Embedding -elementary lattices

This book grew out of seminar held at the University of Paris 7 during the academic year 1985-86. The aim of the seminar was to give an exposition of the theory of the Metaplectic Representation (or Weil Representation) over a p-adic field. The book begins with the algebraic theory of symplectic and unitary spaces and a general presentation of metaplectic representations. It continues with exposes on the recent work of Kudla (Howe Conjecture and induction) and of Howe (proof of the conjecture in the unramified case, representations of low rank). These lecture notes contain several original results. The book assumes some background in geometry and arithmetic (symplectic forms, quadratic forms, reductive groups, etc.), and with the theory of reductive groups over a p-adic field. It is written for researchers in p-adic reductive groups, including number theorists with an interest in the role played by the Weil Representation and -series in the theory of automorphic forms.

Over a finitely generated field extension in m variables over a p-adic field, any quadratic form in more than 2m + 2 variables has a nontrivial zero. This bound is sharp. We extend this result to a wider class of fields. A key ingredient to our proofs is a recent result of Heath-Brown on systems of quadratic forms over p-adic fields.

We show that a system of r quadratic forms over a 𝔭-adic field in at least 4r+1 variables will have a non-trivial zero as soon as the cardinality of the residue field is large enough. In contrast, the Ax–Kochen theorem [J. Ax and S. Kochen, Diophantine problems over local fields. I, Amer. J. Math. 87 (1965), 605–630] requires the characteristic to be large in terms of the degree of the field over ℚp. The proofs use a 𝔭-adic minimization technique, together with counting arguments over the residue class field, based on considerations from algebraic geometry.

Classifications and representations are two main topics in the theory of quadratic forms. In this paper, we consider these topics of ternary quadratic forms. For a given squarefree integer N N , first we give the classification of positive definite ternary quadratic forms of level 4 N 4N explicitly. Second, we give explicit formulas of the weighted sum of representations over each class in every genus of ternary quadratic forms of level 4 N 4N , which are involved with modified Hurwitz class number. In the proof of the main results, we use the relations among ternary quadratic forms, quaternion algebras, and Jacobi forms. As a corollary, we get the formula for the class number of positive ternary quadratic forms of level 4 N 4N . As applications, we derive an explicit base of Eisenstein series space of modular forms of weight 3 / 2 3/2 and level 4 N 4N , and give new proofs of some interesting identities involving representation number of ternary quadratic forms.

Hilbertʼs Tenth Problem for rational function fields over p-adic fields

In this note (cf. sections 3, 4) I shall give an axiomatization of those fields (of characteristic ≠ 2) which have a theory of quadratic forms like the -adic numbers or like the real numbers. This leads then, for instance, to a generalization of the well-known theorems on -adic forms to a wider class of fields, including non-local ones. The main purpose of the exercise is, however, to separate out the roles of the arithmetic in the underlying field, on the one hand, which solely enters into the verification of the axioms, and of the ordinary algebra of quadratic forms on the other hand. The resulting clarification of the structure of the theory is of interest even in the known -adic case.

Mosco convergence of nonlocal to local quadratic forms

We obtain new results on linear spaces on the intersection of two quadratic forms defined over a non-dyadic p-adic field \({{\Bbb Q}_p}\). One of our main tools is a recent result of Parimala and Suresh on isotropy of quadratic forms over functions fields over \({{\Bbb Q}_p}\). As a corollary we also get new bounds for the number of variables necessary to always find a non-trivial p-adic zero of a system of quadratic forms.

On almost strong approximation for algebraic groups

We show that the theorem of Ellenberg and Venkatesh on representation of integral quadratic forms by integral positive definite quadratic forms is valid under weaker conditions on the represented form.

First we give a formula of spherical functions on certain spherical homogeneous spaces. Then, applying it, we complete the theory of the spherical functions on the space X of nondegenerate unramified hermitian forms on a p-adic number field. More precisely, we give an explicit expression for the spherical functions, prove theorems on the spherical Fourier transforms on the space of Schwartz-Bruhat functions on X, and parametrize of all spherical functions on X. Finally, as an application, we give explicit expressions of local densities of representations of hermitian forms.

Algorithmic copositivity detection by simplicial partition

A quadratic $\mathbb {Z}$-lattice L of rank n is denned to be k-regular for a positive integer $k \leq n$ if L globally represents all quadratic $\mathbb {Z}$-lattices of rank k which are represented everywhere locally by L. It is shown that there exist only finitely many isometry classes of primitive positive definite quadratic $\mathbb {Z}$-lattices of rank 4 which are 2-regular.

A parametrization of a large class of nonlinear feedback control laws which stabilize unstable critical systems and the corresponding bifurcations is proposed. The feedback control consists of quadratic and cubic forms in the state variables. The parametrization makes use of the modal decomposition-based multilinear form representations, for which an algorithm is developed. The parametrization is then obtained by using the algorithm to implement the specifications of the design parameters within the quadratic and cubic forms.< <ETX xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">&gt;</ETX>

We consider a class of singular, zero-range perturbations of the quantum Hamiltonian of a system consisting of a test particle and N harmonic oscillators (Rayleigh gas). Using the theory of quadratic forms we construct the self-adjoint and bounded from below perturbed Hamiltonian and we give representation formulas for the resolvent and the unitary group. The one-dimensional, two-dimensional and three-dimensional cases are discussed.
