Engineering research technology for concurrent engineering from unified life cycle engineering

Concurrent Engineering (CE), or Integrated Product Development, is a Department of Defense (DoD) initiative for the defense industry; it has also been used very successfully by commercial industries. CE is applicable to any industry that develops its own products and wants to remain competitive in today's marketplace. The Computer-Aided Acquisition and Logistics Support (now called Continuous Acquisition and Life-Cycle Support) (CALS)/CE Industrial Steering Group (ISG), within the National Security Industrial Association (NSIA), chartered task groups to identify issues and guides to CE in the following areas: information exchange, electronic systems, mechanical systems, software, reliability and maintainability (R&M), manufacturing, and technical administration. This overview focuses on the electronic systems report, entitled First Principles of Concurrent Engineering: A Competitive Strategy for Electronic System Development. The core of the report defines the first principles and involves a technique for a self-assessment of the should be and the where is environment for CE. From the results of this self-evaluation, improvement planning and roadmap generation are possible from the report material. Also covered are benefits of CE, DoD, and industry obstacles to CE technology insights that enable CE, and recommendations to DoD and to industry to foster CE implementation. This report is the first primer on CE and should clarify the intent of CE as envisioned. This is a timely subject, as CE is now prone to many view points and ideas more aligned to partial instead of total implementation.

Abstract:Over the last decade group decision support system (gdss) technology has made enormous advances. This technology has also been studied from conceptual and design perspectives. In this paper we consider how GDSS can be used to improve group decisions in face-to-face conferencing (“decision rooms”), remote site teleconferencing, and remote/local computer conferencing. These prospects have been aided by advances in telecommunications technology and gdss seems poised for successful integration into modern organizations.This study looks at the actual ways in which gdss are currently being utilized. The framework for the study was derived from DeSanctis and Gallupe’s work; a survey of 135 randomly selected Data Processing Management Association (DPMA) members was used as the sample base. On the basis of their use, the DSS has received positive feedback from the University's decision makers. Making use of Intelligent Decision Support Systems (IDSS) technologies suited to provide decision support in the higher education environments, by generating and presenting relevant information and knowledge which are helpful in taking the decision regarding admission management in higher education colleges or universities. The university decision makers' needs and the DSS components are identified with the help of survey done. In this paper the components of a decision support system (DSS) for developing student admission policies in higher education institute or in the university and the architecture about DSS based on ERP are proposed followed by how intelligent DSS in conjunction with ERP helps to overcome the drawbacks , if ERP is used alone in higher education institutes .

Evaluation of in-vehicle Decision Support System for Emergency Evacuation

: DRC researched the logistics support metrics and studied the applicability of Decision Support System (DSS) technology for Air Force base-level supply operations. The DSS supports The Chief of Supply (COS) and other senior supply operations managers. DRC researched, interviewed, surveyed, and gathered data from Air Force supply professionals. This information assists future efforts to develop a DSS. Second, DRC reviewed available Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) software packages for applicability in DSS.

This paper provides the reader with a brief discussion on Expert System (ES), Geographic Information System (GIS), and Environmental Decision Support System (EDSS) technologies and their applications in environmental engineering in general and in landfill design and management in specific. It also brings into attention the benefits of integrating ESs and GISs together with simulation models (SM) in a decision support systems (DSS) framework to solve complex environmental problems, facilitated by the new advancements of computer technologies (both in hardware and software). Examples of such integration are provided to reflect how such a system can improve landfill design and management. Finally, the discussion concludes with the fact that although solving landfill design problems could greatly benefit from such a combination of technologies, there have been no attempts to combine ES, GIS, and SM for the comprehensive evaluation of landfill design and performance.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the First International Conference on Decision Support Systems Technology, ICDSST 2015, held in Belgrade, Serbia, in May 2015. The theme of the event was Big Data Analytics for Decision-Making and it was organized by the EURO (Association of European Operational Research Societies) working group of Decision Support Systems (EWG-DSS).The eight papers presented in this book were selected out of 26 submissions after being carefully reviewed by at least three internationally known experts from the ICDSST 2015 Program Committee and external invited reviewers. The selected papers are representative of current and relevant research activities in the area of decision support systems, such as decision analysis for enterprise systems and non-hierarchical networks, integrated solutions for decision support and knowledge management in distributed environments, decision support system evaluations and analysis through social networks, and decision support system applications in real-world environments. The volume is completed by an additional invited paper on big data decision-making use cases.

