From usability tasks to usable user interfaces

An alternative solution for Indosport, considering the increasingly advanced smartphone development and also followed by the rapid growth of its users in Indonesia. The purpose of this study project is to produce a product in the form of a user interface (UI) and user experience (UX) design in helping to realize targeted mobile applications and not forgetting to apply the principles of visual communication design namely unity and variety, hierarchy, contrast, proportion and balance. The UI and UX design methods go through several stages of work in sequence: pre-production process, production process, and post-production. This design results in UI and UX designs that are equipped with user flow, interface designs, illustrations and prototypes. The main page of the Indosport mobile application is News, Activity, Calendar, and Profile which later on these pages there are several features that are different from the previous page. The making of this UI uses several visual languages such as medium close up, full shot, long shot, close up and medium long shot in the image section contained in the article as well as the depiction of field styles used to almost all visual UI elements. Using several principles in design, namely time to learn, speed of performance, rate of errors by users, retention over time, and subjective satisfaction. The resulting design forms will be distributed directly to the Research and Development division and the IT division from Indosport to be made a native.

An optical brain-machine interface (O-BMI) system using calcium imaging has various advantages such as high resolution, a comprehensive view of large neural populations, abilities such as long-term stable recording, and applicability to freely behaving animals in neuroscience research. The present study developed an ergonomic user interface (UI) design, based on a use scenario for an O-BMI system that can be used for the acquisition and processing of calcium imaging in freely behaving rodents. The UI design was developed in three steps: (1) identification of design and function requirements of users, (2) establishment of a use scenario, and (3) development of a UI prototype. The UI design requirements were identified by a literature review, a benchmark of existing systems, and a focus group interview with five neuroscience researchers. Then, the use scenario was developed for tasks of data acquisition, feature extraction, and neural decoding for offline and online processing by considering the sequences of operations and needs of users. Lastly, a digital prototype incorporating an information architecture, graphic user interfaces, and simulated functions was fabricated. A usability test was conducted with five neuroscientists (work experience = 3.4 ± 1.1 years) and five ergonomic experts (work experience = 3.6 ± 2.7 years) to compare the digital prototypes with four existing systems (Miniscope, nVista, Mosaic, and Suite2p). The usability testing results showed that the ergonomic UI design was significantly preferred to the UI designs of the existing systems by reducing the task completion time by 10.1% to 70.2% on average, the scan path length by 14.4% to 88.7%, and perceived workload by 12.2% to 37.9%, increasing satisfaction by 11.3% to 74.3% in data acquisition and signal-extraction tasks. The present study demonstrates the significance of the user-centered design approach in the development of a system for neuroscience research. Further research is needed to validate the usability test results of the UI prototype as a corresponding real system is implemented.

Social Media platforms are increasing user engagements with their attractive User Interfaces (UI) design playing a crucial role in maintaining user involvement. Use of Emotional Intelligence (EI) into the UI transforming user interaction and engagement pattern significantly. With an emphasis on how design decisions affect user behaviour, this study explores the nuanced function of EIUIs (Emotionally Inteligence User Interfaces) in the context of social media. It specifically draws attention to the dangers of manipulative techniques like "dark patterns"-purposeful interface strategies intended to influence users to take actions they might not have otherwise taken-as well as the possibility of constructive involvement. By investigating these practices, the paper hopes to clarify the wider ethical consequences of interface design as well as the duty of platforms and designers to promote transparency, autonomy, and confidence in digital interactions. This paper aims to contribute to the discourse on user interface design by providing a comprehensive understanding of EIUIs' potential and pitfalls in the context of social media interactions. Additionally, this study focusses on finding information of the pattern of Emotionally Intelligent User Interfaces (EIUI) design to enhance user engagements emotionally and tend to take decisions and the impact of the design pattern in user experience.

