Gateways Placement Optimization in Wireless Mesh Networks

The wireless mesh network is emerging as a promising technology in providing economical and scalable broadband Internet accesses to communities. The backbone of the wireless mesh network consists of mesh routers, which connect each other in an ad hoc manner via wireless links. The presence of backbone mesh routers and utilization of multiple channels and interfaces allow the wireless mesh network to have better capacity than that of the infrastructure-free ad hoc network formed by mesh clients directly. A special type of the mesh routers, referred to as gateway nodes, is capable of Internet connection, and other mesh routers and associated terminal clients have to access the Internet through the gateway nodes. In this paper, we present the analytically traceable stochastic models to characterize the average delay and throughput performance in wireless mesh networks. We model the forwarding mesh routers as an open queuing network. The analytical model takes into account the mesh router density, the random packet arrival process, the degree of locality of traffic and the collision avoidance mechanism of the IEEE802.11 DCF random access MAC. Our simulation results suggest that the analytical results are quite accurate, which can provide valuable insights in system performance and an effective guideline for the scalable design and optimization in wireless mesh networks.

Wireless mesh networks (WMNs) have recently evoked much research attention as a novel technology for last-mile broadband Internet access. When designing a WMN, gateway placement is significant for it determines the total network throughput. To address this problem, a novel gateway placement approach is proposed in this paper, in which three objectives are optimized, i.e. the number of gateways, the average MR (mesh router)-GW (gateway) hop count and the variance of gateway load. The gateway placement problem is modeled as a multiple objective linear program first, and then a two-stage load balanced gateway placement algorithm is proposed. The first stage is weight-based greedy gateway selection, and the second stage is load balanced MR attachment. Simulation results show that the algorithm behaves similarly compared with existing approaches in both number of gateways and average MR-GW hop count, while achieving better load balance.

Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs) have recently emerged as a technology for next-generation wireless networking. WMNs partially replace wired backbone networks, and it is therefore reasonable to plan carefully radio resource assignment to provide quality guarantees to traffic flows. Directional transmissions allow to reduce radio interference, thus exploiting spatial reuse. Therefore, as a main contribution, in this paper we study the joint routing and scheduling optimization problem in Wireless Mesh Networks where nodes are equipped with directional antennas. To this aim, we assume a Spatial reuse Time Division Multiple Access (STDMA) scheme, a dynamic power control able to vary the emitted power slot-by-slot, and a rate adaptation mechanism that sets transmission rates according to the Signal- to-Interference-and-Noise Ratio (SINR). We provide column generation-based heuristic approaches for the proposed models in a set of realistic-size instances and discuss the impact of different parameters on the network performance. The results show that our schemes increase considerably the total traffic accepted by the network, providing bounds to the achievable performance.

Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs) have recently gained wide attention as a way to provide Internet connectivity in hard-to-reach areas as well as in big cities. The main problem of such networks is their limited bandwidth availability compared to wired networks. Hence, efficient usage of available communication resources is of crucial importance for WMNs. Peer-to-peer applications, these days, produce a considerable amount of traffic over the Internet. Such applications build their own overlay network by not taking into account the topology and the status of the underlying infrastructure, so causing an inefficient utilization of physical communication resources. This problem is particularly severe for Wireless Mesh Networks. In this paper we propose a cross-layer solution for P2P Bittorrent traffic optimization in WMNs, based on the ALTO (Application Layer Traffic Optimization) Service recently defined by the IETF. Our solution is able to significantly optimize Bittorrent traffic and it does not require any modification to the Bittorrent application. The tests we performed show a reduction of about 27% of download time and a reduction of about 66% of traffic crossing the WMN borders.

Developing effective, fairness-preserving optimization algorithms is of considerable importance in systems which serve many users. In this paper we show the results of the threshold accepting procedure applied to extremely difficult problem of fair resource allocation in wireless mesh networks (WMN). The fairness is modeled by allowing preferences with regard to distribution of Internet traffic between network participants. As aggregation operator we utilize weighted ordered weighted averaging (WOWA). In the underlaying optimization problem, the physical medium properties cause strong interference among simultaneously operating node devices, leading to nonlinearities in the mixed-integer pricing subproblem. That is where the threshold accepting procedure is applied. We show that, the threshold accepting heuristic performs much better than the widely utilized simulated annealing algorithm.

