Feature Extraction Techniques for Human Emotion Identification from Face Images

A comprehensive account of almost all the feature extraction methods used in current face recognition systems is presented. Specifically we have made distinction in the holistic and local feature extraction and differentiate them qualitatively as opposed to quantitatively. It is argued that a global feature representation should be preferred over a bag-of-feature approach. The problems in current feature extraction techniques and their reliance on a strict alignment is discussed. Finally we have introduced to use face-GLOH signatures that are invariant with respect to scale, translation and rotation and therefore do not require properly aligned images. The resulting dimensionality of the vector is also low as compared to other commonly used local features such as Gabor, LBP etc. and therefore learning based methods can also benefit from it. In a typical multi-view face recognition task, where it is assumed to have several examples of a subject available for training, we have shown in an extensive experimental setting the advantages and weaknesses of commonly used feature descriptions. Our results show that under more realistic assumptions, most of the classifiers failed on conventional features. While using the introduced face-GLOH-signature representation is relatively less affected by large in-class variations. This has been demonstrated by providing a fair performance comparison of several classifiers under more practical conditions such as misalignments, large number of subjects and large pose variations. An important conclusion is to be drawn from the results on FERET is that conventional multi-view face recognition cannot cope well with regards to large pose variations. Even using a large number of training examples in different poses for a subject do not suffice for a satisfactory recognition. In order to solve the problem where only one training example per subject is available, many recent methods propose to use image synthesis to generate a given subject at all other views and then perform a conventional multi-view recognition (Beymer and Poggio, 1995; Gross et al, 2004). Besides the fact that such synthesis techniques cause severe artefacts and thus cannot preserve the identity of an individual, a conventional classification cannot yield good recognition results, as has been shown in an extensive experimental setting. More sophisticated methods are therefore needed in order to address pose invariant face recognition. Large pose differences cause significant appearance variations that in general are larger than the appearance variation due to identity. One possible way of addressing this is to learn these variations across each pose, more specifically by fixing the pose and establishing a correspondence on how a person’s appearance changes under this pose one could reduce the in-class appearance variation significantly. In our very recent work (Sarfraz and Hellwich, 2009), we demonstrate the usefulness of face-GLOH signature in this direction.

In this article, we proposed a novel teleconferencing system that combines a facial muscle model and the techniques of face detection and facial feature extraction to synthesize a sequence of life‐like face animation. The proposed system can animate realistic 3D face images in a low‐bandwidth environment to support virtual videoconferencing. Based on the technique of feature extraction, a face detection algorithm for the virtual conferencing system is proposed in this article. In the proposed face detection algorithm, the YCbCr skin color model is used to detect the possible face area of the image; the feature points of the face is determined by using the symmetry property of the face and the gray level characteristics of the eyes and the mouth. According to the positions of the feature points on a facial image, we can compute the transformation values of the feature points. These values will then be sent via a network from the sender's side to the receiver's side frame by frame. We can synthesize the realistic facial animations on the receiver's side based on these. Experimental results show that the proposed system can achieve a practical animated face‐to‐face virtual conference with good facial expressions and a low‐bandwidth requirement. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. To assess non-verbal reactions to commodities, services, or products, sentiment analysis is the technique of identifying exhibited human emotions utilizing artificial intelligence-based technology. The facial muscles flex and contract differently in response to each facial expression that a person makes, which facilitates the deep learning AI algorithms’ ability to identify an emotion. Facial emotion analysis has numerous applications across various industries and domains, leveraging the understanding of human emotions conveyed through facial expressions, so it is very much required in healthcare, security and survelliance, Forensics, Autism and cultural studies etc,.. In this study, facially expressed sentiments in real-time photographs as well as in an existing dataset are classified using object detection techniques based on deep learning. Fast Region-based Convolution Neural Network (R-CNN) is an object detection system that uses suggested areas to categorize facial expressions of emotion in real-time. Using a high-quality video collection made up of 24 actors who were photographed facially expressing eight distinct emotions (Happy, Sad, Disgust, Anger, Surprise, Fear, Contempt and Neutral). The Fast R-CNN and Mouth region-based feature extraction and Maximally Stable Extremal Regions (MSER) method used for classification and feature extraction respectively. In order to assess the deep network’s performance, the proposed work builds a confusion matrix. The network generalizes to new images rather well, as seen by the average recognition rate of 97.6% for eight emotions. The suggested deep network approach may deliver superior recognition performance when compared to CNN and SVM methods, and it can be applied to a variety of applications including online classrooms, video game testing, healthcare sectors, and automated industry.

