Abstract

Grammatical error correction (GEC) is a pivotal task in natural language processing, yet the performance of traditional supervised correction models is fundamentally constrained by the scale and quality of available training data. To address this limitation, a prevailing remedy is knowledge distillation, wherein a high-capacity “teacher” imparts its corrective expertise to a “student”. However, existing distillation-based GEC approaches exhibit two key limitations: (1) These methods neglect the complementary strengths of diverse, multi-source teacher models and fail to iteratively refine the student’s knowledge; (2) Such approaches depend on the insufficient assumption that the teacher invariably outperforms the student, thereby risking the injection of “toxic knowledge” whenever this assumption is violated. To tackle these issues, we propose a novel GEC framework that integrates Continuous Knowledge Distillation (CKD) with a scoring mechanism and reinforcement-learning-based rewards. CKD enables the student to sequentially absorb complementary insights from multiple teachers while maintaining prior knowledge, the scoring mechanism provides fine-grained evaluation and filtering of teacher outputs, and the reinforcement learning component use of negative example learning aims to maximize the avoidance of the student model acquiring knowledge that the teacher model is not good at, i.e., ”toxic knowledge”. Experiments on Chinese and English benchmarks demonstrate that our approach not only faithfully captures the collective strengths of distilled teachers but also significantly improves student GEC accuracy. Moreover, it remains robust against malicious or adversarial teacher inputs, highlighting its practical value for real-world error correction tasks.
