Exponential sums, codes, and Hermitian forms

We study the parameters of codes spanned by quadratic and Hermitian forms in projective space. The resulting codes have high minimum distance and few distinct weights. An example is a new ternary [91.9,54] code.

We give upper bounds for the absolute value of exponential sums in several variables attached to certain polynomials with coefficients in a finite field. This bounds are given in terms of invariants of the singularities of the projective hypersurface defined by its highest degree form. For exponential sums attached to the reduction modulo a power of a large prime of a polynomial f with integer coefficients and veryfying a certain condition on the singularities of its highest degree form, we give a bound in terms of the dimension of the Jacobian quotient .

Given an Azumaya algebra with involution $$(A,\sigma )$$ over a commutative ring R and some auxiliary data, we construct an 8-periodic chain complex involving the Witt groups of $$(A,\sigma )$$ and other algebras with involution, and prove it is exact when R is semilocal. When R is a field, this recovers an 8-periodic exact sequence of Witt groups of Grenier-Boley and Mahmoudi, which in turn generalizes exact sequences of Parimala–Sridharan–Suresh and Lewis. We apply this result in several ways: We establish the Grothendieck–Serre conjecture on principal homogeneous bundles and the local purity conjecture for certain outer forms of $${\mathbf {GL}}_n$$ and $${\mathbf {Sp}}_{2n}$$ , provided some assumptions on R. We show that a 1-hermitian form over a quadratic étale or quaternion Azumaya algebra over a semilocal ring R is isotropic if and only if its trace (a quadratic form over R) is isotropic, generalizing a result of Jacobson. We also apply it to characterize the kernel of the restriction map $$W(R)\rightarrow W(S)$$ when R is a (non-semilocal) 2-dimensional regular domain and S is a quadratic étale R-algebra, generalizing a theorem of Pfister. In the process, we establish many fundamental results concerning Azumaya algebras with involution and hermitian forms over them.

Quadratic forms and Hermitian forms

For each positive integer n n , let g Z ( n ) g_\mathbb {Z}(n) be the smallest integer such that if an integral quadratic form in n n variables can be written as a sum of squares of integral linear forms, then it can be written as a sum of g Z ( n ) g_\mathbb {Z}(n) squares of integral linear forms. We show that every positive definite integral quadratic form is equivalent to what we call a balanced Hermite–Korkin–Zolotarev-reduced form and use it to show that the growth of g Z ( n ) g_\mathbb {Z}(n) is at most an exponential of n \sqrt {n} . Our result improves the best known upper bound on g Z ( n ) g_\mathbb {Z}(n) which is on the order of an exponential of n n . We also define an analogous number g O ∗ ( n ) g_{\mathcal O}^*(n) for writing Hermitian forms over the ring of integers O \mathcal O of an imaginary quadratic field as sums of norms of integral linear forms, and when the class number of the imaginary quadratic field is 1 1 , we show that the growth of g O ∗ ( n ) g_{\mathcal O}^*(n) is at most an exponential of n \sqrt {n} . We also improve on results of both Conway and Sloane and Kim and Oh on s s -integrable lattices.

In these lectures we give an introduction to the reduction theory of binary forms starting with quadratic forms with real coefficients, Hermitian forms, and then define the Julia quadratic for any degree n binary form. A survey of a reduction algorithm over ${\mathbb{Z}}$ is described based on recent work of Cremona and Stoll.

