Fuzzy autopilot design using a multiobjective evolutionary algorithm

A multi-objective evolutionary algorithm is used to determine the membership function distribution within the outer loop control system of a non-linear missile autopilot using lateral acceleration control. This produces a design that meets objectives related to closed loop performance such as: steady state error, overshoot, settling and rising time. The evolutionary algorithm uses non-dominated sorting for forming a Pareto front of possible solutions. This paper shows that fuzzy controllers can be produced for engineering problems, with the multi-objective algorithm allowing the designer the freedom to choose solutions and investigate the properties of very complex systems.KeywordsFuzzy ControllerSteady State ErrorLateral AccelerationMultiobjective Evolutionary AlgorithmNondominated SortingThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors. In this paper we propose a methodology based on an evolutionary multiobjective optimization algorithm for the problem of up-grading (expansion) the physical topology of transparent optical networks. The aim is to define the new topology layout and the specification of the new optical devices that should be deployed in an existing network in order to improve its performance, considering simultaneously the total installation cost (capital cost) and the total network blocking probability (performance criteria). To accomplish that, we propose a capital cost model for the network. We considered the following physical layer impairments: losses in optical devices, amplified spontaneous emission in optical amplifier and homodyne crosstalk in optical cross connect. The multiobjective optimization evolutionary algorithm used in the optimization process is the NSGA-II. Our proposed methodology can solve the expand physical topology design problem taking into account the physical layer impairments and the capital costs simultaneously. We also present a case study to show the effectiveness of our methodology.

The design of Renewable Energy Power Plants (REPPs) is crucial not only for the investments' performance and attractiveness measures, but also for the maximization of resource (source) usage (e.g. sun, water, and wind) and the minimization of raw materials (e.g. aluminum: Al, cadmium: Cd, iron: Fe, silicon: Si, and tellurium: Te) consumption. Hence, several appropriate and satisfactory Multi-Objective Problems (MOPs) are mandatory during the REPPs' design phases. MOPs related tasks can only be managed by very well organized knowledge acquisition on all REPPs' design equations and models. The proposed MOPs need to be solved with one or more multi-objective algorithm, such as Multi-Objective Evolutionary Algorithms (MOEAs). In this respect, the first aim of this research study is to start gathering knowledge on the REPPs' MOPs. The second aim of this study is to gather detailed information about all MOEAs and available free software tools for their development. The main contribution of this research is the initialization of a proposed multi-objective evolutionary algorithm knowledge acquisition system for renewable energy power plants (MOEAs-KAS-F-REPPs) (research and development loopwise process: develop, train, validate, improve, test, improve, operate, and improve). As a simple representative example of this knowledge acquisition system research with two selective and elective proposed standard objectives (as test objectives) and eight selective and elective proposed standard constraints (as test constraints) are generated and applied as a standardized MOP for a virtual small hydropower plant design and investment. The maximization of energy generation (MWh) and the minimization of initial investment cost (million €) are achieved by the Multi-Objective Genetic Algorithm (MOGA), the Niched Sharing Genetic Algorithm/Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm (NSGA-I), and the NSGA-II algorithms in the Scilab 6.0.0 as only three standardized MOEAs amongst all proposed standardized MOEAs on two desktop computer configurations (Windows 10 Home 1709 64 bits, Intel i5-7200 CPU @ 2.7 GHz, 8.00 GB RAM with internet connection and Windows 10 Pro, Intel(R) Core(TM) i5 CPU 650 @ 3.20 GHz, 6,00 GB RAM with internet connection). The algorithm run-times (computation time) of the current applications vary between 20.64 and 59.98 seconds.

This study compared the performances of three state-of-theart evolutionary multi-objective optimization algorithms: the Non-Dominated Sorted Genetic Algorithm II (NSGA-II), the Epsilon-Dominance Non-Dominated Sorted Genetic Algorithm II (e -NSGA-II) and the Epsilon-Dominance Multi-Objective Evolutionary Algorithm ( e MOEA), on a constrained biobjective crop-mix planning problem (BCP). The BCP test case objectives were to: (i) maximize crop production and (ii) minimize planting area. The BCP problem was enumerated to provide the true Pareto-optimal solution set to facilitate rigorous testing of the evolutionary multi-objective optimization algorithms. The performances of the three algorithms were assessed and compared using three performance metrics (additive epsilon indicator, inverted generational distance and spacing). For the comparative study, a graphical comparison with respect to true Pareto front of optimal crop planning problem was provided. Results of the analyses indicated that the e MOEA greatly outperforms the NSGAII and the e -NSGA-II.