As digital communication increasingly integrates multiple modalities, understanding human emotions through these various channels has become essential for enhancing user experience, improving mental health diagnostics, and advancing affective computing technologies. This paper presents a comprehensive overview of the methodologies and frameworks developed for detecting emotions from video, audio, and text inputs, highlighting the synergies and challenges of multimodal emotion recognition systems. The paper begins by discussing the significance of each modality in emotion detection. Video analysis leverages facial expressions, body language, and gestures, employing computer vision techniques to extract key features that indicate emotional states. Audio processing focuses on vocal characteristics, such as tone, pitch, and speech patterns, utilizing signal processing and machine learning algorithms to interpret the emotional nuances conveyed through speech. Text analysis, on the other hand, relies on natural language processing (NLP) techniques to assess sentiment and emotional context from written language, considering both syntactic and semantic factors. By integrating these three modalities, the proposed systems can achieve more accurate and robust emotion recognition, reflecting the complexity of human emotional expression. Moreover, the paper explores the challenges faced in multimodal emotion detection, including data synchronization, feature extraction, and the need for large, annotated datasets that represent diverse emotional expressions across different cultures and contexts. The integration of machine learning and deep learning approaches is examined, showcasing how these technologies enhance the effectiveness of emotion detection systems. Recent advancements, such as the use of transformer architectures and attention mechanisms, have shown promise in capturing the relationships between modalities and improving the overall classification accuracy. The field of image forensics is expanding rapidly. Many passive image tamper detection techniques have been presented. Some of these techniques use feature extraction methods for tamper detection and localization. This work is based on extracting Maximally Stable Extremal Regions (MSER) features for cloning detection, followed by k-means clustering for cloning localization. Then for comparison purposes, we implement the same approach using Speeded Up Robust Features (SURF) and Scale-Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT). Experimental results show that we can detect and localize cloning in tampered images with an accuracy reaching 97 % using MSER features. The usability and efficacy of our approach is verified by comparing with recent state-of-the-art approaches.

In this talk, several feature extraction techniques will be introduced from two cues: algebraic feature extraction andgeometrical feature extraction methods. For algebraic feature extraction, Principal Component Analysis (PCA), LinearDiscriminant Analysis (LDA), Kernel Discriminant Analysis (KDA), Sparse representation and their variants will beintroduced. For geometrical feature extraction, Contour Points Distribution Histogram (CPDH), Active Shape Model (ASM),Active Appearance Model (AAM), ASM+AAM, and their variants will be presented. Typical applications of these featureextraction methods will be presented including face recognition, image fusion, image retrieval, and target tracking, etc. Themain aim of this talk is to introduce my main work in pattern recognition and computer vision, which hopefully ignitesdiscussions, and future development of feature extraction.

Feature extraction techniques are applied to obtain features that will be useful in classifying and recognizing images. Feature extraction techniques are very helpful in various image processing applications. Many studies show the effectiveness of feature extraction before classification. There is also research showing that a feature extraction method may be good for certain classification approaches but may also be preferable. The impact of the sample and its size can also determine the results of the application of feature extraction techniques in the classification process. In this study, the author aims to prove the effectiveness of the application of the HOG feature extraction technique on the classification with the SVM method on flower images. The experiment was carried out on two groups of images, where the first group was image classes with relatively uniform colors and shapes, both in shape and color. and the second group is image classes with relatively different colors and shapes in the same class. The results showed that image datasets with relatively uniform colors and shapes do not require the application of any feature extraction to produce high accuracy. For classification by performing feature extraction in this study it gives different results for the two interest groups.

In this paper the classification of hyperspectral images is investigated by using a supervised approach. The spectral feature are extracted with well known decision boundary feature extraction (DBFE) and non-parametric weighted feature extraction (NWFE) techniques. The most informative features are fed to random forest (RF) classifier to perform pixel-wise classification. The experiments are carried out on two benchmark hyperspectral images. The results show that RF classifier generates good classification accuracies for hyperspectral image with smaller execution time. Among feature extraction techniques, DBFE has produced better results than NWFE.

A modified genetic algorithm and weighted principal component analysis based feature selection and extraction strategy in agriculture

This paper presents a novel geometrical scale and rotation independent feature extraction (FE) technique for multi-lingual character recognition (CR). The performance of any CR techniques mainly depends on the robustness of the proposed FE methods. Currently, there are very few scale and rotation independent FE techniques present in the literature which successfully extract the robust features from characters with noise such as distortion and breaks in the characters. Many FE methods from the literature failed to distinguish the characters which look similar in their appearance. So, in this paper, we have proposed a novel scale and rotation independent geometrical shape FE technique which successfully recognized distorted, broken, and similarly looking characters. Aside from the proposed FE technique, we've used crossing count (CC) features. Finally, we have combined the proposed features with CC features to make as Feature Vector (FV) of the character to be recognized. The proposed CR technique is evaluated using publicly available media-lab license plate (LP), ISI_Bengali, and Chars74K benchmark data sets and achieved encouraging results. To further assess the performance of the proposed FE method, we've used a proprietary data set containing nearly 168000 multi-lingual characters from English, Devanagari, and Marathi scripts and achieved encouraging results. We have observed better classification rates for the proposed FE method using publicly available benchmark data sets as compared to few of the CR FE methods from the literature.