In this paper the authors present a structured method for automatically generating User Interfaces for e-learning environments. The method starts with a definition of the learning scenario where the different goals, jobs (professor-student/trainer-learner), and tasks are described and stored in a template. After, the description is mapped to FlowiXML, a learning process authoring tool, where graphically trainers or content designers draw the overall process. A learning process is viewed as a workflow and modeled using Petri net notation. From each step in the process model more details are added using user task models; user’s activity interacting with a user interface is stored in such diagrams. Then, a transformational method for developing user interfaces of interactive information systems is used that starts from a task model and a domain model to progressively derive a final user interface. This method consists of three steps: deriving one or many abstract user interfaces from the task model, deriving one or many concrete user interfaces from each abstract interface, and producing the code of the final user interfaces corresponding to each concrete interface. The models and the transformations of these models are all expressed in UsiXML (User Interface eXtensible Markup Language) and maintained in a model repository that can be accessed by the suite of tools. Developing user interfaces in this way facilitates its automated generation over multiple computing platforms while maintaining portability and consistency between the multiple versions. Our approach is illustrated on an open Learning environment using a case study.

Task models are widely used in the field of user interface development. They represent a human actor’s performance or the co-operation of a group of people on or together with a system. For considerable time, it was an open problem in the field how to switch from the analyzing step of task analysis and modeling to the synthesizing step of user interface design. In the meantime, interesting approaches have shown up dealing with this problem and helping to bridge the gap between task modeling and user interface development. In this chapter, some of these approaches are discussed, together with recent concepts used to improve the usability of user interfaces based upon underlying task models.

The motivation for our work is that even though user interface guidelines and style guides contain much useful knowledge, they are hard for user interface designers to use. We want to investigate ways of bringing the human factors knowledge closer to the design process, thus making it more accesible to designers. To this end, we present a knowledge-based tool, containing design knowledge drawn from general guideline documents and toolkit-specific style guides, capable of evaluating a user interface design produced in a UIMS. Our assessment shows that part of what the designers consider relevant design knowledge is related to the user's tasks and thus cannot be applied to the static design representation of the UIMS. The final section of the paper discusses ways of using this task-related knowledge.

Task modeling has become one of the cornerstones of model-based user interface design. In this paper, a task-based approach to user interfaces design is introduced. This approach is supported by a tool, namely IdealXML, that allows for the animation of the specified user interfaces to generate a hi-fi prototype of the future user interface while still in the first development stages

Knowledge-based support for user adapted interaction design

Within groupware systems, collaborative modelling systems play an important role. They are useful and promising tools for many fields of application. One of these fields in which collaborative modelling tools can be useful is the design and systematic development of usable User Interfaces (UI) using task models. In this paper, the use of a generic modelling groupware system, SPACE-DESIGN, is proposed for task modelling using CTT, one of the most used notations in this area. In order to evaluate the utility of the approach, a comparative study with two groups of experienced users and a heuristic evaluation using some well-known frameworks have been made. Results and conclusions of the evaluation are discussed.

Cross-use pattern language: cross-cultural user interface development tool

Mobile user interface (UI) design plays a very important role in determining an application that can be adopted by all types of users, especially those residing in rural areas. This review aims to provide a mapping of previously published studies on mobile UI design application for smallholder agriculture to be a smart farmer. The focus of this scoping review is on the design elements of the proposed UI, strategies of inquiry used and to find out if there is a UI design that involves geospatial context by published articles. The results show that interview and observation are the most common field study methods used to obtain information in designing mobile UI, and the most widely applied UI elements are audio and Interactive Voice Response (IVR). There are many user interface elements that can be used by farmers who have different skills level in dealing with mobile technology. Icon interface is an important element in designing mobile UI for rural farmers based on previous results. Other than that, the use of location function in mobile UI design shows an upward trend where three recent articles used location function to report crop pest and disease and determine the nearest market location. In addition, there is a need to design geospatial elements such as map for mobile UI that match the skills of rural farmers to support the fourth Industrial Revolution in agriculture to be a smart farmer.

