Face detection using Viola and Jones method and neural networks

Facial expression is a prominent posture beneath the skin of the face. They are the way of communication in humans which convey many things non-verbally. During the past years face recognition has received significant attention as one of the most important applications of image understanding and analysis. Many algorithms have been implemented on different static and non-static conditions. Static conditions include static and uniform background, identical poses, similar illumination, neutral frontal face. Non static conditions include position, partial occlusion orientation, varying lightening conditions and facial hair which make recognition process a complex problem. All these factors influence face recognition process. The main stages for face recognition include face detection, feature representation and classifications. Researchers have described distinct approaches for face recognition. In this work we present a glimpse of face detection techniques, methods used, their performance a their limitations and proposed a new technique for Face Detection based on Viola and Jones algorithm and principal component analysis. At the end we have shown simulation results for the proposed technique and established that proposed technique is performing better than the existing one. The proposed system is implemented in MATLAB version 7.1.4.0.739 (R2012a).

Automatic human face detection and recognition under non-uniform illumination

There has been much research on computer vision in last three decades. Computer vision methods have been developed for different situations. One example is a detection of human face. For computers face detection is hard. Faces look different from different viewing directions. Facial expressions affect to the look of the face. Each individual person has a unique face. The lightning conditions can vary and so on.However, face detection is currently possible in limited conditions. In addition, there are some methods that can be used for gender recognition [3], face recognition [5] and facial expression recognition [2].Nonetheless, there has been very little research on how to combine these methods. There has also been quite little research on how to apply these methods in human-computer interaction (HCI).Finding sets of techniques that complement each other in a useful way is one research challenge. There are some applications that take advantage of one or two computer vision techniques. For example, Christian and Avery [1] have developed an information kiosk that uses computer vision to detect potential users from a distance. A similar kiosk has been developed by us in the University of Tampere [4]. There are also some games that use simple computer vision techniques for the interaction. However, there are very few applications that use several computer vision techniques together such as face detection, facial expression recognition and gender recognition. Overall, there has been very little effort in combining different techniques.In my research I develop computer vision methods and combine them, so that the combined method can detect face, recognize gender and facial expressions. After successfully combining the methods, it is easier to develop HCI applications that take advantage of computer vision. Applications that can be used by small group of people are my specific interest. These applications allow me to build adaptive user interfaces and analyze the use of computer vision techniques in improving human-computer interaction.

Face recognition is among the most productive image processing applications and has a pivotal role in the technical field. In the recent time automated face recognition has become a trend and has been developed very much, this is mainly due to two reasons first it is due to availability of modern technologies and second is due to the ability to save time using face recognition in the process of taking attendance of students. Its usage will grow vast in the future as it saves a lot of time. It consumes a lot of time to take attendance manually and few might also fake the attendance, in order to prevent time consumption and avoid faking the attendance. Face recognition is used to identify the person present in the class and mark their attendance , this is done with the help of image or video frame. We proposed an automatic attendance management system using techniques such as PCA algorithm. The face detection and recognition will automatically detect the students in the classroom and mark the attendance by recognizing the person. The traditional process of making attendance and present biometric systems are vulnerable to proxies. This paper is therefore proposed to tackle all these problems. The proposed system makes the use of Haar classifiers, KNN, CNN, SVM, Generative adversarial networks, and Gabor filters. After face recognition attendance reports will be generated and stored in excel format. The system is tested under various conditions like illumination, head movements, the variation of distance between the student and cameras. After vigorous testing overall complexity and accuracy are calculated. The Proposed system proved to be an efficient and robust device for taking attendance in a classroom without any time consumption and manual work. The system developed is cost-efficient and need less installation

