Enhancing Cyber Security in 6G Networks with Federated Learning for Collaborative Threat Mitigation

This paper analyzes the optimization features of machine learning (ML) model training procedures using multi-GPU systems to enhance cyber security in telecommunication networks. A key aspect of the study is the use of data parallelism, which allows the distribution of the training load across multiple GPUs, significantly reducing training time and improving model accuracy-critical factors for rapid threat detection in cyberspace. A novel approach for optimizing data batch size using Mutual Information (MI) is proposed, which harmonizes the utilization of computational resources with the information content of the training data. MI helps to determine the optimal data batch size that minimizes training errors and improves model accuracy without a significant increase in training time. Experimental results demonstrate the substantial advantages of multi-GPU configurations compared to single-GPU setups, providing faster training and improved model accuracy. It was particularly emphasized that MI-guided batch size tuning significantly outperforms traditional manual tuning methods, ensuring higher validation accuracy and reducing training time. The study showed that the MI-based approach is an effective tool for addressing the problem of optimizing ML model training processes in real-world scenarios where cyber security is critical. The proposed methods allow ML models to train faster and more accurately identify potential threats, making them particularly relevant for telecommunication networks where a rapid response to new threats in real time is required. The implementation of modern computational technologies such as multi-GPU systems and MI-optimized training enhances the efficiency and accuracy of machine learning models. This, in turn, improves cyber security measures and ensures a more reliable defence of telecommunication networks against malicious attacks. It is noted that the proposed approaches can be adapted not only for cyber security but also for other areas where high model accuracy and fast training are important. Future research prospects include the development of new machine learning methods, particularly deep neural networks, the exploration of alternative computational architectures such as quantum computing or distributed systems, and their integration into real-time systems. Special attention should be paid to the ethical aspects of implementing automated cyber security systems, particularly in preventing bias in algorithms and ensuring fairness in their application.

With the fast development of 5G networks, the need to ensure that these networks are secured against cyber threats, which are advanced and constantly evolving, is of immense importance. In this paper, an intrusion detection system based on deep learning using a hybrid Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) architecture is introduced to meet the security requirements of 5G wireless networks. The model also showed high accuracy, precision, and recall when training and testing on various publicly available datasets (CICIDS 2017 and NSL-KDD) by identifying different types of attacks, namely Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS), SQL Injection, and Advanced Persistent Threats (APT). Findings reveal that the CNN-LSTM model performs better compared to standard machine learning models such as Support Vector Machines (SVM) and Decision Tree, scoring high with regard to detection abilities and optimizing computing requirements. The model is an effective intrusion detection method in real-time despite training time and latency issues, it is a very useful solution to the fast-developing intrusion detection scenario involving the dynamic 5G network. The study offers an insight into the possibility of deep learning methods in boosting cybersecurity in 5G networks and lays the foundation for newer advances in network security systems. With the advent of 6G networks on the horizon, ensuring trustworthiness in communication systems becomes paramount. This chapter proposes a novel approach leveraging GAL to fortify the security and reliability of 6G networks. In traditional network security paradigms, adversaries exploit vulnerabilities, necessitating constant reactive measures. However, the proactive nature of GANs enables the creation of realistic synthetic data to train robust Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS). By simulating diverse attack scenarios, a GAN-based IDS can identify and adapt to emerging threats, mitigating potential risks in real time. Moreover, GANs facilitate the generation of synthetic network traffic, enabling thorough testing of network defenses without risking actual data. Taking a proactive stance enables network operators to predict and preempt potential vulnerabilities before they are exploited. Our solution involves harnessing the power of Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) to address 6G network security comprehensively. GANs create authentic network traffic, allowing IDS to be trained effectively in identifying and mitigating actual cyberthreats. Moreover, GANs can learn to discern typical network patterns, thus alerting to potential anomalies that may signify ongoing or imminent attacks. This proactive strategy empowers security teams to maintain an edge in navigating the constantly evolving cyberthreat landscape.

