Engineering Applications

The study focused on producing lattice structures using rhombic and diagonal nodes and indicating their logical biomedical and engineering applications. Laser powder bed fusion manufacturing technology a subset of additive manufacturing was used to manufacture the lattice structures with different struts geometry. Average elastic modulus value of 5.3±0.2 GPa was obtained for the rhombic lattice structures and 5.1±0.1 GPa for the diagonal lattice structures. Generally, the mechanical properties of the lattice structures produced could be logically considered suitable for biomedical and engineering applications. The mechanical properties of the lattice structures could be fine-tuned for a specific engineering or biomedical applications by varying the lattice properties of the lattice structures.

<div class="htmlview paragraph">This study is about the application of Value Engineering in order to increase the new parts supplier definition process of an automotive company. The stages of this process were analyzed and classified to determine how should be performed. New ideas were listed to improve the process and classified according to a variant of the FIRE method of evaluation that was suggested by the author of this study. In the timing sample survey of each performed function, was found out that the initials ones were in a lower level of the requested causing the increase of timing for the intermediate functions.</div>

Transformation plays a much more important role in every science. In this research article, two parametric forms of SEE transformation have been explored and the fundamental properties of two parametric SEE transformations have been shown. Furthermore, the transformed function of some fundamental functions and their time derivative rule has been shown. The application of two parametric SEE transformations in solving differential equations has been shown. The radioactive decay problem in first-order linear differential equations has been solved in this article which has large applications in nuclear energy engineering. Further, the solution to the beam deflection problem has been shown to have many applications in the engineering field. These results can be compared with other Laplace-type transformations.

Modern low-coercivity thermomagnetic materials used in electrical engineering, electronics, and tool engineering are reviewed. They are primarily for the manufacture of magnetic shunts, magnetic secondary resistances, and temperature-sensitive elements for relays, whose response time is determined by the temperature near the Curie point). The effect of alloying additives (Mo, Cr, Cu) on the magnetic properties, heat treatment, and properties of structural changes in iron–nickel alloys is considered. The advantages of new thermomagnetic powder materials in comparison with cast alloys are demonstrated. Also, the prospects of their application in electrical engineering are considered.

Engineering and environmental properties of foamed recycled glass as a lightweight engineering material

The representation of the Earth’ topography in a 3D digital format is a vital constituent in a wide range of geographic, geomatics, environmental, and engineering activities. However, the accuracy of such representations could define its applicability and validity for a specific utilization. This chapter presents an analysis of four open-source Global Digital Elevation Models (GDEMs) and compares them on two topographic profiles (nearly flat, and hills regions) for mapping and geomatics applications in two countries. The main goal is to determine whether GDEMs-based heights, contour intervals, slopes, and topographic profiles are accurate for all topographic map scales, which is a significant problem in mapping operations. For the purpose of illustrating flat and moderate-topography patterns, two case studies—the Nile delta in Egypt and Makkah city in Saudi Arabia—have been used. The investigated GDEMs include the most-recent released models: ASTER v.3, ACE 2, SRTMGL1 v. 3, and NASADEM_HGT v.1 released in 2019 and 2020 with spatial resolutions of 1 and 3 arc seconds. There are 540 accurate Ground Control Points (GCP) available in the Nile delta and 175 in Makkah. It has been determined based on the available datasets in two study locations that  the accuracy of investigated GDEMs over known checkpoints range from ±2.5 and ±5.1 meters in the Nile delta region, while it varies between ±5.1 and ±8.0 meters in the Makkah area. This suggests that the use of GDEMs in topographic mapping varies greatly between spatial areas that are flat and those that are hilly. Therefore, it is advised against utilizing GDEMs to create topographic maps at scales of 1: 25,000 or greater in flat areas and 1: 50,000 or greater in hilly areas. Additionally, the achieved results demonstrated that throughout cross sections up to 30 kilometers in length, no GDEM-based slope matches the real slopes from known GCP. This leads to the conclusion that GDEMs are not the appropriate heights' source for topographic mapping at medium and large map scales, and could not be utilized for topographic profiling in precise engineering and geomatics applications. Such findings should be vitally taken into account in mapping and engineering applications not just in Egypt and Saudi Arabia but worldwide as well.

Graph partitioning is a fundamental problem in several scientific and engineering applications. In this paper, we describe heuristics that improve the state-of-the-art practical algorithms used in graph-partitioning software in terms of both partitioning speed and quality. An important use of graph partitioning is in ordering sparse matrices for obtaining direct solutions to sparse systems of linear equations arising in engineering and optimization applications. The experiments reported in this paper show that the use of these heuristics results in a considerable improvement in the quality of sparse-matrix orderings over conventional ordering methods, especially for sparse matrices arising in linear programming problems. In addition, our graph-partitioning-based ordering algorithm is more parallelizable than minimum-degree-based ordering algorithms, and it renders the ordered matrix more amenable to parallel factorization.