This paper reviews the research work on a relatively particular area – planning support systems (PSS) for urban land use planning (ULUP) from their emergence to the present. To aid readers’ clear understanding of PSS, its definition is discussed in the beginning. The review summarizes the development of PSS from two perspectives: system components and system application. In terms of system components, namely, the major theories and technologies serving for building the PSS such as related planning theories, GIS and decision support systems (DSS) technologies are reviewed respectively. With respect to system application, the paper discusses in detail their application to urban (land use) planning and other specialized planning separately. Based on this systematic overview, the characteristics in different times, especially current advantages and shortcomings of the PSS are indicated. Moreover, several new research trends in the PSS area are also highlighted for guiding researchers in future studies.

Concurrent engineering: Automation, tools, and techniques

Innovative product development and in-house process design have been largely studied and methods, such as concurrent engineering, integrated product development, or dynamic product development are set up to answer real needs of industrialists. However, no innovative product can be put on the market without a well-structured and well-organized network of partners. This simple idea deeply influences various aspects of collaborative enterprises. This article studies the close relationship between two parallel design processes: product design and network design. This paradigm called co-design is explained and some basic concepts and exploratory results are defined.

Mami's Care is a shop that sells necessities such as baby food, water bottles and clothes. One of the obstacles faced by Toko Peduli Mami is that decision support system technology has not been used in inventory forecasting and inventory data collection is still done manually, resulting in low accuracy of the data obtained. By considering these preferences, decision support system methods can produce predictions that are more accurate and relevant to the company's strategic goals. To forecast inventory, researchers provide a solution in the form of a system that helps managers determine product estimates that need to be prepared so that overstocking or understocking does not occur. Inventory reporting plays a very important role in any business as accurate information enables informed decision making. Therefore, a calculation method is needed to predict future inventory levels. This predictive system design uses a UML approach consisting of use case diagrams, activity diagrams, class diagrams and sequence diagrams. The UML approach is suitable if the system you are developing uses object-oriented techniques. This research completes a system that can predict future sales using two methods: double moving average and double exponential smoothing. The results of the two calculations are compared using the lowest MAPE percentage so that Mommy's Care can estimate the number of clothing items available for the following month.

With today's ever increasing pressures for bringing new products to market in ever shorter periods of time, companies may neglect to consider some of the key product design attributes-often called the -ilities-that affect the manufacturing process. When this happens, time to market is often extended because of the need for product redesign in order to improve manufacturing yields and quality or to lower product costs. One of the ways to reduce the number of product design iterations, or post-prototype engineering changes, is to design both the product and the manufacturing processes simultaneously. This requires involving all of the organization's pertinent engineering disciplines, in addition to marketing and support functions, right from the start of the project. Product Development Processes (PDPs) are essential to competitiveness and survival in several industries. The PDP comprised of multifunctional activities each one of them influenced by many internal and external factors that small changes during the process progress can lead to unexpected or even unstable behavior. Hence, the PDPs are highly complex and dynamic processes in nature. Many models such as Concurrent Engineering (CE), simultaneous Engineering (SE) and Integrated Product Development (IPD) are developed by the aim of managing the PDP successfully. There is a gap between the developed models using these traditional approaches and the real dynamic external land internal environment. The study presented in this paper conducted an analysis of existing solutions to the problem of concurrent optimisation of the design, and the process planning stages when a new product is developed is addressed. This paper describes an object-oriented manufacturing process information model in the Unified Modelling Language. The model comprises classes on the necessary manufacturing information, such as artefact, manufacturing activities, workpiece, manufacturing equipment, estimated cost and time, and manufacturing process sequences. The paper advocates for a simultaneous approach rather than the traditional sequential one.
