In recent years there has been some interest in rank2 algebraic (or holomorphic) vector bundles over the complex projective space pn. One of the main reasons for this interest is the connection of such bundles with projective varieties of codimension 2 and in particular with the question whether such varieties are necessarily complete intersections. In [2] Hartshorne formulates the conjecture that every rank2 algebraic bundle over pn splits as the sum of 2 line bundles at least if n > 7. Rank 2 bundles over pa are classified topologically by their Chern classes cl, c 2. In [1] Atiyah and Rees carry out the topological classification for p3 and show the existence of "sufficiently many" rank 2 topological bundles over p4. On p2 and p3 every topological 2-plane bundle has an algebraic structure. It is not known whether this is true for n > 4. In [6] and [-7] non-trivial 2-plane bundles are constructed over P", n>5 , with c a = c 2 = 0 . These are possible candidates for topological bundles without algebraic structure. In this paper we carry the classification of topological 2-plane bundles over P~ a few steps further. Although this by no means solves the classification problem for algebraic bundles, we hope the results may be of some use to those interested in algebraic bundles and projective varieties. In the following we shall not distinguish between a map f:X~BU(2), its homotopy:class and the induced isomorphism class of rank 2 bundles. Thus we shall often write r/$X or q :X~BU(2) . Algebraic Vector Bundles

A generalization of the notion of almost complex structure is defined on a nonorientable smooth manifold M of even dimension. It is defined by giving an isomorphism J from the tangent bundle TM to the tensor product of the tangent bundle with the orientation bundle such that J○J=−Id TM . The composition J○J is realized as an automorphism of TM using the fact that the orientation bundle is of order two. A notion of integrability of this almost complex structure is defined; also the Kahler condition has been extended. The usual notion of a complex vector bundle is generalized to the nonorientable context. It is a real vector bundle of even rank such that the almost complex structure of a fiber is given up to the sign. Such bundles have generalized Chern classes. These classes take value in the cohomology of the tensor power of the local system defined by the orientation bundle. The notion of a holomorphic vector bundle is extended to the context under consideration. Stable vector bundles and Einstein–Hermitian connections are also generalized. It is shown that a generalized holomorphic vector bundle on a compact nonorientable Kahler manifold admits an Einstein–Hermitian connection if and only if it is polystable.

Combinatorial ideas are developed in this article to study Chern numbers on ample and numerically effective vector bundles. An effective lower bound for Chern numbers of ample vector bundles is established, which makes some progress toward a long-standing question. Along this line we prove that Chern numbers on nef vector bundles obey reverse dominance ordering, which improves upon some classical and recent results. We propose a simultaneous positivity question on (signed) Chern numbers of compact complex or Kähler manifolds whose (co)tangent bundles are semipositive in various senses, and show that it holds true for compact homogeneous complex manifolds.

A line bundle over a complex projective variety is called big and 1-ample if a large multiple of it is generated by global sections and a morphism induced by the evaluation of the spanning sections is generically finite and has at most 1-dimensional fibers. A vector bundle is called big and 1-ample if the relative hyperplane line bundle over its projectivisation is big and 1-ample. The main theorem of the present paper asserts that any complex projective manifold of dimension 4 or more, whose tangent bundle is big and 1-ample, is equal either to a projective space or to a smooth quadric. Since big and 1-ample bundles are ‘almost’ ample, the present result is yet another extension of the celebrated Mori paper ‘Projective manifolds with ample tangent bundles’ (Ann. of Math. 110 (1979) 593–606). The proof of the theorem applies results about contractions of complex symplectic manifolds and of manifolds whose tangent bundles are numerically effective. An overview about C*-algebra bundles with a ℤ-grading is presented, with particular emphasis on classification questions. In particular, we discuss the role of the representable KK(X;−,−)-bifunctor introduced by Kasparov. As an application, we consider Cuntz-Pimsner algebras associated with vector bundles, and give a classification in terms of K-theoretical invariants in the case in which the base space is an n-sphere.

It is well-known (see e.g. [3]) that a torsion-free connection on a connected smooth manifold M is a Riemannian connection of a Riemannian metric g if and only if its holonomy group (with a fixed reference point ) preserves a positive scalar product on the tangent space . In this paper we are occupied with the corresponding computational problems: a) How to decide effectively whether a given (torsion-free) connection is a Riemannian connection? b) In the positive case, how to find out effectively all corresponding Riemannian metrics (in the prescribed local coordinates) We shall solve both problems under the restriction that the basic manifold M is connected and simply connected, and that both M and the given connection are analytic. Let us note that the problems above have been solved for very special cases in [l], [2], and in more general terms by the author in [4] and [5], where some kind of regularity for the curvature tensor was assumed. See also [6] and [7] for related results.

