Explainable AI in Cyber Security: Enhancing Model Transparency

Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools are promising multifaceted techniques for addressing the most mundane tasks for greater efficiency and high productivity. Cyber security space is one of the areas that AI is promising to revolutionize. This study will develop a conceptual and theoretical framework to support a research design that can simulate research in understanding how AI can be applied to Cyber Kill Chain phases. This study has reviewed 21 journal and conference articles mostly from IEEE Xplore database. An overview of the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in cybersecurity, particularly within the framework of the Cyber Kill Chain was provided in this study. It also emphasizes the limitations of traditional security approaches and the necessity for innovative and intelligent defense methodologies. The results of reviewing the relevant literatures discovered that the key components of cybersecurity, includes identity, asset management, automated configuration management, security control validation, governance, risk assessment, and vulnerability identification. A theoretical framework was developed which introduces the Cyber Kill Chain model with a Unified Kill Chain model to address its shortcomings. Application of AI in cybersecurity offers an optimistic solutions to address the evolving threat landscape. AI techniques, such as machine learning, anomaly detection, and behavioural analysis, have shown great potential in enhancing various aspects of cybersecurity. However, challenges related to data quality, adversarial attacks, and privacy concerns need to be addressed for successful implementation. Further research and development are crucial to fully harness the power of AI in cybersecurity and stay ahead of evolving cyber threats.

With the Industry 4.0 revolution, modern organizations and their ecosystems are evolving rapidly. The cyberattack surface is growing simultaneously, thus enabling new cyberattacks that cannot be resolved by human intervention alone. Artificial intelligence (AI) has now become an essential tool that provides security as it has the potential to easily analyze billions of data and triangulate an array of possible cyberattacks that can range from active attacks like network exploitation or suspicious behavior such as eavesdropping, traffic analysis. An AI continues to learn from datasets, improve its models based on historic data and use those experiences to better recognize different types of attacks. Artificial intelligence has a great impact on the cyber security industry by predicting and preventing attacks before they even occur. In the Tokyo Olympics 2021, 450 million cyberattacks were attempted during the entirety of the events, but with the help of AI, none of the attacks affected the tournament because AI predicted attacks a week before it happened. AI has been helping with improved cyber security which would not have been achieved by human component alone. A recent survey done in IBM and Capgemini shows that 95% of security breaches arise due to human error alone. Forty-eight % executives in Capgemini use AI for threat detection, 18% say that it is used for response and 34% make use of AI for prediction. In the era of ever-evolving attacks and rapid increase in number of devices, AI and machine learning can aid in keeping track of attacks, help in threat detection automation, provide effective response to data exploitation, conduct network vulnerability surveillance, generate effective incident and response reports, form cyber threat intelligence reports, which are a few applications of AI in cyber security. As with every technology, AI comes with certain limitations too. Though it contributes to a high degree of accuracy and machine performance, there still exist certain levels of risk like producing false positives and negatives while detecting threats in a network. Using adversarial machine learning techniques to exploit the dataset of an AI and train it to mislead the application into believing threat activities are normal data is a possibility.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing the world we live in. It holds significant promise for improving performance across various sectors. Researchers worldwide have been working on developing solutions that leverage this technology for application by diverse user groups. A key category of AI is healthcare AI; smart solutions designed to address the needs of various stakeholders in the sector, from medical practitioners to patients. Crucial for any AI deployment are good adoption rates from the intended users and support from key stakeholders. Therefore, understanding the factors that influence its adoption is essential. This paper aims to provide insights through a systematic literature review of research related to healthcare AI adoption. Specifically, it reports on research works from ASEAN countries published over the past decade, between 2014 and 2024, identified through a systematic search of the Lens.org database. The search string focused on terms such as “Artificial Intelligence,” “Medical,” “Healthcare,” “Explainable,” “Transparency,” “Trust,” and “Adoption.” The motivation for this search stems from developments in Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI). XAI is vital for fostering trust and facilitating the widespread adoption of AI-driven clinical decision support systems (CDSS) in healthcare. While AI has the potential to augment clinical decision-making, the lack of transparency in traditional “black box” models can undermine trust and hinder adoption. XAI techniques aim to make AI systems more interpretable by providing explanations and visualizations of the decision-making process. This transparency is essential for overcoming skepticism and encouraging the adoption of CDSS in clinical practice. The findings of this review will offer insights into the current research landscape in the region and inform future research on the adoption and use of healthcare AI. These issues are particularly relevant in the ASEAN context, where varying levels of digital literacy and healthcare infrastructure necessitate explainable and transparent AI to build user trust and support effective integration.

The AIQUSEC (AI-based quantum secure cyber security automation and orchestration in the edge intelligence of future networks) brings measurable advances to the cyber security of access and edge networks and their services, as well as Operational Service Technologies (OT). The research aims for significant cybersecurity scalability, efficiency, and effectiveness of operations through improved and enhanced device and sensor securities, security assurance, quantum security, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) based automation solutions. The new application scenarios of near future, the multiple stakeholders within each scenario, and the higher data volumes raise the need for novel cybersecurity solutions. Recently, OT cybersecurity threat landscape has become wider, due to the increase digitalization of services, the increase in virtualization and slicing of networks, as well as the increase in advanced cyber-attacks. Because of recent advances in computing power, AI in cybersecurity analyzing and validations is now becoming a reality. A significant part of currently used encryption technologies which secures communications and infrastructures might become instantly penetrable when quantum computing becomes available. Enabling quantum-safety migration development is a clear goal to the project. The research develops a state-of-the-art information security verification and validation environment that supports the integration of cyber security systems as a reference model, focusing on architectural choices and network connection from different vertical use cases. With the help of the platform and the reference model, common cybersecurity capabilities and requirements can be built, tested, and validated, as well as their fulfillment. In addition to the environment mentioned above, the results of the research are demonstrated and utilized in critical communication systems, water utilities, industrial environments, in physical access solutions and remote work. The developed platform can also be used for auditing devices, systems, and software’s in the future. The research integrates new quantum-safe artificial intelligence-based, hardware-hardened, and scalable cybersecurity solutions that have been validated in a standardized way. In this research, we also deal with the requirements of the EU sustainable growth program - issues related to the green transition.

Explainable AI (XAI) addresses this challenge by providing interpretability and transparency in AI-driven cybersecurity solutions. This paper explores the role of XAI in malware analysis and network intrusion detection, highlighting how interpretable models enhance trust, improve decision-making, and facilitate regulatory compliance. It examines state-of-the-art XAI techniques, including Shapley Additive Explanations (SHAP), Local Interpretable Model-agnostic Explanations (LIME), and rule-based systems, for their application in identifying malicious software and detecting network anomalies. Furthermore, the paper discusses challenges, such as computational overhead and scalability, while presenting future directions for integrating XAI in real-time and hybrid security frameworks.