The present study exhibits the behavior of ABS polymer (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) subjected to mechanical compression tests considering two filling patterns, rectangular and hexagonal; these patterns have been selected due to the geometric arrangement of their internal structure improves the mechanical properties of 3D printed parts, in addition to the increase in tensile strength. The specimens were developed by molten deposition modeling (FDM) under the ASTM D695 standard in 2015, so five samples of each pattern were made; they have an 80% filler material. This is due to the demanding mechanical requirement in engineering applications. The results obtained show that the rectangular fill pattern at 0° and 90° registered the highest compressive strength obtaining as a result an average compression strength of 4 179.92 N, likewise a percentage of deformation of 5.96% and a maximum compressive strength of 33.147 MPa. Because of the evidenced data, the rectangular pattern is useful for engineering and industrial applications, including substituting car parts, machinery or household appliances.

It is sometimes required to shift and/or merge the sampled images for complex perception development in medical and engineering applications. In most cases, for such requirements images are merged at the intensity level. This paper presents a study which shows that intensity level merge is not sufficient enough to analyse certain cases where sharp precision is needed to take a crucial decision. A method has been presented which could be used in precision implant engineering and biological applications like stent placement, where more accurate prediction is required of a combined phenomenon. Accurate merging of intended pixels can be achieved using frequency domain techniques for geometrical and geographical suitability assessment and visualization of post-stenting situation. This paper introduces a technique to merge various images and demonstrates how a surgeon can determine critical midpoint alignment of the stent and visualize the effect of a transplant before actually doing that.

In summary, this paper offers insights into the latest developments in thermal management, providing valuable information for researchers, engineers, and industry professionals seeking to optimize thermal performance and ensure the reliability of their systems in diverse engineering applications.

Ionic double-shell magnetic covalent organic framework for sharp and fast adsorption of critical metals

Towards efficient and sustaining condensation via hierarchical meshed surfaces: A 3D LBM study

Measurements of important spatial attributes, such as length, angle, perimeter and area of a Region of Interest (ROI) in an image can be an important feature in many scientific and engineering application. For some images, these measurement process is a straight forward process, while for others, this can be quite challenging, especially when the ROI is not a regularly shaped area. In many cases, apart from measuring the ROI, the users also requires to pre-process, archive the images and annotate them systematically for future use. In this study, we introduce a system called the QIMS (Quick Image Measurement System) which can be used to simplify the processes of pre-processing, measuring, annotating and archiving images systematically. QIMS framework was designed to be enable user specific add-ins modules be developed an integrated into it via COM(Component Object Model). The effectiveness of QIMS was shown via successful applications of QIMS by several research group in assisting the process of image measurement and management and it is currently being constantly upgraded to enable more advanced features to be included.

Model-Based Engineering (MBE) and Product Line Engineering (PLE) have been combined, to handle new system development constraints like: increasing complexity, higher product quality, faster time-to-market and cost reduction. As observed by some authors, the derivation of a product from product line shared core assets has been insufficiently addressed and can remain tedious in practice. We cope with this issue focusing on having a flexible and reactive model-based derivation, and propose an incremental evolution by extension of the product line coupled with this derivation activity. Process and tools bridge the gap between Application and Domain Engineering introducing a semi-automatic feedback to benefits from the developments made in the Application Engineering. The approach is applied to a model-based product line dedicated to Class diagrams, and is tooled within the Eclipse environment.

In Belgium, it took until the 1990’s before academic degrees in land surveying and later geomatics were organized. In 1990, the introduction of two types of academic degrees crowned a series of efforts to - on the one hand - improve the regulation of the profession of geodetic surveyors and - on the other hand - enhance the education in this field.\nThe first type of academic degree in land surveying was organized at the universities of Ghent and Liège and led to the degree of "Licence in Geography, option Land Surveying". With the implementation of the BAMA-structure in 2004, this 4-year curriculum degree evolved into a 5-year curriculum with an academic “Master in Geomatics and Surveying" (Ghent University) or a "Master in Geography, option Geomatics and Geometrology" (Université de Liège).\nThe second type of academic degree in land surveying was called "Industrial Engineer in Construction, option Land Surveying" and was organized at five Dutch speaking and four French speaking University Colleges (also called Technical Universities). Since the introduction of these degrees, they were subject to a series of changes which differ for the Flemish (Dutch speaking) Region and the Walloon (French speaking) Region of Belgium. The implementation of the BAMA-structure resulted in a “Master in Applied Engineering Sciences in Land Surveying” with a 4-year curriculum in the Dutch speaking and a 5-year curriculum in the French speaking part of Belgium. Furthermore, due to a recent decree on higher education in Flanders (Dutch speaking part of Belgium), the “Master in Applied Engineering Sciences in Land Surveying” will be integrated into the universities of Ghent and Leuven as of October 2013 and will lead to a “Master of Science in the Industrial Sciences: Land Surveying”.\nThe paper focuses on the implications of the changes in the legislation on education in Land Surveying and Geomatics at University Colleges and discusses the impact of the integration of the “Master in Applied Engineering Sciences in Land Surveying” in the Flemish universities.
