3]For organizational effectiveness and efficient conflict management, it is necessary to have a certain level of conflict and to manage it with appropriate conflict strategies.In other words, it is not desirable to have no conflicts; rather, it is important to have conflicts that can Objectives: This study aimed to determine the relationship between the opinions of nurses working in psychiatric wards regarding their managers' conflict management styles and their self-perceived stress levels.Methods: This was a descriptive, comparative, and correlational study.The population consisted of 580 nurses working in psychiatric clinics of public and private hospitals in Istanbul, and 199 nurses were included in the sample.The "Personal Information Form," "Rahim Organizational Conflict Inventory-II (ROCI-II) Form A," and "Perceived Stress Scale" were used for data collection.Data were analyzed using frequency and percentage distributions, the Kruskal-Wallis test, Spearman correlation analysis, and the Mann-Whitney U test. Results:The participants' mean scores on the Conflict Management Scale were as follows: integration subscale 2.500.90;obliging subscale 3.030.74;dominating subscale 2.920.85;avoiding subscale 2.980.66;and compromising subscale 2.610.83.The mean score of the Perceived Stress Scale was 13.784.74.The mean score for the perceived stress subdimension was 4.492.04,and for the perceived coping subdimension was 9.303.45.A statistically significant, weak positive correlation was found between the perceived stress subdimension and the dominating subscale, while a weak negative correlation was observed with the compromising and integration subdimensions.A weak negative correlation was also found between the perceived coping subdimension and the integration, obliging, and compromising subdimensions.Conclusion: According to the nurses, their managers most frequently use obliging, avoiding, dominating, compromising, and integration styles, respectively, in conflict management.As managers' use of compromising and integration styles increases, the nurses' perceived stress levels decrease.
