Rich Internet applications have removed most of the constraints of Web 1.0 while giving users more responsiveness and advanced browsing and interaction experiences. These new horizons, however, raise many challenges for people with disabilities or using limited hardware and software technologies, whose risk to be excluded from the benefits deriving from advanced web applications. To address this problem, WCAG 2.0 guidelines have been released as the newest World Wide Web Consortium recommendation for accessible web content, and WAI-ARIA is a candidate recommendation which provides reference specifications for accessible rich Internet applications. However, both specifications contain a huge amount of information that often discourages most web designers from dealing with accessibility issues. Moreover, guidelines are suitable and usually adopted to judge a design solution a posteriori, but they do not suggest how to face a design problem constructively. This paper proposes a design pattern language for accessibility. The language can be regarded as a universal design resource for helping web designers create accessible rich Internet applications compliant with the most recent standards. Knowledge representation through design patterns reflects the problem-solving approach usually followed by software and web designers, while pattern organization in a structured language aims to guide web designers throughout the design process. The language has been implemented as an accessible rich Internet application itself, thus allowing designers with disabilities to participate in web design. In order to evaluate the design pattern language, a three-step process was carried out including: (1) a heuristic analysis with a group of human---computer interaction experts, (2) a survey study with a group of web designers, and (3) a validation on the field with two designers who have been requested to apply the language in real design cases.

With the development of Rich Internet Applications (RIAs) in recent years, the RIA technology is now widely deployed for user interface. But large amounts of conventional RIAs have close-coupled modules and not very well structure. They will become a great barrier for large scaled applications. In this paper we present an approach to transform conventional RIAs to structured well RIAs which are based on PureMVC framework. PureMVC is a lightweight framework for creating applications based upon the classic Model-View-Controller design meta-pattern. In this migration model, we adopt abstract structure view and abstract logical view to analyze original RIAs, and then make a smooth transform at a low cost. In addition, we introduce this migration model into a practical RIA and evaluate its utility.

The creation of this bachelor's degree was a series of innovations for us: a new model for degree creation. This is a bachelor's degree created by a community college. It is a degree program that does not exist anywhere else in the state, and it was built on collaboration between the college and local industry, and by collaboration between faculty and staff in different departments in the college. Usually, students are trained in front-end (client-side) skills or back-end (server-side) skills. When determining the need for the degree, the companies contacted indicated that they wanted students trained in both front-end and back-end skills or "full-stack" skills. At the college, web design (front-end) is housed in the School of Arts and Sciences, and web development (back-end) in the School of Business and Applied Technologies. The faculty in these disciplines collaborated with each other, industry partners, and various departments across the college to create a new applied bachelor's degree, a Bachelor of Applied Science in Web Design and Development. The applied nature of the degree was critical to student success and to filling workforce development needs. We wanted students to be trained in current technologies so they would be immediately employable upon graduation. The curriculum requires students to create real-world projects and work with the industry partners as they complete the degree program. This paper outlines our collaborative two-year journey in creating the degree, getting it approved and accredited, and making it available to students.

At present, the Web sometimes behaves as a heterogeneous mixture of several technologies with distinct purposes. On the road to the so-called Web 3.0, it is essential to integrate and harmonize techniques and technologies from its main branches. In this context, this paper focuses on two of these: Rich Internet Applications (RIA) and the Semantic Web. Although RIAs are the most distinctive and used types of Web 2.0 applications, owing to their intrinsic characteristics, some type of clients such as, search engines and readers for disabled people cannot explore a relevant subset of them. Semantic Web technologies can be the key for opening RIA contents to any client. Specifically, the paper proposes the concept of Semantic RIA as an extension of traditional RIAs that can reuse and share structured knowledge on the Web. Furthermore, it presents Sm4RIA, an extension of OOH4RIA that supports and speeds up the development of these applications.

