Empowering Continuous Delivery in Software Development: The DevOps Strategy

Successful implementations of Software Development Methodologies significantly improve software efficiency, collaboration and security. Most companies are moving away from traditional development methodologies towards DevOps for faster and better software delivery. DevOps, which is a primary need of the IT industry, brings development and operation teams together to overcome communication gaps responsible for software failures. It relies on different sets of automation tools to robotize the tasks of software development from continuous integration, to testing, delivery, and deployment. The existence of several automation tools in each development phase raises the need for an integrated set of tools to reduce development time. For this purpose, we used the DevOps-based hybrid model Integrated Tool Chain (ITC), along with three sample java-based projects or code repositories to quantify the results. This paper evaluates and compares measurement metrics of java projects using traditional development methodologies and DevOps, and the results are shown in tabular and graphical format. The latest Google and Stack Overflow Trends have also been included to retrieve the best performer development methodology. This comparative and evaluative performance analysis will be beneficial to young researchers that study the metrics of software development, while also they will be introduced to the automotive environment of DevOps, the latest emerging buzzword in software development.

Modern software development approaches rely extensively on tools. Motivated by practices such as continuous integration, deployment and delivery, these tools are used in a fashion where data are automatically accumulated in different databases as a side-effect of everyday development activities. In this paper we introduce an approach for software engineering data visualization as a mash up that combines data from issue management, software development and production use. The visualization can show to all stake holders how well continuous delivery is realized in the project. The visualization clearly shows the time spent to specify and develop the features as well the length of the delivery cycle. Further more the visualization shows how much work is unfinished and waiting for delivery. This can help the development team to decrease the amount of unfinished work and by that help them to keep up in continuous delivery mind set. In addition to development data usage of the features is also visualized.

Competition is rife within BPO-IT service providers as outsourcing clients opt for providers’ that will add significant value to their operations. Thus, providers perceive DevOps as one way of improving the quality of clients’ services through in-house development of reliable software. Research findings indicate that DevOps involves internal reorganisation that could provide the best possible option to combine people, process and software development tools. The approach has been widely applied in software development companies purposely for continuous delivery of reliable software, and to add value to client’s services within provider’s domain. This paper presents the findings from a multi case study of DevOps implementation in BPO-IT service provider organisations. The findings suggest the inclusion of DevOps as an element of strategic IT planning to improve competitiveness by reducing costs and quality of services. The developed DevOps framework proposes a team of coordinating teams working together to improving client and providers’ performances combining IT management, software development and processing teams respectively. To illustrate the concept of the framework, a flowchart depicting a stepwise role of each team is developed, allowing for implementation of agility and flexibility into the process and continuous software delivery, reduced time of service delivery, and improved quality of services.

This paper illustrates how Jenkins evolved from being a pure Continuous Integration Platform to a Continuous Delivery one, embracing the new design tendency where not only the build but also the release and the delivery process of the product is automated. In this scenario Jenkins becomes the orchestrator tool for all the teams/roles involved in the software lifecycle, thanks to which Development, Quality&Assurance and Operations teams can work closely together.Goal of this paper is not only to position Jenkins as hub for CD, but also introduce the challenges that still need to be solved in order to strengthen Jenkins' tracking capabilities.

In the era of digital transformation, mobile engineering teams face the challenge of delivering high - quality mobile applications at an accelerated pace. Agile development methodologies have become widely adopted to enable rapid iteration and continuous delivery. However, traditional testing processes often struggle to keep up with the speed and flexibility demanded by agile development. This paper explores the principles and practices of agile testing in mobile engineering, focusing on strategies for adapting testing processes to support rapid iteration and continuous delivery. We present a framework for integrating agile testing practices into the mobile app development lifecycle, emphasizing collaboration, automation, and continuous feedback. The paper discusses the key challenges and best practices for implementing agile testing in mobile engineering, including test planning, test automation, continuous integration and deployment, and team collaboration. We also highlight the importance of adopting a quality - driven mindset and leveraging data - driven insights to optimize testing efforts. The insights and recommendations provided in this paper aim to guide mobile engineering teams in embracing agile testing practices to deliver high - quality mobile apps faster and more efficiently in the context of digital transformation.

