Additive manufacturing (AM), commonly known as 3D printing, has emerged as a transformative technology across various industries due to its potential for design flexibility, material efficiency, and reduced production lead times. As global attention increasingly shifts toward environmental sustainability, there is a growing need to evaluate the ecological implications and opportunities associated with AM. This comprehensive review explores the current state of sustainable and green additive manufacturing (SGAM) technologies and practices, highlighting innovations that reduce energy consumption, minimize material waste, and incorporate renewable or recyclable materials. This study focuses on the utilization of recyclable thermoplastics combined with biodegradable polymers, exploring sustainable source materials, cold fabrication techniques, and cyclic lifecycle strategies integrated with renewable energy systems. Despite its potential, SGAM faces key challenges such as material compatibility, scalability of manufacturing processes, mechanical property optimization, and the need for standardized production protocols. Nevertheless, this work finds that SGAM devices are effective in minimizing environmental impact across the entire manufacturing process, aligning with predominant research trends that emphasize strategic predictive models to guide future developments in AM system implementation. The review concludes with future directions and research opportunities to enhance the environmental performance of AM technologies, ultimately contributing to a more sustainable manufacturing landscape.

This study investigates how environmental pollution issues and sustainability influence contemporary Malaysian art through the artwork of Nor Tijan Firdaus. Using recycled electronic waste, her art reflects personal and societal concerns about environmental degradation and sustainable material use. Through a qualitative approach involving observation, interviews, and documentation, this research investigates the creative process of Nor Tijan Firdaus, positioning her within the context of Malaysian contemporary women artists, materials, visual symbolic and the meanings embedded in her artworks. Her consistent use of recycled materials highlights a systematic framework driven by environmental awareness. The study emphasizes the role of contemporary art in promoting sustainability and enhancing public understanding of the ecological, social, and cultural value of recycled materials in visual expression.

Energy intensity is one of the most important energy feature that has a dramatic value in energy system of Iran. Indeed, Iran is one of the most energy intensive countries in the world and its main reason is related to high energy consumption in household section. In this article, we present a non-linear model that considers three scenarios in management of household energy demand reducing. Therefore, a rational percentage of energy consumption reduction in the household sector, which firstly eliminates the imbalance between energy production and consumption, and secondly, derives a rational amount of profit from various reduction scenarios, will be presented. The mentioned rational profits in this article are obtained from three scenarios. In the first scenario, it is assumed that the percentage reduction in household energy consumption will be allocated to reducing energy demand in the industrial sector, resulting in profits from value-added creation in this sector. In the second scenario, all benefits from reducing energy consumption in the household sector will be devoted to energy exports, yielding profits from this source. Finally, in the third scenario, the reduction in energy consumption will lead to a decrease in energy supply and consequently a reduction in energy supply costs. To conduct a comprehensive study, a combination of the mentioned scenarios has also been modeled and investigated. The model results indicate that with a 25% reduction in household energy consumption in the 2024-2034 timeframe, the energy imbalance will be eliminated, and allocating 5% of this reduction entirely to the industrial sector will result in profits equivalent to $164.18 billion. However, it should be noted that in the considered combined scenarios, the greater the share of the first scenario, the higher the resulting profit, and the optimal point is achieved in the first scenario.

In the second place, it analyzes green manufacturing technique of saving type and reducing type. At last, this article researches cutting fluid system of green manufacturing, introduces the traditional system disadvantages, and improve it. This article has a positive function to the workers of manufacturing industry.

This paper investigates the concept of green logistics and manufacturing in automotive industry, in particular to manufacturing logistics and material handling involving the process of automobile assembling. This is based on actual case study of automotive assembly plant. An efficient decision making model is proposed that capture the impacts of strategic decisions on production costs and environmental sustainability. The model will assist decision makers acquire an in-depth understanding of relationship between high level planning and low level operation activities on production, environmental impacts and costs associated. The modeled problems are within the manufacturing facility of automotive assembly line and inbound logistics. The research method used is system dynamics (SD) simulation technique. The main green manufacturing and logistical issues considered are Carbon Dioxide (CO2) emission, waste generation, water and energy utilization. The results of the SD model signify the existence of positive tradeoffs between green practices (CO2 reduction, water and energy conservation) and operational costs