The article provides an answer to the frequently asked question about what to teach students so that they can easily enter the area of web development and become sought-after specialists in the modern IT industry upon graduation. We completed a review of publications and scientific discussions on this subject, performed an analysis of the relevant professional standards as well as the transformation dynamics of the requirements set out by employers for web developers. In addition, the paper examines the demand for designing educational programs. We interviewed representatives of professional communities and university graduates to understand the challenges which former students face while seeking employment in the field of web development and design. Six main skill groups of a modern successful specialist have been identified. They include basic web development skills, web programming skills, web design skills, development skills and development management skills, web resource promotion skills, universal skills. For each group, we identified the main skills and tools which are advisable to be studied as part of the educational program. It has been discovered that training should be based on using skill-oriented educational technologies since solving specific practical problems will enable each student to form their own future workspace. We also created a model of a graduate who aspires to work in the field of web development.

The increase of digital bandwidth and computing power of personal computers as well as the rise of the Web 2.0 came along with a new web programming paradigm: Rich Internet Applications. On the other hand, powerful server-side business rules engines appeared over the last years and let enterprises describe their business policies declaratively as business rules. This paper addresses the problem of how to combine the business rules approach with the new programming paradigm of Rich Internet Applications. We present a novel approach that reuses business rules for deriving declarative presentation and visualization logic. In this paper we introduce a rule-driven architecture capable of executing rules directly on the client by implementing the Rete algorithm. We propose to use declarative rules as platform independent language describing the application and presentation logic. By means of AJAX we exemplarily show how to use client-side executable rules for adapting the user interface of Rich Internet Applications. We call our approach ARRIA: Adaptive Reactive Rich Internet Applications. In order to show the usability of our approach we explain our approach based on an example taken from the financing sector.

This paper introduces a RIA (Rich Internet Application) based virtual instrument platform that is used for teaching of Test and Measurement on Web. To let students assemble virtual experiments on Internet, a RIA application is developed by us. It is a virtual instrument software breadboard and can hold virtual instrument components dynamically. To realize a Plug-and-Play function of virtual instrument components, an event driven mechanism is proposed to drive virtual instrument components directly, and to form a test and measurement application automatically. To record student's work, a XML script language is used to save the assembling result and to load it later. Three examples, the virtual signal generator, the sound recorder and virtual piano, and the camera control and image capture, are given in the paper to show the method.

Product information on the mobile internet grows fast in volume and becomes hard in acquisition. Companies tend to deliver product information on their well-tuned mobile websites or websites that is responsive to various mobile devices. Thus, this kind of site is more of a web app than a traditional website, which we call a rich internet application (RIA). With RIAs, information are kept secret from search engine spiders by means of HTML5, Ajax and other scripting techniques in deep web, user interactions are needed to trigger some prescribed events in some certain order to show the whole picture of the information we need. In this paper, we identified the crux of the problem is how to provide the mechanism to parse the scripts and manipulate document object model (DOM) and the policy to trigger user events and run the scrape process. A new mechanism and policy was formulated based on web crawler techniques and studies in Ajax-specified web crawlers. By remodelling web pages redesigning the architecture of web crawler and refining scrape algorithm, we successfully scrape product data from mobile internet RIAs.

Rich Internet Applications (RIAs) are an emerging software platform that blurs the line between web service and native application, and is a powerful tool for handheld device deployment. By democratizing health data management and widening its availability, this software platform has the potential to revolutionize telemedicine, clinical practice, medical education and information distribution, particularly in rural areas, and to make patient-centric medical computing a reality. In this paper, we propose a telemedicine application that leverages the ability of a mobile RIA platform to transcode, organise and present textual and multimedia data, which are sourced from medical database software. We adopted a web-based approach to communicate, in real-time, with an established hospital information system via a custom RIA. The proposed solution allows communication between handheld devices and a hospital information system for media streaming with support for real-time encryption, on any RIA enabled platform. We demonstrate our prototype's ability to securely and rapidly access, without installation requirements, medical data ranging from simple textual records to multi-slice PET-CT images and maximum intensity (MIP) projections.

Rich Internet Applications (RIAs) have always been about the user experience. RIAs, by (Wikipedia) definition, are web applications that have most of the characteristics of desktop applications, typically delivered through web-browser plug-ins or independently via sandboxes or virtual machines. The term RIA has many different definitions within the Internet development community, but all of those definitions boil down to enhancing the end-user experience in different ways.
