The relationship between system theory and the product design, the process of product development has been described. It compared the merits and demerits of serial and parallel product development processes and, with the guidelines of system theory, put forward and analyzed the planning actions and corresponding necessity existed in the indistinct initial phase in product development process. It also analyzed the optimizing effect of planning actions in product design & development process. Thus, it obtained the model of product design & development process based on system theory so as to clarify the indistinct initial phase, shorten product development time and, improve the effectiveness of enterprise's product development.

In the current metal-forming product design and development paradigm, product cost, time-to-market, and product quality are three overriding issues, which determine the competitiveness of the developed products. In up-front design process, the first 20 % of design activities commits to more than 75 % of product development cost and product quality issues. How to conduct “design right the first time” is critical to ensure low product development cost, high product quality, and short time-to-market. To address these issues, state-of-the-art technologies are needed to support design solution generation, evaluation, and optimization in metal-forming product design and development. Traditionally, computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) technologies provide approaches for representation and realization of design solutions physically [1]. However, how to generate design solution and conduct design solution evaluation and optimization is a non-trivial issue. In metal-forming product design and development, it is difficult to simultaneously address the design issues related to metal-formed part design, forming process determination, process parameter configuration, tooling structure design, material selection, prediction of the properties of deformed part, and finally the product quality control and assurance. In addition, how to reveal, assess, and evaluate the interaction and interplay of different design variables or factors in the above-mentioned different stages and areas is another critical issue. Computer-aided engineering (CAE) technology fills this gap as it helps practitioners generate, evaluate, and optimize design solutions before the best design solution is feasibly and uniquely identified and practically and physically implemented. In the current metal-forming product development paradigm, CAE simulation technology is one of the state-of-the-art technologies, which has been widely used in addressing the above-mentioned technical issues and will be used to solve the emerging bottleneck problems in the next upward trend of technology and product development.

The aim of this article was to express social and economic aspects of the sustainable livestock production in relation to meat consumption in the Czech Republic and to predict the possibilities of further development of livestock production in the conditions of Czech agriculture. With the accession of Czechia to the EU (2004), the structure of Czech agriculture changed to the detriment of livestock production. The decisive sectors of livestock production are pig breeding, cattle breeding and poultry farming. This article (contribution) analyzes trends in the development of production in the basic categories of livestock, and it evaluates the degree of self-sufficiency of the economy in the given sector of agricultural production and the consumption of individual types of meat in Czechia. Using Holt’s model of statistical analysis, it then predicts the future consumption of meat and its individual types in the Czech Republic in the years 2020–2024. As research has shown, the sustainable development of livestock production and meat consumption in the Czech Republic depends not only on the mutual size of meat production and consumption or its quality, but also significantly on the market prices of meat (including world prices), as well as changes in eating habits of the population.

During the New Product Development (NPD) cycle, it is important to focus and integrate relevant information into the stages of product conceptualisation, design and development so that they can be used for product and process design effectively. In this paper, a Generic Product and Process Development System (GPDS), which integrates knowledge-based technologies of Rule-Based Expert System (RBES) and Case-Based Reasoning (CBR), is proposed to facilitate product and process development. Although RBES is adopted for sorting product design criteria, relevant past cases are retrieved by the CBR system during product and process design stages. In doing so, previous knowledge in terms of rules and past practices will be made use of during the product and process design stages, resulting in an enhancement of the efficiency of design and operations. By applying GPDS in Hasbro Fast East Limited, the new product design life cycle is greatly shortened with significant reduction in the total development cost.

For a rapid configuration of a given product development process, taking into account today unavoidable market’s requirements as is the integrated product, process and manufacturing system development considering their entire lifecycles, in this paper, an enterprise holistic framework, consisting in a three dimensional model, is described to support the model driven architecture (MDA) concept for global product development projects (GPDP). The holistic framework has been established based on the integration of three fundamental areas of research: concurrent engineering (CE), product lifecycle, and enterprise integration engineering (EIE). The integration of these three fields of knowledge, using a 3D holistic framework, generates a solid support for a model driven architecture. As a result, through a 3D matrix, more important elements of the product development process can be combined and modeled following their natural interactions through the project realization. Questions about a global product development project like: What needs to be developed? Who will develop it? Where will be developed? How will be developed? When is being developed? can be generated during the planning and execution of the project but, as part of this research effort, these questions are answered in an organized manner using the proposed enterprise holistic framework. The conceptual model (enterprise holistic framework) for the global product development project was established as a base to capture, store and configure a project including the integration of product, manufacturing process and manufacturing system development considering their entire lifecycles in the enterprise context.

Great part of the food industries in Brazil have found that the key for surviving in the market is the innovation of products. A new trend is the launching of products which besides having high sensorial and nutritional quality, they also present benefits associated with health, and are known as functional food. Among these products are the prebiotics, food ingredients that stimulate the growth and activity of bacteria which are beneficial to the health of the body. The aim of the present work is the development of a functional ready to bake dough for pies using inulin as a prebiotic. The development of this product was based on the tool QFD (Quality Function Deployment), and it was presented as a means to organize the development of new products, especially prototypes. Hence, studies, tests, and analysis suggested by the QFD were undertaken. According to the results of the matrix of quality obtained, it can be said that the characteristics that the consumers attribute as the most important for baking dough are: be functional, do not shatter, have a neutral flavor, and present uniform diameter and thickness. Consequently these characteristics were prioritized during the development of the product. The sensorial analysis indicated that the tasters really enjoyed all the quality attributes of the dough. On the other hand, the QFD proved useful for planning and conducting the necessary activities for the process of developing the product.