The central theme of this Special Issue is emerging opportunities and future directions in automation for green manufacturing, where information technology based modeling, analysis, control and optimization are the focus areas. The purpose is to show the state-of-the-art research and applications in the general area of automation in green manufacturing, by bringing together researchers and practitioners from both academia and industry, to address the significant advancement, expose the unsolved challenges, present the critical needs for integration with new technologies, and provide visions for future research and development. This Special Issue presents original, significant and visionary automation papers describing scientific models, methods and technologies with both solid theoretical development and practical importance that improve process, efficiency, productivity, quality, and reliability in green manufacturing. The contributions in this Special Issue can be divided into the following categories in green manufacturing: renewable energy products and systems; energy savings in manufacturing processes and systems; remanufacturing system design; and emission reduction in supply chain management. Specifically, the following papers are included in this Special Issue. The first category addresses renewable energy source, which includes manufacturing and operation of alternative energy products, such as batteries for electric vehicles, and system design to support manufacturing activities using renewable energy sources, such as electricity generated by wind turbines and solar panels. The second category focuses on energy savings in manufacturing, such as operational control and robot scheduling to minimize energy consumptions in production, optimal design of facility and production to reduce energy cost. The third category extends the study to remanufacturing, which plays a significant role to achieve sustainability and multiple life cycles. This includes remanufacturing system analysis, design and optimization, such as strategies for recycling, reassembly, etc. Finally, the last category considers supply chain management, within which multiple firms work together to reduce negative environmental impact.

In recent years, the manufacturing sector in India has been witnessing a continuous growth in output production due to increase in investment in the sector and the government’s commitment to reduce reliance on imports and boost exports considering the country’s huge domestic market. However, this development is not environmentally friendly as increase in production entails increase in energy consumption, which result in an increased carbon emission that damage the environment. In view of the foregoing situation, this study is set out to investigate the impact of manufacturing value-added on environmental degradation in India over the 1965-2016 period. The study used autoregressive and distributed lag (ARDL) model to achieve its objective. Carbon dioxide emission was used to proxy environmental degradation in the model. In order to serve as control variables in the model, some selected relevant macroeconomic variables such as energy use, trade openness, and economic growth were employed. The estimated result showed that manufacturing value added has positive impact on environmental degradation in India. It infers that the increasing production in the manufacturing sector is degrading the environment through carbon emission. This suggests that an increase in manufacturing sector value added contributes to reducing the quality of environmental in India. Also, the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) hypothesis was tested and found to be invalid and non-existent. Since the manufacturing sector consumes a lot of energy in its productive activities, the result does not come as a surprise. Thus, we suggest that policymakers in India should apply appropriate measures to improve the quality of the environment through adoption of new technology that will ensure energy efficiency and reduce carbon emission from the country’s manufacturing sector.

This study aimed to investigate the impact of renewable energy usage on Kenya’s manufacturing and industrial sectors. It emphasizes the sector’s transition toward green manufacturing and industrial growth. The study made use of annual time series data for the period 1985-2023. It employed the ARDL framework, guided by the AIC criterion and the ECM to capture both short-run and long-run dynamics amongst the variables. The ARDL findings revealed that the use of renewable energy has immediate positive impacts on manufacturing output and productivity. The lagged effects emerge over multiple periods, implying the gradual integration of renewable energies into the production processes. On the other hand, non-renewable energy consumption has delayed negative effects, thus highlighting the shortcomings that come with the usage of non-renewable energies. Labour has a strong positive influence on output, whereas gross capital formation shows a long-lag positive impact. This shows the extended gestation periods of capital-intensive projects. The ECM results confirm that deviations from long-run equilibrium are corrected at a moderately fast rate of about 52% annually. The F-bounds test found the existence of a long-run association between renewable energy consumption and manufacturing and industrial output. These results emphasize the importance of renewable energy uptake, efficient capital deployment and labour utilization in driving sustainable manufacturing and industrial growth in Kenya. This study provides policymakers and industry stakeholders with empirical guidance for aligning energy policy, investment and technological adoption with Kenya’s broader objectives for green industrialization. This will ensure countries not only grow economically, but also grow sustainably since renewable energies have the capability of taking care of both the current and future energy needs without fear of depletion, while also ensuring environmental sustainability. This study, therefore, highlights that renewable energy consumption significantly supports Kenya’s manufacturing sector growth and recommends aligning industrial energy policy interventions with green growth and sustainability frameworks such as Vision 2030 and SDG 9 by promoting clean energy adoption, energy-efficient technologies and renewable energy integration within industrial value chains so as to enhance competitiveness and low-carbon industrial transformation.