In this paper, we address the completeness problem of certain classes of Riemannian metrics on vector bundles. We first establish a general result on the completeness of the total space of a vector bundle when the projection is a horizontally conformal submersion with a bound condition on the dilation function, and in particular when it is a Riemannian submersion. This allows us to give completeness results for spherically symmetric metrics on vector bundle manifolds and eventually for the class of Cheeger-Gromoll and generalized Cheeger-Gromoll metrics on vector bundle manifolds. Moreover, we study the completeness of a subclass of g-natural metrics on tangent bundles and we extend the results to the case of unit tangent sphere bundles. Our proofs are mainly based on techniques of metric topology and on the Hopf-Rinow theorem.

For natural numbers and a complete classification of natural transformations over -manifolds is given, where is the linear -tangent bundle functor.

Effective representation methods and proper signal priors are crucial in most signal processing applications. In this thesis we focus on different structured models and we design appropriate schemes that allow the discovery of low dimensional latent structures that characterise and identify the signals. Motivated by the highly non-linear structure of most datasets, we firstly investigate the geometry of manifolds. Manifolds are low dimensional, non-linear structures that are naturally employed to describe sets of strongly related signals such as the images of a 3-D object captured from different viewpoints. However, the use of manifolds in applications is not straightforward due to their usually non-analytic and non-linear form. We propose here a way to `disassemble' a manifold into simpler components by approximating it with affine subspaces. Our objective is to discover a set of low dimensional affine subspaces that can represent manifold data accurately while preserving the manifold's structure. To this end, we employ a greedy technique that iteratively merges manifold samples into groups based on the difference of local tangents. We use our algorithm to approximate synthetic and real manifolds and to demonstrate that it is competitive to state-of-the-art techniques. Then, we consider structured sparse representations of signals and we propose a new sparsity model, where signals are essentially composed of a small number of structured {\it molecules }. We define the molecules to be linear combinations of a small number of atoms in a redundant dictionary. Our multi-level model takes into account the energy distribution of the significant signal components in addition to their support. It permits to define typical visual patterns and recognise them in prototypical or deformed form. We define a new structural difference measure between molecules and their deformed versions, which is based on their sparse codes and we create an algorithm for decomposing signals into molecules that can account for different deviations in the internal molecule structure. Our experiments verify the benefits of the new image model in various restoration tasks and they confirm that the development of proper models that extend the mere notion of sparsity can be very useful for various inverse problems in imaging. Finally, we investigate the problem of learning molecule representations directly in the sparse code domain. We constrain sparse codes to be linear combinations of a few, possibly deformed, molecules and we design an algorithm that can learn the structure from the codes without transforming them back into the signal domain. To this end, we take advantage of our structural difference which is based on the sparse codes and we devise a scheme for representing the codes with molecules and learn the molecules at the same time. To illustrate the effectiveness of our proposed algorithm we apply it to various synthetic and real datasets and we compare the results with traditional sparse coding and dictionary learning techniques. From the experiments, we verify the superior performance of our scheme in interpreting and recognising correctly the underlying structure. In short, in this thesis we are interested in low-dimensional, structured models. Among the various choices, we focus on manifolds and sparse representations and we propose schemes that enhance their structural properties and highlight their effectiveness in signal representations.

On a complex manifold, a co-Higgs bundle is a holomorphic vector bundle with an endomorphism twisted by the tangent bundle. The notion of generalized holomorphic bundle in Hitchin's generalized geometry coincides with that of co-Higgs bundle when the generalized complex manifold is ordinary complex. Schwarzenberger's rank-2 vector bundle on the projective plane, constructed from a line bundle on the double cover CP^1 \times CP^1 \to CP^2, is naturally a co-Higgs bundle, with the twisted endomorphism, or "Higgs field", also descending from the double cover. Allowing the branch conic to vary, we find that Schwarzenberger bundles give rise to an 8-dimensional moduli space of co-Higgs bundles. After studying the deformation theory for co-Higgs bundles on complex manifolds, we conclude that a co-Higgs bundle arising from a Schwarzenberger bundle with nonzero Higgs field is rigid, in the sense that a nearby deformation is again Schwarzenberger.

A note on the topology of irreducible SO(3)-manifolds

In this paper we construct Stiefel-Whitney and Euler classes in Chow cohomology for algebraic vector bundles with nondegenerate quadratic form. These classes are not in the algebra generated by the Chern classes of such bundles and are new characteristic classes in algebraic geometry. On complex varieties, they correspond to classes with the same name pulled back from the cohomology of the classifying space BSO(N,C). The classes we construct are the only new characteristic classes in algebraic geometry coming from the classical groups ([T2], [EG]). We begin by using the geometry of quadric bundles to study Chern classes of maximal isotropic subbundles. If V → X is a vector bundle with quadratic form, and if E and F are maximal isotropic subbundles of V then we prove (Theorem 1) that ci(E) and ci(F ) are equal mod 2. Moreover, if the rank of V is 2n, then cn(E) = ±cn(F ), proving a conjecture of Fulton. We define Stiefel-Whitney and Euler classes as Chow cohomology classes which pull back to Chern classes of maximal isotropic subbundles of the pullback bundle. Using the above theorem we show (Theorem 2) that these classes exist and are unique, even though V need not have a maximal isotropic subbundle. These constructions also make it possible to give “Schubert” presentations,