In the current scenario face identification and recognition is an important technique in surveillance. The face is a necessary biometric in humans. Therefore face detection plays a major job in computer vision applications. Several face recognition and emotions classification approaches have been presented throughout the last few decades of research to improve the rate of face recognition for thermal pictures. However, in real-time, lighting conditions might change due to several factors, such as the different times of capture, weather, etc. Due to variations in lighting intensity, the performance of the facial expression recognition system is not good. This paper proposed a model for human thermal face detection and expression classification. Four main steps were involved in this research. Initially, the Difference of the Gaussian (DOG) filter is utilized to crop the input thermal images and then normalize the images using the median filter in pre-processing step. Then, Efficient Net is used for extracting features such as shape, location, and occurrences from thermal face images. After that, detect human faces utilized by the YOLOv4 technique to better emotions classification. Finally, classify the emotions on faces by using the DenseNet technique into seven emotions such as happy, sad, disgust, surprise, anger, fear, and neutral. The proposed method outperforms state-of-art techniques for face recognition on thermal pictures, and classifies the expressions, according to experimentations on the RGB-D-T database. The accuracy, precision, recall, and f1-score metrics will be utilized with the database to assess the efficacy of the proposed methodology. The proposed models achieve a high classification accuracy of 95.97% on the RGB-D-T database. Furthermore, the outcomes show good precision for various face recognition tasks.

Recently, automatic face recognition method has become one of the key issues in the field of pattern recognition and artificial intelligence. Typically, the face recognition process can be divided into three parts: the detection and recognition of human face, facial feature extraction and face recognition, and among which the facial feature extraction is the key to face recognition technology. In this paper, an extraction algorithm of face recognition feature, which is based on face recognition feature, is proposed. The experimental results based on the ORL face database demonstrate that this algorithm works well.

Face detection is the first step in the face recognition system. The Neural network as well as Gabor wavelet based face detection is proposed in this paper. The proposed system applies neural network algorithm to make the slanting face upright and Gabor wavelet is used to extract the invariable features from the selected window. The principal component analysis is applied to identify the person from the data base. The Proposed system gives very high detection efficiency with low number of false alarms. We have shown the results on different test sets with different degrees of variability of the face patterns. In this paper, we present a new approach for determining the orientation of face in the selected window and then use this information to rotate the face upright

The equivalence of two-dimensional PCA to line-based PCA

Abstract— In this digital era, face recognition system plays a vital role in almost every sector. Face recognition is one of the mostly used biometrics. It can used for security, authentication, identification, and has got many more advantages. Despite of having low accuracy when compared to iris recognition and fingerprint recognition, it is being widely used due to its contactless and non-invasive process. Furthermore, face recognition system can also be used for attendance marking in schools, colleges, offices, etc. This system aims to build a class attendance system which uses the concept of face recognition as existing manual attendance system is time consuming and cumbersome to maintain. And there may be chances of proxy attendance. Thus, the need for this system increases. This system consists of four phases- database creation, face detection, face recognition, attendance updation. Database is created by the images of the students in class. Face detection and recognition is performed using Haar-Cascade classifier and Local Binary Pattern Histogram algorithm respectively. Faces are detected and recognized from live streaming video of the classroom. Keywords—Face Recognition; Face Detection; Haar-Cascade; Opencv :library are used in face recognition system.

In this paper, an automatic face recognition system is proposed based on appearance-based features that focus on the entire face image rather than local facial features. The first step in face recognition system is face detection. Viola-Jones face detection method that capable of processing images extremely while achieving high detection rates is used. This method has the most impact in the 2000’s and known as the first object detection framework to provide relevant object detection that can run in real time. Feature extraction and dimension reduction method will be applied after face detection. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) method is widely used in pattern recognition. Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) method that used to overcome drawback the PCA has been successfully applied to face recognition. It is achieved by projecting the image onto the Eigenface space by PCA after that implementing pure LDA over it. Square Euclidean Distance (SED) is used. The distance between two images is a major concern in pattern recognition. The distance between the vectors of two images leads to image similarity. The proposed method is tested on three databases (MUCT, Face94, and Grimace). Different number of training and testing images are used to evaluate the system performance and it show that increasing the number of training images will increase the recognition rate.