Renewable energy consumption in economic sectors in the EU-27. The impact on economics, environment and conventional energy sources. A 20-year perspective

ObjectivesThe unprecedented surge in energy costs in Europe, coupled with the significant energy consumption of MRI scanners in radiology departments, necessitates exploring strategies to optimize energy usage without compromising efficiency or image quality. This study investigates MR energy consumption and identifies strategies for improving energy efficiency, focusing on musculoskeletal MRI. We assess the potential savings achievable through (1) optimizing protocols, (2) incorporating deep learning (DL) accelerated acquisitions, and (3) optimizing the cooling system.Materials and methodsEnergy consumption measurements were performed on two MRI scanners (1.5-T Aera, 1.5-T Sola) in practices in Munich, Germany, between December 2022 and March 2023. Three levels of energy reduction measures were implemented and compared to the baseline. Wilcoxon signed-rank test with Bonferroni correction was conducted to evaluate the impact of sequence scan times and energy consumption.ResultsOur findings showed significant energy savings by optimizing protocol settings and implementing DL technologies. Across all body regions, the average reduction in energy consumption was 72% with DL and 31% with economic protocols, accompanied by time reductions of 71% (DL) and 18% (economic protocols) compared to baseline. Optimizing the cooling system during the non-scanning time showed a 30% lower energy consumption.ConclusionImplementing energy-saving strategies, including economic protocols, DL accelerated sequences, and optimized magnet cooling, can significantly reduce energy consumption in MRI scanners. Radiology departments and practices should consider adopting these strategies to improve energy efficiency and reduce costs.Clinical relevance statementMRI scanner energy consumption can be substantially reduced by incorporating protocol optimization, DL accelerated acquisition, and optimized magnetic cooling into daily practice, thereby cutting costs and environmental impact.Key PointsOptimization of protocol settings reduced energy consumption by 31% and imaging time by 18%.DL technologies led to a 72% reduction in energy consumption of and a 71% reduction in time, compared to the standard MRI protocol.During non-scanning times, activating Eco power mode (EPM) resulted in a 30% reduction in energy consumption, saving 4881 € ($5287) per scanner annually.

Chapter 4 - Analysis of factors influencing smart and sustainable manufacturing systems using a multi-criteria decision making tool

Reducing energy use is a major consideration in green manufacturing. Ultrasonic vibration has the advantage of improving machining performance. This work presents an experimental investigation on magnetic compound fluid (MCF) polishing with and without ultrasonic vibration and estimates reductions in polishing energy consumption and surface roughness due to ultrasonic vibration during the machining process. A series of ultrasonic vibration-assisted MCF polishing (UVAMP) tests was carried out for brass H62, and the normal and tangential polishing forces, surface roughness and material removal rate of the traditional MCF polishing (MP) and UVAMP of brass were investigated for various machining parameters. The polishing energy consumptions during traditional MCF polishing and UVAMP were calculated and analyzed from the perspective of the energy of the polishing process. Results indicate that the use of UVAMP considerably reduces energy consumption and surface roughness during the polishing of brass. The adoption of UVAMP therefore has the potential to improve the efficiency and quality of polishing processes and offers a practical solution for the greener manufacturing of brass.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to examine the vital link between manufacturing firms and the environment, delving into the intricate connections among factors affecting these firms. Specifically, it investigates how the environmental performance of manufacturing firms is shaped by their adoption of environmental management practices and the regulatory environment in which they operate. Design/methodology/approach Data are currently being collected through a structured questionnaire from employees working in manufacturing firms in Pakistan. Random sampling was used to select the participants. The hypotheses were tested using PLS-SEM analysis. Findings The study reveals a positive correlation between green manufacturing practices and superior environmental performance. Effective environmental management systems further help firms reduce their environmental footprint. External environmental regulations play a significant role as moderators, influencing the strength and direction of the relationship between green manufacturing, environmental management and environmental performance. Practical implications The practical implications offer valuable insights and guidance for manufacturing companies seeking to improve their environmental responsibility and performance. Additionally, policymakers gain insights into how regulatory frameworks can be designed or modified to better support sustainability efforts within the manufacturing sector. Originality/value This study offers timely insights for sustainable business practices, aligning with corporate responsibility efforts. It contributes to both academic knowledge and provides actionable guidance for fostering environmentally responsible practices in the manufacturing sector.

In this paper, a full life cycle resource consumption model for automotive seats has been proposed based on the vehicle material-energy-pollution assessment model, and an assessment on energy consumption and abiotic depletion potential (ADP) impact is conducted to evaluate the power seat environmental performances of a representative passenger car from the standpoint of life cycle. The results show that the energy consumption of the selected automotive seats mainly occurs in the use phase. Among all types of energy consumption, the non-renewable energy consumption is much larger than the renewable energy consumption. According to the ADP impact assessment, the consumption of copper and crude oil makes the largest contribution to resource depletion, and the ADP index may increase significantly due to the additional electrical part of car seats. Therefore, the enhancement of environmental performances of car seats can be achieved through measures including design with lightweight metal, fuel-electric conversion efficiency improvement, reduction in energy consumption caused by seat motor running and a more sustainable material with low ADP coefficient.