The Kobayashi indicatrix (infinitesimal unit ball) of a domain in IE n is known to be a biholomorphic invariant. In particular, if a domain is biholomorphic to a ball, then the indicatrix is the ball. Until the recent deep results of Lempert [4], it was not known to what extent the indicatrix characterizes the domain. Sibony had shown earlier that the indicatrix of any pseudoconvex circular domain is the domain itself [10]; hence the indicatrix determines such domains up to biholomorphism. This is not true in general. Lempert has shown that, for smoothly bounded strictly convex domains, three invariants determine the domain up to biholomorphism and a linear change of variables at a base point. These invariants consist of not only the Kobayashi indicatrix but also a quadratic form and a hermitian form on a certain vector bundle. In two dimensions, there is an open set in a Frechet space, corresponding to domains not biholomorphic to the ball but with indicatrix the ball. The result of this paper is that, for ellipsoids, if the Kobayashi indicatrix is the ball then the ellipsoid is biholomorphic to the ball. This is proved in the following equivalent form: if an ellipsoid symmetric about 0 is not biholomorphic to the ball, then its infinitesimal Kobayashi metric at 0 is not hermitian. In this language, our result answers a question posed by Reiffen in [7] about the differential-geometric nature of the Carath6odory metric for ellipsoids. By two results of Lempert ([3] and [2]), for strictly convex domains the Carathe6dory and Kobayashi metrics coincide and determine a Finsler metric. One now sees that, for ellipsoids, the metric is not hermitian and hence, by a theorem of Reiffen [7], not Riemannian. We prove that the infinitesimal Kobayashi metric at 0 is not hermitian by proving that the parallelogram law fails to hold. Hermitian forms and locally toroidal regular polytopes

We show that any stabilizer code over a finite field is equivalent to a graphical quantum code. Furthermore we prove that a graphical quantum code over a finite field is a stabilizer code. The technique used in the proof establishes a new connection between quantum codes and quadratic forms.

The classical quadratic Gauss sum can be thought of as an exponential sum attached to a quadratic form on a cyclic group. We introduce an equivariant version of Gauss sum for arbitrary finite quadratic forms, which is an exponential sum twisted by the action of the orthogonal group. We prove that simple arithmetic formulas hold for some basic classes of quadratic forms. In applications, such invariant appears in the dimension formula for certain vector-valued modular forms.

We determine the geometric monodromy groups attached to various families, both one-parameter and multi-parameter, of exponential sums over finite fields, or, more precisely, the geometric monodromy groups of the $\ell $ -adic local systems on affine spaces in characteristic $p&gt; 0$ whose trace functions are these exponential sums. The exponential sums here are much more general than we previously were able to consider. As a byproduct, we determine the number of irreducible components of maximal dimension in certain intersections of Fermat surfaces. We also show that in any family of such local systems, say parameterized by an affine space S, there is a dense open set of S over which the geometric monodromy group of the corresponding local system is a fixed known group.

Representations by Hermitian forms in a finite field

In attempting to clear the ground for an attack on the problem of relative maxima and miniima of two quadratic or hermitian forms with aii infinite number of variables, the author found that various questions insistently arose concerning the equivalence of pairs of forms in a finite number of variables and their reduction to normal type. The methods of attack in this theory as set forth in the literature seem to lack systematic unity. Not only are different devices employed for the treatment of the various phases of the problem, but these devices vary for different cases of the same phase. In investigating the problem of maxima and minima the author uncovered fundamental principles which may serve as a new interpretation of the problem of equivalence and make possible a iiew and more unified conception of the treatment. Let q q be a power of an odd prime, and F q [ T ] \mathbb {F}_q[T] be the ring of polynomials over a finite field F q \mathbb {F}_q of q q elements. A quadratic form f f over F q [ T ] \mathbb {F}_q[T] is said to be regular if f f globally represents all polynomials that are represented by the genus of f f . In this paper, we study definite regular quadratic forms over F q [ T ] \mathbb {F}_q[T] . It is shown that for a fixed q q , there are only finitely many equivalence classes of regular definite primitive quadratic forms over F q [ T ] \mathbb {F}_q[T] , regardless of the number of variables. Characterizations of those which are universal are also given.

For all types of quadratic forms, the cross-correlations between geometric sequences and the newly defined quadratic form sequences are determined to extend the results presented by Klapper in 1993 and 1997. The technique for computing cross-correlations is based on counting the number of solutions for a system of equations that consists of a quadratic form and a linear function.