Vehicular Ad-Hoc Networks (VANETs) are an important aspect of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) because they allow vehicles and roads to communicate with each other in real time. which makes roads safer and traffic flow better. As a result of being dynamic and decentralized, VANETs are vulnerable to major cybersecurity concerns such Sybil attacks, denial-of-service (DoS) attacks, and routing manipulation. In these cases, typical security processes usually stay the same. This paper looks at how to employ bio-inspired algorithms like Ant Colony Optimization (ACO), Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), and Bee Algorithms to make VANET safer by using secure routing, intrusion detection, and anomaly monitoring. We also proposed a hybrid security system that combines blockchain-based decentralized trust management with swarm intelligence. Swarm algorithms enable you identify and update things in real time, while blockchain technology makes sure that trust and behavior data are always shared and can be checked across the network. This paper, developed within the European SAND5G project, integrates Snort intrusion detection with a risk assessment framework to dynamically evaluate threats and their impact on 5 G infrastructure. Our solution processes intrusion alerts in real-time, correlating them with risk metrics to assess severity and guide mitigation strategies. Preliminary findings indicate improved threat detection accuracy and enhanced incident response, reinforcing cybersecurity in next-generation networks.

The growing reliance on cloud platforms has introduced a heightened need for robust cybersecurity measures. Traditional security methods, while effective, struggle to keep pace with evolving cyber threats. Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) have emerged as transformative tools in enhancing cloud security, offering dynamic and automated approaches to threat detection, prevention, and response. This paper explores the critical role of AI and ML in addressing key cybersecurity challenges within cloud environments. It reviews various AI/ML techniques such as supervised learning, deep learning, and reinforcement learning, demonstrating their effectiveness in identifying vulnerabilities and responding to sophisticated cyberattacks. Through a discussion of real-world case studies, the paper highlights the advantages of integrating AI/ML models in cloud security architectures. Additionally, the paper identifies existing limitations, such as adversarial attacks on AI systems and ethical concerns related to data privacy. Finally, it outlines future directions for leveraging AI/ML in creating proactive, adaptive, and secure cloud environments.

The usage of these inefficient authentication schemes during 5G handovers lead to performance degradation in heterogeneous cells and increases the delay. In addition, 5G networks experience frequent handover failures and increased handover delays. Consequently, the provision of strong security, privacy and low latency handovers is required for the successful deployment of 5G networks such as 5G wireless local area networks (5G-WLAN) heterogeneous networks. These new requirements, coupled with demands for higher scalability, reliability, security, data rates, quality of service (QoS), and support for internet of everything (IoE) have seen the shift from 5G to beyond 5G (B5G). However, 5G and B5G are incapable of providing the complete requirements of IoE such as enhanced security and QoS. This paper sought to develop an ANN-FL protocol that addressed both security and QoS in 5G and B5G networks. This process will need to be done for all organizational systems, and data, and it will need to be done in all access contexts. Our approach uses formal methods to model and examine end-users security-related behaviors. Researchers have found that the users’ security decisions correlate with factors including demographics, personality traits, decision-making styles, and risk-taking preferences. We describe these behaviors by using Finite-State Automata (FSA). This allows for the automated formulation of linear-time security properties based on Timed Computation Tree Logic (TCTL). The logic is then used to check the satisfaction of collected and observed security behaviors against policy. This formal behavioral analysis could be combined with other security and network data during the context analysis process that needs to occur for each Zero Trust access request. Other network or host security data could include address identifiers, tokens, event data, packet inspection, running process data, cyber threat intelligence, and much more. Our method allows organizations that embrace a Zero Trust philosophy to generate context specific security policies that can be automatically verified for correctness and completion.

This paper reviews the cyber security in VANET and proposes an asset-based approach for VANET security. Firstly, it identifies relevant assets in VANET. Secondly, it provides a detailed taxonomy of vulnerabilities and threats on these assets, and, lastly, it classifies the possible attacks in VANET and critically evaluates them.

Classical Information Technology (IT) systems and Operational Technology (OT) are quickly converging technically. In order to perform an analysis of the current security situation of manufacturing companies in Germany, an empirical survey has been conducted with companies of different sizes ranging from small and medium-sized enterprises to large enterprises of the DAX-30. The companies are mainly from the area of discrete manufacturing. The survey has been performed either by individual interviews or by an online questionnaire. The main analysis results as well as other findings and conclusions are presented in this work.