Continuous Delivery is an agile software development practice in which developers frequently integrate changes into the main development line and produce releases of their software. An automated Continuous Integration infrastructure builds and tests these changes. Claimed advantages of CD include early discovery of (integration) errors, reduced cycle time, and better adoption of coding standards and guidelines. This paper reports on a study in which we surveyed 152 developers of a large financial organization (ING Nederland), and investigated how they adopt a Continuous Integration and delivery pipeline during their development activities. In our study, we focus on topics related to managing technical debt, as well as test automation practices. The survey results shed light on the adoption of some agile methods in practice, and sometimes confirm, while in other cases, confute common wisdom and results obtained in other studies. For example, we found that refactoring tends to be performed together with other development activities, technical debt is almost always self-admitted, developers timely document source code, and assure the quality of their product through extensive automated testing, with a third of respondents dedicating more than 50% of their time to do testing activities.

Allure Reports, an open-source framework, significantly enhance the visualization and comprehensibility of test results in software testing. This paper explores the integration of Allure Reports with GitHub Workflows to automate the generation, publication, and management of detailed and interactive test reports. The primary focus is on improving communication, debugging processes, and overall testing efficiency through auto- mated, real-time reporting solutions. Key features of Allure Re- ports include interactive visualizations, comprehensive overviews, detailed test case information, customizable reports, and seamless integration with Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) pipelines. Additionally, the paper discusses the role of GitHub Pages and GitHub Artifacts in making test results accessible and supporting continuous integration and delivery processes. The implementation of this integration resulted in enhanced transparency, collaboration, and efficiency within development teams, as well as improved test result visibility and debugging capabilities. Empirical studies support our findings, highlighting improvements in task efficiency and reduced debugging time through the use of automated reporting and continuous integration practices [1- 3].

Modern software development organizations rely on continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD), since it allows developers to continuously integrate their code in a single shared repository and automates the delivery process of the product to the user. While modern software practices improve the performance of the software life cycle, they also increase the complexity of this process. Past studies make improvements to the performance of the CI/CD pipeline. However, there are fewer formal models to quantitatively guide process and product quality improvement or characterize how automated and human activities compose and interact asynchronously. Therefore, this paper develops a Petri net model to analyze a CI/CD pipeline to improve process performance in terms of the probability of successfully delivering new or updated functionality by a specified deadline. The utility of the model is demonstrated through a sensitivity analysis to identify stages of the pipeline where improvements would most significantly improve the probability of timely product delivery.

The importance of traceability in software development has long been recognized, not only for reasons of legality and certification, but also to enable the development itself. At the same time, organizations are known to struggle to live up to traceability requirements, and there is an identified lack of studies on traceability practices in the industry, not least in the area of tooling and infrastructure. This paper identifies traceability as a key challenge in achieving continuous integration and delivery and documents an industry developed framework - Eiffel - designed to provide real time traceability in continuous integration and delivery. The efficacy of the Eiffel framework is then investigated through comparison with previous traceability methods.

Present six strategies to overcome Continuous Delivery (CD) adoption challenges.Identify and elaborate eight further challenges for research.They are based on four years CD adoption experience at a multi-billion-euro company. Continuous Delivery (CD) is a relatively new software development approach. Companies that have adopted CD have reported significant benefits. Motivated by these benefits, many companies would like to adopt CD. However, adopting CD can be very challenging for a number of reasons, such as obtaining buy-in from a wide range of stakeholders whose goals may seemingly be different fromor even conflict withour own; gaining sustained support in a dynamic complex enterprise environment; maintaining an application development team's momentum when their application's migration to CD requires an additional strenuous effort over a long period of time; and so on. To help overcome the adoption challenges, I present six strategies: (1) selling CD as a painkiller; (2) establishing a dedicated team with multi-disciplinary members; (3) continuous delivery of continuous delivery; (4) starting with the easy but important applications; (5) visual CD pipeline skeleton; (6) expert drop. These strategies were derived from four years of experience in implementing CD at a multi-billion-euro company. Additionally, our experience led to the identification of eight further challenges for research. The information contributes toward building a body of knowledge for CD adoption.

Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to help in providing insight on the effectiveness in using continuous integration in software development. This study aim is being completed using the help of existing journal and article, theories and literature review of effectiveness implementing the continuous integration.
 Design Approach - A total of 30 Journal and Article including literature review is been analysed using state of the art literature review methodology.
 Findings – Due to limited resources and cost, the review is limited in Software development but provides avenues for future research in difference sector such as industries that required automation in their work. We also found out that the continuous delivery became popular in the current year as there a lot of software and application rises due to the booming of the smartphone technology.
 Problems Statement – Even with the growth of technology some organisation still depends to the traditional method. This is because lack of expertise and no budgets. Continuous integration already exists in over a decade, but the implementation is not widely being introduce.

In the industry of software development, DevOps play a crucial role for automation, collaboration promotion as well as continuous delivery. The crucial disruptions have done through Artificial Intelligence (AI) for the application of software implement and delivery while integrating with DevOps. The combination of AI as Machine Learning (ML) towards DevOps practices has revolutionized software implement as well as maintenance have created a concrete method for high resilience, efficient as well as scalable method. AI has transformed the method for deploying DevOps. The implementation of AI is considered for improving the process of software development as well as streamlined operations. Traditional DevOps, characterized by Continuous Integration (CI) and Continuous Delivery (CD), often struggles with scalability, error-prone processes, and the need for constant human oversight. By leveraging AI/ML, organizations can predict deployment outcomes, identify potential issues in real time, and automatically rectify them, reducing downtime and enhancing overall system performance. The paper even focuses towards the future of AI in DevOps by introducing the recommendation with envisioning a fully autonomous deployment and maintenance ecosystem. By addressing current challenges and embracing AI/ML technologies, organizations can significantly improve their DevOps processes, leading to faster, more reliable software delivery.

The Internet of Things (IoT) technology has grown rapidly over the past decade, resulting in deployments of thousands of IoT devices around the world. Then, managing firmware updates for these numerous devices poses significant challenges. Firmware updates face issues such as version rollback, modified firmware files, and potential man-in-the-middle (MITM) attacks, highlighting the need for a secure over-the-air (OTA) firmware update mechanism. In this paper, we propose an automated OTA firmware update mechanism, integrated with continuous integration (CI) and continuous delivery (CD) to ensure trusted sources for firmware origins. It offers security, error handling during firmware updates, and monitoring of the update process. For evaluations, we implemented the proposal with the SEMAR IoT application server that has been implemented in our previous studies. Then, we verified the integrity and authentication, measured the performance and resource utilization, and performed benchmarking tests to assess the efficiency. The results demonstrate that the proposal is sufficiently reliable and efficient.

Satisfactory software performance is essential for the adoption and the success of a product. In organizations that follow traditional software development models (e.g., waterfall), Software Performance Engineering (SPE) involves time-consuming experimental modeling and performance testing outside the actual production environment. Such existing SPE methods, however, are not optimized for environments utilizing Continuous Integration (CI) and Continuous Delivery (CD) that result in high frequency and high volume of code changes. We present a summary of lessons learned and propose improvements to the SPE process in the context of CI/CD. Our findings are based on SPE work on products A and B conducted over 5 years at an online services company X. We find that (a) SPE has mainly become a post hoc activity based on data from the production environment, (b) successful application of SPE techniques require frequent re-evaluation of priorities, and (c) engineers working on SPE require a broader skill set than one traditionally possessed by engineers working on performance.

As discussed in the previous chapter, application deployment in DevOps requires a Continuous Integration (CI) tool and Continuous Delivery (CD) tool/release management software to automate the entire process. Currently, there are several tools available in the market. This chapter discusses three best-of-breed tools—TeamCity as a CI tool, Octopus Deploy as a release management tool, and CD software to deploy the package on the Azure web application. Since different vendors deliver these best-of-breed tools, there is some complexity involved in integrating them into a single solution.