During the development of products with health claims the collaboration and interaction of several disciplines and independent partners is necessary such as the production, quality, marketing, legal functions of the company, the external providers of the knowledge on the constituent having the claimed physiological effect, the clinics carrying out the human intervention studies, statisticians, laboratories providing testing services, etc. This results in a higher dependency from each other and less flexibility compared to the development of a conventional product where mostly in-company functions work together. Therefore systematic coordination of the multiple interactions, careful design of the product and its development process is particularly important.

PurposeSupplier involvement in cost reduction efforts has been concentrated mainly in the product development phase of the life cycle of the product. Often this concentration on the early phases of the product life cycle is defended with referral to the 80/20 rule that says that 80 per cent of the manufacturing costs are determined or committed during product design and development. The purpose of this paper is to look for empirical evidence that supports this rule and discuss the limited literature on joint buyer/supplier cost reduction programmes beyond the product development stage of the product life cycle.Design/methodology/approachAn extensive literature survey on both the cost commitment rule and collaborative cost reduction programmes beyond the product development stage was conducted.FindingsIt was found that empirical evidence in the literature for the 80/20 rule on cost commitment in product design is only anecdotal. Even more surprisingly, compared to the literature on cost reduction in design phases, the literature on cost reduction efforts in later stages of the product life cycle is rather limited and usually ignores possibilities for supplier/buyer collaboration.Research limitations/implicationsFurther empirical research (suggestions provided) should assess whether the identified lack of evidence is due to a gap in the empirical literature or to lower degrees of cost commitment and attention to cost efforts beyond product design indeed existing in practice.Practical implicationsThis paper calls practitioners to revisit the cost commitment rule and check its existence in their specific contexts. As a result of this exercise, practitioners may want to consider implementing some of the techniques reviewed in the paper that can assist in collaborative cost reduction beyond the product development stage.Originality/valueGiven the amount of money involved, the general applicability of the cost reduction techniques to various industries and relationships with suppliers, the opportunities for huge savings and the fact that most firms usually have many products and/or technologies at maturity stage, my research makes an important contribution by identifying both a lack of empirical evidence in the literature on the notion that 80 per cent of the costs are committed in the design phase and the limited attention given in the literature to supplier/buyer cost reduction programmes in further stages of the product life cycle.

The demand for faster and more cost-effective product developments encouraged the creation of new project management platforms, designed to expedite and streamline new product development, R&D-to-market. Systems such as Design for Manufacture (DMF), Integrated Product and Process Development (IPPD), Structured Systems Design (SSD), Stage-Gate Processes, and perhaps the oldest and most widely used IPD concept of Concurrent Engineering (CE), all promise more flexible and more effective new product development processes. Yet, for many managers the results were mixed regarding overall project performance. The paper reports the findings of a three-year field study of over 60 complex technology-based product developments in 10 companies. The drivers and barriers toward cross-functional cooperation are examined together with the type of work processes, leadership style and organizational environment most conducive to effective product integration. Specific suggestions are being made for enhancing cross-functional linkages, involvement, commitment, communications and decision-making, factors that ultimately determine new product success

The supplier's participation in new product development can reduce the product cost and development risk, shorten the product development time and enhance the competitiveness of enterprises. Based on the study of supplier selection for product development, this paper analyzes three management types of supplier's participation in product development, and proposes the selection method of strategic supplier in the right time and degree.

Based on the theory of user needs and the product development mode and framework of mobile Internet interactive innovation, a new “reality → virtual → reality” interactive innovation product development mode is constructed. It draws on the unique characteristics, systematic technical system, and comprehensive scientific and technological layout of the Metaverse. On this basis, a framework for product development and design based on interactive innovation from the Metaverse perspective is innovatively proposed. In the Metaverse scenario, interactive innovation knowledge can be easily and effectively transformed into design knowledge, and all groups of users truly participate in the whole process of product design. Moreover, the development of interactive innovative products in the Metaverse scenario can be combined with artificial intelligence (AI) technology to further automate the statistical analysis of user needs and preferences so as to meet the dynamic needs of users and accurately develop products that fit user needs and enterprise standards. In addition, users, designers, and enterprises can make joint decisions on product design solutions and development forms, and the Metaverse technology can also optimize the products with continuous iteration and obtain the optimal solutions. An automotive case study illustrates the feasibility and effectiveness of the model for product development innovation and enterprise digital transformation.

In many industries, the survival of firms is increasingly determined by their success in new product development. At the same time, new product development is a risk and complex process. The main method of new product development that has been used by organizations for many years is team creation. At present, new product development teams are lack of effective ways to support creation. From the mid-1990s on, the infusion of information and communication technologies in product development has raised the importance of information technology in new product development. IT-enabled product development now has the potential to redefine the processes and outcomes of new product development. In this paper, we analyze the supports needed by new product development. Based on the requirement analysis, we design and realize the team creation support system for new product development. Moreover, the process of team creation support system application in new product development is analyzed.