A novel facial emotion recognition method for stress inference of facial nerve paralysis patients

The extraction of speaker-related features through speaker representations or utterance embeddings has been extensively studied for years. Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) are the most commonly used backbone network for feature extraction, and deep Residual Networks (ResNets), which incorporate residual connectivity into CNNs, achieve effective frame-level feature extraction inside the same input samples. ResNets have demonstrated impressive performance as speaker embedding extractors. With emerging this backbone and its advanced extensions, such as Res2Net, as dominant backbone networks in speaker recognition, and despite its widespread adoption, a significant gap in current speaker embeddings is the unmodified use of these successful backbones from the visual domain, without considering the specific adaptation requirements for the speech field. Tailoring the backbone to account for the unique characteristics of speech representations ensures effective learning in Automatic Speaker Verification (ASV) systems. This thesis concentrates on the backbone network, the fundamental and most critical component of Deep Neural Networks (DNNs), responsible for extracting features from input data and mapping them into distinct feature representations. One of the key questions addressed in the thesis is the following: Which backbone is most robust and yields the most generalized speaker representation, with the potential to be applied to many existing ASV systems?. Through a strategic evaluation, the study analyzed the performance of integrating different residual-based backbones into the most popular ResNet-based fundamental baselines, ResNet-34 and ECAPA-TDNN based models, with highly different model complexity and CNN stem representations. To this end, the proposed architectures were evaluated on the publicly available VoxCeleb dataset. This thesis introduces an innovative approach to speaker modeling by incorporating scale and cardinality dimensions for the first time. Experimental findings reveal that utilizing multi-scale and multi-branch aggregated residual transformations within the Res2NeXt backbone yields considerable performance improvements. Notably, 6s8g and 8s8g variants of Res2NeXt, prove particularly beneficial in improving the representational capability of learned features for speaker embedding. The consistent superiority, excellent compatibility, and robustness of Res2NeXt compared to the current popular ResNet and Res2Net backbones across various architectures and conditions demonstrate its broad applicability and effectiveness as a backbone in speaker modeling. To further evaluate the Robustness and Generalization (R&G) capabilities of the proposed speaker embeddings, the thesis expanded its scope to cross-domain applications, specifically Speech Emotion Recognition (SER), one of the most challenging downstream tasks. A comparative analysis of the proposed speaker embeddings was conducted using two benchmark datasets, IEMOCAP and CREMA-D. The overarching goal of the thesis is to contribute to the development of general-purpose and universal speech representations that generalize effectively across multiple speech-related tasks. By examining the alignment and divergence of embeddings for ASV and SER, the study seeks to answer a fundamental question: Can a single representation framework cater to both speaker verification and emotion recognition or are task-specific embeddings inevitable?. The results confirm that speaker embeddings derived from the Res2NeXt backbone are also highly effective for the SER task, maintaining their performance across diverse evaluation protocols and data variations. This demonstrates the generalizability of Res2NeXt embeddings in the cross-domain task. The study attributes their success to the ability of Res2NeXt-based models to capture rich speech features, including tone, pitch, and phonation patterns, during speaker recognition training—features that are also vital for emotion recognition.

We conduct an emotion recognition study to understand and classify the emotional states of human since the social problems caused by impulsive rage explosions such as the revenge driving, noise floor, and violent crimes. Recently, the emotion recognition technology using electroencephalogram (EEG) has become the foremost consideration of researchers compared with others using voice, facial image, bio-signal, and etc. However, the recognition and assumption of an emotion condition based on direct EEG face a challenge due to its characteristics, namely noise, non-stationary, and non-linear. Therefore, a further appropriate algorithm for feature extraction is more desirable to classify the emotion state from EEG data. In this paper, a multiclass-common spatial patterns (Multi-CSP) is proposed to extract the features with respect to each emotional state. Then, support vector machine (SVM) model is set up to classify these features of emotional state for the rage control. The experimental results show that the proposed feature extraction method, Multi-CSP, performs higher classification accuracy than the popular feature extraction methods.
