Elliptic involutive structures on compact Lie groups

In this paper, we determine explicitly the spectra of the Dirichlet problems of some domains in simply connected compact simple Lie groups. As their applications, combining results of Hoffman [6] and Mori [10], we can state some stability conditions of these domains for the standard minimal isometric immersions into unit spheres.

In a recent article [K. H. Hofmann and F. G. Russo, ‘The probability that$x$and$y$commute in a compact group’,Math. Proc. Cambridge Phil Soc., to appear] we calculated for a compact group$G$the probability$d(G)$that two randomly selected elements$x, y\in G$satisfy$xy=yx$, and we discussed the remarkable consequences on the structure of$G$which follow from the assumption that$d(G)$is positive. In this note we consider two natural numbers$m$and$n$and the probability$d_{m,n}(G)$that for two randomly selected elements$x, y\in G$the relation$x^my^n=y^nx^m$holds. The situation is more complicated whenever$n,m\gt 1$. If$G$is a compact Lie group and if its identity component$G_0$is abelian, then it follows readily that$d_{m,n}(G)$is positive. We show here that the following condition suffices for the converse to hold in an arbitrary compact group$G$: for any nonopen closed subgroup$H$of$G$, the sets$\{g\in G: g^k\in H\}$for both$k=m$and$k=n$have Haar measure$0$. Indeed, we show that if a compact group$G$satisfies this condition and if$d_{m,n}(G)\gt 0$, then the identity component of$G$is abelian.

The compact simply connected Riemannian 4-symmetric spaces were classified by J. A. Jiménez according to type of the Lie algebras. As homogeneous manifolds, these spaces are of the form G/H, where G is a connected compact simple Lie group with an automorphism γ˜ of order four on G and H is a fixed points subgroup Gγ of G. According to the classification by J. A. Jiménez, there exist seven compact simply connected Riemannian 4-symmetric spaces G/H in the case where G is of type E8. In the present article, we give the explicit form of automorphisms ω˜4, κ˜4 and ε˜4 of order four on E8 induced by the C-linear transformations ω4, κ4 and ε4 of the 248-dimensional C-vector space e8C, respectively. Further, we determine the structure of these fixed points subgroups (E8)ω4, (E8)κ4 and (E8)ε4 of E8. These amount to the global realizations of three spaces among seven Riemannian 4-symmetric spaces G/H above corresponding to the Lie algebras h=su(2)⊕iR⊕e6, iR⊕so(14) and h=su(2)⊕iR⊕so(12), where h=Lie(H). With this article, the all realizations of inner automorphisms of order four and fixed points subgroups by them have been completed in E8.

The compact simply connected Riemannian 4-symmetric spaces were classified by J. A. Jimenez according to type of the Lie algebras. As homogeneous manifolds, these spaces are of the form $G/H$, where $G$ is a connected compact simple Lie group with an automorphism $\tilde{\gamma}$ of order four on $G$ and $H$ is a fixed points subgroup $G^\gamma$ of $G$. According to the classification by J. A. Jimenez, there exist seven compact simply connected Riemannian 4-symmetric spaces $G/H$ in the case where $G$ is of type $E_8$. In the present article, we give the explicit form of automorphisms $\tilde{w}_4$, $\tilde{\upsilon}_4$ and $\tilde{\mu}_4$ of order four on $E_8$ induced by the $C$-linear transformations $w_4, \upsilon_4$ and $\mu_4$ of the 248-dimensional vector space $𝔢^C_8$, respectively. Further, we determine the structure of these fixed points subgroups $(E_8)^{w_4}, (E_8)^{\upsilon_4}$ and $(E_8)^{\mu_4}$ of $E_8$. These amount to the global realizations of three spaces among seven Riemannian 4-symmetric spaces $G/H$ above corresponding to the Lie algebras $𝔥 = i \boldsymbol{R} \oplus 𝔰𝔲(8)$, $i\boldsymbol{R} \oplus 𝔢_7$ and $𝔥 = 𝔰𝔲(2) \oplus 𝔰𝔲(8)$, where $𝔥 = \mathrm{Lie}(H)$.

