Abstract

In 1962, New York City enacted a minimum wage law (subsequently held by the courts to be beyond the city's legislative authority) which would have provided for minima higher than those established by similar state and federal legislation. The authors, in this article, report their attempt to quantify, by means of establishing Cobb-Douglas functions, the theoretical impact of the New York City ordinance on employment. Within the limiting assumptions of that technique, the authors found an estimated job loss of approximately 100,000. (Author's abstract courtesy EBSCO.)