An Enhanced multi-objective evolutionary optimization algorithm based on decomposition (E-MOEA-D) proposed for optimal placement of Distributed Generation (DG) and Electric Vehicle (EV) Fast Charging Station (FCS) in distribution system. The diversity of the evolutionary algorithm improves the convergence and diverse solution in the process of evolutionary optimization. The proposed algorithm is improved using enhanced diversity algorithm, which yield diverse candidate solutions in population. The optimal placement of DGs and FCS are formulated using three objective functions as i) Active power loss ii) Voltage deviation iii) DG cost. The proposed algorithm is simulated on IEEE-33 bus distribution system. The proposed algorithm is compared with other competitive multi-objective evolutionary algorithms such as decomposition based multi-objective evolutionary algorithm (MOEA-D) and Non-dominated sorting multi-objective evolutionary algorithm (NSGA-II).

Efficient design and management of water distribution networks is critical for conservation of water resources and minimization of both energy requirements and maintenance costs. Several computational routines have been proposed for the optimization of operational parameters that govern such networks. In particular, multi-objective evolutionary algorithms have proven to be useful both properly describing a network and optimizing its performance. Despite these computational advances, practical implementation of multi-objective optimization algorithms for water networks is an abstruse subject for researchers and engineers, particularly since efficient coupling between multi-objective algorithms and the hydraulic network model is required. Further, even if the coupling is successfully implemented, selecting the proper set of multi-objective algorithms for a given network, and addressing the quality of the obtained results (i.e., the approximate Pareto frontier) introduces additional complexities that further hinder the practical application of these algorithms. Here, we present an open-source project that couples the EPANET hydraulic network model with the jMetal framework for multi-objective optimization, allowing flexible implementation and comparison of different metaheuristic optimization algorithms through statistical quality assessment. Advantages of this project are discussed by comparing the performance of different multi-objective algorithms (i.e., NSGA-II, SPEA2, SMPSO) on case study water pump networks available in the literature.

The ground station scheduling problem is a complex scheduling problem involving multiple objectives. Evolutionary techniques for multi-objective optimization are becoming popular among different fields, due to their effectiveness in obtaining a set of trade-off solutions. In contrast to some conventional methods, that aggregate the objectives into one weighted-sum objective function, multi-objective evolutionary algorithms manage to find a set of solutions in the Pareto-optimal front. Selecting one algorithm, however, for a specific problem adds additional challenge. In this paper the ground station scheduling problem was solved through six different evolutionary multi-objective algorithms, the NSGA-II, NSGA-III, SPEA2, GDE3, IBEA, and MOEA/D. The goal is to test their efficacy and performance to a number of benchmark static instances of the ground scheduling problem. Benchmark instances are of different sizes, allowing further testing of the behavior of the algorithms to different dimensionality of the problem. The solutions are compared to the recent solutions of a weighted-sum approach solved by the GA. The results show that all multi-objective algorithms manage to find as good solution as the weighted-sum, while giving more additional alternatives. The decomposition-based MOEA/D outperforms the rest of the algorithms for the specific problem in almost all aspects.

Many of the problems that arise in production systems can be handled with multiobjective techniques. One of those problems is that of scheduling operations subject to constraints on the availability of machines and buffer capacity. In this paper we analyze different Evolutionary multiobjective Algorithms (MOEAs) for this kind of problems. We consider an experimental framework in which we schedule production operations for four real world Job-Shop contexts using three algorithms, NSGAII, SPEA2, and IBEA. Using two performance indexes, Hypervolume and R2, we found that SPEA2 and IBEA are the most efficient for the tasks at hand. On the other hand IBEA seems to be a better choice of tool since it yields more solutions in the approximate Pareto frontier.

Using Pareto-based multi-objective Evolution algorithms in decision structure to transfer the hazardous materials to safety storage centre

In this paper, we compare two multi-objective evolutionary algorithms by solving bi-objective linear and nonlinear constrained optimization problems. The problems considered are three instances of a realistic crop planning problem. The multiobjective algorithms compared are a well-known multi-objective evolutionary algorithm NSGAII and our own algorithm MCA. We discuss the solutions obtained and analyse the sensitivity of variables for multi-objective solutions. From our analysis, it can be concluded that there is still room for improvement in the performance of the evolutionary optimization algorithms for some of these optimization problems