This study proposes a Fusion, Feature-Level, Face Recognition System (FFLFRS) that is based on the Multi-Resolution, Singular Value Decomposition (MSVD) fusion technique. Face recognition in the FFLFRS is achieved via four processes: face detection, feature extraction, feature fusion, and face classification. In this system, the most significant face features (that is, the eyes, nose, and mouth) are first detected. Then, local and global features are extracted by the Local Binary Pattern (LBP) and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) extraction approaches. Afterwards, the extracted features are fused by the MSVD method and classified by the Artificial Neural Network (ANN). The proposed FFLFRS was verified on 10,000 face images drawn from the face images database of the Olivetti Research Laboratory (ORL). Face recognition performance of this system was contrasted with levels of performance of three state of the art, fusion-level, face recognition systems (FRSs) depending on the Frequency Partition (FP), Laplacian Pyramid (LP), and Covariance Intersection (CI) fusion methods. Ten-thousand images were employed to test the proposed model and assess its performance, which was evaluated in terms of changes in pose, illumination, and expression, besides low resolution and presence of occlusion. The face recognition results of the proposed FFLFRS are encouraging. This system proved to be effective in dealing with images having challenges to face recognition and it could achieve a recognition accuracy as high as 97.78%.

Face recognition of persons has received so much attention in the recent years due to its many applications in different fields such as security applications, video surveillance, biometric systems, identifying the criminals etc. This paper develops a system that can recognize the human face in the input image after it has been detected. The system is trained with set of faces and non faces, and when the input picture is given, the face is detected using Viola Jones Algorithm. In face recognition, the features are extracted from the training dataset using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and then the system is trained to recognize the face using Support Vector Machine (SVM) classification. When the input image is given for face recognition, features are extracted from the input picture using PCA and multiclass classification is done by SVM.

The detection and recognition of human face are a vital step to achieve several objectives, such as intrusion detection, face recognition which require high accuracy. The presence or absence of a beard changes a person's appearance dramatically and has a huge effect or the ability to detect and to recognize him. This paper introduces a novel approach for the detection of bearded face and removal of beard from three dimensional bearded faces. The proposed method preprocess to extract the informative part of face and to divide the face into five segments in order to locate the lower part of the face. This preprocessing led to detect the presence of the beard in this region by calculating and comparing the standard deviation of coordinate Z of each mouth area. In a second process, we precede a Laplace smoothing operation to remove the beard. As results we found that the low pass filter (Taubin smoothing) turned out to be the most and appropriate operation to remove different styles of beards.

From the past two decades, various spheres of activity are in the aspect of ‘Face recognition’ as an essential tool. The complete series of actions of face recognition is composed of 3 stages: Face Detection, Feature Extraction and Recognition. In this paper, we make an effort to put forth a new application of face recognition and detection in education. The proposed system scans the classroom and detects the face of the students in class and matches the scanned face with the templates that is available in the database and updates the attendance of the respective students.

Fairness has become an important agenda in computer vision and artificial intelligence. Recent studies have shown that many computer vision models and datasets exhibit demographic biases and proposed mitigation strategies. These works attempt to address accuracy disparity, spurious correlations, or unbalanced representations in datasets in tasks such as face recognition, verification and expression and attribute classification. These tasks, however, all require face detection as the first preprocessing step, and surprisingly, there has been little effort in identifying or mitigating biases in face detection. Biased face detectors themselves pose a threat against fair and ethical AI systems, and their biases may be further passed on to subsequent downstream tasks such as face recognition in a computer vision pipeline. This paper therefore investigates the problem of biases in face detection, focusing on accuracy disparity of detectors between demographic groups including gender, age group, and skin tone. We collect perceived demographic attributes on a popular face detection benchmark dataset, WIDER FACE, report skewed demographic distributions, and compare detection performance between groups. In order to mitigate the biases, we apply three mitigation methods that have been introduced in the recent literature and also propose two novel methods. Experimental results show that these methods are effective in reducing demographic biases. We also discuss how the effectiveness varies by demographic attributes, detection easiness, and multiple detectors, which will shed light on this new topic of addressing face detection bias.
