The meeting is organized in Melbourne but it effectively involves participants online wherever they are. The conference is defiantly entitled ‘Better Together’. In a very creative way making the most of virtual technology, this is precisely what it is designed to make us all experience. The abstracts are presented by many teams worldwide, and many result from multicentric interdisciplinary collaboration. They reflect important trends in clinical research in childhood-onset disability as well as a clear ethical drive. A number of them describe new findings relating to multiple aspects of participation1 in life situations, and about quality of life. Some present novel findings with respect to recognition and control of emotion in various neurodevelopmental disorders. Mental health is also a prominent topic. Several research projects champion equity in inspiring ways with potentially wide application. Important epidemiological findings shed light on specificities within communities, including studies conducted in collaboration with indigenous peoples. Several teams present new takes on orthopaedic issues. Other very promising results rely on technological applications, from wearable sensors and virtual reality to telerehabilitation. These are but a few of topics of a most interesting meeting that combines the excellence and human touch so typical of the AusACPDM, and marks the beginning of an exciting new era for the IAACD.2 The published abstracts will hopefully serve as reference for reflection and discussion, and as testimony to the current evolution of the field. Though they were selected carefully by the scientific committee for the conference, readers must keep in mind that the work they summarize for presentation at the meeting did not go through the review and editorial process that is required for publication of a full research article. Rather, the dynamic discussions to which they will give rise will be part of a constructive exchange of ideas between peers that will likely contribute to enhance the quality and relevance of that work. I hope those discussions can result in submission of full papers in Developmental Medicine & Child Neurology and elsewhere to improve the lives of disabled people. I will be present online (as well as on Twitter: @ProfBernardDan) throughout the meeting, and so will a number of members of the editorial team. We will be happy to discuss any issues relating to the field, the journal, teaching courses, and our book programme – both during the ‘Ask the editor’ session (one of the ‘Ask me anything’ interactive events) that is scheduled on Friday 4 March at 7:00–8:00am Melbourne time, and at any other time we make common. We look forward to working with you, because we are indeed better together. With best wishes, Bernard Dan, Editor in Chief of DMCN REFERENCES 1 C Imms, D Green, editors.