Hybrid flow shop scheduling (HFS) is an on sought problem modelling for production manufacturing. Due to its impact on productivity, researchers from different backgrounds have been attracted to solve its optimum solution. The HFS is a complex dilemma and provides ample solutions, thus inviting researchers to propose niche optimization methods for the problem. Recently, researchers have moved on to multi-objective solutions. In real-world situations, HFS is known for multi-objective problems, and consequently, the need for optimum solutions in multi-objective HFS is a necessity. Regarding sustainability topic, energy utilization is mainly considered as one of the objectives, including the common makespan criteria. This paper presents the existing multi-objective approach for solving energy utilization and makespan problems in HFS scheduling using Non-Dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm-III (NSGA-III), and a comparison to other optimization models was subjected for analysis. The model was compared with the most sought algorithm and latest multi-objective algorithms, Strength Pareto Evolutionary Algorithm 2 (SPEA -II), Multi-Objective Algorithm Particle Swarm Optimization (MOPSO), Pareto Envelope-based Selection Algorithm II (PESA-II) and Multi-objective Evolutionary Algorithm based on Decomposition (MOEA/D). The research interest starts with problem modelling, followed by a computational experiment with an existing multi-objective approach conducted using twelve HFS benchmark problems. Then, a case study problem is presented to assess all models. The numerical results showed that the NSGA-III obtained 50% best overall for distribution performance metrics and 42% best in convergence performance metrics for HFS benchmark problems. In addition, the case study results show that NSGA-III obtained the best overall convergence and distribution performance metrics. The results show that NSGA-III can search for the best fitness solution without compromising makespan and total energy utilization. In the future, these multi-objective algorithms’ potential can be further investigated for hybrid flow shop scheduling problems.

Orthogonal simulated annealing for multiobjective optimization

The environmental/economic dispatch (EED) problem, as one of the most important optimization problems in power systems operations, is a highly constrained, nonlinear, multiobjective optimization problem. Multiobjective evolutionary algorithms have become effective tools for solving the EED problem. To obtain higher quality Pareto solutions for EED as well as further improve the uniformity and diversity of the Pareto set, this paper proposes a novel multiobjective evolutionary algorithm, namely multiobjective grey prediction evolution algorithm (MOGPEA). The MOGPEA first develops a novel grey prediction evolution algorithm (GPEA) based on the even grey model (EGM(1,1)). Unlike other evolutionary algorithms, the GPEA considers the population series of evolutionary algorithms as a time series and uses the EGM(1,1) model to construct an exponential function as a reproduction operator for obtaining offspring. In addition, the MOGPEA adopts two learning strategies to improve the uniformity and diversity of the Pareto optimal solutions of the EED. One is a leader-updating strategy based on the maximum distance of each solution in an external archive, and the other is a leader-guiding strategy based on one solution of each external archive. To validate the effectiveness of the MOGPEA, a standard IEEE 30-bus 6-generator test system (with/without considering losses) is studied with fuel cost and emission as two conflicting objectives to be simultaneously optimized. The experimental results are compared with those obtained using a number of algorithms reported in the literature. The results reveal that the MOGPEA generates superior Pareto optimal solutions of the multiobjective EED problem. Multi-objective optimization problems can be divided into continuous multi-objective optimization problems and discrete multi-objective optimization problems, and discrete multi-objective optimization is not universal. In practical applications, there are many discrete multi-objective optimization problems. The solution of different problems needs to design different evolutionary multi-objective algorithms according to their specific conditions. The threshold in the traditional multi-objective optimization of wireless network is a preset constant. It has relatively poor performance in the synthesis of images with different noise levels. An adaptive wireless network multi-objective optimization algorithm based on image synthesis is proposed. Based on the maximum inter class variance and maximum peak signal to noise ratio (SNR), an adaptive wireless network multi-objective optimization algorithm is established. The accuracy and noise immunity of image synthesis are also considered. In order to avoid the effect of threshold increase on algorithm efficiency, multi-objective optimization algorithm is introduced into the algorithm. Experiments show that the method proposed in this paper is accurate and robust and has good universality for the synthesis of different noise images.

Feature selection aims to select a small subset of relevant features while maintaining or even improving the classification performance over using all features. Feature selection can be considered as a multi-objective problem, i.e., minimizing the number of selected features and maximizing the classification accuracy (minimizing the classification error) simultaneously. Most evolutionary multi-objective algorithms encounter difficulties when handling a feature selection task due to the discrete search space, although they perform well on continuous/numeric optimization problems. This paper proposes a grid-dominance based multi-objective evolutionary algorithm to address feature selection. The aim is to explore the potential of the grid-dominance method to strengthen the selection pressure toward the optimal direction while maintaining an extensive distribution among the objective values of feature subsets. To increase the population diversity, a subset filtration mechanism is proposed. The performance of the proposed two algorithms is tested on fourteen datasets of varying difficulty. With the proposed methods, the performance metrics, hypervolume and inverted generational distance have been significantly improved compared with other commonly used multi-objective algorithms, and the population diversity has also been increased.