In a wireless mesh network (WMN), the traffic is aggregated and forwarded towards the gateways. Strategically placing and connecting the gateways to the wired backbone is critical to the management and efficient operation of a WMN. In this paper, we address the problem of gateways placement, consisting in placing a minimum number of gateways such that quality-of-service (QoS) requirements are satisfied. We propose a polynomial time near-optimal algorithm which recursively computes minimum weighted Dominating Sets (DS), while consistently preserving QoS requirements across iterations. We evaluate the performance of our algorithm using both analysis and simulation, and show that it outperforms other alternative schemes by comparing the number of gateways placed in different scenarios

In this letter, we for the first time introduce segment routing (SR) to wireless mesh networks (WMNs) under the primary interference model, and try to obtain the upper bound of maximum network throughput from an online routing perspective. We first propose an SR-enabled WMN (SR-WMN) architecture. We then develop an online primal-dual algorithm with guaranteed worst case performance bound. We finally show via simulation that the proposed solution tends to be close to the optimum by configuring just over half of the wireless mesh routers (WMRs) to support SR.

In a wireless mesh network (WMN), mesh clients (MCs) access the Internet through the wireless backbone formed by the Internet Gateways (IGWs) and Mesh Routers (MRs). An IGW as the traffic center may easily become the congestion center in a WMN. The load balancing between IGWs will reduce the traffic congestion thereby improving the network performance and providing a better quality of service (QoS). In this paper, potential load balancing between different IGW service domains is examined and fairness metrics are defined for both homogenous and heterogeneous WMNs. A distributed load balancing scheme based on diffusion methods is proposed to achieve a global load fairness. The effectiveness and efficiency of proposed load balancing scheme are verified by extensive simulations.

In a wireless mesh network (WMN), mesh clients (MCs) access the Internet through the wireless backbone formed by the Mesh Routers (MRs) and Internet Gateways (IGWs). Internet Gateways are the traffic center in each IGW service domain thus may also become the congestion center. To improve the performance of a WMN, the load balancing between different IGW service domains is investigated. The load fairness between IGWs domains will improve the network performance and provides a better quality of service (QoS) for end users. In this paper, the fairness index is defined for both homogenous and heterogeneous WMNs. A probabilistic load balancing algorithm based on the simulated annealing method is proposed to get the global load fairness.

Multiple-radio multiple-channel wireless mesh networks (MRMC WMNs) are fitting as the wireless backbone networks for ubiquitous Internet access. It is quite a challenge to satisfy the multiple traffic requests from multiple source-destination pairs with different data transmission requirements. The multiple pair traffic flows may cause heavy conflict via the nature of wireless media. To take almost full use of the limited resources, we design a routing algorithm based on ant colony optimization. The pheromone leads the finding of primary paths. Wireless Mesh Network (WMN) is recently emerged network having robustness. It supports clients to communicate with different types of networks, Internet etc which provides a better service to next generation. It consists of mesh routers and mesh clients. These mesh routers are minimal mobile and mesh clients are totally mobile. The protocols of Ad hoc network are used in WMN. These protocols assume that every node is mobile. But as the mesh routers are minimal mobile or not mobile, the protocols brings overhead for the mesh routers. Our task is to relieve mesh routers using ad hoc network protocol from the overhead and define a better protocol which will fit in WMN efficiently. To do so, we've found that the existing architecture of WMN is needed to be changed slightly. We have proposed a new architecture for Wireless Mesh Network. In our proposal WMN is relieved from overhead being caused by using ad hoc network protocol. Our architecture use unicasting technique in lieu of broadcasting technique for route discovery as well as route maintenance. We will first describe the overview of WMN, its existing architecture. Later we will go to our proposed architecture.

Mesh router (MR) placement is one of the fundamental issues that need to be carefully addressed to provide mesh clients with satisfactory performance in a wireless mesh network (WMN). This paper proposes a virtual force based MR placement algorithm (VFPlace) which is scalable and self- adaptive. Given a certain number of MRs, VFPlace targets to determine the positions of these MRs to maximize their overall coverage and maintain a certain number of neighbors for each MR, while satisfying geographic and traffic constraints of a specific WMN. VFPlace can dynamically avoid placing MRs in prohibitive regions, favor preferential regions and balance the distance between MRs. Moreover, VFPlace can adapt the MR placement to the highly aggregated traffic load towards Internet gateways. The effectiveness of VFPlace is demonstrated through extensive simulations.