In this paper we present symbolic criteria for invariant operators on compact topological groups $G$ characterising the Schatten-von Neumann classes $S_{r}(L^{2}(G))$ for all $0<r\leq\infty$. Since it is known that for pseudo-differential operators criteria in terms of kernels may be less effective (Carleman's example), our criteria are given in terms of the operators' symbols defined on the noncommutative analogue of the phase space $G\times\hat{G}$, where $G$ is a compact topological (or Lie) group and $\hat{G}$ is its unitary dual. We also show results concerning general non-invariant operators as well as Schatten properties on Sobolev spaces. A trace formula is derived for operators in the Schatten class $S_{1}(L^{2}(G))$. Examples are given for Bessel potentials associated to sub-Laplacians (sums of squares) on compact Lie groups, as well as for powers of the sub-Laplacian and for other non-elliptic operators on SU(2)$\simeq\mathbb S^3$ and on SO(3).

In this paper, by virtue of the methods which comes from intersecting and combining differential geometry with wavelet theory, and this method belong to us. We extend the two-direction multiresolution and the two-direction Mallat Algorithm to the theory on the special differential manifold - compact Lie group, our work lay a foundation for the further study wavelet theory on compact Lie group.

Determination of compact Lie groups with the Borsuk-Ulam property

This paper explores further the connection between Langlands duality and T-duality for compact simple Lie groups, which appeared in work of Daenzer-Van Erp and Bunke-Nikolaus. We show that Langlands duality gives rise to isomorphisms of twisted K-groups, but that these K-groups are trivial except in the simplest case of SU(2) and SO(3). Along the way we compute explicitly the map on $H^3$ induced by a covering of compact simple Lie groups, which is either 1 or 2 depending in a complicated way on the type of the groups involved. We also give a new method for computing twisted K-theory using the Segal spectral sequence, giving simpler computations of certain twisted K-theory groups of compact Lie groups relevant for D-brane charges in WZW theories and rank-level dualities. Finally we study a duality for orientifolds based on complex Lie groups with an involution.

This chapter explores integration on a compact connected Lie group. One of the great advantages of working with a compact Lie group is the possibility of extending the notion of averaging from a finite group to the compact Lie group. If the compact Lie group is connected, then there exists a unique bi-invariant top-degree form with total integral 1, which simplifies the presentation of averaging. The averaging operator is useful for constructing invariant objects. For example, suppose a compact connected Lie group G acts smoothly on the left on a manifold M. Given any C∞ differential k-form ω‎ on M, by averaging all the left translates of ω‎ over G, one can produce a C∞ invariant k-form on M. As another example, on a G-manifold one can average all translates of a Riemannian metric to produce an invariant Riemann metric.

We are interested in global properties of systems of left-invariant differential operators on compact Lie groups: regularity properties, properties on the closedness of the range and finite dimensionality of their cohomology spaces, when acting on various function spaces e.g. smooth, analytic and Gevrey. Extending the methods of Greenfield and Wallach (1973) to systems, we obtain abstract characterizations for these properties and use them to derive some generalizations of results due to Greenfield (1972), Greenfield and Wallach (1972), as well as global versions of a result of Caetano and Cordaro (2011) for involutive structures.

We classify elementary abelian 2-subgroups of compact simple Lie groups of adjoint type. This finishes the classification of elementary abelian \(p\)-subgroups of compact simple Lie groups (equivalently, complex linear algebraic simple groups) of adjoint type started in Griess (Geom Dedicata 39(3):253–305, 1991).

On the blow – up of solutions to semilinear damped wave equations with power nonlinearity in compact Lie groups

This monograph provides an account of the structure of gauge theories from a group theoretical point of view. The first part of the text is devoted to a review of those aspects of compact Lie groups (the Lie algebras, the representation theory, and the global structure) which are necessary for the application of group theory to the physics of particles and fields. The second part describes the way in which compact Lie groups are used to construct gauge theories. Models that describe the known fundamental interactions and the proposed unification of these interactions (grand unified theories) are considered in some detail. The book concludes with an up to date description of the group structure of spontaneous symmetry breakdown, which plays a vital role in these interactions. This book will be of interest to graduate students and to researchers in theoretical physics and applied mathematics, especially those interested in the applications of differential geometry and group theory in physics.

We study the heat kernel on a compact Lie group. In this work, we will use structure theory of semisimple Lie algebra to find equivalent forms of the heat kernel on a general compact Lie group.