Design Patterns (DPs) are acknowledged as powerful conceptual tools to improve design quality and to reduce time and cost of the development process by effect of the reuse of "good" design solutions. In many fields (e.g., software engineering, web engineering, interface design) patterns are widely used by practitioners and are also investigated from a research perspective. Still, they have been seldom explored in the arena of Recommender Systems (RSs). RSs provide suggestions ("recommendations") for items that are likely to be appropriate for the user profile, and are increasingly adopted in content-intensive multimedia applications to complement traditional forms of search in large information spaces. This paper explores RSs through the lens of User Interface (UI) Design Patterns. We have performed a systematic analysis of 54 recommendation-empowered content-intensive multimedia applications, in order to: (i) discover the occurrences of existing domain independent UI patterns; (ii) identify frequently adopted UI solutions that are not modelled by existing patterns, and define a set of new UI patterns, some of which are specific of the interfaces for recommendation features while others can be useful also in a broader context. The results of our inspection have been discussed with and evaluated by a team of experts, leading to a consolidated set of 14 new patterns that are reported in the paper. Reusing pattern-based design solutions instead of building new solutions from scratch enables novice and expert designers to build good UIs for Recommendation-empowered content intensive multimedia applications more effectively, and ultimately can improve the UX experience in this class of systems. From a broader perspective, our work can stimulate future research bridging Recommender Systems, Web Engineering and Interface Design by means of Design Patterns, and highlights new research directions also discussed in the paper.

In 2023, digital literacy has increased to be discussed which navigates human interaction with the current digital environment. The purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between digital literacy and user interface (UI) design quality using a usability testing approach. The study involved collecting data through a series of trials with participants representing different levels of digital literacy. The main focus of this study was to assess the extent to which the UI design could improve the digital literacy understanding of the users, namely school children. The parameters evaluated involved aspects of digital literacy, such as the ability to understand and evaluate digital information, as well as usability elements such as interface clarity, navigation efficiency, and user engagement level. The approach used is the design thinking method which focuses on the end result only. Usability testing is an important evaluation method in measuring the effectiveness, efficiency, and user satisfaction of a user interface (UI). This research focuses on the use of usability testing to assess the quality of UI design in the context of understanding digital literacy. The results of this study can provide insight into how the level of digital literacy can affect the user experience in using digital applications and contribute to the development of UIs that are more user-friendly and accessible to various levels of society.

User interfaces are important for streamlining the interactions between humans and computers. However, there are few effective approaches for collecting users’ preferences implicitly and objectively for the purpose of user interface (UI) design optimization. This paper presents an effective approach to interactive genetic algorithm (IGA) optimization-based UI design via eye tracking, including eye-movement data based users’ preference inferring, gene coding for real UI components and design features, and the visualization and interaction mechanisms. Then we design and build a prototype system that applies IGA to generate and optimize music player UI solutions automatically. An evaluation of our prototype system suggests that it can generate and identify personalized UI designs reliably with minimal user intervention and high efficiency and user satisfaction.

Strategic management of cognitive load enhances user interface (UI) design in a two-fold manner, particularly in information services that require frequent use of sophisticated data. This paper addresses cognitive overload and elevated user experience by decomposing UI elements and information flow. The primary concern is having users cope with vital information within a reasonable timeframe, which is critical to productivity and overall satisfaction. We explore cognitive load theory, specifically its application in UI design regarding intrinsic, extraneous, and germane cognitive load. Through case studies and usability testing, we focus on visual hierarchies, navigation, and overall design consistency that advance feedback and content chunking to show the extreme reduction in mental effort. Also, cognitive load solutions that alter content and interaction based on user activity are advanced as novel adaptive interfaces. The paper frames real-world scenarios to illustrate assessing cognitive load in information service systems to aid UI decision-makers and developers. Emphasis on enabling real-time interface navigation supports optimal information retention and swift decision making. A systems approach focused on users' cognitive capabilities enables a UI design which ultimately makes information services more effective, efficient, and user-friendly.