A wireless mesh network is a mesh network implemented over a wireless network system such as wireless LANs. Wireless Mesh Networks(WMNs) are promising for numerous applications such as broadband home networking, enterprise networking, transportation systems, health and medical systems, security surveillance systems, etc. Therefore, it has received considerable attention from both industrial and academic researchers. This dissertation explores schemes for resource management and optimization in WMNs by means of network routing and network coding. In this dissertation, we propose three optimization schemes. (1) First, a triple-tier optimization scheme is proposed for load balancing objective. The first tier mechanism achieves long-term routing optimization, and the second tier mechanism, using the optimization results obtained from the first tier mechanism, performs the short-term adaptation to deal with the impact of dynamic channel conditions. A greedy sub-channel allocation algorithm is developed as the third tier optimization scheme to further reduce the congestion level in the network. We conduct thorough theoretical analysis to show the correctness of our design and give the properties of our scheme. (2) Then, a Relay-Aided Network Coding scheme called RANC is proposed to improve the performance gain of network coding by exploiting the physical layer multi-rate capability in WMNs. We conduct rigorous analysis to find the design principles and study the tradeoff in the performance gain of RANC. Based on the analytical results, we provide a practical solution by decomposing the original design problem into two sub-problems, flow partition problem and scheduling problem. (3) Lastly, a joint optimization scheme of the routing in the network layer and network coding-aware scheduling in the MAC layer is introduced. We formulate the network optimization problem and exploit the structure of the problem via dual decomposition. We find that the original problem is composed of two problems, routing problem in the network layer and scheduling problem in the MAC layer. These two sub-problems are coupled through the link capacities. We solve the routing problem by two different adaptive routing algorithms. We then provide a distributed coding-aware scheduling algorithm. According to corresponding experiment results, the proposed schemes can significantly improve network performance.

In multi-channel wireless mesh networks (WMNs), it is significantly important to achieve efficient channel utilization. The channel assignment problem, which investigates how to seek a proper mapping between available channels and network interface cards (NICs) on mesh routers (MRs), is attracting more and more attention from the research community. However, most proposed channel assignment approaches assume that NICs are evenly placed on the MRs, and its amount is also pre-determined. Due to the non-uniform distribution of WMN traffic, the equal interface placement will inevitably cause that the bottleneck MRs suffer from NIC shortage, and MRs with less load only have a low utilization of NICs. Hence, in order to improve network performance and reduce network cost, interface placement should be considered carefully in the process of planning a WMN. In this paper, we investigate the joint interface placement and channel assignment problem, i.e., how to appropriately place NICs on MRs and assign channels to them. We first formulate the problem as a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model, which aims to minimize the total number of NICs while satisfying logical link, link bandwidth, link interference and traffic demand constraints. Then, we propose an MILP-based heuristic algorithm, using iterated local search to obtain sub-optimal solutions efficiently. Finally, we conduct simulation experiments to compare the heuristic solutions with the optimal solutions, and the results show that our proposed heuristic algorithm can achieve good sub-optimal solutions. Moreover, the simulation results also demonstrate that the algorithm can be well applied in large-scale WMNs where the optimal solutions cannot be obtained, and can perform well under different traffic demands.

The placement of mesh routers (MRs) in building a wireless mesh network (WMN) is the first step to ensure the desired network performance. Given a network domain, the fundamental issue in placing MRs is to find the minimal configuration of MRs so as to satisfy the network coverage, connectivity, and Internet traffic demand. In this paper, the problem is addressed under a constraint network model in which the traffic demand is non-uniformly distributed and the candidate positions for MRs are pre-decided. After formulating the MR placement problem, we first provide the theoretical analysis to validate the traffic demand and determine the optimal position of Internet gateway (IGW). To reduce complexity of determining the locations of MRs while satisfying the traffic constraint, we propose an effective heuristic algorithm to obtain an close-to-optimal solution. Finally, our simulation results verify our analytical model and show the effectiveness of our proposed algorithm.
